It turns out that OpenRCT2 has a bug and that the drop height stat requirement is actually 4 meters (13 feet) in RCT2 and RCT Classic.
I forgot to say this in the video, but a download for the two log flume designs can be found in the description.
Alrighty!👍
Thanks! Are there any ways to get better stats? Adding scenery, intersection with coasters or simething like this?
Hey! Can you tell what music you used in background of your videos?
Go over why boats get lost in lakes without track.
@@joshmvines Yes!
I don't know why but the design of the log flume (especially the shimmering gentle drop pieces) has always triggered my nostalgia more than any other ride design. It's just so iconically RCT.
I agree. This may be because it's the first water ride you encounter in a scenario as there's one in Diamond Heights (first shot of the video).
Me too. It reminds me of the old log flume at Cedar Point I always used to ride.
The water in RCT is very ASMR
It also just looks very nice - the blue water, the brown logs, it’s peaceful atmosphere. It’s just nice
That and the river rapids definitely
You make me have nostalgia for the days that I'd play RCT2 with my dad.
It's a shame that log flumes in real life seem to be falling out of favor for the less interesting (IMHO) splash boat type designs with only one hill. Some of the good ones still out there actually can give you some airtime.
Yaass! Log flumes were a great mix between the splash boat and a white water rapids ride. Kings Dominion had a great 3 hill flume I think
Kennywood removed their Log Flume but kept the goddamn rapid rides that people only ever ride because it can occasionally get you wet, even though it's right next to one of those splash boats literally set up to always get people standing in specific areas wet.
Still mad.
@@TheShinyFeraligatr At least Waldameer has a really good one
@@DoritoTime Probably my favorite (and closest). I'm also partial to the ones at Hersheypark and Knoebels.
The Swedish theme park liseberg has a really nice log flume called "Flume ride", it also has a nice river rapids ride called "Colorado".
Edit: Not that long ago, read that they where planning on scrapping the current flume ride and building a new one, allot due to the ride being around 50 years old. Might not be that much time left for that ride, this upcoming summer might be the last season it's operated before being scrapped (they weren't sure when the new ride will be built).
I actually never knew the boat wouldn’t turn if it was going too fast.
I did
Damn, you put this up on the day I visit an old amusement park that just got rid of their Log Flume in the last 5 years.
6:31 I'm glad you went over this. I've seen people argue that the exit building is what determines how fast people can board and leave rides.
"Everyone's favorite water ride, the log flume!"
Me: *cries in river rapids*
It's nice to hear Marcel speak so positively about a ride that--by its nature--is so limiting. I can appreciate his love for its aesthetics.
The lack of a Steep Drop kinda disappointed me since Log Flumes IRL had them at the time (Thunder River which was built in 1995 has 2 Steep Drops)
Also You Uploaded right when i was listening to a Chat about the aforementioned Log Flume
@5:15 not always... i spend a lot of time to make the release interval such that at full capacity a boat leaves just as one enters the station, it only has a row of waiting boats when it is not running
The gentle music theme fits the log flume so much better than the water theme.
This is the best video I saw today, good work buddy :)
Another thing about the logflume / splash boats is how if you do massive drops followed immediately by another climb the momentum of the drop carries the boat almost half the way back up before it slows down to the normal crawl speed. So a tall multi-dipper can cut down quite a lot on the ride time by "skipping" half of the climbs.
I was struggling with making money in a scenario park and was adding one of each ride type as I got the funds so that I could attract a wider variety of guests. I eventually got to a point where I added a (prebuilt) log flume and left it at the default $2 charge. It is one of my most popular rides and I wish I had known about it earlier. As for the settings, for aesthetic purposes, I put a 4 second minimum wait time to keep the “logs” from piling up and a 7 second max wait time for when it rains and guests stop entering the queue (to get as many guests off the ride as fast as possible so they can go buy umbrellas). Thinking on it, I might drop that 7 down to a 5 next time I hop on
I love using the log flug as a much more pricy transport, on maps where there is a down hill or sort, I put one station up with the entrance, the other down only with exit, I will get a LOT of vehicles and this way, make guests go from place to place on a much more money making way then a transport
cool to instantly recognise the "Flash Back" log flume ride from walibi/six flags belgium at 2:40 . my favourite ride as a kid
Lekker bezig Marcel. Ik kijk elke video. Ga zo door!
