    You nailed that final comment. Kanami writes for the benefit of the song, not for the individual. Even her own solos aren't wild tangents just to show off her ability, but stay within the context of the melody. The more you listen, the more you hear the underlying rhythms separate from the main melody. They enhance the song, but don't overpower it. For example, Misa bass playing is anything but standard, but she never controls the melody. There are so many levels to each song that you're never bored. Can't wait to see them in concert!

    Black Hole - Their fastest and most frantic song to date. The double feature Manners / Black Hole Live provides a great contrast in styles.
    Giovanni - Band-Maid doing prog!

    I always see mention of Misa's trick of tucking her pick into her index finger (and rightfully so!) when she switches to bass-slapping, but I think it is just as remarkable that Kanami uses her middle finger for fret tapping all while still holding her pick with her thumb and index finger for switching styles as well, very impressive!

    • @PrymalChaos
      @PrymalChaos  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah. After you learn how to tap, the the next thing you need to figure out is how to adapt that to playing live. Some people put the pick in their mouth, but then you can't do that quick enough, so that only really leaves the old middle finger! 😁

    Coming back to you, mate!
    I am probably (definitely) repeating comments that will surely come to you soon!
    This particular video is actually old by their standards. Miku, the rhythm guitarist had started learning the guitar from scratch only 5 years before that particular concert! Truth be told, she had been practicing every day for 8 hours (with rare breaks when promoting the band) under the teaching of Kanami. She actually confessed she hated the whole experience at first but kept doggedly at it. What else can we say?
    Akane, the drummer, for all her goofing is a very well balanced lady who plays only what is right, and you do really have to bully her into playing long solos. She can also play the piano and trombone! Her music school mate, Misa, like her, had a jazz education on top of a classical one. But her technique of tucking her pick inside her index before slapping her bass is so quick that I very much doubt anyone in a rock band can equal her!
    Ever quiet and assuming Kanami has a classical education dating back to the age of 4 and composes everything on the piano first and confessed she sometimes has problems with learning how to play her own compositions on the guitar later!
    But what I have just said will be repeated until the world ends. Now, I must compliment you (sorry for the paternalistic attitude of mine!) on the fact you pointed out that they brought a new way of thinking on a basically western style of music. Mind you, if you listen to some famous Japanese jazz players, you will quickly understand that music will always progress and evolve with contributions from other cultures. No one has the ownership of any music the moment you start sharing it! After all, many westerners come to Japan to learn traditional Japanese music!
    Blimey, that was another rant! I sincerely apologize!
    On a different note, could you check this video:
    ua-cam.com/video/3q9FNU7lw2M/v-deo.html
    Asterism live in Los Angeles when heir female guitarist Hal Cal (Haruka) was only 17! Also features a 7-sring bass!
    Do not tell me I am having you work overtime! LOL
    Take good care of yourself (ves)!
    Best regards,
    Robert-Gilles

    damn! I was looking forward to your "onset" reaction, but I was late because of my work! However, I am always surprised at your analysis. Even though you've heard it for the first time, you can express it properly. But I have to heard a few times. I also play the guitar, so the complexity is always harder than I thought I would try a guitar cover. The lead guitar Kanami is a composer, arranger and producer. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that Band-Maid is a Kanami band. However, I think this band is made possible because there are excellent members who can handle the complicated structure. I hope you can dig deeper into this band. If possible, my favorite song "Blooming".

    Great reaction, and you nailed it with your description of what they do. Their brilliant songwriting (which a person really doesn't understand until they've heard 20 or more of their songs) is all (mostly) down to that mild mannered genius lead guitarist, Kanami Tono. She can afford to squeeze a ton of ideas into one song, because coming up with new ones is like breathing for her - seemingly anyway. She's a flat out genius of composition and arranging. Their recent stuff can be about three times as dense as this, and while sacrificing a a bit of the accessibility factor, shows that they just continue to work their tails off and get better and better. They're awesome. Cheers!

Their song "Gion-cho" by BAND-MAIKO (their alter ego band) really brings both of those aspects to the forefront and is highly recommended. It is a song that would probably never be written by five guys or five non-Japanese people.

