Where Did Each Charm Come From? - Hollow Knight Lore

- Based on what we know from Hollow Knight's lore about how charms came into being, I discuss the possible origins of every charm in the game and what may have created them.
I have my own hypothesis regarding the Weaversong charm. Based on the Dream Nail dialogue of the Weaver corpses where the charm is found, I think the Weavers made it as a gift for Hornet. A way for their princess to be protected. Unfortunately, after it was completed, the Weavers lacked the time or opportunity to get it to her. Hence why you find it where it is.
That is a smart idea.
That's a good idea...
Except Hornet can't wear Charms...
@@cacovonluca You can pick charm notches up in the world and Salubra sells them. I don't think it would be impossible for Hornet to get her hands on some to wear the charm if she ever acquired it.
Explains the song part
And weavers kind of weave silk(siped webs silk, same trust)
The dreamnail dialogue of the weavers near weaversong are "...Princess..." and "For protection..." implying that this charm was made for Hornet in order to protect her
In my opinion the fragile charms were born from Leg Eater wishes: a great vitality cause he has a fragile body (he's always shaking), enough geo to become a king (in his dream nail dialogue says that) cause he's poor, and a strenght that no one could stop cause he has no muscles, unfortunately his will was fragile as he so the charms are how we know, only with the help of a greater will (like the one Divine has) can transform this fragile desires into unbreakable ones.
I dunno maybe im wrong
Agreed! It seems as though he made them with the desire of strength, greed, and heart - but his will was not quite strong enough as he lacked the powerful emotion needed to make a true charm, though it was just enough that they could be formed and still give off their potent effect.
@@Bubblegum-Cupcakecould this in some way explain why the Grimm troupe lady (I forget her name sorry) ate him??? She feeds off people hopes and dreams (pathetic hopes and dreams) idk she seems messed up 😭
About the Fragile charms, in Leg Eater's dialogue he says he makes them himself. That could explain why they're fragile since he has to make them from his campfire thing in the background. (The shell around the charms look similar to the cracked egg thing in his room)
He “makes” them. Surrounded by the dead bugs of Hallownest, who were known for being capable of being greedy, craving power, and desiring health. They’re probably fragile because they come from Husks, which have already compromised desires.
I think void heart is actually a charm created by the player character, ghost, the knight, whatever you wanna call the lil thing.
It's revealed after your memory, one where you were very likely wishing that you were hollow, that you were perfect, that you were chosen.
Also the fact you can't unequip it and it takes no space.
It’s implied that the void heart was always there at the center of the kingsoul. I have a separate video on the void heart where I go into more detail about it
The Midwife says the Weaversong is proof of the Weavers' skill with their looms; so they probably just crafted it somehow.
Bauldur Shell is surrounded by the corpses of other Baulders, so it may have come to be in a similar way to the Heavy Blow.
One take on fragile charms that I quite like comes from the Unofficial Hollow Knight TTRPG, saying that they're twisted by an attempt to force the charm into being by manipulating the bug it came from, such as by sacrifice or torture.
I think Fury of the Fallen might've come from a bug's deep hatred of the enemy that killed it.
Or a wandering hero who defended someone from an enemy, succumbing to injuries after gaining a boost in strength from adrenaline and beating the foe. The Charm does mention the power and HEROISM of those about to die.
To me I think the reason Soul Eater was left in the tomb was because of what it represents to the snail shamans. It's called a relic of the past, as in a surviving item from a history long gone, and in addition is described as charm meant specifically to draw the soul from still living entities, meaning essentially this is a charm designed for the express purpose of stealing the soul of others, certainly often to the point of killing them. This suggests a much more cruel and barbaric society of snail shamans than we can catch a glimpse of during the game, the only other shaman charms are shaman stone, which simply strengthens ones mastery of spell casting, and soul catcher, which states that it's intended to draw in soul from the environment around it, a much more kosher version of soul eater. They wanted to leave their barbaric history behind, and with it, the soul eater charm, which represents this barbarism.
ironic then that at least one snail shaman we know of would find themself victim to similar remarkably cruel tactics of soul extraction by the scholars of the sanctum.
