Bias of Priene: The Honourable Judge

- Bias is one of the seven sages of ancient Greece, a collective of rulers, thinkers and profoundly wise individuals who helped shape the world of Archaic Greece. Bias was born in Priene, in western Anatolia, modern day Turkey and he was highly regarded, even among the seven sages. Regrettably, the knowledge we possess regarding his life is quite limited, hence the length of this video.

- Do not be in a hurry to undertake something. When, however, you do, stay fixed to that until the end.

- You should state that the gods exist.
- Listen to everything.
- If you are poor do not accuse the rich, unless you benefit much everyone.
- Hope is the sweetest thing for humans.
- It is a disease of the mind to desire what is impossible and to have no regard for the misfortunes of others.
- Difficult is to bear a change of fortune for the worse with magnanimity.
- Whatever good fortune befalls 'you, attribute it to' the gods
- Cherish wisdom as a means of travelling from youth to old age, for it is more lasting than any other possession
- You will be remembered well by your good deeds
you will become more pious with the passing of time
you will be more brave, with your behaviour,
you will be more self-controlled, by working hard,
you will have more respect, by instilling fear,
you will have more friends, by becoming richer, you will be more persuasive, by exercising reason,

I don't think ancient greeks had lawyers, or judges?
While they didn't have a system that resembles the modern justice system, they most definitely had public courts. It is true that lawyers were not like the lawyers today. They were more like public orators who spoke in defense of/or against someone. Regarding the judges, in the public courts there could either be individual judges or a group of judges like the Aeropagus in Athens. According to the writer Diogenes Laertius, Bias was both a judge and a lawyer.

@@Frog_king11 Not really. I did not misrepresent the true history, because he was actually a lawyer and a judge. At least according, to the ancient sources. I just explained in my previous comment that lawyers back then were not like the lawyers today. (That's maybe the only thing that I should have made more clear in my video) And I also explained that judges did exist back then, either as individuals or as a council, much like modern times. So I did not ''claim'' anything, I just stated what the sources said.
