  • A look at one of the most respected 35mm SLR cameras from the early '80s; a professional level film camera with lots of bells and whistles. The Nikon F3 really shines as a pre-digital workhorse.

It's the perfect wedding camera for the period. Hard to kill, and handles strongly under pressure. The manual shutter release saved my butt a couple of times. Flash sync is slow, I agree. I have only a 50 f/1.4 on mine right now, but hoping to track down an 85 soon.

I've owned 3 F3s in my life and never used the HP viewfinder (pity!) but I can attest to the handling. It's rugged, reassuring and ergonomically awesome. Miles above the DSLRs of today.

I had two F3 bodies for many years at weddings. The 35mm F1.4 Ais, 50mm F1.8 Ais and 85mm F2 Ais were my preferred lenses. I had to replace the PC socket every couple of years. The flash sync was not very fast on the F3 and there is no flash shoe. I liked the size of the F3.

In Victoria you could try Camera Clinic in Collingwood. They seem to have a good reputation, though I haven't used them personally. You could also try Michael's Cameras. I've had them service a couple of F3s a while back and they were quite good.
I can't suggest any repair centres outside Vic, but I'm sure there are many out there.

Yes, there exist quite an array of adapters available to mount Nikkor glass on a Canon EF mount. I have adapters to mount all my Nikkor and Leitz glass on my digital body - Sony NEX-5N. Unfortunately, due to differences in what is known as the "flange focal distance," going the other way and mounting EOS glass on an F mount is near impossible without the use of a teleconverter (lensed) adapter. Not many Nikon users want to do this so that's usually not a problem. ;)

I haven't had much experience with the X7-A. Although it's a Minolta, and an X-series camera, so it has to be good! IIRC, the X7-A was about the same as the X-370 as far as features goes, and that was a great little workhorse. Some X7-As, just like the X-700, had capacitor blow-outs, so if yours still works after all these years, it's a keeper! :D

Cool vid, very thorough, objective, and avoided the usual fanboying the F3 usually gets.
I was considering getting the F3 as an upgrade to my X-700. While the modularity, high ISO, and wide shutter speeds is appealing I don't think it's really worth it. The X-700's lenses are on par with the Nikon manual ones, and I really only need 1/1000/sec, prob even less.
Maybe when the F3 hype dies down or if I can get a deal, or in a few years, I'll get one.

Thanks for a good informative review.
Can you do a similar one for the Nikon F4?

I wish someone could make a good fullframe digital back for the F3.

Why? It would be only very slightly cheaper than completely new camera with better functionality and no issues.

Great cameras, both! The best I can manage is a review of the re-booted early-80s version of the Minolta XG-1(n). Unless I can borrow someone's XD-7 / X-700. Hoping that could be possible. I've owned two XG-1s, so those are easy to find :)

I may post a video about the dials of the F3 in the future, possibly comparing them to the F4

hi.many film's manual camera had be made ! but, pro camera had many problems too. all camera are good to be simple ,film manual ,are best camera .they are long life . keep it .save it.love it.

It's unfortunate that the market value for film cameras is so low. Digital cameras are so much the "in" thing that film cameras are being, in some cases, simply thrown away in favor of DSLRs. I've bought pro-level items like this F3, and even Hasselblads, for only a tiny fraction of their original price, because the interest is in acquiring digital technology. Definitely use the F3! Keep it serviced and working nicely, and in a few years it will become a highly sought-after piece of pro kit.

Hi, I have 3 lenses for an F3 and wondered if there was any way to mount these to a Cannon EOS650D? Thank you :)

best review of the F3, however the only missing thing I think, is how to change batteries.

Thanks! I think you're right, that battery compartment is a nightmare. I will make a video on changing batteries and see if it's worthy of posting :)

It's true that the F100s are cheap, and would make a good camera for learning film. The F3 is a different beast though. Manual focus is something I personally prefer over AF, and the toughness of the body makes the F100 feel like it's made of eggshell. Both will take decent pictures though.

I would not waste time on the F3 now because the used F100 bodies are so inexpensive.

UA-cam doesn't allow links in comments, but if you search eBay for 'Nikon AI Canon EOS adapter' you'll find quite a few, mostly from Hong Kong & China. Very cheap!

  • @GOPhotoVideo

I have a cheap Canon adapter for my Nikon lenses. It works very well considering it was only a few dollars, though there is no auto-aperture feature. You will need to manually set the aperture.

  • @GOPhotoVideo
    @GOPhotoVideo  12 років тому

It is! There are some badly beat-up models around, and not many in such fine condition. KEH often have F3s for sale that look brand new.

Hey man, nice vid, but you seem to have gotten a couple specs wrong.
Flash sync is 1/80, and well, you point out a 2 stop exposure comp, but say it's 3 stops.
Not sure if you care, just figured I'd point that out. I think you also forgot to mention the AE lock.

    • @GOPhotoVideo
      @GOPhotoVideo  11 років тому

Well, kinda wrong :) The exposure compensation comment was definitely wrong. Many thanks for pointing that out. However the flash sync, marked in red on the dial, is in fact 1/60 sec as stated. The flash sync at the 'X' setting is 1/80 sec. As for the AE lock, some things were omitted for brevity, but worth mentioning here that indeed, the F3 has an AE lock. Cheers!

Ah, I guess I'm getting hung up on semantics, you didn't really specify whether you were referring to the dial or the camera in general.
Cause yeah, it marks red 60 on the dial for reference. The F3 is unique in that they added the X on the dial for flash specific use that gives you a 1/80 speed.
For kicks I just tried to see if I could use X as a manual setting, and no, it reads 80 but the meter is unresponsive reading + no matter what F, in any light.

If you can get an F100, keep it. It's one of the best film cameras around. Pro photographers would swear by the F100!

I'm a pro, so true.. the f100 was the best 35 made. F4 was an overbuilt monstrosity, f5 was OK but needlessly big, f3 was outdated. F6 was no better than the 100.
