Your Metro North train ride to Poughkeepsie was the best express ride I have ever seen. There was not lots of slow speeds while skipping the stations between Harlem-125 Street and Beacon. That is how an express ride is supposed to be.

Fantastic video, spectacular scenery, outstanding narration and very nostalgic for me as I was a regular rider from Croton-Harmon to GCT right around the time the M1's were introduced.
Amtrak should run trains from Grand Central again, like they used to. The Lake Shore limited (successor to the 20th Century Limited), used to run From Grand Central, before being moved to Penn.
Agreed Roast Beef. Even if its just 1-2 Roundtrips per day between only Albany and Grand Central. Plus with the LIRR about to start service (here in late 2022)it could also help with overcrowding with riders going to/from Long Island and the Hudson River Valley/Albany area.
Always enjoy your posts, especially the ride-alongs!! This trip is on my “must-do” list for the Spring. Will take Amtrak one way and Metro North the other (not sure of the order yet). While in Poughkeepsie want to take a run across the Walkway Over The Hudson!
I love taking this train out of Grand Central! Otis elevator building is now the Yonkers Public Library. Domino sugar 20:20 is still there though! The now abandoned Yonkers Power Station at 22:20 used to supply power to NYC trains before Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant took over.
That ex New York Central main up the Hudson River is a beautiful ride. I got a cab ride years out from NYC to Albany. Best ride I ever had. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic video as always Tim, and a great way to spend a lazy Saturday Afternoon! I used to make this round-trip as part of my Albany-Empire run every weekend in 2018 and part of 2019 before moving down into the city. I take the 5:08 home every day, except that day, March 18th, 2022. I was actually recovering from St. Patrick's Day at Mahoney's the day before. This is great commentary. Thank you! I do believe the current 5:29 out of GCT serves as the longest point to point non-stop. It runs from GCT to Beacon without the stop at Harlem 125th St.
I can imagine this looks beautiful in the summer with all the leaves out, right now it looks a little depressing with all the bare trees; spring can't come soon enough.
Awesome ride on Metro North #849 to Poughkeepsie also on March 27th the other two Hotshots MN train #853 & #863 will be reinstated and MN trains #853 is one hell of a hotshot because it only stops in Beacon, New Hamburg, & Poughkeepsie Skips all stops including 125th street highly reccomend.
Considering that the East usually loses out to the West when it comes to railroad scenery, I've always said that the ride up the Hudson to Albany is the most scenic Amtrak ride in the East, and that obviously goes for Metro-North as well. It would seem that limited passenger service on that Beacon to Danbury line would be a good idea. Thanks for the bonus coverage of Poughkeepsie.
. BF operated that train a few times in the past. Quite a enjoyable ride for the engineer too. May I suggest doing 943 or 953 next time? Those two are the longest distance thru trains from GCT. Clocking in at 82 miles.
I think eventually we may get a thru train to Waterbury again now that sidings have been added to the branch and signals. Cdot plans to add service. If they do that, that'll be the longest thru run
This was nice! I've never been on Metro-North before, but I watch videos of it all the time. This train looks fun to ride, and the fact that it stops at Harlem then skips all the way to Beacon reminds me of the Cannonball on the LIRR. The Hudson Line is also one of my favorite Rail Lines in the USA. I'm supposed take an Amtrak trip up to Rochester soon, and I'm excited to finally see the Hudson Line in person! I also like that you talked with that engineer at the end. He seemed very friendly. Anyways, I enjoy your videos, and have a nice day.

Correct, the Beacon Line passed overhead just before CP58, where it connects to the Hudson Line. It was formerly the “Beacon Secondary” that connected the Maybrook Line to the Hudson Line at Hopewell Junction. After the Poughkeepsie Bridge burned, both eastern part of the Maybrook Line and the Beacon Secondary eventually became the “Beacon Line.” It is out of service, still owned by Metro North (MNR). MNR gave freight trackage rights to the Housatonic Rail Road, which does not use it. The line has yet to be sold.
