- Nobbel explains the entire lore of Shadowlands for a viewer who has requested it. Explaining how every-single-act on the story of World of Warcraft can be traced in some way or another to the same being called Zorvaal who we need to take down in the end of this expansion and also explaining the characters that part take on the center of this story.

The greatest tragedy of modern WoW storytelling is Nobbel losing his love for the lore. :(
It's his videos that kept me playing so long. I just un-subbed tonight.
How true it is. It heart breaking.

As an old viewer, after all those years watching his videos, this one hits like a truck. It’s really sad. They really killed our passion for the game.

1. You don´t see the bigger picture either because that would require Blizzard to know the bigger picture themselves which they really do not if you actually would take the time to look at the available "bigger picture"...patch after patch after patch they retcon more of the existing lore AND the lore they themselves just wrote. So yeah nobody sees any "bigger picture" in WoW.
2. There´s still not a single sane reason for what he did. There´s a big dangerous threat coming? Then why in the fuck would you not use your influence as arbiter OR after the fall if nobody wanted to listen the Nathrezim to point at that threat? NO...instead he uses the Nathrezim to sow lies and turn Titan against Titan and Titans agains Voidlords and Voidlords against literally everyone. WHY...why would you not point at this outer threat instead if everyone is seemingly so easily to turn against something evil? 0 freaking sense in this writing.

*"LOLWUT?????"* THAT is Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands in a nutshell, I completely agree. Such a shame.
They had an opportunity with something like "Forsaken automatically go to the Maw because the current cycle of life and death automatically assumes they are irredeemable" as her motive, because even if she hates the Jailer she needs him to save her people. They even could have mixed it in with Legion saying after Genn broke the lantern thing, only then did she decide to go along with the Jailer despite him offering her the "job" at the end of WotLK and installing her as the Warchief at the start of Legion.
It'd need some decent writing, but it could have made Sylvanas conflicted character who exhausted every option to save the Forsaken before agreeing to help the Jailer. I mean, it's actually super easy to come up with that story, but they clearly went a different way of not explaining it at all. ;)

@@andrewshandle The warcraft universe often has interconnecting unresolved plots so yeah it is pretty fucking easy to come up with good storytelling that conncludes some of the many unresolved plots. They just chose not to do that with shadowlands

I still remember when Sargeras was the final villain of Warcraft and I always thought that if he ever showed up it will be in the final expansion of WoW. Curiously he is dealt in Legion and afterwards the lore has been so awful that it does seems that it all ended in Legion…
everything after legion is fanfiction. the game ended when we killed sargeras.
They messed up tbh. Even the lore in legion was dodgy tbh because of the building in draenor. Just made a lot of wrong creative decisions unfortunately

I remember how incredibly awesome it felt to learn about the Old Gods and the Burning Legion when I first encountered Nobbel's videos back in MOP while trying to understand more of the lore. It was so fucking good and enhanced my immersion in the game so much. Seeing him being so frustrated makes me sad and realize that they truly managed to fuck up everything... permanently.

I still think that somewhere around mists of pandera, the void lords got so powerful that they entered into our world, infected the blizzard staff with whispers and eventually brought activision on board, in part of their plans for domination of the world outside of the one in warcraft. They are going to use our world to hop universes and spread their corruptive influence. And this is actually why the world is going insane right now and everything is going to shit and completely chaotic and all the people who used to stand for good are actually the ones being pawns played to spread to most evil.
Really when you think about it, its the only plot that makes sense.
Wouldn't it be awesome if it was so bad that all players just refused to complete the raid? Then no more 10.0 :)
It’s really amusing listening to Nobbel , who is very calm and collected in his lore explanations usually, absolutely lose his shit over this colossal train wreck of a plot xD

You could at least ignore shadowlands. Arthas storyline was finished, the burning crusade was finished. Sure it was retconned, but eh. Who cares rly about the jailer or whatever. But man. Azhara and N'Zoth didn't deserve BFA. They had do much potential. So much story left too tell. But nope. Gotta get 1 patch where we fire our Azeroth mega beam at the last old god known for trickery and scheming. Oh well, he's dead. Here's your loot, you happy now?... Man, WoW just makes me sad now...