I think a lot more of the charms are made rather than wished upon death, ones like spell twister or soul catcher are found in places like tools rather than a convenience from the dead, thorns of agony and sharp shadow are found in places of their element with no bugs in sight, grubberflys elegy might be from grubfather as he’s going to sacrifice himself, we even make a charm voidheart too, simply put a lot more looks like they could be made, especially the shopkeeper ones
I agree about most of theese, but lifeblood cores explanation of grubberflys elegy makes more sense to me. Also, many of the shopkeeper ones may just have been found
Iam convinced soul twister is an artificial tool, mostly because it has The same pear-like object That soul twisters, soul warriors, mistakes, follies, soul master, the wayward compass seems to Just be a normal compass.
@@youseff6393 I mean, Deep Focus was created in a crystal, Hiveblood is literally just the really nice honey concealed in The Hive’s boss room, Soul Eater is referred to as an artifact, implying it’s a created object. Defender’s Crest seems to be something Dung Defender created as a gift to a worthy warrior, Spore Shroom is weird, as it connects you to the mushroom hive mind, but it just seems to be a naturally occurring piece of mushroom. There’s basically no explanation for Gathering Swarm.
I personally think the fragile charms were made by Leg Eater because he can repair them but thats just my opinion.
I think so too. I’ll most likely make a video about how that works in the future
Tbh how leg eater makes his charms are really hard to rich on, but what I can tell. The charms may have come from leg eaters desire to become king as all the charms he offers seem to accommodate what one would initially expect a king to be, such is to have a lot of money then most, to be stronger therefore more intimidating then most, and to live longer, or at least be more resistant to damage then most. As for them being fragile is still somewhat of a misery. However it might have something to do with how divine is able to make them unbreakable.
@@Godlymusic9958 Maybe they're fragile because it was a dream that he know can't come true
@@Godlymusic9958 they’re probably fragile because they were handmade, not exactly formed by a sacred desire or strong emotion. They do contain powerful benefits, but they are still weak and imperfect. Divine, however, can somehow imbue them with what they lack, some sort of *divine* power which makes them true charms.
@@Godlymusic9958 PUN. HECKING. INTENDED.
I like these ideas! Especially the ones with grubsong, that wasn't a perspective I'd considered before.
Also you get fluknest upon flukemarms death
I think the fragile charms where made by leg eater somehow, this would explain why it’s fragile and I also think I saw some dream nail dialogue from leg eater that said he would make more charms
IS THE LIFEBLOOD CREATURE A HIGHER BEING?
Yes. I made a video about all the higher beings
@@lifebloodcore2106 OOOOO
I think you rely a little bit too much on the description of Salubra and that you could have search a little bit deeper for some charms, but that’s good job
I think some charms could be hand made, such as wayward compass or fragile charms
The leg eater says that the fragile charms are made by him
I don't think that the shaman charms would be wishes upon death I just think they're shaman tecnology.
Also I don't think that every charm was generated that way
My theory for Carefree Melody is that when Brumm lost his memories and became Nymm, he essentially died, and the charm was created. That's why it has his mask on it
Masks create entire new personalities and lock away the old ones, so Brumm likely counted as a separate entity, and his last wish for the carefree times before manifested as a protective spell. Heck, usually masks make it so that you can’t remember anything from your face’s life. Brumm just so happened to have a strong will, and he was just out of the Nightmare Heart’s gaze. But hey, there are more kingdoms, and Grimm doesn’t appear close to death yet, so the Ritual can probably take place somewhere else.
Fragile strength probably was from a bug who was trying to protect the king and wanted to help the king even in death
Great video! Honestly you deserve a lot more attention than you’re getting, these videos are great. My only problem with your theories is that I’m not sure that so many charms were from dying bugs, but a lot of them definitely are. Small nitpick, I definitely can’t give a better explanation than you do! Awesome job, subscribed.
