Historical fact: everyone blames the controller when they suck at SF2.

I have to disagree with your review of the X-Arcade Tank Stick. I have used it since 2014 and this has never failed me. I compete at a high level with the X-Arcade tank stick and have had countless hours of fun especially with fighting games. In my opinion, it's the best arcade stick in the market. It really is built like a tank.

I must have got a good Tankstick because mine has been getting beat to hell for about 15 years now and still works like a champ. Sure I have to take out the Sticks once and a while for a good cleaning and re-align the microswitches a bit to get them just right, but that is only needed about every 5 years or so. The buttons have been used enough they feel very much like arcade leaf-switch based ones I regularly get to use at the local Arcade Museum where the guy has over 100 fully restored classic arcade games to play for comparison. Maybe the new X-Arcade Tanksticks suck, but the one I bought (PS2 connections to computer), was, and still is working perfect for me and my MAME twitch game arsenal. (I play Robotron, Defender, StarGate, NBA Jam, Gyrus, and Galaga the most). The ONLY thing I would like to do to mine besides the Tempest spinner mod I put in about 10 years ago, is to have different stick balls more like the ones on Robotron. But I have not been able to figure out how to do that other than sawing the shafts down and gluing a plastic ball onto them which could be disastrous.

I have used many joysticks through out the years. I ended up having a stick with a sanwa JLF and sanwa buttons. Another one with a seimitsu LS 32. These joysticks and buttons are awesome as you mention in the video. I finaly have a custom wooden two player controller with bat top joysticks. The joysticks which I used for the two player controller are the IL (Industriasa Lorenzo) that are made in Spain. These sticks are bat top as I mentioned (American style) but the quality in their parts is still there like the old happ competitons used to be. If you have problems with Happ sticks check the IL they are great and will surely give you the feel of the mortal kombat arcade cabinet play like you rememeber from the 90s.

Great video. Youre better off finding a commercial stick with a base and system compatibility you like and just swapping out the buttons and sticks for arcade parts. The RAP4 is a great choice if you dont want to swap out anything. The stick I use is a RAP4 but I swapped out the stick for a Seimitsu 62 to specialise more for shooters. The buttons are sanwa which are extremely responsive and feel a little more solid than what comes with the stick. The Hayabusa joystick in the RAP4 is great especially for fighting games since its looser. The Seimitsu has less deadzone so better for micro movements in shooters it seems. You can really specialise the controller for what type of games you mainly play on it. I mostly use a pad but when I do use the stick its for shooters, so Ive been customising it around that. The Mayflash F500 is the next controller Im going to pick up as it seems highly moddable and compatible with most platforms. I plan to put that Hayabusa stick from the RAP4 in that base. Then I can experiment easily with the different sticks to see what I like the best overall or for specific games, styles of game. Its worth trying the bat top and ball top, different spring tensions and actuators, gates as well if you really want to tweak the feel. The Seimitsu 62 felt perfect for what I was looking for so I will probably leave it as is. Its a hybrid of the various sticks Seimitsu has put out and mixes parts. Sanwa and the Hayabusa sticks seem to be the prefference for most fighting game players. Seimitsu are the sticks used in many of the japanese shooter cabinets, so they are more designed around that type of game. Very versatile for fighting games too but it depends what you like and if you want to specialise.

Not only can I do dragon punches and fireballs perfectly ALL THE TIME (may be miss 1 out of 20 because of slop), but when you place your entire hand around the stick and the post between your pinky and ring finger, the Xarcade sticks have flawless control. Even to the point where I can even hear when someone has done a fireball or shouryken improperly.
The Xarcade I have had for over 13 years is incredible. 1 single button wore out and I swapped it with a never used button from the back side.
Once the left stick got a little sticky and I actually took it apart and put a tiny bit of white lithium grease on it and its perfect again.
You guys are just wrong (and you can't throw a fb...I saw your sucky hand motion dude).

A total of 75 arcade joysticks and over 1000 sanwa/seimitsu buttons and my conclusion is that the Seimitsu LS-40 is the only stick i will ever use and the Seimitsu PS-14-GN buttons are the only buttons i will ever use. Please don't waste your money on anything else. (like i did) and also use a shaft cover with the LS-40 because it makes it feel firmer.

Allow me to defend western style arcade parts. If you're using a Super joystick, which is what X-arcade bases their stick on, you aren't gonna get quality SF play. You gotta use Competition, or better, IL Eurojoystick, which is designed for fighting games.
Not that I'll defend X-Arcade buttons, but if you get one with busted controls for cheap, putting a IL Eurojoystick and matching buttons (with Cherry switches), you'll get great response. And yeah, drill some 30mm button holes to the right, and plug up the bottom buttons.

