The Klamath river deserves to be natural
The tribes deserve to thrive
That may mean that electricity needs to be shut off in a shared manner as these Dam's provide about 2% of electricity for the area. Some other reports suggest the salmon may not come back due to climate related issues, making this an expensive experiment. The 500 million to tear down is 2x the cost that was sugggested to have built salmon ladders. If the salmon do not come back wil be a loss on 3 fronts; Salmon ,electricity, and water storage which has only been been touched on lightly. I can on hope it will not be a case of "Stupid is as Stupid does" as I believe a rebuild of torn down dams could easily be in the 10's of BILLIONS. As for government wisdom - we tend to look at "either or" options vs hybrid solutions.

The tribes have got gambling. They aren't going around in canoes fishing for salmon. I know of a woman from a tribe in Hollywood Florida getting 10k a month from gambling dividends to tribal members. Each of her kids get $2500.00 a month. True story.

I remember back in 2000 driving up to Requa along the north shore of Klamath River mouth is the smell of smoked salmon wafting from locals houses. Kept the car window down to enjoy it!
It's very possible and positive, but there's honestly no guarantee. You can build the river, slow it down, add rocks, etc. There isn't any guarantee that the salmon will come back in numbers. I would suggest they close the rivers from fishing for at least 3 years minimum. So many things can go wrong, but many things can also go right. I wish the state, workers and tribes the best of luck.

they allready did actually, luckily it seems that they never fully stopped salmon migration up river, perhaps there were populations that could spawn in branches they did have access to, with the river restored they can however go further up and perhaps reach colder waters that are more suitable for them, and it's not just salmon offcourse
+ dams have far more issues than just fish population decline, they harm all traditional river life in various ways and importantly reservoirs have been found to be a highway for parasites, the Aswan dam lead to widespread malaria infection and a massive deathtoll as the population living in middle-upper egypt had next to no resistance to it+ were at the time suffering widespread malnutrition.
OMG what a victory, not just for the tribe but for earth. It is damming that has destroyed so much land. Congratulations to the tribe!
It will help the salmon population as a whole in the Pacific Ocean as well. The Tribe is just one small part of a huge chain of organisms that will benefit.
It is useful and good to not associate natural habitats with sociological or artificial boundaries since they are intrinsic to the synergy of life.
The more we refer to them and their denizens as intrinsic to their territorial region the more the focus on their overall value will be.

We need to learn to build projects in coordination with NATURE and not in coordination with rich politicians and big corporations.

You mean when government actualy was capable of progress not guided by concerns from the few who oppose progress. This for example is no more than window dressing. Do you actualy think native Americans still live in teepees near running water, which makes hunting and gathering more accessible to native salmon and fresh water. In reality native Americans enjoy all the comforts we delivered them. From cable TV to cell phones to heated dwellings flush with ac. Many gladly accept government handouts to fund their cozy lifestyles while useing our court system to demand more handouts. And lately the only time they seem content is when they win approval to clear cut their sacred lands to build massive casinos.

About the Trinity River. A healthy river has many juvenile small fish through out its system. You see them especially during summer. The Trinity is near void of small fish. Why is this ? Trinity has ample spawning areas. But fish are not spawning in the main river.
Is it good that there is many people floating the river, disturbing any fish that might be in there ?
well yeah if you rewild an area to a state it was in 100 or so years ago there wil also be (mostly short term) negative consequences, indeed wildfires could be a major issue at first, however if you look back you see that wildfires were always quite frequent but when we began moving to prevent them entirely we also created the conditions that caused the ones that we now see to be enormously more devastating. (though it's important to note that it is also due to a recent seemingly hybrid tendency in which the removal of dead material from forest is stopped abruptly whilst still not intending wildfires to return, these measures should be taken but they should be taken piecemeal, not all at once because now these forests are essentially either all old or all new trees, in a more mixed forest it wil be better
also removing the dam no doubt wil restore former wetlands as well, in the longterm the environment wil be served by it, but again regarding certain measures these should be eased in

I have people close to me in the Yurok & Hupa Tribes that live there. I myself have been in Hupa on the Trinity River where the Kurok tribe once lived.
In a few years, the salmon will recover if they are only collected after spawning and the fertilized eggs are left alone.
You know salmon die after they spawn, right? What difference does it make to collect fish that are dead, how is that supposed to help? You can't eat decaying fish, plus their bodies provide nutrients for other fish and creatures that live in the river. Also, no one is collecting fertilized eggs. Salmon eggs are taken out female fish that have been caught when they're being processed for food; their eggs are only fertilized after they've been expelled from the body and laid in the river. I've never heard of anyone digging around in the river looking for fertilized eggs. I grew up on the Rogue River and we learned all about this in elementary school.