I always liked the log flume. It would always attract a bunch of attention, and made you good money.
Always happy to see another ride overview video!
The boats re-entering the station backwards is a neat gimmick, I could totally see a park doing that irl as a way to make it more fun on repeated rides. Might be some safety concerns to work out, though.
Main issue would probably be the added mechanical complexity of the turntable needing more maintenance
Turntables are definitely a thing in real life. The one in Walibi Holland has two of them.
RCT3 also has the crocodile boats (but it has in-line seating), has access to steep drops, and will crash if it hits the reverser turntable too fast (I don't remember the minimum crash speed off the top of my head)
I like the concept of willingness to ride something
For some reason I've been wanting a Splash Boats ride overview for quite some time
The crazy things following this channel does to you
In order to make a good looking River Rapids you have to put in a lot of work into the terrain and/or scenery. Otherwise it looks very lucky and boxy, so this means that most of the time you're best bet is cutting a channel of sorts for it to sit in (basically lower the land that the rapids will sit in by one tile so that the rafts are level with the terrain). These things take time to make, but are visually pleasing in the end. The Splash Boats are more for short experiences like how they're typically seen IRL from a looks standpoint, unless you want to do a longer layout.
Of the three the Log Flume is the easiest to build while keeping it looking good, it requires the least effort (outside of a super genaric splash boats) and isn't easy to screw up. The Rapids require a LOT of extra work as does a bigger Splash Boats.
Ahh yes I remember the gators.
My first time using them I made a log flume with a series of toilets above it, I called it Sewer Gators...
Does the temperature of the game affect the popularity of the log flume? Or other rides for that matter? Maybe a whole video in itself, even if the answer is no
That would be cool if it did since It works like that IRL
Yeah agree
I think the only weather influence is rain. As with all open air attractions, guests will not ride if it rains. Just my guess, since I don't know the temperature influences on stuff other than food and drink stalls.
I'm pretty sure guests prefer water rides in hot climates like Dynamite Dunes
It sure does.
Log Flume in Forrest Frontiers is normal.
Log Flume in Dynamite Dunes challenges even the coasters in terms of popularity and how much you can ask.
So basically.
Always keep in mind what time of the year it is.
In Spring: Build more water type of attractions.
In Autumn: Don't build water type attractions
Now that you've mentioned the River Rafts & River Rapids, you now have to review them, especially the former. X3
I always thought the Log Flume was not such a good ride... I stand corrected! The only thing is that the chain lifts take for ever...
You can cheat a bit on the lifts. If you're playing OpenRCT2, enable "Allow chain lifts on any piece" in the Cheats menu and the Log Flume hills will now go at 8kph.
I worried that the log flume boats could crash into each other so I always built them in such a way they couldn't, but now I know they can't so I'll go insane with the amount of boats I can have.
I always assumed the Log Flume's popularity also depended on the weather / temperature. At least it was my impression for the desert parks.
Still wanting that twister coaster overview! 😃
There is so much going on with it.
I'm sold, crocodile boats ftw
Always my main source of income, photos help to achieve it.
the chad log flume vs. the virgin river rapids
Can't believe I didn't know about the crocodile boats
Fantastic video. Will try to build one in my park.
...Given how much of the bigger log flume design is station, surely it'd be better to replace one of the station sections with a reverser turntable for higher stats?
Because guests are usually no better than mindless sheep, I've taken to naming my Log Flumes "Wood for Sheep".
I remember a log flume crashed on me because they were reversing right after a hill.
These things can look really good if you use them correctly
are we getting steep pieces and animation frames for steep log movement? Openrct2 gave us turbo on many tracks, so.
