STORYLINE:
Hundreds of thousands of New Year's Eve revellers welcomed in 2006 from Times Square in New York, ignoring the sleet and snow to celebrate as the famous ball dropped on the final minutes of 2005.
Jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, joined by Dick Clark and workers who contributed to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, officially started the ball's descent and counted down the final seconds.
As confetti rained down and the numbers 2006 lit up, the crowd began a mass performance of the traditional New Year's song "Auld Lang Syne."
Forecasters predicted five to 10 centimetres (two to four inches) of snow in the city, but partygoers were still in the spirit.
Organisers expected over a million people to crowd into Time Square, and an even greater number watching on television across the world.
