    Absolutely brilliant 😎. There were so many brilliant bands around back then we would see bands such as the action , soul agents, st. Louie blues, jimmy james and the vagabonds etc etc etc . They did the rounds of the clubs / alnighters . We were spoiled for great bands what wonderful days.😎. Ps we didn't have to pay an arm and a leg to see them😎

    Another terrific 60s group who fell by the wayside, chart-wise. When you look at some of the awful acts having hit after hit (Cilla Black, I am looking at you) and then peruse those groups who barely had a sniff (The Action, The Smoke, Turquoise, The Attack, Kaleidoscope, the UK version, The Mirage, Blossom Toes, etc…) then you really have to wonder what on earth was wrong with the record-buying public of the time. Too many quality 60s outfits who are now merely a side note in British musical history of the era.

    I honestly can't believe they didn't have a hit. Scandalous.

      @@YesterdaysPapers I’ve been pondering why a group this good never had any hits , especially as George Martin recorded with them.
      This is only a guess but when I’ve played their songs to people, they know the songs but not by the Action. It’s possible the Record buying public & especially the Mods back then, already had original versions of the songs so why buy them again.

      @@thekitowl After a certain time it seems they stopped the Motown/soul covers for their singles like Never Ever and Shadows and Reflections.
      I think they were like Geno Washington and the Alan Bown Set big on the live circuit.

      Possibility the lack of orig songs and/or the songs they released were,not commercial enough for the gen market,or just plain bad luck

    • @L1V2P9
      @L1V2P9 2 роки тому +1

      @@bryanpalmer9660 I agree that the lack of original songs is the reason. A band that hopes to garner sustainable international success needs decent song writing from within. The American market doesn't take well to hearing its own music coming back, unless it's an older song with some creative variations. It is generally the first version of the song that is most liked and it sets the standard. Too many British bands of the era watched the US charts and recorded unimpressive copies of US hits and then wondered why their fame never crossed the Atlantic.

    Living in the States, the first time that I ever heard of the action was when I took a chance and bought Mighty Baby's first album. Loved it, especially 'Egyptian Tomb,' but covering US singles meant that the Action had no action in the US. The Marvelettes 'I'll Keep Holding on" was a personal favorite, and I had both the original (Chris Kenner) and Wilson Pickett versions of 'Land of 1000Dances.' Maybe if I heard the Action's versions first, I would prefer them, but covering US soul singles doomed them to my ears. When they morphed into Mighty Baby though, I fell in lovewith the sound.

    Kicked off the support slot for The Who, as they were seen as being a just bit too good by the The Who's management. Pretty sure that's right... But if they had continued supporting The Who, then it might have besn a different story for The Action. :0)
