GoHerping A video or explanation Id like to see is how you can turn a 20 gallon on its side for Anoles or Chameleons and such. Wouldn't the substrate fall out every time you open the cage? How do you get around this?
GoHerping I was dying when you said I'm holding this plant to look more professional but I have a question did you find that plant near the dead guy in the Japanese suicide forest
You are honestly the most impressive reptile keeper. I have never seen someone be more concerned on your reptiles happiness! Keep up the great work Alex!
lol holding a plant to look more reliable haha! I have my two colubrids in vivariums without false bottoms. I made a really good mix of good drainage soil, sphagnum moss, coco chips, and orchid bark (aka reptibark) help create those mini air pockets. Also because your setup and my setup are more temperate style vivariums there's really no need for a false bottom. If you're keeping super tropical plants like moss or an enclosure that requires a lot of humidity, like for frogs or even crested geckos, a false bottom would almost be required
Ima simplify this for everyone. Just use the bio dude’s substrate. You don’t need a drainage layer for certain ones, including the one you use for ball pythons.
Good alternatives. Although what i get from this is that its still just simpler, easier and more beneficial to just do a false bottom XD Good to experiment with though.
Alex, my biology teacher uses a heat rock for her bearded dragon and when I was holding her in class today I noticed a burn on the bearded dragons hand. I want to tell my teacher buuuuut she my teacher sooooo Halp wat do I do
oof. Maybe be like "hey, I learned that heat rocks actually aren't the best heating option because [etc etc] and the beardie may be happier if we use [etc etc]." You could offer to set it up if she buys something different for heating. Or you could email her some resources talking about them if you don't want to bring it up in person lol.
You ever tried just cheap cork board tiles? I was improvising when our baby ball python moved in, and he's been in the tank for 3 months along with the "coconut soil". Have YOU tried it? Thx
I C I made a "bioactive" vivariums for mine. It's a 20 gallon long filled with spider plants. I quote bioactive cuz it doesn't have any springtails or cleanup crew so technically not a bioactive, just a living vivarium. The substrate is kept too dry for springtails and Leo's poop in a corner like a cat so once in awhile I just go pick it up. My substrate is a mix of coco coir and sand for drainage. His "litter box" is essentially just a layer of sand and dry substrate so it clumps up just like kitty litter
If I add a drainage layer in my bioactive enclosure does there need to be a hole drilled in the tank for the water to actually come out of the tank, or just a layer of gravel with a screen over it then dirt?
I want to use the Reptisun LED UVB panel on my Corn Snake so since it doesn't send off any extra heat, How would I keep my snakes temperature up at 70-80 degrees?
Are they having difficulties with it being too high or too low? If it's too high, a thermostat will take care of the issue, if it's too low, you may need additional or stronger heat sources depending on the species.
do you know of any websites that list safe live plants for reptiles, amphibians, tarantulas, etc? i want live plants but i want to make sure theyll be safe for my animals
Emmett Battle you can just get them from your local Home Depot or lowes, just get the plants that aren't already treated for insects cuz they'll definitely have pesticides in them. Then you rinse out all the soil from the roots, really rinse off the entire plant, and replant in your own soil. You can even do a quick bleach dip to kill off any pests that might be living in your plant. Then you just quarantine your plant. Serpa Designs quarantines his for a few months before adding to his tanks, but I don't bother. If I had frogs or other amphibians though, I would definitely quarantine since their skin absorbs everything from the moisture around it. For sensitive species like those I would probably buy online from dart frog suppliers cuz they grow their own plants and make sure everything is safe. Josh's Frogs is a good place to get safe plants from. But for my snakes and geckos, I just really cleaned the Home Depot plants.
All I'm doing right now is using coconut fiber and cypress mulch, keeping dead leaves available, along with any snake poop I don't get to. Then, the microfauna (springtails) eat away at this stuff, sort of like earthworms do.
I’m just barely three years late 🤓 was wondering if there’s a possibility you remember where you heard about keeping the plants in their pots and creating a bioactive enclosure that way
@@nandohernandez9078 how has it worked for you? I think mine are experiencing root rot because they’re turning black and yellow, but it also could be over watering
@@Yessi.caaAaaa i use repti soil and there are only a couple plants that are compatible with soil unless you use pots, you really should only be using about a cup each plant. i just started and i make sure roots are wet everyday and i see some growing but one plant is turning yellow maybe bcuz not enough uvb
@@nandohernandez9078 I’m using the bio dudes soil for my ball python and it seems to be doing every thing it claims. I mean it dries at the top which helps prevent scale rot and at the bottom it holds the moisture. I’ve noticed it doesn’t puddle at the bottom or anything which is good the only problem I have is I have gnats and the plants are dying.
How does Alex not have 1 million subs yet? His content is better than youtubers that have over a million. Alex your doing a great job!👌 Also I'm not saying this because I want to get my comment a heart.
I wanted to give my ball python belly heat which is hard with a lot of stuff inbetween him and the glass. That, and, it just seemed like a pain to make lol
I've been told the same once or twice... but it's literally a piece of solid material which is physically impossible to eat. I love using it with my leopard gecko
dude its pretty much impossible its like dipping your hands in water and not getting wet, but be careful i have seen leopard geckos teeth becoming stuck on a thread of reptile carpet but its rare and i use eco earth because it will not cause impaction and its great for shedding
ReptileRampage345 maybe if they were eating little strings of the felt coming loose...it could get stuck in their stomachs like hair that won't pass. But probably highly unlikely.

"I'm holding a plant to seem more reliable" this is why I love you XD
"So your water doesn't get too wet"
Snd's Zoo damn you to hell
Snd's Zoo lol
Water is not wet!
You beat me to it ):
The comment I was looking for an the first comment I saw
Is water wet the answer may shock you
Owen Hudson nobody should of ever been shocked at the answer
Nope. Water is not and cannot be wet. "Wet" means something has a liquid on it. Since water is a liquid, it cannot be wet!

I've started liking your vids instinctively ,because they're always so helpful

Thanks for this video. Sometimes the false bottoms just look so bad in an otherwise great looking vivarium.
Very nicely done.
thanks!

I'd point out the burn to her
Alex I sent the email 😬
Luckily she’s a nice teacher
great video can you please do pacman frog care
I love your intro music!
how much water should i be using for my bioactive snake tank? i hit the roots directly but everywhere else the soil is super dry in middle
Young man thanks for great info
You ever tried just cheap cork board tiles? I was improvising when our baby ball python moved in, and he's been in the tank for 3 months along with the "coconut soil". Have YOU tried it? Thx
i love your vids and you should do a video on making a natural tank for leopard geckos because that would be awesome

I want to use the Reptisun LED UVB panel on my Corn Snake so since it doesn't send off any extra heat, How would I keep my snakes temperature up at 70-80 degrees?
I'd suggest a heat mat with a corn snake for temps www.goherping.com/cornsnaketemperature
What about using only charcoal as a drainage layer?
What is your advice on how to keep the temperature up in your terrarium. My friend has a 40 gallon tank and was wondering..
Are they having difficulties with it being too high or too low? If it's too high, a thermostat will take care of the issue, if it's too low, you may need additional or stronger heat sources depending on the species.
GoHerping
They are, I told them to get a ceramic heat emitter to help out with the temperature.
Thank you.

ah, the framed avocado.
It's made its reappearance
Sour patch kids
0:53 pretty sure water is always wet
how do you keep the nutrition of the substrate in a bioactive vivarium?

What is price for a corn snake