I wonder how it would work to put an entrance at the top and an exit at the bottom so that the guests don't have to wait on the lift.
is those maximum ride/peoples/park size stuff still dev only or they made it to normal version?
I already love Splash Boats more :) :)
I have played rct for nearly 20 years, I know the game in and out and I know pretty much everything about log flumes and yet I will still watch the entirely video just cause marcel is an awesome creator
I remember making fun of my sister for building that first optimized log flume. whelp
Log flume is awesome
Oh my God... I don't think I've ever noticed the turntable pieces! Were they part of an add-on, or something?
They were a ride improvement in RCT1... I think Corkscrew Follies (or Added Attractions) introduced them.
@@stylesrj Ahh, interesting! I'll look for them next time I'm playing RCT. Thanks!
Does the in-game temperature affect what kind of rides guests will ride?
Log flume is one of my least favorite ride to build since I was always confused what would be a good design for it. Speaking of water rides I'd be interested to hear how weather and climate affects the quests.
how many guests does the log flume attract to the park?
For some reason all water rides use the same annoying scream when guests drop on it. This wasn't the case in RCT1.
Can you do a video on shops/stalls?
4:56 terrifying, but good to know the next time I am on a log flume in real life
Bit disappointed you didn't mention the fact that empty boats move faster uphill than full boats, and the uphill traffic jams it causes.
Isn't it the opposite though? I reckon full loaded boats moving faster uphill (after a downhill) and 'crashing' on an empty boat that stabilized it's speed earlier.
@@pbnetto Fuller boats get pulled uphill slower because they're heavier.
@@pbnetto hes refefing to the chain pulling them up. Not the inertia pushing them up.
@@robertharris6092 oh thats makes sense then
I had no idea log flumes were filled with glue haha - that part with the log rocketing through the bumps had me laughing so hard
Works in planet coaster too, remove friction to create a high speed log flume rollercoaster.
I also chuckled at the log flume crash shown where the boat didn't explode, but everyone totally just broke every single bone in their body
@@digitaldeathsquid3448 BONK
I can hear it so well
FFFWHOOoooOOOoooOOOSSSHH
@@digitaldeathsquid3448 They forgot to fill the log flume cars with nitroglycerin, must've used it all up on the mini golf course
I haven’t played RCT2 for many, many years and only casually, even then. I still enjoy listening to you talk about it. It is very calming and relaxing youtube content. I appreciate that you have such an in-depth knowledge of the games working and programming. The same cannot be said for most other gaming channels. They play and enjoy the various games, but they haven’t taken the time to evaluate how the very code works and the way the game thinks. It’s an interesting and different take on playing a game.
I totally agree. I love the way Marcel gives an in-depth analysis of the workings of the game. I wanted to program games when I was younger, so figuring out how a game works/"thinks" has always excited me. His approach is very unique in that manner (I know one other guy who did this for Morrowind and that's it). These videos made me reinstall RCT/2 just to approach it with this new knowledge.
Also, I love your profile picture. My current baby is a Himalayan too.
4:55 Had no idea log flume trains wouldn't explode on collision! Neat
Log Flume 1 has crashed!
It must not be floating on gasoline
I mean, how does a piece of wood on water explode
@@wacesferpit ask mini golf how people explode!
@@MirrorHall_Clay Michael bay was making a movie and the mini-golf was
part of the script.
the great thing about log flume cars not exploding on impact is that it's true to life. i've never been in a log flume ride where the cars didn't collide at some point. that's part of the ride.
my logflumes always had the ridiculous longest queues
Same here. I usually ale the lines shorter to keep people from getting mad waiting too long
Make*
Pre RCT2 I’m pretty sure the car number was limited by station size, causing long lines and low throughput
Put entrance in first tile of station and put minimum waiting time in 1 or 0, like Marcel explain in this video
Just add some TVs they never get bored and never remeber to become mad XD
You can delete one station tile on your large design and add a photo section for more money. ;)
I like the fact you can have separate one tile entrance and exit stations for the log flume and still have a huge number of boats. I put the entrance station on top of a tall mountain and then have an intricate design going downhill. The peeps get off at the bottom and the boats go back up top empty. It's expensive but quite aesthetically pleasing. :D
That's how I set up a steeplechase ride one day, inspired by toboggan/sled ride videos I randomly got suggested on YT. I think that's the most exciting way to use that ride.