When the foundation of your lore/story has so many "For some reason's" in it, then you know this isn't going to end well. I feel your pain. It feels like you're trying to piece together a jigsaw puzzle and someone keeps switching out the pieces.
and when you finally piece them together you uncover something that's aggressively mediocre.

As someone who actually hasn't played Shadowlands and was confused this was unironically helpful.
Imagine building a complicated system with a single point of failure (like the Arbiter was) and the default behavior if it breaks is to have it do the dumbest thing possible, in this case just default to sending every soul to The Maw directly...something that no soul can do directly without stopping in Revendreth first when the system is functioning normally. That's like building an ATM/Bank Machine that if it has a failure it intentionally just starts spitting money out all over the place.
How is there not a "purgatory" type holding station for Souls?
Kil’jeadan, archimonde and sargeras were such good enemies…
And The lich king, wow, an amazing character, a hero turned into one of the greatest threats, I started buying books because of wotlk, started caring about lore because of arthas…
And now we have this mess…

I fell in love with h this series because there was this massive orc and ogre armada and elven steel allied with dwarven canon along with the unified tribes of Man… something something.

Seriously: Sylvanas was the lackey (I agree: Sylvanas totally "SERVED") of someone called JAILER, master of DOMINATION magic, and his other lieutenant was a MIND CONTROLLED Anduin. And Sylvanas rebelled just when she listened the world "serve".
Writing team, that was not an empowering moment: that's the proof that Sylvanas is DUMB as a brick! I bet that even the lowliest murloc or kobold would've understood that the Jailer was a bad guy, and his plan was to rule

Then in TFT I liked her. And during Wrath, after the Wrath Gate and the Battle of Undercity, I hoped that she would become something like a (very, very) dark heroine.

what i hate is that the save martha moment can still be read as batman going "omg i am killing someone son, i am the thug that would have killed me if my parents didn't jump in front of the robber", in a very poor way, it is very baddly directed and written, but you can take a reading out of it

I have held, since CATACLYSM, that Sylvanas did NOT return from ICC, but rather something else. She was clearly a different character after Wrath than before. Shadowlands could have been salvaged if we had found her in Ardenweald, and the thing wearing her skin was SABOTAGING the Jailer in secret. It is the Forsaken and the not-Sylvanas breaking the cycle of life and death causing the drought in the Shadowlands.

I mean sure, my guild has always been small, and thankfully, still have friends there, but knowing THE GAME, and not only RL stuff drove them away, makes me sad, esp. when they LOVED it through Legion & played enthusiastically till BfA (though some were OK w/ BfA but totally lost interest after trying SL).

Only now, but then this current generation is guzzling down mediocre movies and tv shows and saying they're amazing. Like avengers endgame. A solid 6/10 in as far as movies go. Its fun and stuff, its just not great. But you guys all say its the greatest of all time 11/10. When you let something average be 'great' then everything else goes to shit. Like WoW, like star wars, like game of thrones, like comic books, like games, like music lol. The story of the Shadowlands is "Drink more Ovaltine". Honestly, I'm amazed how many people have been blindsided by this, as if it hasn't been headed this way for years. It's like Blizzard has a bunch of 12 year olds writing the story.

