For 2018, Dodge has made the Demon's wider body work available on the Hellcat as well, with wider front and rear tracks and now running 30mm larger, 305-section Pirelli P-Zero tires! We hit the track at Buttonwillow to find that yes, the wider Challenger is more stable at high speed bends and more predictable in corner entry and lower speed corners. This Challenger is equipped with the 8-Speed Automatic transmission and has an MSRP of $75,000
Fiat Chrysler America provided the vehicle, a tank of gas, and insurance for this review. - Авто та транспорт
"The footprint is more Tahoe than the 911,
and the weight is more minivan than MG,
and the engine is more dragcar than anything else."
That really sums it up nicely, Matt!
its just pure madness and fun!
I still think this is the best 2-door 5-passenger car you can buy for street use.
This car will age as well as the mkiv Supra mk my words!
A lot of people talk shit about how heavy it is and how bad it handles, blah blah blah, but having driven one, I can say that 99% of people would run out of balls before the car runs out of grip in the corners. Easy to buy into internet hype without any real experience with a product I suppose e.
Girth Vader
You're a 100% right. Most of the keyboard warriors posting on this wouldn't have the balls to go half as fast as this man is going on the same track especially with that car. And for that matter, I didn't see a whole lot of understeer in the corners. Pretty impressive engineering for a car that's off-balance and overpowered!
Everything you’ve said is true, but weight is not just something you feel at the limits of grip, you feel the weight all the time in the steering
Cornering grip is just one way to measure handling.
Thats because it dosent inspire confidence when cornering. Which means the handling ain't that good.
It handels more like a Tahoe 😂😂😂
Strange to see all the comments here about the weight of the car.. This car is supposed to be a 2+2 GT and for the money, it does a very good job of that. The Camaro and Mustang are better for track work, this is just for another market segment for which it does not have to compete with them.
And being in the US, you get to pick which of them is more suited to your personality, that's the beauty of the free market. I think it would be weird to have 3 manufacturers trying to all build the same kind of vehicle. I get it when it comes to trucks, where the Sales volumes can mean large fleet orders, but for this...
The people that like the Challenger will buy it and know exactly what it does and what it's for. Of all the things being made in the US now, it is the closest in spirit to what the old Chrysler B platform did. A large, 2-door 4-seater with huge power and comfort on a long drive.
The Mustang and Camaro are inching towards sports car territory with every generation, sticking to NA engines and tweaking suspensions. They're not supposed to carry 4 people for 1000 miles burbling away at 70MPH turning 2200 RPM with enough torque on reserve to pass a semi.
That the Challenger just handles a bit better now is a welcomed bonus, but whoever bought Hellcats or Challengers before didn't do it to go canyon carving in them...
vtr0104 The Mustang and Camaro are doing now what they did then with their special models including the Challenger. Nothing has really changed.
Emperor - exactly, so like the original poster was saying, why do people continue to act like "it's too heavy and can't turn" well... nothing new, because that's the design. It was done on purpose with that intent.
I was arguing that they could handle in the 60's (Boss 302, ZL1, Challenger T/A), thus them doing it now is no surprise.
Love the way the Challenger was designed. As fat as she is...just fine with me.

Shouldn’t the title read One Wake?
Shouldn't your joke be original?
haha even though I love it, I say yes.
But this isn't a boa- WAIT A SECOND
lol cuz it weighs as much as a boat
Kevin Kurz 🤣👍🏻👍🏻
I wish Dodge would put this drivetrain in a Ram 1500 reg cab short/step side box and do a Lil Red Express tribute truck. I'd buy it tomorrow if they made it.
Derek Joon Buy a used Viper truck or build one. I'm still dreaming of the C10R Matt reviewed. That would be a sick ride!
Derek Joon.. Yes Sir!! That would be badass.. There should be a new RedExpress and a Warlock version in black, just the two color options
Drop that powertrain in a Pacifica... they put it in every one else of their POS cars.
Clifford Bradford Are you just butthurt your still driving mommies mini van?
Dodge ram hellcat.. hell yes.
Finally a real review on the wide body performance.
I already have a track car for corners. This thing is absolutely beautiful! The color matches the interior seats and gauges so well! It’s got massive power and it’s heavy and comfortable. It would be great for long road trips and still do a little spirited driving with the wide body. Can’t beat that rare muscle car feel this thing would bring. Like I said, I already have cars for cornering. I don’t want a widebody Hellcat to corner.