But for the time being I've only got the switches replaced in the left side, and it's already a night and day difference. But yeah, it seems like some of the X Arcade buttons are fine, others have some issues. Not necessarily the springs, but whoever took the buttons from the mold definitely didn't do a very good job trimming the excess plastic from a couple of them, causing them to stick. I will probably replace them all with IL buttons when funds pick back up. At the same time, I might end up just taking what I learned by taking this thing apart and building my own. Main reason I bought the damn thing in the first place was to learn how to work on arcade controls to build my own cabinet. And that Tankstick wasn't intended for that, I want to build my own panel for that, and use a slightly different button layout, moving the bottom right button to the right of the third button on the second row. That way I don't always slap it with my palm.

HIGHly recommended (pun intended). I got an X-Arcade Tankstick.... I don't know, maybe 6 years ago or so. I love it. Love it so much, I converted the joysticks from 8-way to 4-way for games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, and bought an X-Arcade dual stick last year and left it stock 8-way. If company comes over, it takes 5 minutes to open the tank stick up, switch back to 8-way, and then play 4 player Gauntlet or Ninja Turtles.

Got an X-Arcade Tankstick on the way, now wondering if I made a mistake. Mostly going to use it for virtual and Zen pinball, Asteroids and Missile Command through my gaming PC. Is there lag with those type of games please? Pretty handy with modding and tinkering thanks to internet and youtube, and already thinking of and looking at ways to upgrade the sticks and buttons should I have to, and seems pretty straight forward. Not a carpenter though by any means, which is why I bought the X-Arcade. If I have the box or case, I can figure things out as I love building my own PC's. UA-cam and the internet taught me how to do that. Side note, the Lian Li O11 Dynamic XL ROG PC case in white is amazing!!

I've owned a few sticks in my time. The Dreamcast, Namco PS1, various Hori RAPs and of course the XArcade solo. I'll note I grew up in the 80s and 90s and went through the Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct thing...so I know about USA machines and how they feel in comparison to Japanese parts. I got the XArcade solo in 2003 and tossed it in 2010. It was a tank for sure and on the PC/MAME, it was second to none. The stick was loaded with in house parts and I did swap them out with all Happ parts...it made a slight difference but not enough to make it the be all and end all. However, when I used it on the XBOX with the adapter that they sold for it, it was bad. There was definitely input lag with the adaptor for sure. Playing metal slug 3 was ok but fighting games made it a big headache. Nothing a little practice didn't fix though. Later on, I quit using it for my consoles, kept it for PC and once Hori came out with thier PS3 line (also PC compatible), I ended up shit canning it . For me, nothing does the job better on SF/KOF fighters then a Sanwa with an octoganal gate....the square gate does great with the Tekkens, DOAs and VFs. I have yet to try Seimitsu and will one day attempt to experiment. American and Japanese parts are quite different and if you've got a preference, stick with it....and be kind to those who prefer the other.

Guys. You don’t buy the X-Arcade because of the controls. You buy it because it’s a stout unit (Tankstick) that won’t move around, is programmable, and is wide enough for two players with girth. The joysticks included are crappy “leaf switch” actuators. You must replace them with square actuators. Everybody knows this. I replaced them with the red Happ competition joysticks on Amazon, and while they are still not as smooth as my HotRod (original pre-acquisition), it gets the job done. I play SF Alpha 2 and UMK3 for 2 hours per day, as well as host tournaments with no issue. The buttons seem fine to me. The location of buttons 7 & 8 are in fact the proper layout according to Mortal Kombat 3 and up, as well as Neo-Geo.

Agreed - I've owned an X-Arcade for a few years and have changed the buttons (although struggled to change the crappy joysticks) - it's a heavy 2-player unit unlike a lot of the lightweight plastic controllers solely designed for single SF2 players. It sounds to me like the guy in the video just isn’t used to American-style arcade parts. They definitely have a different feel than their Japanese counterparts.
X-Arcade DOESN’T use Happ parts. They use their own parts which aren’t very good. It’s highly recommended that if you go the Tankstick route, to also invest in either Happ Competition sticks or IL Eurosticks and some Happ or IL buttons with Cherry switches.
If you’re an American and threw down on some Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat in the 90s, this is more or less what you played on.
I can’t agree more on the placement of buttons 7 & 8. You can also buy button plugs to patch up those holes. You should still be okay since there aren’t any fighters that require more than 6 buttons.

Younger generation? Almost the entire older generation prefer Sanwa/Seimitsuand because those were the sticks on most arcade cabinets that the majority of people WORLDWIDE grew up with and are accustomed to. Not to mention, they just perform better.
Even after decades and decades they are still the brands of choice for most players and professionals. X-Arcade is for home amateurs and can become decent when tweaked and upgraded with other parts which defeats the purpose. Just buy a generic fightstick and switch out the parts yourself. It's cheaper.
In the end, it comes down to personal preference and what people are most accustomed to.

nothing wrong with Xarcade. Works well, and Suzo-Happ is Chinese made garbage nowadays. If you want the Happ controls you remember from the old days, buy the IL Eurostick. Also, the parts in the XArcade aren't Happ. They're crappy knock offs. Replace the switches in the buttons with Cherry D44X, replace the sticks with IL Eurosticks, and you have a 90's arcade control panel.
And as far as the buttons on the X Arcade, I didn't like them at first either. But the layout makes sense. It allows you to have the exact same four button layout as the MVS control panel, also, the bottom left button makes it feel about as close to the MK3 button layout with the Run button as they could get it without moving the second bottom button to its own row between the two rows of three. (MK cabs have an unusual layout.) Then you have the standard 6 button SFII layout. It's like they tried to cover as much ground with one layout as they could, honestly, I'm impressed. The only thing I think they maybe should have done differently there is move the lower right button to the right side, the cluster of two on the bottom left is kind of awkward. But very minor, and I don't have problems with accidental presses or anything, so I can work with it.

