I used to work 10 hours a day 4 days a week. I always had 3 days off. When you go to a four day work week, don’t call in because you have a Doctors appointment on working Wednesday when you’ve got Monday off.

@Paul Domnich I work in the gym and I also own a tanning salon. I workout 6 days a week. I'm actually training for a show right now. Lol. I make plenty of time for family and recreational activity. You can't automatically assume people who work a lot don't enjoy life. IT'S ALL ABOUT TIME MANAGEMENT. You're used to being around the average person who would probably not enjoy life if they worked 6 days a week.

Add commuting time, time for meals , shopping , laundry etc. How much time do you have left for family, recreation etc? I work 5 days a week at my buisness and wish I had more family time, recreation time, time to learn something new like a second language. Hats off to you if you have achieved that kind of balance with your work load

Not all jobs can be squeezed into 4 days. Some require daily presence.

Good bye full-time jobs. I’m not saying there aren’t some jobs that would fit nicely into a 4 day week, just not all.

In my industry, the norm is to work 3 or 4 days a week .

At the coal mine here where I work at in Utah we work 4 days a week 12 hours a day then the weekend crew's work 3 days a weekend on 13 and a 1/3 hour shifts it's the best schedule ever

People in Europe are happier. Americans work comparitavely long hours and score low on the happiness index. I read a study analyzing how hunter gatherer people spend their time, I think it was the masai. They spend about 20 hours a week "working" and much of that we would call recreation like fishing and hunting. The rest of the time is r & r. We are still genetically hunter gatherers and we havent evolvedto thrive on the treadmill most are on

A study came out showing that employees who worked four days a week were more productive overall. The idea is that employees with more free time are just happier and work harder because of it.
Moreover, most people in this country earn much less than they actually produce. I would argue that what this guy is saying is an incredibly harmful and reductive mentality.

if the four-day work week is mandated by law, as an employer I can cut benefits and salaries to make up for the inefficiencies. I'll draw up contracts for the people that would like to work a 5-day 40 hour week and restore their salary and benefits. If anyone that has a problem with that, I'll consider that a resignation.

At the turn of the century so much technology was coming that people assumed we would have to or three day work weeks, and the best they got was going from 6 to 5. We are overdue for going to 4. Once we switch to a totally socialized healthcare model, I could see this conversation being very different
They're gonna drop "full time" to 32 hours and increase pay to offset loss of hours. The companies in the UK claim they're making more money, but the UK also isn't America. As long as we ensure no federal money goes to this, companies have to foot the bill, and they don't just raise prices to compensate then great. I think it'll end up being a hidden tax like Machi says.
It's not a hidden tax. Businesses just dont want to cover the costs of doing business. That's the scam of capitalism. The entire idea is based off an unequal exchange.
It will also make companies less productive and therefore in some companies that have foreign competition these people that think they're going to suddenly get 4-day work weeks are going to get 0 day work weeks

UK research that his suggestion is based on, shows that workers are MORE productive. So much so, the companies involved in the pilot decided to keep the 4 day workweek. Gain in productivity usually benefits management and shareholders, but why should that always be the case? The employees are more productive, not those stakeholders. Combined with ongoing automation, this should be a serious option for the future

When I worked @ Dre$$er, we worked 10 hour days. 5 days one week, the next, 4 days (=9 in 2wks). I got used to that EASY.
I too have worked a 4 day work week 10 hours a day. 3 days off every week allows you to get personal business done without taking time off.
And if an individual company decides that that would work best for them at least for some of their employees that's fine

When working, we had a choice between working 5 days of 8 hours, and 4 days of 10 hours. We opted for 4 days a week. Same hours and pay but less traveling and a long weekend.
So why not pick up a second job for the three days you don't work your 4x10s?

@@RajHK8 4x10 hour days are not more than 5x8 hour days... technically the math is the same.
And if you take into account the prep time for 4x 10 hour days versus the prep time for 5x 8 hour days then you're actually being 20% more efficient with the 4x 10 hour days. You save probably an hour of getting ready time and the commute to work for getting to go in one less day per week for the same amount of hours worked.
Modern companies with flexible productions/work are giving this option and having great results.

Friday was 8 hours.
2nd week 4-9 hour days
And Friday was off.
We used to work 10 hours a day,7 on Friday, hours have been cut to 8hours a day 7 on Friday, we could do 10hiurs Monday to Thursday and be doing 1 hour more than we are right now, makes perfect sense, ppl should be off more days than they have to work, shouldn't we?

This proposal is for 4 8 hour days for the same pay as five 8-hour days and it does appeal to people who are lazy. Lots of people work hours less than 40 hours a week for a variety of reasons and there's nothing wrong with that as long as the reason isn't that they're unwilling to work hard. So spare your fake outrage for somebody else. Your veteran friends would probably like me better than you. Nobody on the planet has more respect than me for veterans. I was raised by a guy who was a world war II Marine corps gunnery Sergeant, gunny by the age of 21, fought at Guadalcanal from day one.
