In this video tutorial, Dubspot Intructor Mike Henderson a.k.a DJ Endo explores the creative possibilities of the F1 and new features in the updated Traktor software.
Native Instruments has changed the DJ Game once again with Traktor 2.5 and their brand new controller, the Traktor Kontrol F1.
In past versions of Traktor you could use the sample decks to create and play one shots and loops in Traktor's dedicated sample decks. Now in Traktor 2.5, you can take playing and creating samples to a whole new level with Traktor's brand new Remix Decks.
The Traktor Kontrol F1 controller was made to have total control over Traktor's remix decks. Whether you're a producer looking for new ways to play your tracks and stems live, or if you're a loopoholic DJ who likes to cut the best parts out of their tracks and remix them live, or a turntablist who wants to trigger and scratch their samples live, the F1 is ready to meet all of your needs. The controller itself is the same size as the Traktor Kontrol X1 and will make for a nice add on controller in your DJ setup.
The new Remix Decks in Traktor 2.5 allow you to store up to 64 samples, whether they are Loops, One shots or even whole tracks into one deck! To take things even further, you can now save what are called "Remix Sets" so you can quickly and easily save and recall your groups of samples. You can also obtain or buy Remix Sets to add to your DJ arsenal.

Yeah 2020 and I’ve finally got one and this is by far the best video to help with the hardware.
me too
I bought this back in 2013. Nice hardware. I was wondering if I can just play around using the f1 only solo without the controller
Same, just grabbed the s4 mk3 also 👊
Thank you! 🙏
im finding the pads so resistant like tough to push down compared to say the Korg nanocontrol etc. is this normal?? i got 2 on ebay want to resell them
You are an amazing teacher!! And I rewarded myself getting F1 after putting in enough hours practice. For anyone considering this is SO worth the investment, changes everything ;-)
Glad you like, and thanks for watching!
Glad you like the video. More coming soon!
the best tutorial i saw. Everybody just show their own remix sounds... and what we want to know is how to control F1! Thanks a lot!
Thank you, and I'm glad you liked the video!
This video is the best and clear one i have seen of Kontrol F1. You should make the official video tutorials for NI.
The best video on this device by far, many thanks.
Yes you can combine all of your gear. The setup and configuration will be different depending on what soundcard / mixer you use but you can control decks a + b with the midi controller, deck C can be maschine and Deck D can be the F1. You would just have to configure your audio outputs. Remember you can share the same audio output with 2 or more decks if you need to (example - sharing maschine and the F1 onto one channel, or even sharing both w/ a deck channel if you have 2 channel mixer)
Traktor is a beast. It really boils down to the level of skill the user has
Thank you Endo, I appreciate the feedback and keep the videos coming!
LOVE IT!!! I HAVE AN S4 AND JUST GOT MY F1 !!! my son actually put me on to you guys he takes classes @ Dubspot in N.Y. I live in Miami though and their's just a hand full of us that have this down here can't wait to rock the F1 on my next Gig ..Thanks for the tutorial :)
Very Nice Tutorial and i admire all of you people that can understand all this technical stuff...i'm old school and have a hard time with computers etc... so i will stick with my CDJ 1000 MK3's and my Mighty Hand Made E&S DJR 400 Analog Rotary Mixer !! Cheers
DEFINITELY plan on getting this to pair with my S2. Looks like it really completes the setup and gives so much more versatility than with the S4 alone.
Professional DJ, Producer, reviewer, teacher and a nice man! Very nice review!
12 Years later - literally nothing has changed with the Remix Decks, and this video is still relevant. You're welcome! Haha! I just wish I got more in depth on how to capture samples. It's the only thing I didn't cover. :)
Hey @deejayendo could you explain - respectively does someone know how to „simple“ (not via keyboard) delete just a single sample?
You the man, Endo. Thanks for all your comprehensive walk-throughs.
We are working on getting F1's for all of the stations at Dubspot and will be incorporating it into our class as soon as we get them!
Why would you want to go to another DJ school? Dubspot is the best in the world! :-)
Oh now your showing of Endo, just watched the whole video of the chain bro.... Think i'm going to start saving my best samples per track in each slot like you have, nice one
Astonished Mike!
You show the real F1 & Remix Decks potential, great job.
You do not need a 4 channel mixer to use the Remix Decks, in fact in preferences - output routing you can COMBINE multiple decks onto one channel. So you can combine the Remix Deck (C) onto the same channel as track Deck A and the Remix Deck (D) on the same channel as track Deck B.
The first video I've found which actually shows you what to do. ty DJ Endo..
Endo was a bit tired, love these tutorials, i think you to be a geek these days to be a good DJ/Controllerist
Being a geek doesn't make you a good DJ. What makes you a good DJ is being able to play good tunes, tell a good story, educate your audience, rock a party and do it skillfully and with class. All this controllerism, Remix Decks and crazy stuff you can do on top of just mixing is icing on the cake.
