How to Use a Rice Cooker / Steamer

  • A rice cooker / steamer is wonderful for those that eat a lot of rice! Cooking rice the traditional way in a pot is much more exacting, and you need to spend a lot of time stirring so that you don't burn the pot. A rice cooker is sooo much more easier. You literally put in the rice and water, and then you just leave it and forget it - the pot will cook up perfect rice each time! You can make different types of rice in a rice cooker - whether it be white, rice, or other varieties. You can also steam vegetables and other things as well. A rice cooker is versatile for many things.
In this particular video, I will show you how to use a rice cooker for making brown rice. You can also check your rice cooker's directions for more specific instructions.
    UPDATE:
Since several people have asked - the rice cooker I have is an Aroma model ARC-1010SB
    UPDATE:
Many people seem to be confused by the water/rice proportions. It's NOT a true ratio. Whatever the amount of rice you are putting in, you want to put in the SAME amount of water, plus 1/2 cup.
1 cup of rice = 1 cup of water, plus 1/2 cup water = 1-1/2 cups of water
2 cups of rice = 2 cups of water, plus 1/2 cup water = 2-1/2 cups of water
3 cups of rice = 3 cups of water, plus 1/2 cup water = 3-1/2 cups of water
4 cups of rice = 4 cups of water, plus 1/2 cup water = 4-1/2 cups of water
    and so forth
These are the instructions straight from the book for my rice cooker.
UPDATE: No, I do not wash the rice. You certainly can if you want to remove the extra starch, but I do not. It's just my preference.
UPDATE: Personal preference - I do not put any salt or seasonings in my rice when I'm cooking it, as I usually cook a large amount so I have it for several meals. When I assemble my meals, and mix the rice with meat or vegetables, that is when I add the seasonings, depending on what that particular recipe calls for.

I noticed from the comments not everyone listened to you. From what you said 3 cups of rice needs 3.5 cups of water. From your instruction 4 cups of rice would then need 4.5 cups of water. I think I understand it. It sounded clear to me. Thanks for the information.

    • @jroberts3428
      @jroberts3428 2 роки тому

So 100 cups of rice would need 100.5 cups of water and a 1/4 cup of rice would require 3/4 cups of water?
      Doesn't make sense.

I didn't think I'd learn anything, but since I'm such a noob chef I looked this up. Glad I did. Didn't realize rice/water ratio wasn't a true ratio. Thanks!

Great video thanks. 1. Wash the rice twice before cooking 2. 1.5 cups of water for 1 cup of rice so you need 4.5 cups of water because I see the rice is under cooked because of no water. 3. To know if the rice is cooked well, it should not look crispy and take few and press it with your fingers and it should crush softly. Thanks again ! I opened to see how to use the cooker 😅

Brown rice has 80% more arsenic than white, so I cook white rice, store it in an airtight container for 24hrs to type III retrograde it. And then it's no longer digestible by enzymes, so gets fibrous properties. Also I've heard for 1 cup of rice, 2 cups of water but I'm no expert with cooking it properly (why I'm here lol) good video.

WOW that's a big rice cooker. 2X the size of mine! BTW: you don't need to use the cups a cooker comes with - just so long as you maintain the right ratio of rice to water. I usually rinse my rice. I also use a rice cooker. But the way I make mine is I measure 4 cup rice rinse it clean put it in the pot. I measure my 4 cups water boil it separately then add it into the rice cooker. I add salt and light olive oil. Set it to cook. My rice cooker has a glass lid. I watch till water is absorbed and I give it quick good stir and put the lid back and finish cooking. Mine come out perfectly cooked

I would definitely want to rinse the rice before cooking it. Before it gets packed, it lies in storehouses in huge piles and the rice at the very bottom is on the concrete floor full of dust. Also it is good to pre-wash the rice as the water helps cleanse it from some starch. And I would put in a little bit of salt too. But thats me. Someone else may prefer it in a different way and I respect it.

I believe you need to wash the rice after soaking it for 10-15 mins. Then use a ratio of per cup rice to 1.5 cup water. As for rice cooker, I bought so many before and found Tefal Rice Cooker Steam IH 1.8L Plus GWP Tefal Duo Pan to be the best. Cleans easily, doesn’t leave smell and you do not get crust at the bottom of the pot like other rice cooker does. This one come off clean all the time.

Nice simple video-thkx! (P.S. : check your math, 1c rice/1.5c water... 3c rice x 1.5 water = 4.5c water). We make rice every day on the stove top: rice + water 1 knuckle above the rice. I like how the rice cooker would free up my pot for other cooking tasks instead of taking the rice out, cleaning the pot, putting it back in to reheat.
what brand cooker are you using????

