I used to watch because I was interested in old guitars. Now it’s to hear Lemmo play. And today his playing was spectacular!
Same here!
Huge Van Halen fan here. That slow "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" groove was beautiful!
I want to hear a full version with vocals now
was that the first one?
@@connorfischer3283 it was the 3rd one

Ah, memories. Xmas 1967 I got my very first guitar, a 1960s straight from the catalogue Sears and Roebuck Silvertone acoustic. It was a POS guitar that I thought was great and which I enthusiastically played until I figured out House of the Rising Sun. I remember a few of my friends and I formed a band that lasted well into the first rehearsal session before breaking up. And then? The guitar became a forgotten relic. Probably worth a penny or two today. And I eventually got around to picking up the guitar again....50 years later. Thanks for the trip down nostalgia alley. Cheers....
You guys should have a reunion gig.
Lemmo Lemmo Lemmo that was killer.... I love when you let the looper run out while you do the outro. Such a phenomenal player. This just inspired the hell out of me! Keep picking, would love to have that thing😎
i feel like we should all be paying something to watch and listen, pretty phenomenal
Dec Romweber of Flat Duo Jets. IMO he was the most important guitarist who played one of these. Absolute legend
Love flat duo jets. Dex is as cool as they come
A true American icon.
Damn that was one of the best gotd’s ever... Go Lemmo!!!
Pretty impressed with Lemmo. Ive been watching a while and his playing gets better and better. That loop at the end was really nice. Would like to hear him do this with his gear once instead of the shop set up just to see what he dials up .
Wow, once again your soulful playing has blown me away! Bravo, Michael!!
as a kid you could get one of these with a amp in a case form sears for $69 and they were great, we would play gigs with them perfect for a 11 year old kid
Yeah. You can see that case in the pizza place scene in That Thing You Do.
@@clarencevickrot3531 Close. Lenny's playing the "1457" sister model with 2 pickups, a longer scale length (25", this black one's 23.5",) and a red burst finish. Same body shape as this 1448, though.
Yet another groove I’m gonna try and replicate lol Lemmo you’re a huge inspiration my man🤘🏼
Lemmo, fantastic interpretation of Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love. Keep on rockin'! 🤘🎸
not one mention that Silvertone guitars were made for Sears by Danelectro; this sounds great; I have 3 lipstick pickups in my Strat, love ‘em
A Surfcaster! 😁 Nice! 🎸 Did it come with lipstick pups or you modded it?
FYI Mike mentioned toward the beginning of the demo that those guitars could be bought at Sears.
Todd Roy yeah but my point is that Danelectro, a cool New Jersey based guitar manufacturer from the ‘50s & ‘60s, made the Silvertones; ‘Danos’ were known for their lipstick pickups
David Kastin a buddy of mine & I built it with the lipsticks; sounds like a good recording of a Strat!
True, this one is Danelectro, and it sounds fantastic at a budget price. However, Silvertones were made by several companies in the 60s. In the 60s, you could buy Silvertones made by either Danelectro, Kay, or Harmony. They're all "cheap sounding," but in their own unique and good ways.
I bought mine in the late 70s in a Fayetteville, NC Pawn shop for $13. Played great. Traded it in for $75 a few years later. I knew it was a great guitar - one I wish I had kept.
I literally ordered this guitar from a local shop right when I heard that first and last riff loop. I knew this thing was going to be unique regardless of all the people saying it’s cheap or trash. I know that it depends mostly on the player but I did listen to a lot of your great demos and this is still my favorite tone so far.
That version of Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love sounded like Neil Young in a way! Awesome
I believe Daniel Rossen, from Grizzly Bear, plays one of these during live performances.

@@101Volts the GOTD Cancelled is one of my grail guitars
@Spiral Architect I don't believe so.
I bought this guitar with the amp in the case in 2005. It was in a shop in Blue Ridge, GA. I only paid $100. Non polarized plug will shock you in to playing some blues. The fuse lit up in the case amp though. I’ll never forget that sound with the lipstick pickup and the amp buzzzzzzz.
That was the coolest interpretation of Van Halen
that thing is beautiful. I remember being amazed at that amp-case thing back in the day
The pick guard is Masonite. 1448 AMP IN CASE MINE IS 3 Rd 5:09 WEEK Of Dec 1962. Yours is later model. Sound effect comes with 1449 or 1457 amp case. 2 input jacks
I’ve got this same model, with the amp-in-case, along with its longer scale red sparkle sibling…also with an amp-in-case. Both are great players.
Danelectros (this one was sold by Sears using their Silvertone brand) were made with inexpensive components but the quality of manufacture was really good. Once you figure out the neck tilt adjuster you can set ‘em up to play super fast and easy.
I swear lemmo is the best guitar teacher. I freaking love this guy.
My dad bought me one of those brand new from Sears!
