gameplay wise this was really fun to rp as well as the homebrew class had some restrictions starting with your con and str being capped at 12 AT MOST with even amulets of health and belts of strength couldnt increase it as 'your innate magic and perhaps fate touch from whatever accident granted you your innate magic prevents whatever injuries and mortal limitations from being alleviated as if they were the cost by fate itself for this' with than you could have a total of 17 spells with aside from the joker cards which each could have WHATEVER spell you wanted on them which does also mean you could make your joker a 5th level spell or below which would be upcast to 5th level like warlock spells so they scale later in the game, your other cards would be too numerous to EACH have a unique spell but luckily and again, almost as if ordained by fate itself, you could hold roughly 17 spells which again, ignoring the jokers means you could have 4 casts of 13 chosen spells at any given time AND this works like wizard and cleric prep where you choose when you make your cards (you can make them during short rests or if you dont need to sleep like if your undead for example, you could even times than i care to count as i stuck to 10 con and 6 str with 20 chr cause that was my spellcasting modifer as a magician with than i even maxed out my dex cause i did a 2 level dip into warlock for armor of shadows and the great old one telepathy ability (didnt bother with the patron stuff and me and the dm decided to ignore it) with than a 2 level dip into wizard with i chose divination to again, save my ass some more with my feats were keen mind, alert, and i than just put asi's into my dex and chr with some into int and wis for the saves. all in all it was hella fun to play a charlatan wizard capable of casting 9th level spells but at the same time never actually able of ACTUALLY casting even just a simple 2nd level spell properly always believing himself to be a fraud and a shame even as he started to make demi planes consistantly and with a unique arcane artifact my dm made cause in his hellscape, having cards run out cause i had to keep blasting at times was a healing itself and in no need of SLEEP meaning you can spend your long rests simply making cards and with my jacked perception stat i hard focused along with insight since i got to start with both my The whole “you can’t make the same character twice” I feel like is pretty true. Twice now I’ve had a campaign fall out and end relatively quickly after they began. Both times I really liked my characters, and so I just played them again. And both times, even though I’ve kept the same through lines and traits, the party and world have ultimately changed how my character acted in ways I couldn’t predict.
There was a time when I was depressed and couldn’t play my main guy (his name is Cain) because I had a falling out with a group. Ever since then I played different characters with a different skill set. But whenever I tried to make“Cain” again, replicating the multiclass and gimmicks, it felt like something was off and I didn’t want to play that copy character. Well, at least I liked playing “copy characters” with different personalities and have a single aspect of Cain’s kit dialed higher. That was a year ago. Now I’m alright and still playing as Cain, if the game allows all players to be powerful. Or I play as his kid variation who is very fun to roleplay as, probably a lot more than his adult-self. I’ve made many more characters that are my stylings and hard multiclass ideas, but that dude is my champion. So much so that half my DnD friends just refer me as Cain instead of my real name. One character I have in development is a undead gunslinger, he was sewn together from the parts of legendary heroes that were considered their “best parts” things like the fastest Draw, the best eyesight, even an arcane tattoo or two that no one else could copy in truth. He travels for the sake of trying to live up to all the legacy’s defiled to make him just for the sake of winning a war. He feels unworthy of his life cause it in practice ruins and mutilates those who died with honor and glory, so he throws himself into danger for the sake of it. So that way he could try and be just as great and grand despite in the shadows.
Oh dang, that’s crazy cool I love that. It makes me curious of how he came to be and who was responsible for sewing him together. It also reminds me a lot of the book Frankenstein. Really though, that’s super cool. I would love to hear more.

It references how they are different; Baking requires complex ratios and formulas, making it less forgiving. Meanwhile cooking is a lot more free form, you can get the same outcome by following a thousand different processes. So in the words of Bilbo Baggins, "All of them all at once, I suppose."

