  • Athearn Genesis GP38-2: By the early 1970s, many first generation diesels were reaching the end of their service lives. The most common replacement
locomotive became the GP38-2. EMD began production of the 16-cylinder, non-turbocharged, 2000 horsepower engine in 1972. Unlike the GP38’s engine, which drove a generator to supply power to the traction motors, the GP38-2s prime mover drove an alternator which produced AC electrical current that was rectified to DC to power the four traction motors. Another major change for the GP38-2 was the introduction of the “dash 2” modular electrical cabinet. For more than 40 years, the GP38-2 has worked main line freights, locals, switching jobs, yard service, helpers, snow fighting trains,
and hump power. Many remain in service today.

You guys should unleash more GTW GP38's. I see plenty of BN and SP already.

Understood, there are so many GP38-2s we could do and maybe in a future run, we'll offer some GTW. For this run we wanted to do something a bit different, hence the former Frisco units in Cascade green as well as Cleveland Electric and Atlanta and St. Andrews Bay units. Feel free to send us an email at athearn-productsuggestions@athearn.com and let us know about those GTW Geeps!

I preordered thru Lombard Hobbies an Illinois Central model. I have three of your previous release Genesis GP38-2 models in ICG paint.

Do they charge you for the pre-order and ship it the moment they get it in, or do they hold it until you pay up?

Thank you for your business, we are happy to hear you liked the Illinois Central units. Are there other Midwest roads you think Athearn should do in future runs?

Not at all, Lombard does not charge and you won'tbe obligated to make a purchase. They will email or call you when your order is ready. If you decide not to purchase it they will sell it to someone else.

I would love to see Athearn produce some Kansas City Southern EMD GP38-2 models in either White, Gray or Southern Belle paint schemes.

Thank you for the kind words on our models. Yes the GP38-2 is a great work horse in the prototype world as well as HO.

Sorry we did not offer your favorite roads, but we will run the GP38-2s again. If you haven't done so yet, please send us your road choice requests to athearn-productsuggestions@athearn.com It's not a guarantee, sometimes new tooling is involved, but its something we can track and maybe produce if we get enough requests.