Their playfulness and unconventional jumps in the rhythm are a bit reminiscent of what Rush does/did. I find it as a good thing and very attractive to my ears.
    Whatever you do, check out the Unfair Game. That song does not get enough attention. Misa plays a lot of notes off beat against Akane's drums. Kanami's solos are incredible, as usual. I'm in my mid- 70's and have been following rock since the mid to late 1950"s and Onset is the finest instrumental I have heard in almost 60 years. Kanami is a savant in her songwriting, with her complex and perfect rythms and layering that are just.............I have no words to describe it !!! Miku is an excellent lyricist and has the prescience to add in English in almost every song, which she said was a way to get the rest of the world interested in their work. Their musicianship is just fantastic, Kanami, Akane and Misa are at the top of the heap in their respective areas and Miku has evolved into a very good guitarist after not knowing how to play the guitar when the group was formed. Akane's work as being basically the musical director of the group does a fantastic job along with Misa in laying down the main beats and providing the proper base for each song. I think they are the most perfectly tuned-in group out there today. They never disappoint and I can't wait for their show in NYC on October 28th, 2022, it will be amazing.

Someone mentioned it being a certain playing style she learned at the Tokyo School of Music. Unfortunately I can't remember what that style is called so maybe you can help out. I agree with this and it goes beyond rock music. You could probably argue (easily) that Japan has the most vibrant music industry and community in the world today. Not by accident-there is solid arts and music education and many bands get their start as early as high school (Asterism members met at a music event for youth at an even younger age, IIRC, Kanami picked up guitar in high school, Misa and Akane when to music school, etc. etc).

    The epihany I had about Band-Maid today is that the band is completely composed of prodigy-level artists. Lots of bands have pieces of that; A great Bass player here, a fantastic drummer there. Some have a kick-ass singer. But the rare combination of having that whole group be at that level makes it just amazing to listen to. An example that comes to mind that is NOT Band-Maid is the Nine Inch Nails touring band that Trent Reznor put together in 2006 for the With Teeth tour. All of the musicians are high level, but the drummer is over the top genius level and mixed with the perfection that Reznor demands, it makes the live concerts something amazing to listen to, even on the bootleg recordings. Band-Maid has that same level of competence. They are all REALLY good, and they like what they do. As I listen to them more, I realize that Misa is actually a gifted Prog Rock bassist. I hear the STRONG influence of Yes in her playing (specifically, Close To The Edge era styles). I'm not an expert on music or anything. I'm a data geek/car mechanic (yeah, I know, weird combo), but I LOVE music, and I could not live without it, and hearing Band-Maid for the first time was as transformative as hearing Oingo Boingo for the first time (which changed my life).

    Yes, they are talented and each of them could effortlessly fill the 4 minutes on their own, but for them, it's always about the overall result of the song. And I think your explanation fits it pretty well. I have described this song several times now as a 'cultivated conversation' among musicians, where I, as a non-musician, don't get bored listening even after hearing it several times, because I keep hearing something new. 4 talented musicians who use their instruments to express themselves.

    "Band-Maid prism" That's a good way to put it! Their sound is very thick and layered, but still easily accessible and enjoyable on the outside.
    There's a lot of ways you can go next, but I think you might want to consider listening to something from their newer album (Unseen World) and singles, something maybe a bit more modern and progressive sounding. I say sounding because Kanami always finds a way to make any song catchy, no matter how heavy or weird.
    Some ideas would be: Sense, Black Hole (live with Manners, a 2 song video, showing past and future BM sounds), Giovanni, H-G-K (not videos, just on the playlist). Corallium and Hibana are also good from the Sense single, but not videos.
    Looking forward to what's next!

    Kanami is featured on this one and she is the composer of all the music for the group. Miku is great on rhythm and it is amazing to think that she didn't know how to play guitar until she started this group, but with Kanami as her sensei (teacher) you can tell she is putting in the time. One interesting thing, once Kanami composes the tune she send demo's to Misa (bass) and Akane (drums) so they can add their parts. Typically an instrumental break in a show like this is for Saiki to get a break from all the out of this world vocals she does. Great music!

