- Once upon a time in a land far far away.
There was a team that not only scraped into the finals but were there to stay.
The experts said they had little to no chance.
Finishing out side the top 4 thinking they could make the big dance.
They hit form at the most important time of the year.
Giving their fan base a huge reason to cheer.
Training and playing all season hoping to play deep into September.
To create a fairytale that their fans will always remember.
We are looking at teams from the NRL era that also defied the odds and had a surprisingly successful finals run that many fans and experts would not have a predicted. For this list, the team must have finished outside of the top 4 and must have made either the preliminary final or the grand final. None of these teams ended up winning the big one, but they sure made their fan base proud by winning some of the most important games of the season, as underdogs.

I will always remember the Cowboy's run in 2017. As a mad keen North Queensland supporter, I was so happy when they got to the Grand Final.

@@peter-josephlamusitele6296 in regards to the NRL yes u are right but overall u are wrong, in 1995 in the ARL Sydney Bulldogs finished 6th and they made the Grand Final and they beat 1st placed minor premiers Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 17-4, wasn’t a Dogs fan but I was cheering for them though good to see Manly lose that one as I hate them

17:20 is one example of why I stopped watching games live. The way the commentators for over a decade have complained and whinged about refereeing decisions ruins the experience. It was a knock on! A clear knock on and they carry on like it's the wrong call! And it's every bloody game! They've conditioned so many NRL fans to hate the refs now to the point where that's all people focus on now.

The greatest is 1995 by far!!! Middle of the super league war, 6 players defecting mid season and they go all the way from 6th beating manly in the final when they all agreed to do it for their mates. no comparison!

that 2010 tigers prelim haunts me to this day. never have i been so sad in a finals series. it was a rough day to be a tigers fan.

Their could easily have been just two teams Dragons and Bulldogs in a top 10 list like this due to the regularity they did late season big runs to get deep into the semis. The first ever and only winner outside of top 4 (broncos 93 5th the exception) was Bulldogs in 95 and they were only challenged by Dragons in 6th vs 7th. Most pundits at the time said the winner of that game would win the Comp due to both having won 9 of their previous 10 games. To further emphasise the Dragons went from 7th to the GF the following year. Both of those runs should have made the list

I'm a NQL supporter. 2017 was amazing. I attended the semi and the prelim. It's such a shame that for some reason match highlights have been uploaded to YT.
Also, in the 2017 prelim, there is a bloke waving a striped yellow and blue flag. That's me. 1 of the best nights.

Tigers 2005. Half way through the season coming 3rd last. Playing 250/1 to win the comp. finish 4th and end up winning the premiership.

Cowboys 2005 would come close. Yes, they finished 5th but were absolutely destroyed by Tigers 50-6 in qualifying final. Somehow they beat Storm 24-16, then smashed the premiers Parramatta 29-0 in the prem to make the GF. Crazy final series.
I'd argue that the Tigers of 2005 should be on a list like this. Even though they made the top 4, nobody expected them to win the comp and they didn't even look like making the 8 for the first half of the year but they had an amazing back half of the season and then pretty much blew everyone away in the finals. Panthers of 2003 don't go on this list because they were minor premiers but their whole season was pretty much a fairytale because the team had been easy beats in the past 2 seasons and average-below average for over 10 years. Those were the two most unlikely premiers I've seen in my 30 or so years of watching the game.

True but Tigers blitzed everyone in the second half of the season. When they smashed Cowboys in the qualifying final, you just knew they'd win it.
Would Love Titans to have a fairytale finals run. They are not my team but I picked them for Top 8 this year and have enjoyed some of their footy this year.
They would've if it wasn't for Herbert's brain fart against my team in the first week of finals in 2021.

Don't know what you're even talking about since there were no Storm fairytale runs. Eels from 2005 wasn't a fairytale. They were minor premiers and were thrashed 29-0 by the Cowboys in a prelim final lol.

Tigers run in 2010 was a good one during the finals, should’ve beaten the Roosters in week 1. Heartbreaking loss against the Dragons in the Grand Final Qualifier then in 2011 remember that game against the Warriors poor Tigers were robbed in that game no way Krisnan Inu grounded that ball on the line the first time after his elbow clearly touched the ground had another go and grounded the ball on the line for a controversial try by the video referee, classic double movement that one.

One error in this video. Bears had a season in 1999 before merging, so 1998 was not their last as a stand alone club

I think the Rabbitohs run of 2020 was better than the Knights run of 2013. Otherwise a good list
yeah some people were even saying we wouldn't make top 8
The Knights have been largely mediocre since Johns retired. So making the prelim final in 2013 was a big deal for them, unexpected and therefore a 'fairytale'. Souths had been back to back prelim finalists prior to 2020 so their run wasn't as surprising, even though they weren't that consistent during the regular season.. The Knights 2013 team beat Storm in Melbourne in a final as well.
@@pantherz9103 A good argument, however, there was a point in 2020 that people thought Souths weren't going to even make the finals in 2020. They kind of went on a run at round 12 against the Dragons with an Adam Reynolds concussion pushing Walker and Mitchell into form. They then beat the Broncos, the Cowboys in a thriller at Townsville, and then thrashed the Sea Eagles with a lot of players injured 56-16. After that, Parra were hot off keeping the Storm to 0, and the Bunnies kept THEM to 0, and scored 38. A close loss to the storm, a poor [performance against the Tigers and a loss to the at the time cellar dweller Dogs (who after that would finish 15th) saw Souths drop in form again. Then they beat the twice defending premiers in a record margin for the club 60-8. Beat the Knights in an okay performance Week 1, and probably the biggest shock was beating Parra after coming back from 18-8 and beating them a second time in the year. Parra were a premiership favourite after Round 15 and Souths beat them twice. Then they went within a 40/20 miss-kick of beating Penrith. All of that without Mitchell after Round 16. That being said the Knights run of 13' was a great run, but I think Souths did better by a Bee's dick difference.