I got too LS32 is deamn good joy but the shaft is loosening fast.
The biggest downside to the LS32 is that i have to change the octagon to have 2way or 4 way, better as you would have to switch between 2,4,8 lifting the joy up and twisting then the LS32 would be the best of the best for me, but as they say not have everything :(

Look into the ls-32 or zippy stick with a 4 way gate. They're microswitches instead of leaf switches though so if you want a real old school feel you might want to search for something that uses leaf switches. I don't know offhand of any currently manufactured sticks that use leafs, but I'd be surprised if no one does.

I have an XArcade Tankstick and I didn't much like the Joysticks for the same reasons you mentioned here. I modded it by changing out all the buttons for real HAPP color bottons.. which look better and I'd say the switches are better than the ones manufactured by XAarcade, they click better. I also added a TurboTwist2 spinner and replaced the joysticks with I.L. EuroSticks which look and feel great... but they still seem to stick which pisses me off. I'm considering trying to replace them again with Seimitsu LS-32 or a SANWA JLF but I'm not sure if the shaft will be long enough in the XArcade. Has anyone tried swamping the joysticks in the XAracade with Japanese sticks? Another option would be to use Zippy sticks but I'm not sure the quality is any better than what I have now.

    • @LostClassics

Your biggest challenge with fitting the japanese sticks will be to mount and secure them to the panel. This site might help with that. www.slagcoin.com/joystick/mounting_layering.html We didn't talk about the Zippy sticks in this video but I have used them and I like them a lot. They're direct copies of the ls 32 and just as good imo.

I’ve never used an X-Arcade but literally you guys were trashing it simply because it seemed like you didn’t want to attempt to learn it?
This proves my point with the sanwa buttons comment of them being “too sensitive”
I’ve never heard anyone complain (when it comes to needing to be very reactive AKA anything in fighting games) being TOO sensitive. Resting your fingers on the buttons is an awful habit to begin with. Lol.

I found this vid a bit too late. I agree, the X-Arcade is a piece of $h!t. Worst money ever spent. Never mind not working decently in Street Fighter. Sometimes it won't even work well in NBA Jam; basic moves like down won't even register. Their advice is to fiddle with the micro switches yourself until they work better. They never improve.
That's the most expensive wooden box I've bought. Don't buy it, just don't. I wish someone told me that before I got it.

Nonnof Yobiznes - If you email X-Gaming they will tell you to swap out their joysticks with these, which is what I did with great results.
      www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0090838JS
Now why they don’t include these as an upgrade option is anybody’s guess.

@@StreetFighter2010 Joysticks are pretty simple devices, maybe a loose wire or bad switch happens but a cherry micro switch replacement can be had for under $2 which is $8 for a whole joystick if you don't like the switches on there so really not much for people to complain about unless you just don't know anything about arcade controls. You can go buy an entire sanwa joystick with switches for $8 and replace the whole thing to whatever you like!
I just have a problem with people calling a product shit if you can mod it to your liking for next to nothing!

@@mynameisprivate158 you have a problem with people calling a product shit if you can mod it for next to nothing?
So what would you call it, if not shit? What's the proper term for an overpriced $200 product that *does not* even work when you buy it. So you have to buy more stuff to make it work and manually fix it yourself after waiting for shipping the repair parts. And to to it off, x-arcade suggests to use RedHapp which isn't even a good option. So now you've spent more money on Happs just to install them, find out they suck and have to buy even more parts, pay for more shipping, spend more time waiting for stuff to arrive in the mail to manually fix the brand new product *Again*... And so on.
What would you call that product?

The ORIGINAL version of those Happ sticks, from before the Suzo merger, are called the IL Eurostick. I know you can get them on Paradise Arcade shop for about $14, probably on Amazon too. • @HystericalHuntress
    @HystericalHuntress 5 років тому

The Hayabusa is one of the worst levers on the market, it's extremely loose and has reliability / QC issues. What? You also didn't really cover Korean parts at all and left a lot out in general. This is a poor video. There's more out there than you listed. Sanwa, Seimitsu, Happ, Crown, Taeyoung, Myoungshin, Hori.. there's so many manufacturers out there from all over the world.
You can also change actuators, springs, levers, tops, microswitches and a few other things on sticks to customize them to your liking.. which you covered on one stick, but ignored when talking about another.
This video is pretty bad. You also don't really put enough emphasis on how 95% of what you covered is personal preference and none of it is going to be ideal for every person.
