Sorry to contradict you Larry but Foeniculm vulgare subsp. azoricum, grown in Italy is the garden fennel whom the fleshy basal part of the stem is used as vegetable. We grow and use F. vulgare subsp. vulgare as spice fennel, bitter fennel or "finocchietto"