You can actually capture loops from your own music for using in the Remix Decks. Try taking a track, loading it into a deck, set a loop in the deck, then click and drag on the decks header (where the track title is displayed) and drag the deck down to a remix deck slot. Traktor will take the loop and copy it into the remix deck slot. Once the sample has played 3 times in the remix deck, that loop will be saved to your all samples folder and you can use it at any time.
Totally subscribed now....I think that it is a MUST for every DJ...D.J Endo should be working on Apple's tutorials !!
Yes absolutely. This will give you FULL control over the remix decks and every single feature in the Remix Decks. The S4 / S2 are limited as to how much control you have over the Remix Decks. The F1 would make a good add on to your S2/S4 setup.
Hey man, great question. The way to do this is you can right click (or ctrl click on mac) on a single file or a selected list of files in the explorer (in Traktor) and choose "Import to collection" - arrow over to where it says "Import as Looped Sample" and this will make all of your samples loops and should save the info to the file as well if you load it later on in the explorer.
I made those samples myself by making a loop in a deck with a track, then clicking and dragging the deck header into a remix deck cell and playing it 3 times. Once you play the loop 3 times in the remix deck cell it will save automatically to your all samples folder. This folder can be accessed by double clicking on the track collection.
THANKS! nice to see people on the internet helping others!
OMG DJ Endo u don't stop giving well done that man, yuou must know you keeping giving and it comes back to you, great video just got my two and got a bit stuck this video helps. My Podcast is of the chain now, I will email you links via Facebook this weekend once I have done my 1st F1 Mix!! Will check back in 24hrs...
Yes, if you hold shift and push the Browse button the F1 will go into MIDI mode where you can MIDI map any of the buttons or faders to control any software parameters in whatever program you're using.
I use the Traktor F1 cases to elevate my F1's. They work like a charm.
The default Traktor key commands come with some functions for the remix decks, but if you really want to get geeky, try making your own key commands for the rmx decks. This is a great way to learn Traktor under the hood. Go to preferences, controller manager and this is where you can add / delete / edit your midi mappings and keyboard mappings. maybe try deleting traktor's keyboard mapping and creating a new generic keyboard device. Then go through the menus and figure out what each command does
that's next level 😄
The way I did my custom F1 mapping is I colored all of the LED's in the controller editor application (applications / native instruments / controller editor). In this app you can choose what color each pad is in the off state and on state by double clicking the pad, choosing the "assign" tab, choose LED on "For Midi In", and choose Mode "Gate", Type "Note" and then select Color Mode "Dual" and set the Color On and Color off to whatever color you would like. Then in Traktor you would map LED out
You can turn key lock on by hovering your mouse over the three yellow lines above the waveform. The Music Note icon is Key Lock. Also you can turn on Key Lock on the F1 hardware by holding Shift and turning on the pads in the Keylock column
Hey man thanks for the tutorial 👌 you and Dubspot do a terrific job!
Thank you!
just got my F1 in the mail. cant wait to plug her in tonight
Yes, you can switch between controlling the remix decks by holding Shift and turning the browse knob. This will switch between controlling decks C & D (for example). You can use one controller for all 4 remix decks.
Excellent tutorial...'bout to add this F1 to my set while it's on sale. And Keep it Creative!!
If sync is on in the Remix deck it will sync to whatever is the master tempo (whether it be a track deck in auto mode, or the master clock if master clock is the master, or whatever deck is selected as the master clock in manual mode). The way to get it to sync perfectly is by making sure the beatgrids are correct for the track your sampling before sampling it. You can slow down the deck by either slowing down the master clock (deck or clock) or by turning sync off and moving the tempo fader
Yes if you follow this video you should be able to pick it up quickly. It makes a nice add on to the DDJ Ergo and will work just fine with it.
superb tutorial on my way to pick my s4 and f1 up now !! im sure im going to be checking out more of your videos, thanks again
To make a sample using the Remix Decks, make a loop in a track deck, then click on the decks header (the top section of the deck, the grey area always works best) and drag that to a Remix Deck Slot. Hit play on the remix deck slot and let it play 3 times. After playing 3 times it will save the sample to your all samples folder.
I just bought both over the summer, Midi fighter first, then the F1 a month ago. I would suggest getting the F1 first!
Yes you can download the Traktor Remix Deck content via the Service Center (in your applications - Native Instruments folder). There are about 20 different Remix Sets you can download and play around with. Soon Producers will begin to sell their tracks as Remix Sets which you can buy or download, and Sample companies will also do the same and sell Remix Sets which you can buy online. You will just have to wait a bit. The revolution is only just beginning!