"Jailer did it!" Jailer is a retelling of Sargeras, except Sargeras was actually based on the Jailer. *rolls eyes
Dreadlords serve the Legion, but actually serve the void, but actually serve the Jailer.
"Here's a cosmology illustration of how the universe is balanced." Except Light and Void are the strongest. But actually Life and Death are more important. And the First Ones decided that death is the bottom/foundation of all creation, so they get the keys.
Arthus was corrupted by the dreadlords, who worked for the Jailer, who had a Mourne™ blade made to control him along with the Helm of Domination. Arthus kills a fuck ton of people. Sylvanas was one of those people and was controlled by Arthus directly. A neat way for the writers to allude to abuse, I wonder where they'll take that. Fast forward 15+ years of writing, Sylvanas learns nothing and becomes the abuser, but it's ok, she's a woman and she didn't mean to and totally, actually, learned a lesson.
Tyrande becomes empowered with her god's power, to take vengeance and right the wrongs done to her people, but doesn't actually do anything.
Thank you, Nobbel, he who can explain pretty much any WoW lore, in long, detailed videos, that I'm not crazy or stupid for not understanding (and becoming apathetic) about the damn story. I hate that I can't trust their storytelling (because no one's responsible - SOMEONE BIGGER AND BADDER is controlling everything). I'm glad that I'm not the only one confused. I am dreading that they WILL take this bigger. And bigger. And each time, get farther and farther away from the things we care about.
They should rename the patch to "World of Warcraft's End"!
I love nobbel still keeping up with the lore and telling us the stories. one of if not my favorite wow content creator for so many years. Keep being awesome!
For those who genuinely want to know what was up with that part about Elune, here's what happened (based on what we have been told which could be changed at any point regardless of who tells us that info because that's the level of storytelling we're in right now):
Elune has the power to prevent night elf souls from going to the Shadowlands, their spirits instead becoming the wisps that are all over night elf areas. When the burning of Teldrassil happened, Elune chose to allow those hundreds of souls to go to the Shadowlands instead of becoming wisps. The reason for that was because Elune has a counterpart in the Shadowlands: The Winter Queen of Ardenweald, who refers to Elune as her "sister." Elune has some connection to the Winter Queen and sensed that she and Ardenweald were growing weaker due to a lack of anima, so she redirected the souls of Teldrassil to the Shadowlands in the hopes of their anima helping her out. However, at the time Elune was unaware of the Arbiter being broken and all souls automatically being sent to the Maw, but she has no power over the souls once they've entered the Shadowlands, so she could do nothing but hope that the Winter Queen could take care of whatever was going on.
Zoval could see the coming end, the true final boss.. the uninstall button.
Side note, but I love the Human Female dance. It's so goofy like a mom trying to be cool for her kids.

Never played WoW, only knew that "the story is bad, lol" from bits and pieces of complaining I've heard on the internet.
This was a great summation and gave me a lot of background, so now I feel confident in saying "Jeez, that story is fucking terrible."

Warcraft Story at the beginning was not bad at all tbf! its just that the gameplay was more important than the story at some point and since not alot of people cared about the story to begin with there was no point in making it a masterpiece i loved wow lore back than but it really turned to shit and i can only imagine that is not just the people writing the story that is also just the way the game was handled in generall. if your interested in warcraft lore i can only say Warcraft 1-3 storys are amazing and i bet novel has alot of videos of the old story on his mainchannel :D

The past two expansions and moreso the current one, they've ripped apart and destroyed previously established lore for this bs in the current expansion. Nobbel hit it right on the head. This is on a level of bad that can't even be brushed aside.
If it was always bad that would be whatever, but it used to be really cool and became shitty over time... Kind of like Game of Thrones.

@@Exorion1er I see it more as his last attempt. There was a quest where we use our artifact weapons together to remove it. Unfortunately, Blizz had to remove it cause "reasons". Nonetheless, still a better ending than the next 2 expansions.

Blizzard can fix this: When the sword hit in Legion, everyone got drunk in an unusually rowdy brewfest.. and BFA and SL are just a drunken dream.
Actually, I would have loved if that "thing" was us. If the universe was created to be in balance, we (as player characters) are in business in effing things up. We kill titans, we kill old gods, we come to shadowlands and turn it upside down. Thanks to us the Shadowlands will never be as they were intended (plus we let the devourers everywhere). Like if there was a semblance of balance we are the biggest threat ever to exist.
IMO, at this point I think we were asking for it.
It's not like Wow had ever an amazing storytelling. It was good at best, with sometimes some bits being really good, like some regions questchains (Stormpeaks for exemple) or narratives focused on characters (Jaina's quests in early BFA were amazing). But in general the story and storytelling was mediocre. So many retcons, so many "Shut up! It's magic", so many plot armors. This is some 8th season of GOT's level of writing, which is according to certain people in loreteam really good....
So yeah, at this point still having hope in Wow's lore is on me...
I stopped in the middle of 9.1, but I was still curious about the conclusion of this expansion. WHAT A CONCLUSION OH BOY ! BIGGER MEANER BADDIE COMING.

