Bosnia's Last Nomadic Village: Trekking to Lukomir | Bosnia Travel Guide

  • The remote Belasica mountains in Bosnia & Herzegovina are known for their rugged terrain and stunning natural beauty. But these mountains are also home to some little-known villages where inhabitants still live nomadic lives.
Today, we take a 16 km hike through this breathtaking landscape to explore the nature of the Bosnian mountains, investigate the villages of Umoljani and Lukomir, and discover what it's like to be living in the 21st century as a pastoral nomad.
Lukomir is one of Europe's most remote nomadic villages, and here we will meet locals, enjoy Bosnian coffee (the first coffee I ever finished!) and devour a delicious home-made lunch, whilst learning about how they survive and live.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is an undiscovered gem. I randomly decided to visit not knowing much at all and was shocked at how breathtaking the country is, and how friendly and welcoming the people have been. The food is also fantastic, and the adventures have been affordable!
I highly recommend you visit Bosnia to experience its culture, nature, and understand its history.

After seeing your video about Lukomir I really wanted to see it. So I booked a day hike. All I can say is that it was wonderful from the first moment to the last. My god the view was just amazing, the weather was fantastic. One of the high light of our trip to Bosnia. The lunch in the village was great. Will recommend and will do it again. Thanks.

Enjoyed the video, I am hoping to do something similar when all the restrictions ease up so just doing a bit of research. Looks amazing, I didn’t realise the village would embrace tourists like that. Would you recommend an overnight stay in one of the guest houses?

Hi Matt. I'm stoked to hear you're planning a trip here. It certainly is a gem. I would definitely recommend an overnight stay; the main reason being, you'll most likely be one of very few, if not the only one staying there with the villagers.
I have written a blog about my experience in Lukomir here: travelmvmt.com/hiking-to-lukomir-the-nomadic-bosnian-village-frozen-in-time/

@@travelmvmt Thanks for the information. I'm not sure yet whether I'll join a tour or hike it solo and spend a bit more time in the mountains - it's certainly a beautiful place judging by your video. Brilliant blog post by the way, it sounds exactly like the experience I'm after.

Bosnian people are known as one of the most welcoming people on Earth its part of our culture to open up to foreigners and welcome them into our homes because its part of our identity. They would welcome anyone regardless of where you from, foreign or not,but foreigners get even more welcomed because they know you are not from there, that you dont know anything about them, that you might be hungry and dont like the food they have and they will go out of their way to make you feel as welcomed and as home as possible. You can literary walk to the door of any house regardless if its 3am or 3 pm and say im hungry and they will welcome you in and share what they have with you.For example during the Spanish inquisition and the expulsion of Sephardic Jews from Spain no country in Europe allowed them to come into their country and all sided with Spain except Bosnia.Bosnia opened its country up and allowed all to freely come and settle and they have lived here ever since...In bigger cities and in villages you can find a Mosque,Synagog,Churches of all sides be it Catholic,Orthodox or other, all in the same area one next to the other or across the street and its always been like this. But to get back to Lukomir they would welcome you, they would be happy with you filming,if you do stay you CANT REFUSE to eat (its seen as disrespectful take it from me)and if you do spend the night, you will be the main focus of the village in the sense of your safety, comfort, health and so on.Greetings from Neum,Bosnia

Because it's a little out of the way and isolated, I'd recommend a tour with Funky Tours (I don't get paid to promote them). I've met the owner and many of the staff and they helped give me a more local Bosnian experience which I like.
Feel free to message me for tips on my Instagram @travelmvmt. ✌️