I actually find that there is one trick that works more than anything else to make a unique character. You don't have to plan out all the things that make them unique. Instead, start be figuring out the archetypical, most generic version of the character you want to make, and pick _just one thing_ about them that contradicts that archetype. Make a Rogue who's too trusting, a Wizard who's learned a lot of misinformation, a greedy Cleric, a Barbarian who's well versed in proper etiquette, or a nearsighted sharpshooter who wears glasses. Once you have a contradiction for your character, you can build from there by asking yourself questions about why they're like that, how it affects them, and what makes them pursue the career they're in despite it.
I've made a med-huge(at lvl7) character who's specialty is hand to hand and grappling, tanky as hell, comes from a criminal past and he's in his twilight years for his race which is about 300yrs total. But his quirk is he's taken up cooking over the years as a therapeutic activity. I plan on introducing him to the group as hired muscle
My friend made a greedy Cleric. It was so fun and annoying omg, but yeah it kinda made it difficult for the party since he charges for gold every time he heals people.
My character is a changeling who was adopted by humans and then ran out of his city after he fell in love with the mayor’s daughter and told her his secret. He’s overly friendly because he’s terrified of being alone but he also believes the people who called him a monster. He fights at a range because if he drops to half health he has to make a concentration check to maintain his disguise and he’s oddly aggressive in combat for such a cheerful guy. He also loves making desserts for people.
That hiding a piece of yourself while acting like its all alright was a core theme for my first Homebrew race an OC they exploit people under false context they act super innocent like there child body or play into how adult they truly are but forgo themselves as a person which makes NPC options go dummy crazy
I think I get the cooking analogy. If I come in with a character that's Tikka Masala and you're making Garlic Bread, they still work great together with some adjustments, like I might bring down the spice level so the party can enjoy it, while you might make Garlic Naan to help mesh with the character at the table
As a DM, I put thought into the lives of key NPCs in my settings, just enough so that I have an idea of what sort of person they are. If the party decides to befriend them, I develop them a bit more. For a rare few, I get to give them their own short story.
Good video, I have a character concept already I just don’t have a group yet. My character is basically an Aasimar born to a human society. Her older brother who is also an Aasimar serves as competition for her. Think of it like a Thor and Loki marvel situation. Both are great but her brother takes advantage of his age and quickly latches onto certain concepts before her. Her admiration slowly over time turned into Envy and she slowly feels inferior. The truth is her brother does this because he wants her to have a normal life and not be the spotlight all the time. I haven’t made the part of when or how she leaves because I don’t have a group yet but I am excited for when I get to play her.
my wife and best friend are really good at roleplaying and acting so they tend to be the "main characters" when we play dnd. I have a harder time being the interesting character that gets the spotlight. I tend to be the side character that lowkey carries the party in niche areas ( i like building characters that are good at a specific thing). This video helped me a lot to help make a character that makes roleplaying and acting much easier as I have a difficult time fully " becoming" my character.