    It's kind of a fan cliche, but really every Band-Maid song takes multiple listens to appreciate: one overall, then one apiece focused on each instrument, lead vocals, and backing vocals. Even after you wrap your head around the elements, there's still more depth in the composition, arrangement, how they play off of one another, and the lyrics. That was a really good assessment in the middle of how they're not so much re-inventing the wheel as building on and pulling together classic forms to create something fresh but somehow familiar. Jack at the Jbf Music & Guitar reaction channel has pointed out that there are even industrial and dance-y elements that aren't obvious because one doesn't expect them from a guitar-based rock band.

    If you watch some of the last tour of USA fan cams you see Kanami guitar tech tapping a pedal when Kanami is playing. She is tapping the tempo to the song on the delay pedal for her. This happens on big bands but you won't see it. K uses her delay pedal alot so different songs have different tempos so she would be adjusting here delay time constantly. So her tech does it for her.

    Akane, MISA, and Kanami could easily be an instrumental trio side project if they wanted. Miku has come a long way from pretending to play guitar or playing single notes here and there to becoming the solid rhythm guitarist she is now. I love the contrast in tones between between her and Kanami.

    • @PrymalChaos
      @PrymalChaos  2 роки тому +1

      Miku's actually a great rhythm player. I wasn't aware of her story. So she wasn't originally a live player? That's pretty cool. It's a bit like the current singer from Gacharic Spin was originally just a dancer/performer and now she is a killer front person.

    • @PaleHorseShabuShabu
      @PaleHorseShabuShabu 2 роки тому

      @@PrymalChaos Miku has an interesting and unique origin. Her hometown is Kunomoto, Japan, where she worked in her first maid cafe. She then moved to Tokyo where she worked at another maid cafe called @home cafe. She won a "super idol audition" - I don't know who held it - and quit working at the cafe. She joined a three-piece idol group called Lil Cumin, but that lasted only a year because they weren't catching on and Miku wasn't feeling the straight pop of the group. She went to management and said she wanted a rock band, but she wanted to keep the maid look that Lil Cumin used during the end of their existence.
      They gave her the green light, so Miku found Kanami on UA-cam. Kanami was writing, playing, and singing her own songs, though I've never seen them and don't know if those videos still exist. Kanami had worked with Akane, and Akane went to music school with MISA. The four decided to hold auditions for a singer because Miku had decided that her voice wasn't strong enough for rock. That's when they found Saiki. The maid concept was hoisted on Saiki at the last moment, and she's always refused to wear an apron.
      Miku had never picked up a guitar before, so Kanami started teaching her. In their first music video, "Thrill," Miku is holding a RIckenbacker guitar that she bought because she thought it was pretty. She never actually plays the guitar, just kind of looks cute around it. I've seen some early festival footage where she barely plays it or has her back to the crowd while looking like she's playing it. With her work ethic, though, and Kanami's teaching, she's evolved into the Zemaitis-playing pigeon she is now. She has always taken the lead in their interviews, and she's the band's primary lyricist.
      I don't know what Miku's real name is. Before BAND-MAID, she went by Mika Noguchi, but as far as I can tell, that's believed to be a stage name too. Here she is ten years ago when she was still Mika.

I mean, Kanami is a self-admitted nerdy girl, with a degree in economics...but, then she picks up her PRS, and becomes a guitar GOD! My opinion is that MISA has the most PERFECT bass tone. She does run a little fuzz/distortion on her sound but it is very subtle and can usually only pick up on it during the higher register notes. When she does that little run during her solo you can hear it a little bit at the beginning. She runs a few pedals but rarely messes with them during a show as opposed to Kanami who has a very elaborate pedal board and will switch around multiple times through the course of a song.
    Again, you've just broken the surface here with their sound. But you're 100% correct in that what they are doing is taking "traditional" hard rock (metal), jazz, blues, pop and throwing it in a blender and reinterpreting all of it. They have 3 or 4 different genres in one song if you listen closely and they all flow seamlessly from one into the other.
    For some of their more edgier stuff I'd suggest looking at their recent releases from Unseen World or World Domination; No God, Black Hole, Warning!, Rinne, Dice... will all be good choices I am confident you'll enjoy.