Rides like the Log Flume - that give you choices - are the best
Imagine riding this in real life and it goes over a hill at 100km/hr
I just love adding photo sections to this ride because then people complement me on the cheapness of it.
And with the high throughput you can make a lot of money from it.
The on-ride photo from Log Flume 1 is really good value.
I think the log flume became about 100 times more useful in RCT2 over RCT1 solely due to the increase in the number of boats.
I also never knew about the speed limit! I feel like the reverser coaster needs something similar to this.
I feel like it was also slower in RCT1. I could be wrong.
@@electrollama2127 I never noticed this but you're absolutely right! 3km/h in RCT1, and a whopping 4km/h in RCT2!
well, the reverser is like weird, any speed backwards (in terms of track because it failed to reach the top of a hill), make it crash (If I remember)
My local theme park removed our log flume and we all miss it. Damn you Six Flags.
Aside from coasters, log flumes were my favorite rides to build. I once built a massive log flume with multiple tall drops and it went all over my park.
well well well how the turn tables
4:45 love that timing haha
I always start with the drop and then the climb. This makes the climb much shorter because of the speed you make with the drop. And you are still able to merge the waiting path on top.
This is definitely more efficient for speed but usually more expensive, surely? And there's no improvement in throughput because that's limited by how quickly people can get in the boat.
I do love doing that with the spiral coaster though. A small spiral coaster that basically just goes down then up again is even more overpowered than usual spiral coasters as it needs few or no spiral lift pieces. I built one that costs under $2,300 with the right placement and meets all stat requirements, for a 4.8/3.4/1.7 stat set - good for a $12.60 price at the start in RCT Classic (which I play), meaning it pays for itself in under 200 rides! And it has room for a photo section for even more money!
@@shinydavidhowell it is very functional on a mountain, saves a lot of money
I loooove the Log Flume. Looks great, has good stats and it's always popular. It looks so good in hilly terrain
The Log Flume is garbage in RCT1 because the number of boats depend on station length instead of track length like they do in RCT2. Any log flume that has a decently long ride time in RCT1 is going to have terrible throughput and will cause guests to get angry in the queue line. You should mention that.
The first thing I do when playing RCT1 scenario like Diamond Heights or Aqua Park is delete the log flume because it lowers the park rating so much.
Couldn't you just add an entertainer to the que line?
Neither of the flumes in Aqua Park (White Water Park in the international release) are long enough to make guests complain. It's still a ride worth using in RCT1 if you keep its ride duration down.
I sometimes click on your videos thinking "well, I know everything about this ride, but he has such an appeaising voice, I'm gonna watch it anyway". And I always learn something new.
Keep up the good wok, gretings from France !
It's one of my favorite rides to build in the game, no park is complete until it has one. My absolute fav thing to do though is make a drop that goes underground! It gives the ride a very high excitement rating
Just install two stations to prevent gets from getting stuck in the ride, keep build tracks before the first stage to act as storage for the logs.
That's a good idea. Also, I think the average speed can be raised if the exit station is positioned some meters below the entrance station, with the second one starting directly with a drop than with the following climbs starting right next to every downhill. This way you can restrict the deceleration to uphills only and making the logs spend less time on climbs.
@@pbnetto If it's true that empty logs take lift-hills faster than logs with guests, then the best design for throughput would be a design with an exit station before a lift-hill, and an entrance at the top? Building the queue-line would be silly, though.
@@user-ec8cg1nx8x yes, that's what I'm thinking. You could put this model well on a hilly terrain, using the natural slope to build the lift-hill.