I had a character I made that was a Skeleton who was kept alive using a Magic item, specifically a necklace. He pretends to be a normal person but it absolutely terrified of dispell magic because he is not sure what it will do to him and he loves being “alive”. He ends up leading this almost Robin Hood like group of bandits that try to help out people of less wealthy towns in exchange for shelter. Most of his “bandits” are aware of what he is but he’s such a good guy that they don’t care at this point.
Usually i pick a part of my personality and turn it up to eleven when i make a new character, some examples of this are: Braddley Dough, the half orc fighter from a family of great bakers. With his greatest flaw being racism and stupidity. He treats mages and any arcane user as a different and inferior species. Percival Tatsu-Tengu Nephele Richarles Mc.Condor, the Air Genasi Bard with greek ancestry and a nudist tendency. He's also a rich noble from a toxic family household, his mom was the only one that supported his artistic talents, after she passed away, he fell for all the lustfull things in life: Women, men, alcohol, parties, etc... These two are my favorites, but there's a thousand ways for you to try and do the same
My most recent character is a shade, a being who exists between life and death through their own willpower. Her physical form is just a manifestation of her memories of her past life as a high elf. Her class is a special rogue that can use radiant energy like a cleric for their sneak attack. Think of them as an agent of a church that has to deal with dirty situations of the criminal element. She has taken up a level in cleric for her devotion to Corelion. But I want her to open up more and form connections better with others.
My character is a lightfoot halfling fighter/rogue who survives by robbing rich noble’s graves for valuables. His family were the hamlet’s morticians and he’s very different from what you’d expect from a halfling, normally they’re really sociable and friendly but my character is more rough around the edges. He’s quiet and broody. He does have a dumber and wilder side to him but he doesn’t show it if he can help it. His family and entire hamlet was brutally murdered by a half Dragonborn half Hobgoblin named Ra’Gulg the Butcher. He’s one of those bloodthirsty bandit chief types who literally just wanted to kill my character’s village because he stumbled on them accidentally. Ra’Gulg has lightning magic alongside being a monk and ended up scarring my character’s eye permanently. I basically made him a Sasuke type wanting revenge but an unconventional one since his race is seen as the nice and merciful type so he’s often underestimated and made fun of which leads to his wilder moments. He has anger issues unbecoming of a Halfling as well as a Wolverine level of potty mouth so he’s pretty funny when he gets mad. He’s a bit weird though, being from a family that specializes in preparing dead bodies so he’s very morbid but knowledgeable about death and his ultimate goal is to learn necromancy in order to revive his dead hamlet to help take part in his revenge on Ra’Gulg. He basically wants the zombified remains of his people to rip the dude apart. But since he has no aptitude for magic or at the very least he doesn’t believe he does so he basically has a spell book he stole from a dead necromancer’s grave that he can’t do anything with at the moment. I haven’t got a chance to fully play out his story since it’s hard to find good groups but I keep hoping one day I’ll be able to play with people so my character can finally get his revenge 😂
So my current character Todoh at the beginning of the campaign I only gave them 1 goal: To Make Friends. They are the shadow of a paladin of Helm who took what he saw as darkness inside himself and separated it from himself making a shadow. Helm and the Raven Queen gave life and well Helm did this so Todoh could try to steer him back to the light and accept the things the paladin didn't like about himself. All that is what Todoh recent learned. What is so great about this is that their original goal is that now that they have it, they now have something to lose. The more friends they make the more people they feel responsible for protecting. This is a constant struggle because todoh believes they are expendable if it keeps their friends safe. They have to learn to not jump in front of every danger that comes their way.
A great example of goku still being empathetic even in the most serious of scenarios is when he continues to fight moro, he sees this guy with such incredible power but once he realizes their massive gap in actual fighting skill he crouches down in front of him and just asks "have you ever trained?"
i notice that i enjoy very wildly different characters. i am in love with the drab/abrasive tactical mastermind such as General Tullius or Makoto Nijiima, but i also love characters that are categorically silly like Denji, i also deeply desire a more feminine character but often have trouble getting that across. i also tend to have characters' turning moments be "lock in" more so than traumatizing
I made an artificer thief for a one off of one of the only times i had actually played dnd and his name was Sneakore very reserved until it actually came to doing things, then and only then was he very extra like doing backflips to get over traps and stuff it was great
I character idea I'm messing around with is a Paladin, Oath of Conquest, who's desire for supremacy and revolution conflicts with a kinder, compassionate soul within him. How does one balance dominance and bloodlust with a disdain for oppression and abuse of power? If he topples those in power, is he any better?
I so many character like but my core resicipy is undergod plus hardship plus one element that brake the normal mold is a winner. My latest NPC is for a Halloween Dragonlance or Ravenloft Dungoncraft modual. If you dont know what that is it is how new moduals are made for Adventure League events. But the NPC is named Nibbles and he wants you to stop the Sisterhood of Morgane from doing the ritual of rejuvinations which will cause the candy of the Night of the Black Rose festival to spead a plague that kids of the city you are in. If you question Nibbles more you figure out the Kinder is also a vampire. He was named Nibbles because he is so small and his appitite is so little to drain a medium size humanoid he would have to Nibble at them for days. He is freindly and nice but I would not call him good because the main reason he is doing this is because the ritual made the city a bad hunting area for a decade after.

