Question of curiosity for you other hostlers out there. At our center, we have all Capacity yard mules. We have a handful of old mules that are still in pretty good shape for their age. Run great and just honestly never give us any issues at all. Old, but still super reliable. But, here recently, we've gotten 2 brand new mules within about a 6 months time frame. Those two mules have been constant problems since the day we got them. Every light on the dash keeps coming on, constant 5th wheel issues, going into limp mode, etc. Every time we get these things back from either the shop or dealership for repairs, they might last two days before they go down again. My question is. When y'all get brand new mules, do y'all have this much trouble out of your mules as well at first? Is this just a thing where they have to work all the bugs out of them? I've only been hostling for about 3-1/2 years. And these two new mules are the first brand mules we've gotten during my time in the yard. I was just curious if this is a common thing with new mules.
I work at a FedEx Hub in Cali and we are gassing it when we backup our trailers. We have a very busy yard and with all the contractors picking up there loads we don't have time to idle it back to the door.
The driver working as switcher. Has to be jumping in and out and lowering landing gear, as well as connecting and disconnecting air and electrical for the trailers. And how about opening the trailer doors or dose he have to be called back to pull the trailer foward as need to unload trailers. Tough job!!
It’s an easy job. First the truck has a hydraulic lift on the fifth wheel to pick up the trailer, so no touching the landing gear, second, I think all or most fed ex trailers like the one he backed up have roll doors so the dock person can just open the door when they’re ready to load/unload the trailer.
Yeah, I see that FedEx trailers have it very easy to drop and unhook. No air hose to disconnect or landing gear to lower and no hinged double doors to open. Just the back wheels need to be chocked. How could of I missed all that. I really need to pay more attention to what the driver was doing in the vlog. Thanks for replying
Probably not allowed, especially at a logistics job. Fedex, UPS, Amazon etc doesn't allow it. Even if it was, you should know better than to do them if you don't have to, safety over pride homie... nobody on the dock will be impressed and the other spotters have their own work to worry about 😆
I started off as a package handler and will be a switcher at my facility. I drove long haul for 14 yrs, so this should be a nice gig for me.
it definitely is man
I just became a switcher at my hub with 28’ pup trailers and 53’ trailers this video was mint. Ty
Do you need experience or they train you?

I see you guys are starting to use ticco yard trucks we got them here at the ups hub in Kansas City
FedEx freight doesn’t use them anymore. Honestly I’m not a fan of them, especially the placement of the fifth wheel release and brake buttons