Actually, this is the real hidden plot behind everything: SL is the expac where wow suffers their worst down, a death themed expac helps kill the game, and the Jailer is the main mascot of this all, hence why he's written in as the representative for every major lore event and character, and then killed at the end of the last patch with no elaboration.
Sylvanas would make a horrible Waiter, She will never serve.

Hearing all this makes me want to delve back into when the lore of Wow was good. I would love to see a series of videos detailing the entirety of events wirhin the War of the Ancients. Including the New things unvealed within Legion. We really need a fresh splash of good lore to reinvigorate us after being beaten down with this mess.

This but unironically. The the lead narrative dev responsible for Shadowlands actually watched GoT S8 and tweetted that he thought it was brilliant.
WoW story back then: Simple, epic, Orcs, Humans, Dragons.
WoW story today: Overly convoluted, overly dramatic, existential and yet... just bad
The great threat that Jailer speaks about is the wow devs and lore division. Their are the greatest threat of WoW.
We kinda do know what Elune has done. Nightelves don't go to the Shadowlands when they die. The become wisps, right? That is the gift of Elune, but this time they burned to a crisp and where send straight to Ardenweald... ups, no to the Maw. Elune implied that she tried to help with the drought and condemned her favorites this way.
Anyway, I feel so smart about quitting in WOTLK and just returning to play through legion for a few months. That here is the taste of sweet, sweet confirmation bias most likely, but it tastes so good. ;-)
I used to love watching nobbel lore videos, but that means that there has to be interesting lore to talk about. It's sad that this is what the warcraft story has come to.

Voidlords are fairly recent in the lore.
The freeing of Anduin cut scene is an anomaly in the Shadowlands story line. All spirits go to the Shadowlands to sent to their proper destination, yet Varok and Varian are outside the Shadowlands to manfest and undue the Jailers control of Anduin.
"Any questions?" As if anyone, even the current writing team, could ever answer them.
"Thats the Story of the Shadowlands, any questions?"
Uh......What motivates the Jailer? How did he know about this mysterious threat? Why didn't when he was the Arbiter call a council meeting in Oribos and say somethings coming and we need to be prepared for it? Why did Sylvannas say she will never serve after she spends years serving? Why is it that when you completely remove BFA and Shadowlands entirely we have the same story of the burning Legion Dealt with and they add literally nothing? Why does Azeroths Soul alone have the power to obliterate Realities? How did the Jailer know that Sargeras would stab the planet in defeat? Why did Sargeras Stab the planet? Why is the Jailer wrong to remake reality to prepare for the next big bad? (Going to be honest im on team jailer all things considered let him remake reality and rid us of this awful story and retcon upon retcon.....guess Sylvannas was right she set us free from the horrible storytelling).

Why? Does he also have vocal chords? A voice box? He's a being made of pure primordial fire energy, and yet, he chooses to take on the form of a humanoid with arms and legs and fingers and a chin and a head and shoulders and feet and a mouth. Why...? Regular, non magical fire is barely affected by gravity. It can quickly and freely engulf everything around it--and that's without sentience. Picture for a moment what the evil god of fire could do if he decided to stop being stupid for five seconds.
It's because this is the Taco Bell of fantasy stories. It's cheap, easy and it fulfills a craving many people have, at least for a little while. But man oh man, is it bad for your health.
I just want Blizzards writing team to come clean and stop treating players like we're stupid.
They would rather die than come clean about anything.
Didn't they made it clear that when sylvanas threw herself from the top of the icc and she died and went to "afterlife" she was scared shitless by that place and that's why she joined the jailer in order to overthrow the life and death cycle? also after she failed to capture that valkyr's lamp in legion and she couldn't become immortal to avoid dealing with the jailer, i think that's the point where she started to go along with the plan cause she had no second plans to avoid going again to the place that scared her shitless.
They need to wipe this into nonexistence, give Christie Golden a pen and say, "Bitch, go nuts. No barriers." And see if Gav Thorpe and RR Martin can toss a few ideas in. Then bring it back.