Make a Rogue who's too trusting, a Wizard who's learned a lot of misinformation, a greedy Cleric, a Barbarian who's well versed in proper etiquette, or a nearsighted sharpshooter who wears glasses. Once you have a contradiction for your character, you can build from there by asking yourself questions about why they're like that, how it affects them, and what makes them pursue the career they're in despite it.
I did exactly that. I made a half orc who be smol. She was fun.
I've made a med-huge(at lvl7) character who's specialty is hand to hand and grappling, tanky as hell, comes from a criminal past and he's in his twilight years for his race which is about 300yrs total. But his quirk is he's taken up cooking over the years as a therapeutic activity. I plan on introducing him to the group as hired muscle
My friend made a greedy Cleric. It was so fun and annoying omg, but yeah it kinda made it difficult for the party since he charges for gold every time he heals people.

My character is a changeling who was adopted by humans and then ran out of his city after he fell in love with the mayor’s daughter and told her his secret. He’s overly friendly because he’s terrified of being alone but he also believes the people who called him a monster. He fights at a range because if he drops to half health he has to make a concentration check to maintain his disguise and he’s oddly aggressive in combat for such a cheerful guy. He also loves making desserts for people.
That hiding a piece of yourself while acting like its all alright was a core theme for my first Homebrew race an OC
they exploit people under false context they act super innocent like there child body or play into how adult they truly are but forgo themselves as a person
which makes NPC options go dummy crazy
I think I get the cooking analogy. If I come in with a character that's Tikka Masala and you're making Garlic Bread, they still work great together with some adjustments, like I might bring down the spice level so the party can enjoy it, while you might make Garlic Naan to help mesh with the character at the table
As a DM, I put thought into the lives of key NPCs in my settings, just enough so that I have an idea of what sort of person they are. If the party decides to befriend them, I develop them a bit more. For a rare few, I get to give them their own short story.
Good video, I have a character concept already I just don’t have a group yet. My character is basically an Aasimar born to a human society. Her older brother who is also an Aasimar serves as competition for her. Think of it like a Thor and Loki marvel situation. Both are great but her brother takes advantage of his age and quickly latches onto certain concepts before her. Her admiration slowly over time turned into Envy and she slowly feels inferior. The truth is her brother does this because he wants her to have a normal life and not be the spotlight all the time. I haven’t made the part of when or how she leaves because I don’t have a group yet but I am excited for when I get to play her.

my wife and best friend are really good at roleplaying and acting so they tend to be the "main characters" when we play dnd. I have a harder time being the interesting character that gets the spotlight. I tend to be the side character that lowkey carries the party in niche areas ( i like building characters that are good at a specific thing). This video helped me a lot to help make a character that makes roleplaying and acting much easier as I have a difficult time fully " becoming" my character.
Thank you, Jay, that head chef analogy toward the end basically explains how I viewed my "job" as GM in the role of character creation in a more concise manner than I could have put into words :P
I had a character I made that was a Skeleton who was kept alive using a Magic item, specifically a necklace. He pretends to be a normal person but it absolutely terrified of dispell magic because he is not sure what it will do to him and he loves being “alive”. He ends up leading this almost Robin Hood like group of bandits that try to help out people of less wealthy towns in exchange for shelter. Most of his “bandits” are aware of what he is but he’s such a good guy that they don’t care at this point.

Usually i pick a part of my personality and turn it up to eleven when i make a new character, some examples of this are:
Braddley Dough, the half orc fighter from a family of great bakers. With his greatest flaw being racism and stupidity. He treats mages and any arcane user as a different and inferior species.
Percival Tatsu-Tengu Nephele Richarles Mc.Condor, the Air Genasi Bard with greek ancestry and a nudist tendency. He's also a rich noble from a toxic family household, his mom was the only one that supported his artistic talents, after she passed away, he fell for all the lustfull things in life: Women, men, alcohol, parties, etc...
These two are my favorites, but there's a thousand ways for you to try and do the same