Very cool, my brother just gave me his old Silvertone. It needs a bit of cleaning but other than that it’s in good condition. I can’t wait to string it up and try it out.
I had one of these about 15 or 20 years ago. Fun little guitar. I bought it for $100 with no case back then.
That was incredibly soothing. Like ASMR guitar. Just relaxing, which is always something people don’t get enough time for in daily life. I was reminded of the 90’s guitar mags talking about “texture” guitar the whole time I listened to that awesomeness. Probably just me, but it made me think of that. Thanks again for the tremendous playing through a really unique classic instrument.
I love these guitars
I own two of them
I have the U1 and a DC59. Sweet necks make sweet sounds.
I believe that Brad Paisley had that guitar when he started playing ,,, but .... I could be wrong ... p.s. Michael could make a broom sound awesome .... very cool playing buddy ,,
Damn that sounded sweet, Mike!
If I was half the player you are, I`d be the happiest dude in town.
You have a scary ability to make every instrument that finds itself in your hands, to sound it`s very best, it seems. It`s always so good. You`re sure you never went to the crossroads?
one of the few guitarist on youtube that actually plays MUSIC when demoing a guitar...
I would expect such aj inventive playing from John Frusciante and here you go Lemmo thx
I was hoping he'd play some frusciante on this thing lol
thank you Mike and Jen.
I have two reissues:one made in China, one from Korea. The Korean is a single pickup and sounds so sweet after you mangle/manage the wooden bridge. UFO sounds with a little fuzz added. Thanks Lemmo for the demo!
This kinda reminds me of the old Lemmo’s Demos days!
very cool tone , bigger bottom end than I expected but very warm and mellow for a short scale , and the sparkle is a real bonus , black is my favorrite guitar color , just badass , those lipstick p/u's are really nice , I'd like to find one of those for my silvertone , very cool , thanks guys
Michael with a guitar in his hands: "Yeah, so this is one of my favourite guitars of all time"
..aha, just heard that Lemmo went to Berklee in his own words!..not surprised, anyone who passed through there is very lucky and I’m glad I did too..shout out to Lemmo and Norman’s Rare Guitars!..September 2, 2020 New York..
Fantastic wacky Wednesday Michael and Jen, thank you, Jeff in LA USA
That was my very first electric guitar. I wish I had been good enough to sound like that when I plucked and strummed back then.
I had one of those in the 80's with 2 pickups and the amp case it screemed
Amazing guitar with real warmth and great playing as always lemmo
Dude that was very awesome 👌
My cousin had one of these with the amp in the case when we started playing electric in 1964. (We’d started on acoustics a couple of years earlier.) I always wondered why that Silvertone/Danelectro played and sounded better than my St. George-branded two-pickup Teisco!
This is a blues machine too, would've like to have seen a demo that demonstrates the raw and gutsy tone these guitars can produce.
Great demo LEMMO! 🎶🎵😏
Not sure if I keep coming back for the old guitars or to listen to Michaels playing... probably both.👍🏻
Aren't these a 23.5" Scale? And yeah, here's Dexter Romweber's (of the Flat Duo Jets) Guitar. He ripped on it with his 50s to early 60s Rock & Roll type songs. Ricky H. Wilson (B-52s) also owned one, but he was more known to play his Mosrite guitars.
Cool axe and awesome playing Lemmo ! Thanks Jen ! 😎🎸🎶🤘
My compliments to a well deserved guitar. I had one and I seem to remember 2 pickups. I could be wrong. The twin reverb is sweet as ever. A great amp.
Awesome job Lemmo! Great tunes, great playing 👍👏
great guitarist this guy,,got flash and soul ,,,just how i like it
Yeah
It was also the guitar of army brats. Every Xmas a dog eared copy of Sears was passed around the house and the guitar page was wore out. But aren’t the Danelectro? Or Harmony?
Do you make up what you play in this video or is it an actual song? it’s very nice.
GOTD and Affordable Favorites in one episode!
How much is it??
Probably $10k
Googled it around the $4,000 neighborhood.
Michael Gallagher good one! 😂 $500 all day long on Reverb with the crappy amp case.
@@jjulch .... Didn't proof read myself, hit one too many zeros. 🤪
Nothing like a sparkly guitar! Nice playing too! However! Gotta do a Maton!
First .... someone has to be foolish enough to trade one in
@@zankyalbo2208 true but we all know there are some foolish fools out there!
I too would like to hear a Maton. Saw Tommy Emanuel playing one sounded great.
Mesmeric Michael, thanks
I had a Danelectro U1 with 1 pickup. I always thought it was cheap. It left my hands in 1969 when I had to lose guitars to get the next one. I'd love to have it again.
In the hands of a master, the old beat fiddle sounds like a Stradivarius!
Oh My God!