That B-Roll sound! We need a video of those flybys.
It still weighs less than an RS7 and people track those and enjoy it. It seems to be handling it decently with some pads/fluid
This is excellent perspective to add! Would happily put lighter seats, remove rear seats, wider tires, and lightweight wheels to make this a beast. Best looking muscle car on sale in my opinion!
High surf advisory 😂😂😂
It sucks you barely ever see the manual hellcats.
my first review from 2014 was with a manual!
Wtf is the point if a manual in one of these boats. Its suicide. Manual shouldn’t even be an option.
AMEN BROTHER STICK SHIFT OR NOTHING MAN !!!
That car sounds so great flying by on the straight.
Damn, that sound is coming out really well in this video. The baritone note has been captured nicely.
Octane Red is a really nice colour. Great video as always.
I ran my Scatpack Widebody yesterday at VIR using Street for Traction, suspension in Track, Steering and Transmission in Sport. First time ever on a road course, had a blast, car was phenomenal
Well done @thesmokingtire as always. It does look very good. Not my cup of tea, but a really neat car. Looking forward to Jeff's work on Truck Central and Hooniverse!
Ah, Buttonwillow. The first track I've driven and the track I've driven the most. It is a great balance of flowing and technical (and tough on brakes), after sampling others I appreciate it a lot!
It's also immediately obvious what the track and tire width increases do to the car's handling and stability just by watching the video. Being a guy who's not so turned on by burnouts and big power drifts, and prefer to geek out on the chassis and meld with the way a car feels over the road, this suddenly makes me much more interested in the Hellcat.
Have to commend Matt on these....one of the few who can speak coherently and make relevant points while hustling something around at triple digits.
i like your honest reviews,
this track looks amazing
Thanks Matt, Jeff Glucker is in fact good people!
Who are you to say that? ;)
looks like a whole Lotta fun to me! car can do it all! cruise across country, fun track car, and drag king. for what it is, it's the best!
Love the track content!!! Great video!!
In the external drive-by shots, the sound of this beast is the most wicked nasty awesome that I have ever heard from a SHOWROOM PRODUCTION car.
Lost it on the surf advisory. Well done Matt, keep it up sir.
Such a fun video to watch and an awesome track to play on.
'Murica!!! Made in Canada. Great car, love it. I am a bit biased, I love big powerful coupes.
Was drifting one as a passenger at Barrett Jackson yesterday with one of the PRO DRIVERS DODGE hires to drive and my ego was totally shattered to see how these guys drifted the Hellcat in a very small area with just about 0 room for error or your into the cement NJ barriers that make up the tight track and they were carrying some serious speed by the last corner....easily 60-70 mph or better. I forgot his name but the guy I went with was the sickest out of them all he was about 45-50 years old and a little heavy set and about 5 foot 7 at the most and by looking at him you would not think he was such a PIMP behind the wheel.....I was so impressed with him I got back in line and made sure I got him again....he was happy to see me again too and he flogged the piss out of that ORANGE HELL CAT CHALLENGER. I said to him you just shattered my ego and he chuckled a little and said "I have had a few laps in my day" which was a very modest way of saying he was a PRO.......and he was......what made it more impressive is that they were all autos and we all know manuals are way easier to drift than automatics. I could have sat in that car all day with him drifting that thing....it was so much fun I can't even explain in words.....I think I want a Hellcat now after riding in that thing it was friggin insane!!!! Total OVERKILL.....RALPH GILLES......TOUCHE' MOTHER FUCKER...THANK YOU FOR BUILDING THAT THING AND PUSHING ALL THE OTHER MANUFACTURERS TO ANTE UP!!!! .....
I love that whine!
Julien Durand true
Real modern muscle car. Not a pony.
That car sounds glorious.
um.... 2002 Bmw review stat!!!
Probably a built 1600 with dual Webers, complete race suspension, 23x7in racing slicks on 14-in. Gram Lite wheels, full cage, seam welded, running 4.10:1 limited-slip rear diff. and body mods... but, that's just a guess.
thats a very specific and detailed guess there
It's a beast '02, 2.5 TABS winner last year.
who cares about a 16 year old beamer /s
Erm, BMW quit selling the 2002's in 1977, so that's a 40+ year old car leaving a 2018 model in the dust. :-P
Anything over 450hp on a track is a nightmare to road race. But it sure as hell is fun in a straight line.