All you have to do is plug in your F1 and set a deck to be a remix deck and your ready to go! Traktor is fully modular so you can add as many controllers as you'd like. I personally use 3x CDJ 2000's in Advanced HID Mode, DJM 900 as my mixer / soundcard, and Maschine and F1 as my MIDI controllers. It works like a charm!
As a beginning DJ, I would actually go with the S4. This way, you can do all of the basics + when your ready to move up to more advanced things you will have everything you need. You'll never get bored! Also the new S4 just came out which let's you hook up your iPhone or iPad to it and control Traktor DJ with the S4. Be sure to check out my other tutorial on the Traktor S4 on the Dubspot Blog.
Thank you, thank you, thank you very much, you made it look so simple compared to the manual.
great video. You really made it easy. Made so much more sense after watching this 20 min video! Great job and thank you!
Yes it will work with the Denon mc6000. For those of you asking "will it work with...." the answer is "yes, as long as the controller or soundcard works with Traktor the F1 will work with it as an add on to your setup".
Yes the F1 makes a nice add on controller to whatever setup you have. Traktor is fully modular meaning you can use as many controllers as your computer has usb ports :)
Yes, you can use the F1 in conjunction with any controller or soundcard. It acts as an add on to your current DJ setup.
Spectacular review...was thinking about buying this and this video convinced me
You can sync Logic to Traktor and use your logic VST's with Traktor if you really want to. You can use any sound that you'd like in the remix deck.
Dubspot will be adding the Kontrol F1 to our in class curriculum soon!
Thank you Mike for the tutorial on the NI F1.
i am a old skool dj .& a aging teenager of 48 years way back in the late 80's early 90's dj's had a choice of techinic decks imho well over priced or citronic dj coffin box kits or alike & the choice of dj mixer to buy had no FX triggers & if you wanted equalizer pots you were paying about £199+ & over priced mixers @ £250 ish would have analog 3 second poor quality sampler built in.respect to native instruments for evolving in the name of mp3 dj's
one the best tuto i saw, everithing's dicribe and easily understanding, and i saw a lot of tuto, this one is the best! and combinated with some tips from dj techtools, your remix decks can be use to compose
DThanks a lot, regards
Thank you!
SOOOO so clear! Amazing tutorial. i am now 100% getting this product. THANKYOU. :D
Heya Mike.
I wasn't sure which one to get next to my Hercules DJ Console 4-MX mixer.
I was in doubt between the X1 and the F1.
Now I know which one it'll be. The F1 :D (somewhere in August or so).
Thanks for the kick ass tutorial !
Yes to change the loop to a one shot without the controller open the advanced panel by clicking the arrow under the "Active" button. Then where you see the loop icon, click on that and it will change to a one shot icon. Keep in mind this will only change it to a one shot in that particular deck, and won't change it to a one shot permanently. If you want to permanently change it to a one shot, ctrl click on the track in the browser and choose "Set Type to One Shot Sample"
One way is by ctrl - clicking on the sample in the browser by going to "All Samples", find the sample, ctrl click on it and choose the option "Set type to one shot sample". If your only trying to change it to a one shot in a specific remix deck, click on the name of the sample (in the remix deck slot), open the advanced panel by clicking the black arrow under the "active button" in the deck, and click on the loop icon in the advanced panel and change it to an arrow (one shot)
Awesome video. Thank you. I was wondering if I should buy and F1 and now I'm just bursting with ideas on how to use it. =)
The all samples folder is located under Track collection - All samples. Make sure you're on the latest version of Traktor Pro.
Yes you can use Traktor 2.5 with the S2. Not only is it compatible, but the S2 has a knob in the center for the Remix Decks (or whatever you have playing through decks C&D) so you can use the F1 as an add on to the S2.
Double click on the deck header to expand the decks and show the full view of the Remix Decks. You also want to be on the latest version of Traktor Pro, since the software that came with the S4 originally only has sample decks, not remix decks.
All of those samples I made using the sample decks in Traktor 2.1.2 / 2.1.3 using the tracks in my personal collection, but you can make your own home made samples using the F1's "Capture" feature, or by setting a loop in a beatgridded track and then clicking on the deck header and dragging it into a slot in the remix deck. After the sample plays 3 times it will show up in your all samples folder.
Thank's for this demo dude !
Thanks for tuning in!
AWESOME!!!!! Best Tutorial so far. Hans down. Thx
Thanks, Walter! Much respect.
Thanks, I learned a few things I didn't see anywhere yet!!!
I make my samples by dragging a loop from a track to a remix Deck cell and playing it 3 times. Once you play a loop 3 times in a remix deck cell, it is saved automatically. Have fun!
