I'm actually learning violin, not cello, but this was the only video i could find addressing this problem. Now it makes a lot of sense, i was indeed pretty much pushing the bow onto my thumb with other fingers - not sliding the thumb itself under the bow like i thought.
I never knew why it always felt like I was about to drop my bow. These exercises and the explanation of the mechanism are so incredibly helpful. Feels like my whole bow hand finally fell into place. Thank you so much!
Works like magic! Well it’s not magic but yet again, Billy has a way of explaining and demonstrating exactly what fixes frustrations in playing. Thank you for sharing this!
I started playing 2 weeks ago tomorrow, at the age of 33. Coming from guitar and musical background, which helps. But cello is it's own animal... It's nice to see other adult learners who have been successful learning the instrument.
Fabulous explanation - thank you!
could you adress in detail the left thumb right position with camera demonstrating what is good please? I cannot get a comfortable position after a year playing daily. thank you for your work,
Thank you so much for a wonderful tip!!!
Is this the concept for an up bow?
Thank you! Could you do a video about “sotie”? Fast bowing which is needed in 2 movement of Elgar Cello Concerto? I will be very grateful 🙏🏻🌷
Just so you can look for other resources if he doesn't see this comment, it's spelled "sautille"
I do not agree with conventional wisdom. The u shaped position of the Frog is a natural position. The hypothenar muscle group is a natural muscle aid to allow the thumb and 5th finger to oppose one another. It is a natural movement. The conventional bow grip does not follow normal physiology. All of the conventional wisdom is not anatomical. Hence, invites overuse syndrome and, therefore, pain. Would recommend thumb position to be in the U of the bow. There are,in fact, famous cellists who grip their bow in this fashion.
I totally agree with this comment. The conventional wisdom is that the thumb opposes the second finger. If the tip of the second finger touches the silver area before the Frog, then a conventional grip makes sense. If the second finger moves posteriorly, then a conventional thumb in the U of the Frog is a better grip. Has to do with the balance of the bow.
This is really helpful! 🫶