I have a 392 widebody on 325 888s and it’s like glue
Just get good
Really like the new Chargers/Challengers. They should make a wide body Charger and a Demon Charger as well
TheReal NateDogg new chargers?? It's the same ones for over a decade now
Nothing about any of the FCA products are new, at all. At this point theyre just modifying the same car over and over and over, milking and milking and milking
D Motorsports well as long as people are dumb enough to only see 707hp on the spec sheet then they'll keep selling, so it'll probably be still around in 25 years, just like it's chassis that has been around for 25 years already.
D Motorsports if it ain't broke...
It is broke though. Very low quality standards and a lack of modern engineering are apparent in the Dodge lineup. I will say that once they finally move to the Guilia platform it probably get better.
Excellent review....
You were hawling that big girl around the track......
With some R compounds that thing would make some Z06 owners cry ......
Thanks You Matt ;;;;;; great video !
8:15 I think you need to be fully stopped to turn the TC off.
you do and even then it is not completely off. to turn it off completely you must disable ABS, a Trinity tuner does that in 5 seconds; to be tried with extreme caution
Great info for turn 13!!
Awsome Matt :). Hey are you planning to come to aus for doing custom car reviews like the one you did in NZ a couple of years ago?
If that car was maybe 800lbs lighter Id be into it, but when its heavier than some small counties I have to say no. Though I must say the hellcat wide body is kinda like tattoos for me: cool when other people have them.
It's less painful to get rid of a car.
Well said
Awesome car. Despite being a heavy boat but it looks so meaner with the widebody.
They must had remapped the transmission because the downshifts rev match sooo much better
If I recall, they did make enhancements.
Looks fast.Glad you didnt quit making these yet.
Great video. I reviewed the widebody Hellcat and TrackHawk on my channel. I drove both back to back at Monticello Motorclub. The wider tires made a difference for the Wide-body compared with the narrow body Hellcat but you still had to carefully feed in the throttle. The TrackHawk, with its all wheel drive got the power down much easier, even though it weighs more. I wish the Wide-body had a manual transmission, that would be great on the track.
16:00 Miata spins off the track
eh i think this should have probably come standard, but its good that its now an option
seems pretty badass! Thanks!
That's a great track, so much run-off space - nothing like that around here.
That Mercedes E Class chassis still holding up in 2018 lol
Santiago Luna can't wait till they go with the new chassis 2019
not until late 2020
Not the same chassis
www.autonews.com/article/20110624/BLOG06/110629919/with-new-300-and-charger-chrysler-sheds-mercedes-halo
uses e class suspension in rear and s class in the front
I need a Hellcat in my life
Took those corners surprisingly well for what the car is
Matt should do truck reviews on truck central
Matt see if you can get your hands on a 335d with hybrid turbos and a stage 4 tune. Im very curious to hear your feedback. I have a stage 2.8 JR tuned 335d putting out around 375hp and 600 lbft.. also has the xHP transmission tune. Its a blast.
Question; I’m considering selling my 2012 Cammed Grandsport and getting a hellcat. I need a backseat.. do you think this car still feels sporty enough or should I be looking at a zl1?
I just got one of these for a week. Looking forward to it, also a little scared to be honest.
I fully believe everything Matt said about how much more stable the widebody is because holy shit is he caning that thing!
Definitely a modern day " MAD MAX" car lol!
He picked up this hellcat from my work! Was able to meet matt as well!
Just curious - why the window down requirement?
And Id love to see a pic or 2 of those tires after a decent track day.
Are Road and track videos part of the normal one take schedule or will they continue on this channel?
Question: If I were to hand you the keys to your choice a 2020 Hellcat wide body RedEye 8 speed auto or a 2020 Camaro ZL1 1le auto 10 speed which would you take - honest, unbiased, unbridled answer please ...? Driving some track, some drag, lots of street
They should really make the widebody an option for the t/a. That would be a great track day car that could compete more with the Camaro and Mustang offerings.
Traction control in track limits the amount of wheel spin, so if your trying to slide more, sport is the setting to go to. To turn it all off you have to be stopped, I'll let you guys do research on what to do next haha. I was contemplating getting a wide body because of the "better" handling, but for 75k I'd just get a zl1 1le for the track.
Was waiting for a widebody to hit the turns
Yeah whatever happened to the smaller Cuda that was supposed to be out by now?