Go into settings and "Layout Manager" and the view that is shown is "browse", there is also a drop down menu on the top right of traktor that lets you select different views. They can be customised by double clickin the dex etc. Just play about with it. Also space bar is usually the "HOt Key", for quickly jumpin between browse mode and the mixing mode
When you switch a Remix Deck to a track deck, it will clear the remix deck in the background. This is probably good because it saves your CPU load. If you want to load the remix deck back, just drag and drop it into the deck when you change the deck back to a remix deck. Your other option is to just combine the remix decks onto the same channel as a track deck in the output routing. Also there's an option to autosave changes you make to a remix deck automatically in the preferences.
Thanks bruv your tutorials are spot on love DubSpot
Thanks for watching, Mark!
To delete one of the Remix Sets, you can 1) find it on your hard drive and just delete it before importing it into Traktor or 2) in Traktor ctrl click (or right click on windows) on the Remix set in the "All Remix Sets" folder and choose "show in finder" then drag the file to the trash. After doing that you can delete it from the collection by right clicking on the Remix Set in the all Remix Sets folder and choose "Delete from Collection"
Great overview and tutorial. Best on the web. Thanks.
yup about to get this. traktor for life!
Yes you can use the Kontrol F1 as an add on to the Behringer CMD Studio 4a or any other all in one DJ controller like the Traktor Kontrol S4 or anything else of that nature. Its good to think of the F1 as an ADD ON to your DJ setup.
There's so many different options you can do as far as setup goes depending on if your using an external mixer or Traktors internal mixer. I would personally suggest getting an audio 6 or 10 and also getting the X1 (for DJing) and F1 for using with the Remix Decks. Or you can get the S2 or S4 as your mixer / soundcard and F1 for controlling the Remix Decks.
If you want to use the F1 with the S4, you'll need 2 usb ports. Plug the S4 into the first USB port and the F1 into the second USB port. The S4 has its own mixer built in which controls Traktor's internal mixer.
just got one.Looks really adaptable. Thanks for the vid.
Great tutorial Endo!
When can we expect tutorials on the Track Overlay functions? No one seems to have any videos out there yet or talk about it.
You should check out my other video on how to set beatgrids in Traktor. This will help you get the acapella to match up to a metronome and it will then sync properly with your other tracks. Beatgrids are the backbone of Traktor, especially when it comes to the Remix Decks and capturing samples.
Traktor comes with over 20 remix sets that you can download using the Native Instruments service center, located in applications / native instruments / service center. Enjoy!
To add to this, you also have a knob on the S2 that controls the volume of the remix decks (Decks C & D) on top of the other two channels (Deck A & B).
Yeah you can map the F1 knobs and buttons to control anything in Traktor in User Mode (including effects). Also you can send out color coded LED feedback for the pads!!
The best way is to 1) Beatgrid the track so the metronome matches the beats of the track. See my beatgridding video on the Dubspot channel for more info on how to do this. 2) Set a loop in the track 3) Click on the Deck Header and drag it to a remix slot. The other way to do it with the controller is: 1) click and hold the capture button 2) Select the deck by turning the encoder 3) click on the pad you want to save the sample to. Like Magic!
This thing is a BEAST!
Yes, if you hold shift and push the Browse button the F1 will go into MIDI mode where you can MIDI map any of the buttons or faders to control any software parameters in whatever program you're using. No hacking needed :)
Great job describing the new F1!
I wish there was video this detailed for the X1 mk2.
You can use timecode to control the remix decks if you have Traktor SCRATCH Pro. You will need a Traktor Scratch Certified soundcard such as the Traktor Audio 10/ Traktor Audio 6 / Pioneer DJM 900 or any other Traktor Scratch Certified Mixer listed on the Native Instruments website.
"the loop icons indicate..loops"... THAT.IS.THE BEST ADVICE IVE EVER HEARD!
THANK YOU MAN! GREAT TUTORIAL! THUMBS UP IF YOU WANT DJ ENDO FOR PRESIDENT!
Yes, please watch my other video I did on the Dubspot channel on the Traktor Preferences. Just do a google search for Traktor Preferences configuring layouts Endo, and the video should pop up in your search results.
the reason is because when you press shift play on the F1 its only stopping THAT CLIP in the remix decks. It doesn't stop the DECK itself. To stop the DECK you would want to push play / pause on whatever controller your using to control that deck, OR just click it with a mouse in the program.
Awesome! Can't wait!
Excellent walk-through, thanks a lot!
For your first DJ Device I would suggest getting the Traktor Kontrol S4.
For those of you having problems with CPU and audio dropouts in Traktor 2.5 here are a couple of things you can do to optimize Traktor 2.5. Turn "Enable Multicore Processing Support" OFF, Turn your Airport (Internet / Wifi) OFF, Turn Bluetooth OFF, Turn the FX Slots OFF for each Sample Slot in the Remix Decks, Delete any mappings that you are not using from the controller manager, and turn off key lock if you don't use it, in both the remix decks and track decks.