My most recent character is a shade, a being who exists between life and death through their own willpower. Her physical form is just a manifestation of her memories of her past life as a high elf. Her class is a special rogue that can use radiant energy like a cleric for their sneak attack. Think of them as an agent of a church that has to deal with dirty situations of the criminal element. She has taken up a level in cleric for her devotion to Corelion. But I want her to open up more and form connections better with others.
My character is a lightfoot halfling fighter/rogue who survives by robbing rich noble’s graves for valuables. His family were the hamlet’s morticians and he’s very different from what you’d expect from a halfling, normally they’re really sociable and friendly but my character is more rough around the edges. He’s quiet and broody. He does have a dumber and wilder side to him but he doesn’t show it if he can help it. His family and entire hamlet was brutally murdered by a half Dragonborn half Hobgoblin named Ra’Gulg the Butcher. He’s one of those bloodthirsty bandit chief types who literally just wanted to kill my character’s village because he stumbled on them accidentally. Ra’Gulg has lightning magic alongside being a monk and ended up scarring my character’s eye permanently. I basically made him a Sasuke type wanting revenge but an unconventional one since his race is seen as the nice and merciful type so he’s often underestimated and made fun of which leads to his wilder moments. He has anger issues unbecoming of a Halfling as well as a Wolverine level of potty mouth so he’s pretty funny when he gets mad. He’s a bit weird though, being from a family that specializes in preparing dead bodies so he’s very morbid but knowledgeable about death and his ultimate goal is to learn necromancy in order to revive his dead hamlet to help take part in his revenge on Ra’Gulg. He basically wants the zombified remains of his people to rip the dude apart. But since he has no aptitude for magic or at the very least he doesn’t believe he does so he basically has a spell book he stole from a dead necromancer’s grave that he can’t do anything with at the moment. I haven’t got a chance to fully play out his story since it’s hard to find good groups but I keep hoping one day I’ll be able to play with people so my character can finally get his revenge 😂

So my current character Todoh at the beginning of the campaign I only gave them 1 goal: To Make Friends.
They are the shadow of a paladin of Helm who took what he saw as darkness inside himself and separated it from himself making a shadow. Helm and the Raven Queen gave life and well Helm did this so Todoh could try to steer him back to the light and accept the things the paladin didn't like about himself. All that is what Todoh recent learned.
What is so great about this is that their original goal is that now that they have it, they now have something to lose. The more friends they make the more people they feel responsible for protecting. This is a constant struggle because todoh believes they are expendable if it keeps their friends safe. They have to learn to not jump in front of every danger that comes their way.
Character concept: a world famous garlic bread chef who gets bitten by a vampire
A great example of goku still being empathetic even in the most serious of scenarios is when he continues to fight moro, he sees this guy with such incredible power but once he realizes their massive gap in actual fighting skill he crouches down in front of him and just asks "have you ever trained?"

i notice that i enjoy very wildly different characters. i am in love with the drab/abrasive tactical mastermind such as General Tullius or Makoto Nijiima, but i also love characters that are categorically silly like Denji, i also deeply desire a more feminine character but often have trouble getting that across. i also tend to have characters' turning moments be "lock in" more so than traumatizing
I have some bad news about General Tullius. He died. Every single time I played the game.

I character idea I'm messing around with is a Paladin, Oath of Conquest, who's desire for supremacy and revolution conflicts with a kinder, compassionate soul within him. How does one balance dominance and bloodlust with a disdain for oppression and abuse of power? If he topples those in power, is he any better?

I so many character like but my core resicipy is undergod plus hardship plus one element that brake the normal mold is a winner. My latest NPC is for a Halloween Dragonlance or Ravenloft Dungoncraft modual. If you dont know what that is it is how new moduals are made for Adventure League events. But the NPC is named Nibbles and he wants you to stop the Sisterhood of Morgane from doing the ritual of rejuvinations which will cause the candy of the Night of the Black Rose festival to spead a plague that kids of the city you are in. If you question Nibbles more you figure out the Kinder is also a vampire. He was named Nibbles because he is so small and his appitite is so little to drain a medium size humanoid he would have to Nibble at them for days. He is freindly and nice but I would not call him good because the main reason he is doing this is because the ritual made the city a bad hunting area for a decade after.

You've probably had this requested before, but (as a gamer) I would love it if you could do a character study/deconstruction on some of the characters from the Horizon game franchise. Kotollo, Aloy, Edend... I love these guys and I'd love to see your opinions on any of them. Seriously, HZD/HFW have cool stories and great characters. My dad and I have been deconstructing the Tenakth as a whole (it started as a funny little comment under The Game Theorists and it's up to *9 pages* at the time this comment is written) and it's been.. eye opening. Seriously, I think these guys should have a little attention brought to them. Love your videos!