Thank you so much, your words mean a lot. I’d really appreciate if you could share my videos so more people can see them. I really do put a lot of heart into these
@@lifebloodcore2106 oh can do. My friend got me into this game and he loves to watch videos and stuff with me even if he’s not too knowledgeable with the lore
@@lifebloodcore2106 would you say that you put a lot of *lifeblood heart* into your videos? :)
Slight problem. All fragile charms are made by leg eater, so I assume that’s why their fragile.
i think leg eater made the fragile charms he evens says so
I realized that after making this video. I talked about it in a different video later
i do heavely disagree with the quickslash one, i do belive it came from the wish of mastry that the ancient blacksmith had, similart to the nailsmith, the corpoise dialogue is "pure" as in not only the name but the concept of the pure nail, i realy digg that
the charms don’t always come from a bug who died. i think someone actually took the shell off a baldur for that one, or maybe they shed naturally
I have a theory of the fragile charms
They could be made by those who wanted to as you said
Have more life
More geo
And more power
But they didnt have the enough will to create the charm so it became fragile
And they become unbreakable cause divine uses her energy and will to create the charm how the real creator of the charm wanted it to be
Heavy blow, quick slash, long nail could be from the huge bugs where you find quick slash
i think that the fragile charms are from a dying bug who didint have a stonger will as the other bugs who made a charm. like the minimum witch makes it fragile insted of the full will to make in unbreakable
I think all the fragile charms are from the victims of leg eaters you see near him
Great video! All really solid ideas.
I think some bugs don't have to die for a charm to form. Higher beings just seem to be able to make them by will alone.
A common bug may manage to attain the ability through lots of study and practise.
Nailmaster's Glory and the fragile the fragile charms where probably all made consciously by their givers.
Other times it seems to be a uniting thought of a group of bugs that manifests, like with grubsong or mark of pride.
It's as if strong desire makes a bug's soul spill out and attach itself to other things, which some learn to direct with purpose.
THe fact that multiple bugs wanted to make heavy blow is insane.
This is really cool! Keep up the good work
Ya know charms don’t always need to be from a bugs dying wish, leg eater creates his charms, and deep focus was naturally formed by the crystals not a bug. Not all charms are from a dying bugs last wish.
I believe some charms are formed naturally, given how thorns of agony is surrounded by a forest of thorns, like deep focus's description.
I always thought that dreamshield came from markoth when he died as he uses it in his fight. maybe it was his final wish to give someone his weapon.
5:35 my assumption would be that they had a lesser will. Or the charm was made accidentally.
How a charm is from a dying explains why most charms are infront of a corps in the back ground
1:26 I thought it came from a moth, because of the little icon that resembles a moth’s head and antennae, and since the charm sends out lumaflies, which are also associated with the moths. As for the “nothing being left behind” thing, I think it symbolizes how the moths abandoned the Radiance in the pursuit of worshipping the Pale King. That’s my take, anyway.
So, the fragile charms were made by leg eater. ( it says so in his dialogue or dream nail dialogue) but the the theories still work.
Edit: WAIT WHAT IF LEG EATER KILLED THE PEOPLE TO GET THE CHARMS!
Am i the only one that thinks dashmaster charm looks like sans? Or is there other people?
A lot of people agree with you
the fragile charms could just be made by leg eater because of his dream nail dialogue and that could be why they are fragile
WEVER CAN CREATE CHARM,STORIES ETC BY THEIR SILK.AN I RIGHT?
AM I RIGHT?
Yes. Weavers are able to make silk into multiple different things
Why is lil bro screaming
@@avis_06 BRO THAT'S MY STYLE TO TYPE
I am pretty sure that leg eater said he made the fragile charms
Maybe fragile charms are from bugs wishes that was dropped like a dream that they forgot
Maybe someone temporarily wished to be stronger, richer, healthier.
Radiance if you could have all 42 different charms at the same time:
💀🖕
Surely the focus charms were forged rather than a death wish?
13:52 maybe it was Esmy?
the fragile charms are made by leg eater
