How To: Valve Adjustment on XR650L/XR600

  • This is just a quick video showing you how to adjust and check your valves on your XR650L/XR600. This normally is done (at least checks) every 4000 miles per the factory service manual or when your bike becomes hard to start or has a ticking noise.
    Make sure prior to adjustments your motor is cool (I'd recommend letting it sit overnight)
    Below are some specs used in the video!
    OEM Specs (NOT Hotcam):
    Intake Valves: .004"
    Exhaust Valves: .005"
    Lock nut: 18ft/lbs
    All valves are adjusted on the compression stroke. The trick to always get it on this stroke is to do what I showed in the video where you watch the intake valves go down and return up- then immediately start looking for TDC as you turn the motor over counterclockwise- SLOWLY! :)
    As always, feel free to comment below if you have any questions!

    Make sure to adjust your valves with the motor cold! I'd recommend letting it sit overnight! As always check the description for more details and specs! Thank you! :)

    Thanks for posting these "how to" videos for the xr650l. They are way helpful when I'm doing maintenance on my bike. Keep them coming!

      Of course! Let me know if you'd ever like to see a video that I havent made yet and I might be able to! Normally, I make videos on a as-it-breaks basis lol. Thanks for watching!

    I reference Fridays the bomb but he doesn’t use the factory tools that’s one thing that I like about your videos so you can use your videos on the trails versus just in the garage. My rear pouch is packed with Honda factory tools from my collection of bikes I have wrecked😂. Good job on another very informative and useful video

      I love the factory tools 😂. Glad you liked the video & if you'd ever like me to make a video I'm open to suggestions! I usually make my videos on a as my XR breaks basis 😂.

    You are awesome e thank you very much. I have a xr650 that needs valve train. Might check the 250 it has the tick.

    No mention of that big fin kit? I had never seen an XR650L like that and had to go and google to see what the hell it was. Are you going to do a video on that?

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  2 роки тому +5

      It was added when I built my motor to high higher compression and run harder, so I had Curt Winter weld them on so my chances of dropping a valve seat are lower & my bike can stay cooler overall :). Probably wont have a video on it though. Thanks for watching!

    How do one set the right hand exhaust valve. If it have decompressor. Should it be tdc or is it set differently

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  2 роки тому +1

      Just as I showed. It can be done with the others all at once. Just make sure you're on the right stoke by using the trick I showed in the video of watching the intake valves go down and then back up

    • @sergiofrailemendez7657
      @sergiofrailemendez7657 11 місяців тому +1

      Yes is different, get the TDC and then pass half turn and come back.. check the TDC again and if Now IS free...that is the moment to do...

    Do you have a video on the added cooling fins? Did you fabricate these or is there a kit?

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  6 місяців тому

      I had them done by Curt Winter on Facebook who does all kinds of aluminum fabrication and he's owned these bikes before. I don't have a video though.

    Buddy mine are tight in any revolution can't get the intake rocker to wiggle when I'm on true top dead centre or not when in at tdc only exhaust valves wiggle she's is hard to start from cold loss of compression and idle always races or drops it's defo tight intake valves isn't it and I subscribed to you mate 👍need new feeler gauges as mine starts at 005 and itnake vales on xr250r is 004

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  Рік тому +1

      Well the best news I have for you is tight valves are normal as they wear. It'll start significantly easier when they're loosened to factory spec again. Weird idle could be bc of your valves or perhaps your mixture screw/pilot jet need fiddled with or worst case the carb needs cleaned which is easy! I recommend the tusk feeler gauge set and don't be afraid to put a bend in them as it can make your readings more accurate! Best of luck and thanks for subscribing!

      @@one_terrabike3151 ok aland there wierd idling is always like it but it never happened since I put the mikuni tm33 pumper carb on what a difference that makes so yeh everything is pointing to valves and I got the tusk one on the way greeting from over the pond in the UK

    So I just spent the whole day double triple checking and I guess I was on the wrong stroke when checking TDC and now decompression lever doesn’t work and kicker is stiff as a rock

    Shouldn't valves be checked at operating temperature? Seems like that is when they would be most important.

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  2 роки тому +3

      No. The factory manual is what I base my videos from for the most part and this is just how Honda designed the RFVC motors. No flaw in this method and you don't have a chance of getting burned 😎

    Awesome videos. Super helpful as I jst got an XR650L for decent cheap, but it may require some tinkering. 07 w/ 13k
    I have a knocking sound at idle. Sounds bad to me. Goes away when reving though, and seems smooth. Soon as it'd idling it's clicking away. Adjusted valves and no change.
    ua-cam.com/video/tVSt85zlFyU/v-deo.html
    I was thinking decompression issue, but I don't know how to test that theory.

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  2 роки тому

      I think I'd be looking at doing a compression test next. See if that's the problem before needing to tear the motor apart. Does the noise go away when the bike is hot? Does it increase with RPM's? Let me know and I'll try to be of help! Even if you need a new top end these bikes are incredibly easy and cheap to rebuild!

    LMFAO ! Your kidding right? What boat did fall off , that's a first ,funny thing every video I've watch regarding value adj. Sez completely the opposite, Adjust your valves with the motor warm! Looks like we have a failure to communicate, what we're talking about here in this video is a Honda xf 650 big bore 4 stroke thumper ! What kinda bike were you referring too?

      I encourage you to look into Hondas service manual before commenting as that's where all my videos are based from. In quotes from the Factory service manual for the years 1993-current for the XR650L, "Inspect and adjust valve clearance while the engine is cold (below 35°C/95°F)." Page 3-5, 3-6