The water ratio that I used in this video I find makes my brown rice perfect - not too dry and not too wet. There is no excess water, and the rice fluffs up nicely. Everyone will have slightly different preference, so you may need to experiment with the water ratio to get it to your liking. It will also depend on what time of rice you use as well. I really only cook with brown rice.

Whatever the amount of rice that you use, do the same for the water and just add an extra 1/2 cup. For ex, if you do 1 cup of rice, you use 1.5 cup of water. If you do 2 cups of rice, you do 2.5 cups of water, 3 cups of rice, do 3.5 cups of water, etc. You're not doubling the water amount even if you do more rice, all you're doing is adding 1/2 cup of water.

I own the same exact model rice cooker but every time my roommate or I use it to make rice it comes out bad. The top layer/center of the rice is mushy/watery and the sides and bottom are crusty, solid, and hard. I've tried brown rice and white rice with different measurements of both water and rice. I have also tried rinsing the rice and different brands of rice. The only one time it finished cooking right was when I checked the rice while it was cooking and stirred more water in it every ten minutes(I almost burned myself doing this). Only for it to come out bad a few hours after leaving it alone when it finished cooking.

The times will vary slightly depending on what type of rice you are doing. I only cook with brown rice so those are the times that I have. But if you look in the instructions that came with your rice cooker, they should have a little cheat sheet that gives you times for different rices. If they don't list the specific one that you are using, you may have to experiment a little before you find out what works best for that rice.

Kuntry, I don't know what the times are, as easy cooker is a little different, but it should be automatic. The cooker will tell you when it's done. You can try timing it from when you turn it on to when it beeps at you, so you know the length of time. And YES, for 4 cups of rice, you want 4-1/2 cups of water!

I looked on Amazon as well as Bed Bath and Beyond to get an idea of prices and what models are available. Also depends on what kind of rice you cook or what features you like. I personally cook a lot of brown rice, so I wanted more than a basic model that would have different settings for different types of rice, rather than just an off and on switch. Also depends on how many people you cook for, so how many cups of rice you want to make at a time.

You need to wash your rice before to get some of the starch out and I guarantee it will taste better and I don't think you made it clear enough judging by the comments but the ratio is 1.5cups of water per 1cup of rice. So if you use 4 cups of rice for example you will need 6 cups of water. Also you can try adding peas or sweet corn or frozen veg mix like the small diced carrots and peas one to the rice to change it up. I'm indian and we make rice with peas cumin seeds and fried onions in it all the time it is most traditional that way. Give it a go trust me you will love it. Oh and add a touch of salt if you like otherwise it tastes bland.

Navstra, Yes, there is quite a bit of confusion with the water/rice ratio because everyone wants to double it up. Whatever the rice you add, you have to do the same amount of water, plus add 1/2cup. So if you are going to do 4 cups of rice, you will need 4-1/2 cups of water, not 6 cups. Love the idea of adding vegetables to the rice, I will have to try that! I'll try using chicken broth instead of water, it would add more flavoring to the veges. Thanx for the suggestion!

rice cookers are absolutely incredible. i sold my microwave. it's actually easier and cheaper to throw fresh ingredients in a rice cooker than nuking a tv dinner

Yeah but I think it's so you don't make it overflow. Mine says it cooks 2-8 cups but if I added enough rice for 8 US cups it would make a huge mess...

My rice cooker has 2 settings - white rice and brown rice. For the video, I was using the brown rice setting, as well as the water ratio for brown rice that was listed on the chart that came with my rice cooker. If you have other varieties of rice, you will just have to experiment to see what times and water ratios work for you.

I always wash rice in a bowl 2x before transferring into a rice cooker. For 3 measuring cup of jasmines rice, I add 3 1/2 cup of water + 1 tsp of coconut oil. Easy! 😊

My Aroma cooker instructions say ratio is 1-rice and 2-water. So with three cups rice in video that should be 6 cups (the Aroma cup included with cooker) of water. I'm going to try it with 1-to-1.5 for 1 cup of rice to see what happens. Don't forget to read the instruction book that comes with the cooker. Tip = if you steam some veggies (carrots or Brussels sprouts...) at the same time the rice won't "foam" out the vent. I just leave the veggies in the steamer in the unit for the full rice-cook time. Somewhat mushy veggies but ok anyway.

I buy precooked rice and 3cups takes only about 12min to make if using a microwave/stove, would it be 12min in a Rice Cooker as well?

This particular rice cooker boils the rice, it will have to go into the big container with water. It does have a steam basket that fits on top, but that is only for meat and vegetables.
