It's actually so uplifting to see that there was a point in US history that people were proud to be seen as communists. Man, even in the center of the empire we find selfless comrades who dared to struggle for a better world. It's for all of them that we continue to struggle

Just last night I was talking with a friend (over hotpot lol) how there's this lie in the modern narrative that our protests are more "violent" or "needless" today and how protesters of the past somehow had more "decorum" that we should emulate. But it's just to placate us today and it's not true at all. We just don't teach or highlight the struggle, strength, pride or ass kicking prowess our comrades of the past had 💪🏻

One of the things I like that you bring up is *why* these movements would be appealing and shouldn’t be considered ahistorical or weird to have existed. (And then of course why those thoughts get punished so heavily as an aberration from the system.) (As I just finished editing a video on how East Germany missed the lessons its own people were telling them lol)

    • @LadyIzdihar
      @LadyIzdihar  Місяць тому +15

Yeah, my country also hasn't had viable communist candidates since the Red Scare but I would totally wear that pin during campaign season then vote for the least awful party. It made sense at the time, y'know, and it's a nice reminder that supporting communist parties both in electoral politics and in other forms of political action was a viable option once and perhaps one day could be again.
And yeah, saying "vote communist" is slightly more socially accepted than saying "electoralism is pointless and our democracy is failing". And I totally understand social acceptability of the socialist symbols you wear, I have this modern reproduction thingy, it's a pin that's my country's flag crossed with a Soviet flag. There was a historical event during the Cold War that might have inspired it (we beat them once in an exhibition sports match), but I interpret it as "I'm a *commie* but I'm not a *traitor*" and a symbol similar to old American communism and the less fascist side of patriotic socialism, i.e. I'm a communist because I want to fix my country's problems and I think that would genuinely fix some of them. And even that, I don't wear very much anymore since the war in Ukraine broke out, for the same reason I don't wear my ushanka and my big fuzzy winter coat anymore. See, people here have a nasty tendency to conflate the USSR and modern Russia, and to assume that Soviet symbols are signaling support for Russia rather than anti war and support for international socialism, so I have to be really careful anytime Russia goes to war and the West notices.

So very grateful for your amazing content. Your point about the physical items being a connection to the people of the past really resonated with me. It's been a tic of mine for years that if I'm studying a particular topic or period in history, I need some kind of physical touchstone to help me connect to the material. So, when I'm reading from my very tiny but growing collection of Soviet history books (thanks to you), Pasha the Soviet-era rubber toy cat is sitting nearby. And I love choosing pins from my small Soviet travel-themed collection. Assalamu alaikum from Texas. 😁

Greetings from the Canary islands, i have some badges from Soviet Union and China. My favourite badge from soviet union is one badge about Perestroika, i have this badge in my colection, it has the face of Gorbachov with tie, it has the soviet flag and it has the words "perestroika democracy glasnot", these words are written in russian, i got that favourite badge by Ebay, it is original soviet badge and i think it was issued in 1985 1986 1987 or 1988 ( it might be from 1987 1988 better ). And aaahhh i have the book written by Gorbachov "Perestroika a new thinking for our country and for the world ", the book has the Gorbachov as well, it is written in russian ( the first edition of this book ) and it was published in 1988 definitely. I loved the Perestroika, this idea was good for the soviet union, this idea tried to find one democratical socialism; but unfortunately did not work.... anddd ahhhh i have the 2 stamps issued by soviet union about perestroika in 1988 ( one of them it is about "Aurora" cruiser ).

Hello Ma’am, my name is Collin Wood, your channel came up in my feed and I have to say it fascinates me. I will readily admit I am a strict ant socialist anti communist and a practicing Latter Day Saint. But, I feel that it is important for us all to engage respectful dialogue and try to understand one another that we may come to a mutual respect and understanding of each others values and background. Honestly, when I found out that you are a practicing Muslim and a communist (I hope I understood that correctly) that too fascinated me. That said, as I awe have differing political and religious beliefs I would like to ask you what you would like me to understand about your beliefs and values as I am sure that despite our differences as children of Abraham we hold many similar values. I hope you have a great day and that we can we can even discuss such topics as politics and religion as I believe gaining that understanding builds unity throughout humanity. Thank you for taking the time to read my comment.
    Collin

I get a bittersweet feeling from pins and posters urging Americans to vote communist--like...that was a _thing?_ You could walk around with that and have it mean something, maybe even hope in your heart that something might come of it? Instead I grew up amid a devout faithlessness, and now I am surrounded by its malignant logical conclusion.
Our culture is a garish mausoleum built to mourn the death of its own meaning, and it doubles as a pissoir.