Mine was like playing a tree branch...zero action. But wait, I was only 10 yrs old. Lemmo The Looper!
amazing sounds....thanks michael
Basically the Sears name on a Danelectro… look at the tail piece/bridge… tape binding, knobs, pickup , it’s a Dano!
They're also cheap to buy, even in good shape, considering it's a 55+ year old guitar. Sure, it's made with a poplar neck and a pine body that's chambered, but this beast is a good one, Just be wary to not put strings on it that are too thick at too high of a tuning, because these have no adjustable truss rod. They have a metal rod in them that holds the neck down good, but these aren't the best for thick strings unless you tune down.
It's an interesting story about the Guitar but it couldn't be worth much,Michael still is always good to watch, you never know what's going to come out of him.Love to know Norms price on it
Another Lemmo Chronical!!!
Had one in the case amp, punch holes in speaker and placed paper clips for fuzz. I think it was $42 at Sears.
A friend of my dads had 1of these wth the case that also had an amp built in . Had those cool lipstick pups . And i got to play it somtimes , that was the best part .
If anyone here wants to buy one of these, try it first. I like mine, but these aren't your typical Fender type of guitar; they're a bit finicky, but IMHO, they're fun and worth the time.
That said; they do _not_ have adjustable truss rods, so that might limit your ability to choose thicker strings a bit. The headstock's the worst thing I've seen for tuning stability in my whole life, the tailpiece is cheap and I dislike the saddle on it, but I still wouldn't go much farther than how it is in stock form; I just want to take a new saddle, and cut it up so I can intonate the strings. Oh, and put a wedge of wood under the bridge to stop the bridge from collapsing.
I don't have a pickup in mine yet (I bought it in rough but solid condition, in pieces,) so I can't comment on its electric tone. I love thin strings in it, though, since they sound like a rubber band guitar; that's perfection for what this guitar was sold for, but I mean that in a complimentary way.
That outro!
:D
Love to see this in my feed!!
i have one with the case .....pretty cool
You The Man Lemmo!
Nice playing as always, Lemmo!
does anyone know the first song lemmo played?
Mannnnn what I’d give to learn from him.
First selection was by Micheal Jackson, correct? I can’t recall the song’s name, but it sure sounded great on that
guitar and in Lemmo’s hands. Great improv, beautiful and melodic.
yes it sound like Why of M.J. to me too!
I've always liked the way silvertones sound, never played one
Very cool little guitars.
Cool tone
That was an awesome Van Halen cover.
i could have listened to that van halen melody until my ears fell off.
or until i didn't have to wear a mask in public anymore..
Agree with a bunch of these comments. Awesome sounding guitar. Best GOTD in a while
good god, that first tune had some Kayleigh from Merillion in it. 'course I'm just nostalgic. Lemmo is the man.
What was the first song lemmo plays? Sounds to me like human nature from Michael Jackson
Was wondering the same thing
that first jam was so good... i also need to know what song that was
That was my first guitar when I was a kid. The amp case would cause electrical shocks when playing.
Never mind the reverb on your petal board. Crank the fender reverb on the amp
Way back in 1964 my Grandmother took me to Little Rock University to the Jazz Club and the Teacher played That Guitar, but Red Colour. I had a ES 330 and he was almost as good as Tulsa Player Tommy Crook one of the best living guitar players. Chet Atkins once called Mr. Crook the best guitar player he knew, on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, no less
Hi!great sounding..I’m a fun of old silvertone’s tone and I’m choosing between 1448 and 1457 (that you played I know ;) wich one you prefer/suggest?cheers
These should be issued to the ISS to groove out stellar nights, galactic days...
What’s this first tune? I’m hooked
If Van Halen had been a 60's psychedelic band, that's what ain't talking 'bout love would've sounded like...love when Lemmo does reinterpretations like that!
5:15 I almost hear "And the wind cries, 'Mary.'"
LOV U MAN
I have one of those with the amp in case it is a pretty cool guitar the one I have was made may of 1962
I own one... wonderful guitar 🎸🎸...I may have to sell😔😔
That is one amazing looking guitar it would have been right at home on the original Star Trek as a Vulcan guitar that Spock would play (rather than the lyre that he had). Love how the tuning pegs are all on one side of the headstock like a Fender.
Was there another guitar from Sears that sounded as good as this? Reminds me of Jack White’s Montgomery Ward Airline plastic guitar except better. I wonder how this would sound with some distortion or overdrive.
The problem was that kids would get their Silvertone guitars home and they wouldn’t be set up correctly, so they generally had high string action and poor intonation. Not to mention the fact that the amp in the case sounded like it was under water. Judging from the photos in the booklets accompanying the “Back From the Grave” series, however, Silvertone amplifiers were a garage-band favorite in the 60s.
This guitar sounds best (imo) when playing blues with a shit tonne of distortion. Check out Flat Duo Jets
Nice!
I don't miss Agnesi at all!!!