I suspect the age of these dams is a major driver, but it is so nice to see Native Americans listened to. I not unsympathetic, but fire risks and property values are coming back to the builders of these things. As for water shortages like in the Colorado Basin, roughly 70% of that is agriculture and a good percentage of that goes to China. We are basically destroying our ecology over agricultural over production.
Instead of removing the dams why don't they build a passage for the salmon to bypass the dam?
Here we have a state running out of water and the nincompoops in office decide to eliminate some dams.

removing the dams, does not stop the water supply, for fighting wild fires develop a new system for accessing the water, this can be done w/ a little engineering

Four large dams make how much electricity ? In a state with an already broken power grid. Taking them down is a good thing but like every thing else the state isn't prepared for the out come. Going Green is a good thing but maybe we could stop sending billions of dollars on Ukraine and use that money on solar and battery technology.
What about farming the Salmón in indoor lakes likes Trouts, Shrimp, ect. You know the Government want to restrict the water because the west is drying and California can't live without theirs fancy pools.

How about not netting all of the first down river and they will thrive. How’s it going to work with California droughts in the summer? There will be no water for the fish. How about record rainfall like this year? Flooding of so many homes. California already doesn’t have enough power for the people now and in a few short years only EV’s being sold but let’s pull out good clean power…… makes so much sense.

our wonderful economic policies have all but killed the Chesapeake bay and puget sound and so many dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico . hope that they can get this right and restore just a few rivers for all the destruction that has been done to what was once long ago

Once those dams are completely removed there wont be anything left of that water supply it will be down to alittle stream when things level out I would be willing to bet they will almost dry up at times in the near future

I happen to live next to this reservation wonder why they don't talk about in the 90s when they got all their tribal money and they built all those brand new beautiful houses and got all those new pickup trucks and within a year the houses had no doors or Windows animals walking in and out of the houses and brand new pickups up on blocks and front yards that look like they lived in the yard not the house or the violence that comes from this tribe still to this day
They also didn’t talk about back in the days when white people come in and kill most of their people.

If we can save the fish for the native Americans it would be worth all the surrounding forests to burn up for lack of water to fight the fires.? Sometimes the end just don't justify the means. Repercussions are many.

no clue what yer last comment was but I've walked through NorCal reservations on Friday night. Beautiful place. Also there is no Southern Oregon reservation.
A short news segment cannot address the full breadth of issues surrounding salmon recovery. But this spot is so narrow as to ignore the many region-wide environmental, economic, and social benefits salmon provide, benefits dams take away. Not that salmon recovery for the benefit of Klamath indigineous people isn't important enough, but healthy Klamath basin salmon runs will benefit coastal communities far beyond the basin itself. And any cardiologist will tell you, we should all be eating more salmon and fewer burgers.

there aren't many agricultural crops in the Klamath river valley. Drinking water has never come from those dams. Flooding? The dams don't really stop flooding. I think the tribes are more concerned about food. You know, cause you die without it.
Couldn’t they create a series of fish weirs (mini damns) to slow the water but still keep it open to salmon? That is actually a traditional indigenous practice.

The dams aren’t the problem!! It’s the over fishing everywhere, part of a natural evolution. Why have the salmon and chinook runs decreased so much in coastal rivers also. There are many of those rivers that have never had dams and their runs are diminishing also.

The tribe had to adapt to the destruction of the river and the endangering of the salmon; therefore, the others need to adapt to living without the water reservoirs. You build in a fire prone area, then adjust your building codes and stop building with wood or don’t rebuild after the fires destroy the entire town.

Salmon, as a living creature, may be one of the best foods humans can eat. Scottish people feel that way,
where the northern seas are the northern salmon fishing grounds going back to the Garden of Eden.
Let me explain. Salmon are born fresh-water creatures. When they leave their birth-place and enter the ocean,
talking about Pacific sockeye salmon, they change into salt-water creatures. Scientists don't know if this
happens immediately or if it takes time. Despite swimming all over the Pacific, and surviving, these salmon
will find their way back to the birthplace to lay eggs. Being back in fresh water distorts their metabolism,
and they die. Humans are half fresh-water as our bodies and we're still salt water in our blood. Eating salmon
helps to bridge that difference.
There are two different kinds of food. Food that is pre-digested or not digested. Eating another animals is
getting the chemicals that animal turned food into, and what it turns you into after eating it. When you eat
undigested food your body turns it into the chemicals you need. If all you did was eat meat you would die.
When you pick and eat food while it's living you absorb that energy of living, as important as nutrients.
Many languages have a word to describe that. The English language, and the watered-down American, don't.
Even if salmon regain a foothold I think typical American fishing enthusiasts will take advantage more than native Americans. And if salmon don't gain foothold taxpayers will fund not only tearing down dams they paid for but also extensive studies on underlying causes of salmon conundrum. Leading salmon experts will be assembled with open ended massive contracts who's only incentive is dragging out study as long as possible to maximize contract value. And after the historic salmon study is complete their finding will resemble a lengthy well worded version of what an average fisherman would have found, suggesting enviornment needed for once thriving salmon suffered a lengthy shock caused by damming their enviornment which created this catastrophic shock. Only the elite team of salmon experts will include in their findings, that global warming may contribute to this salmon conundrum as global warming is a hot topic and could possibly justify their value to taxpayers by giving government and media another shell for their shell game