Loving all of this stuff on American communists. Would love to hear more about the women and about daily lives. People like you really do a great job to make the topic accessible and make me feel less despair over the Anglosphere's historic lack of successful revolution or preserved socialist media at the same quality and volume as what made it out of the Soviet Union or comes out of China today, both by talking about what does exist of that history and by bringing those overlooked perspectives on Soviet history to a more Western audience.

I haven't read it either, but I know that in his later years, Solzhenitsyn was a relentless critic of the West as well, especially of the US, which is understandable considering that country's privatised, for-profit prison system which has led to it being the country that imprisons more of its citizens than anywhere else in the world. Solzhenitsyn was a dissident, but he would be a dissident wherever he was, and more power to him.

Then i could finally have someone who is interested in listening to my decades long hyperfixation on communist and guerilla operations in Japan from 1945 to the 60s . Such crazy and contrasting history with what most people perceive of Japan at that time period. Perhaps a future video idea for you !
Also dont feel bad about how you are voting, with no viable communist or even demsoc candidates, it really comes down to your single issue you think is most important this year.
Things are so upside down in American politics that I think we legitimately have a few communists voting trump and a few fascists voting for harris.
Sums up America in general, no rules , only chaos and exploitation !
Regardless of who wins though, the real winner in my opinion will be those who wear those beautiful and aesthetic pins to the voting booth !

In the belly of the empire, it doesn't fair well to openly call yourself a communist if surrounded by liberals/conservatives and other right wing nuts.
Instead, it's better to simply educate your fellow workers by pointing out the contradictions of capitalism/imperialism and lies about communist ideals.
We have to plant the seeds for a better future.

Images and icons of a failed past should be left behind, good to look back on them and take inspiration but most of it should be left.
The global left is back in a situation that’s similar to 1880s now economically and is even less united than ever, hanging up symbols of the first attempt should be done so a second new attempt without the old aesthetic can occur.
Socialism will come but not under hammer and sickle or the aesthetics of old.

I want to watch this, and believe in all i might, but the overly theatrical performance element undermines it all. Bear in mind, I'm pretty drunk, but Hollywood has killed all faith in earnestness

It is very nice to be stylish in a retro fashion, but let's not pretend for one second that the Soviet Union in the early '30s was a place that anyone politically active would want to live in...
Google the Soviet Famine of 1930-33. (Between 5.5 million to 8.7 million people died due to starvation.)
After that, you can look up Stalin's purges in the political and military sectors (mostly in 36-38)
After that, you can look up Soviet Gulags.
Then, if you still have happy feelings for Stalin, you can read Koba the Dread by Martin Amis (good luck, I was only able to get thru 1/3 of it before I had to put it down due to sheer disgust at what Stalin was)

if you want a more apolitical take on the holodomor, read some of mark b tauger's work, it might surprise you. he also cuts through lysenkoist bs if you look up 'tauger agrarian studies'. the top search should be a pdf of a study, posted september 2014.
also no one of note within the modern "left" (if there even such a character? the left is in such a disarray it doesn't even matter) "worships" stalin or want to bring back whatever backward things he and his goverment did. that's one of the cornerstones of being a commie, to learn and not repeat mistakes of history. you're scared of change, you hang up on horrific crimes of the past to not see the current horrors of the world, supported by the west. it's understandable to be afraid of change and a "repeat of history" but honestly it's cowardly and dmges the future and potential of humanity... it's ultimately misanthropic.
if we had a worker's world, we wouldn't have todays tyranny of corporations, like boeing for example.
is it ok for whistleblowers to "disappear"? is it ok for exxon to have lied to ppl for 40 yrs and withheld information about climate change? now it's hitting back on the economy and workers in america. like the aftermath of hurricane helene, like the bridge collapse in tennessee. at the end of the day, it's workers paying for all that dmg.
so much about the christian nation being god fearing. you guys don't care about such rhetoric even when it metaphorically hits you in the face.

not that voting is going to have any measurable effect on the european overlords desires but i think trump at least would fight for less harm to happen to americans where as kamala would immediately capitulate to any demands europe shoves in her face. and anyone with the capacity for honesty knows thats where fascism both came from and is still concentrated the most within. so it seems the choices are be fascist but have some semblance of self respect or be fascist and be europes human shields in their wealth conquests and ego trips. cant really get any more honest or truthful than that lol. still find it strange how so many people are almost convinced that europe doesnt even exist today, let alone have absurd amounts of control of the majority of countries outside of europe. even tho these are all easily provable things..

A film called Est-Ouest should be required watching for anyone who thinks uncle Joe wouldn’t promptly put this hijabi in the rylar. You feel "ok" and comfortable in your position of relative privilege that you've been lucky to attain, and choose to sit there taking potshots at those who acknowledge the problem and are busy trying to find the most effective solutions for it
