  • Everyone knows by now that using metaphors skillfully allows you to persuade, influence, and charm other people with your verbal skills in a way that literal language does not.
    However, mediocre metaphors make no impact. If you are going to use metaphors, then you must use them skillfully.
    In this video, you will learn THREE steps that allow you to transform mundane and commonplace metaphors into memorable, impactful metaphors.
    Become a "master of metaphor" like Winston Churchill, Hank Moody, Ari Gold, and many other colorful personalities and historical figures!

    - I'm drowning in my thoughts
    - My thoughts are pulling me down to the deep dark abyss and drawing me
    - I'm being dragged down into a dark abyss where I'm being drowned by my suffocating thoughts that are igniting a burning sensation of entrapment and claustrophobia and setting my lungs on fire.
    Wth this actually works!!!! 😂 (p.s I'm good guys, that was just the first metaphor that came to my head and so I just developed it) ✌🏼

      That's personification and merely a metaphor. You gave human qualities and traits to various abstract objects that are high compared to actual human action. For instance, "drowning" and "pulling."

      Don't mean to discourage you... but your error is when you say that you're "being dragged down into a dark abyss where..." which will confuse people. People won't know that you're talking about your thoughts even when adding "by my suffocating thoughts" to it. They can get stuck at trying to figure out which abyss you're talking about... while you continue delivering passive vocabulary terminologies... even when re-reading the sentence several times, I'm not even talking about orating it. Maybe saying "cognitive abyss" would cut the mustard... ;) On the other hand overstuffed sentence will make many people roll their eyes... it should be short yet dense with info! Most people feel it when you try to be pedantic. Passive vocabulary words should be used 1-2 times max within a sentence or it should flow with a context among active vocabulary words that are more important in a sentence.
      Active vocabulary words are the one's we use comfortably. like the word comfortable. I don't have to re-explain it to my mind of it's definition.
      Passive vocabulary words are the one's we may know, but don't use it, or forgot, but can recall if reminded.

      (HOW ABOUT THIS ONE!!)
      My thoughts are now a dark abyss, dragging me by my throat down inside the chaotic maw of a bear that is my own mind, peeling my skin with it's sharp canine words, swallowing my whole being into the madness.

    The hard part is making this a habit. I've always loved how metaphors help explain difficult concepts. Do you cover that in your course?

    • @Artofverbalwar
      @Artofverbalwar  7 років тому +3

      Thanks for your feeback Unlucky13ification! Not explicitly. Using metaphor is just a deliberate choice one needs to start making and keep making, but the course will provide you tools to make metaphors/figurative speaking much much easier, and by making it easier, I think people will more often pull it out of their metaphoric toolbelts.

    The clouds were a malevolent army lurching through the blue sky above. I felt under pressure as the commanding sun screamed orders at its army of belevelant rays to penetrate the dense collosal army below with bullets of perplexing light.
    Is this good enough for an opening metaphor in my school project?

      @Music-zh4ly 2 роки тому +1

    • @itsme-jb9eb
      @itsme-jb9eb 2 роки тому +6

      Even though this comment is a year old and my opinion is irrelevant, I would've done something more like this:
      The clouds were a malevolent army lurching through the sky. I felt under pressure as the sun screamed orders at its army of rays to penetrate the army below with bullets of perplexing light.
      A lot of the words were adjectives just to prove you can use them, for example if the sun 'screamed', it's already implied that it's 'commanding', so adding too many adjectives are just a filler and make the writing seem clunky. That's just my opinion though, and like I said it's irrelevant lmao.

      Subtlety is key. It’s good to leave space for the reader to interpret the scene themselves, let their imaginations run wild with the words you have given them. Blend simple and complex writing together.

    My dome hits the pillow, the waves crash on my head,
    I forget where i'm at, i'm curled up in my bed.
    Sensations like I am dead. Rolling is in my head
    Waves that roll over my body which sinks like lead
    The depths of the water seducing me with a song,
    Plunging further to its depths, no sense of right or wrong
    craving fresh air, resurfacing I reflect,
    on the glassy wet surface sprawled out on my bed
    Wrote these lyrics based on this metaphor I created (using this video ofc): "My dreams are a pool of warm water seducing me to plunge further into its depths before reemerging with only the glassy surface to reflect on." Also the lyrics allude to me having pissed my bed at the end. Opinions? Did my lyrics capture the spirit of my original metaphor well? Did you catch the bed wetting joke?

    Do you do any training or know where I could get skills to use analogies and metaphors fluently during speaking?
    For example:
    Instead of: I don't want to break the software.
    Say: I don’t want to 'jeopardize' the 'integrity' of the software.
    Instead of: I want to make you happy and create great code at the same time.
    Say: I want to 'bridge the gap' between meeting your needs and best coding practices.
    Here is another exaggerated example: (similar to how politicians speak)
    'Essentially', I want to 'leverage' these tutorials with 'the whole notion of' becoming a better speaker.
    These tutorial will help 'dictate' how soon I gain 'traction' 'moving forward'.
    'Switch gears' to our software, the goal here is to 'reduce' the amount of 'discrepancies' and 'undesirable' behavior in this 'scenario', 'in order to drive', 'flexibility' and 'formulate' a plan to put all the 'moving parts' together and 'identify' 'opportunities' in the field. The 'trigger point' for me was in this 'use case' was to 'capitalize' on my strengths and 'revamp' my 'efforts', and 'illustrate' a great 'format', 'in terms of' 'launching' and 'investigating' the 'idea of' how to 'approach' new clients, in an 'environment', where it may look similar on the 'surface', but you want to 'expose' the correct 'infrastructure'. etc.
    I want to learn how to use metaphors and those kinds of words or phrases when I speak, and was wondering how do they learn to speak like that and if there were any daily practicing techniques I could do everyday to get better at doing it?
    Thanks in advance!

    The concept of creating action-driven metaphors is sound. HOWEVER, you extended the metaphor way too much, and you made it too intricate and too detailed to follow without relistening. Over-extending a metaphor DIMINISHES its effectiveness in terms of communication and persuasion. You must hit the right balance in terms of length and complexity so that people quickly, instantly, absorb the meaning, without having to pause, think, process, relisten. If you're speaking to an audience, and they have to pause and reflect on what you just said, then their mind is distracted, and they are no longer hearing what you are continuing to say --- you're losing them.