so many plot lines could have been so good.
Example: Tyrande continues her dark knight rises path, Malfurion in his wisdom tries to stop her from becoming what she hates. She kills Malfurion, has overwelming sense of anguish for all she loved has died, gets plague bombed from the top rope, completing her story arc of becoming a new forsaken banshee queen. with the power of elune now on the side of death redirects the forsaken into arc of redemption.

She’s acting on her own will to destroy “death”. She worked with the jailer because none of us would help her. She is helpless and the jailer was the only one who agreed to help her, even though he was actually manipulating her.
If she succeeded in destroying the Shadowlands, there will be no more death, and the dead people might come back to life, and everybody gains immortality.
She burned Teldrassil thinking that we would help her destroy death and rescue those who died. But instead, we decided to fight her and protect the establishment, condemning the dead elves to death.
As for why we didn’t kill Sylvanas at the end, I’m again surprised even Nobbel doesn’t understand that “death” has little meaning in the Warcraft universe. So we kill Sylvanas. What happens to her soul? She gets sent to the Maw and suffer. Isn’t that just the same now? Okay, what if we destroy her soul like Arthas’s? She said it herself, that is actually the easy way out, and Tyrande agreed that killing her or destroying her soul is too light a punishment.
I see that many people think that the ultimate penalty is death. That’s quite superficial. The worst punishment is long-term mental and physical torture.
If I get to choose, I would join Sylvanas. We are the bad guys here by protecting the Shadowlands establishment.
I can't help myself, but seeing how Danuser doesn't want to get better, doesn't care about feedback because he has some kind of vision and he keeps destroying old lore because he can't tell a story... I feel defeated. I feel only pain and despair because there is nothing that can stop him. I've lost hope he will be fired and replaced by somebody who cares. Nobody won. Danuser didn't win because he destroyed lore. Not even people who are defending him won, because they could have get something much better. There are no winners in this. Only defeated.

This lore is seriously some of the worst fanfiction-level garbage I've seen. It's like this writing team WANTS to just shit on the history of the game to push their trash. But then again, never forget that Steve Danuser said that he found GoT season 8 "brilliant" which says it all I think.
That's the part I don't understand, and I don't want to defend SL Writing but where the heck did the game say that elune had something to do with it, (Elune part is my favorite story part in SL not that there are many^^) she did say that while the tragedy happens she had send the night elf soul to ardenweald/SL and not letting them become Whisp. I really can't understand why so many people understood it as something that was part elune fault. The only fault what I can think of is that she didn't do something to prevent it but elune as goddess really doesn't interfiere with the world. With that logic elune would also partly responsible for the Sunderring

Literally, I can feel this story was made in the last 5 minutes before the due date; just so bare minimum so that the professor doesn’t get mad at you.
I really think whoever is doing the game story, they were just perusing the internet at fan's guesses of what was happening to the Arbiter and they saw people were banking on it being Denathrius, AS THAT WOULD HAVE MADE SENSE, and seeing people doubt Argus because he's a titan and so they were like, Oh you think so? HOW ABOUT A TWIST. 🥴

i have a question... why are people STILL paying to play this game... you couldn't pay me to play this game anymore... in fact... i would pay people to stop playing this game... that is how much i despise what has happened to the lore of this game... it is so unbelievably bad... the only thing that kept me hanging on to the game was the lore... now that the writers have gone to far... wow is dead to me...
Blizzard has shit the bed with not only the game and game play but the story line and it being even a tad coherent. I think a coked out toddler could write a more cohesive story while on a 8 day bender ending in huffing a quart of glue.