I drove a 2016 hellcat and unfortunatly was only the black key as it was from a dealership and my brother in law worked as a salesman and we took it out because we could. Was very dissapointed considering 500hp should have still been pretty quick. Felt quite slow and you could feel the weight. Idk how much better the red key makes it but according to my butt dyno my tuned 1.8t jetta felt just as quick. Guess ill have to experience the red key one day.
hahaha the fly by at 2:49 is funny it reminds of cartoons fly by 😂😂
That is a really clean looking engine bay for a factory car
Matt have you ever drive in Nurburgring?
Maybe I missed where you said, but where you driving this de-tuned or at the full 707 hp?
I'd wonder how the new Widebody R/T Scat Pack would do??
I love how the widebody looks and the SC whines. Would've been great if there was a widebody Charger, though. More practical, same insanity.
Tom T. The widebody looks kinda tacky, looks like stuck on fenders. They should've molded them add on fenders
Last I checked the Camaro isn't much lighter. Also why are you in sport mode on a track?
It's amazing what just a little bit of suspension geometry tweaking and wider tires can do to a pig like the Challenger.
Hey Matt I remember a long time ago when you reviewed a chevy s10, there was a BMW 4.6is in the background. Since the end of the one takes are approaching, just wondering if it was reviewed and if so, will the one take come out soon. thx
it was not. That belonged to Bill Caswell who was just hanging around that day.
Ah too bad. Would love to hear your opinion on it. If you ever need a 4.8is, feel free to contact me.
I drove this at Gingerman for a driving school, it was WAY better than it had a right to be. But still WAY to big and heavy and too much power for Gingerman, but it was fun.
people taking a piss over the heft of the hellcat should keep in mind of its content and that the original hemi challenger and charger were over 4,000 pounds. they are not sports cars they were and are gt cars. hell, even the current honda civic is well over 3,000 whereas the original was about 2,000. get over it kiddies.
Hey I was wondering what happened to him like his videos
Hellcat Redeye Widebody or Cayman 718 GTS?
I like it
I have no interest in ever owning one of these but I do think the widebody Hellcat is a very good looking car. Very mean!
It’s a better with the windows down. Make the video more raw and give a better perspective during high speed runs. The best part is louder exhaust and enjoy noise!
4:13 ... did I catch a 'shit' going into that turn? lol
Suspension in Street.... not too soft for track duty?
When is the fox body mustang t shirt coming?
Matt how does the widebody compare to a 5th gen z28? Thanks @thesmokingtire
Come to think of it, the mix of serious mass, high horsepower and fat tires on all corners with rear-wheel drive in a front-engine layout is eerily similar to a stock car, isn't it? No wonder it's so planted and pliable.
This is beast with family in mind lol! Want cornering ability? Go Vette or Viper.
Those cars are nuts... I wish they would sell them in Aus...!
Yes but mutch aspiration in Compressor and mutch soupapes (MAD MAX)
Makes me want a gt3 even more 😏
OMG Imagine if they made a Charger Hellcat widebody from factory
Integrafreak1 they do lol unless u mean widebody
Eagle Scout Bryan LOL yeah thats what I meant *WIDEBODY Charger!!
I bring confirmations from the future
Please review 2017/18 Audi rs3
Damn, that thing weighs nearly same as my F150 Lightning (4570lbs). What a fucking boat.
But a damn good one at that
It weighs as much as two of my MR2’s! Yikes.
That explains why it was warning Matt of the high surf.
Benjamin Stubbs Not really. Handling sucks!
Pretty fast boat
I just did some calculations, and to get the same power-to-weight ratio as this car, I would just need to stick a stock LS3 in my 240SX. I'm seriously considering it now.
I know! I wanted to go RB25 for the longest time, but an LS3 is sooo tempting.
Bang for the buck LS3 and cheap parts for days. I have a LQ9 on my engine stand waiting for a donor....
DO IT!!!
At 4:16 got a lil squirrely on you huh? Look like you was gonna mess yourself for a second there 😂😂
awesome
I see that shifting is "slow"...have you had a chance to compare it to the 8 and 10 speed auto of the Camaro and Mustang?
The ZF in this car is definitely better than the old 8-speed GM was using, but I have not had a chance to drive any GM or Ford with the new 10-speed yet.
I still think you should have gotten a spot on Top Gear America.