I like to put the exit on a separate station than the entrance so people will never get stuck on it and it can dispatch faster.
Two additional details:
you can set them to accept half-loads to get the first guests through the ride faster.
And you should always set the cars to leave after a short time no matter the load, so guests trapped at the back can get off the ride even when no one else is riding it.
I was worried Marcel was going to roast about my favorite custom ride maker since I have fears of crashes.
So can you just have a track that's only reversers and turns? I'd call that Upchuck Woodchuck
looks like the log Flume is probably one of the easiest rides to desgin.
It's almost as easy to design as the Go Karts.
I love it, but the only thing I want is steep drops, I witch they could add it
If you have OpenRCT2 you can do that by adding in Splash Boats track.
@@Nitron2097 The animation looks weird though
*Heads up for people watching this video now:* In OpenRCT2, steep downward slopes were recently added to the Log Flume. You can get them by enabling the 'Enable all drawable track pieces' cheat. However, as of writing this, the vehicle sprites for steep drops are still missing, so it looks a little odd.
Hold up, with the turning table only working at certain speeds, does that mean it may be possible to make a log flume where the boats return to the station either forwards or backwards depending on the weight of their riders?
Sounds like something to try out :D
Any chance of a video on breakdowns? The chance of a breakdown vs the ride age, the different types and what they mean as well as how it's all calculated. Your videos are great!
Even though they are slower I always build one because they are popular and I like to theme them. Plus I loved all the flumes that Arrow built.
Something people need to keep in mind with the Log Flume is that you can very easily accidentally create a ride that takes so long to get back to the station that guests get bored, especially when you're doing those aesthetic meandering ones.
You forgot to mention how good the ride is at absorbing guests into it's queue line even if it doesn't help with throughput, since that may be useful in certain situations.
7:16 I have never built a log flume like that before, but that was so funny, that I am definitely doing it the next time I play.
protip: instead of building a long station build one station piece on the ground with an exit and then make the hightest possible hill and put the exit on top
not having to climb the hill gives extra excitement because the actual ride portion has less % at slow speed and it helps with the througput as well
Can you do a ride overview for the wooden wild mouse? I just noticed it has no brakes, it might be unique in having only the station as special element. It seems a hassle to build with, but they can look quite nice.
Interesting - I found a "prototypical" log flume, with two or three big drops and some slow moving in between - wasn't really viable in RCT. The queues are wayyyyyyyy too long.
Did the number of boats calculated by track length thing only come in during RCT2? Even on OpenRCT2 the Snake River Falls ride on Diamond Heights only has enough boats to fill the station
I think it's because the scenario was originally made that way for RCT1. If you look at the ride window for Snake River Falls you should be able to increase the number of boats yourself. That's what I did in RCT Classic, at least.
Incapable of exploding due to a _train_ _on_ _train_ _collision_
. . . What if a vandal is involved?
Poor Splash Boats and River Rapids getting fat shamed.
Screw go karts. The log flume is way boverpowered
Thing is, the number of boats being dependent on the length of the track is actually something introduced in RCT2.
In RCT1, it was station-length and up to 12 boats.
It could also get the station brakes failure breakdown in RCT1.
@@reillywalker195
Yeah but it did nothing. Even when I tried designing it so the boats would slam into each other at high speed at the station platform...
Been waiting for this ride description for a while now. Thanks for getting around to it. I remember playing RCT as a kid and trying out a really basic log flume. Ended up being amazed by how many guest would want to ride and not really understanding why.
I tend to build the carnival portable design with two drops, for 2400€, and its also a moneymaker ;)
I love that you are still playing this game.
Check out this video with the captions on. Da's pas grappig.
Hey man, I really like these RCT videos of yours. I just wanted to confess that for this video I shortly made fun of your voice/pronouncing. I’m sorry. You’re a cool guy!
Funny ride. It seems like they gave it the advantages of a (basic) roller coaster, but without the dangers. You really can't go wrong with it!
