  • Will sterling silver tarnish? In this video I answer this simple question, I will give you a brief understanding on the answer
    When you google search online, you might find the same answer, some people are saying yes it does tarnish while others are saying it does not tarnish.
    But since you are here, the short answer is YES, sterling silver does tarnish. Silver tarnish is a natural process that occurs on all sterling silver jewelry. Though some people think it’s a strong indication that the jewelry piece is fake, this is not 100% always the case.
    The thought that sterling silver tarnishes only occurs with silver jewelry made from low purity silver is not always correct. There are many reasons that can also contribute to the tarnishing of silver.
    You might buy from a high-end silver sterling jewelry company, and let me tell you, it will also tarnish. Brand name sterling silver, cannot hide from there solid sterling silver from tarnishing
    Here is a Polishing cloth you can buy on Amazon to help with tarnishing: amzn.to/3kVYUmZ

    When I started wearing silver chains as a kid, at first I was one who would clean em everyday, and try the most to keep from tarnishing. Eventually a jeweler told me to not be so uptight with the maintenance of the chain. He recommended quite the opposite, he recommended I sweat in it, wear it, and not even focus on keeping it clean. In other words this has been the secret for me to keeping my chains clean over the years. I cycle chains every couple years, and wear them 24/7/365, I work out, sweat, swim, sleep, shower in them and never had tarnishing issues.

    the reason why some .925 silver pieces tarnish more rapidly than others is based on whether the piece of jewelry has a rhodium coating or not. Rhodium is highly tarnish-resistant and will help silver jewelry keep its color longer.

      @@JesusIsELOHIMConnoisseur will take off the oxidation that is purposely put on some artisan-crafted & other jewelry like it. It is probably ok for your chains if you don't soak them in it. I used to use it but found if I used it too often or soaked things in it the silver would get pitted. I would recommend a "safe" silver jewelry cleaner or heavy duty polishing clothes. Connoisseur is ok for silverware, etc. (Broken down & pitted silver tarnishes faster.)

I keep seeing stuff that says not to wear it in pools because of the chlorine esp hot tubs because even more chlorine. Not to wear in ocean because the salt water and the salt in the atmosphere around the ocean..some say not to sleep with it because the box clasp can get messed up. I just got my boy and I new Miami cuban chains in 925 and wanted to wear them all the time. But because I seen that stuff I ordered us the same necklaces but in stainless steel that way we can wear them when we can't wear the 925. I sweat a lot in the summer too. Something people forget about is that everybody's body is different the silver up against your skin will react depending on what your body secretes.... I have seen people wear chains and it tarnishes in 2 days and I have seen others wear them for a month and nothing happened. The cleaner your diet the less crap your body will release. Even if the silver tarnishes you can clean it in less than 2 minutes and make it look new again.

      @Zombie Eric Harris I would never buy any type of jewelry off the internet. I have a connection at one of my local jewelry dealers. 7mm, 30 in sterling silver rope chain is what I bought. With silver as low as it is and people still try and sell fakes online. Be careful in future buys but I’ve briefly looked into the company yu speak of and they look decent. $650 is though? What’s it weigh?

    • @commonsense5489
      @commonsense5489 2 роки тому

      @Zombie Eric Harris when buying a chain or bracelet from a reputable dealer they usually go by length in inches and width in millimeters. It’s always good to know the weight to know if it’s hollow or not. Depends on dive but hollow chains could be heavy too just not close to a solid of the same size. For a first piece or a vein in general I would buy in person. Many jewelry stores have catalogs for stuff they don’t usually carry such as hefty chains and bracelets from everything between gold and tungsten. I would do some local window shopping and just ask questions ask if they can order something if they don’t have what you want.

    • @commonsense5489
      @commonsense5489 2 роки тому

      @Zombie Eric Harris yeah the website stuff looks really nice fr but it all looks over priced to me personally even with the crazy craftsmanship of some of their stuff it seems to be very inflated. I would suggest you look up the size and dimensions of the chain you like from the website into UA-cam and see if you can find a video with an exact weight. Might not give you the exact chain but for comparison you can figure the inflation for craftsmanship

    • @commonsense5489
      @commonsense5489 2 роки тому

      @Zombie Eric Harris that’s a decent size bracelet. That weight it sounds solid.

    • @commonsense5489
      @commonsense5489 2 роки тому +2

      @Zombie Eric Harris 15mm at 106 grams? That sounds a little shady. I would look around that’s a pretty high price. The bracelet itself is worth 1/3 of the actual price. Your paying2/3 more for craftsmanship. That’s a $433 up charge…

    The only downside to silver is that it tarnishes, but it’s an easy fix, especially if you know the baking soda and aluminum foil method, which, in fact, takes only the tarnish and plates it onto the aluminum, whereas jewelry cleaner solutions, and other methods takes silver off, as well as the tarnish. So with that the pro side of having silver jewelry is that it’s 92.5%, pure silver, whereas most gold chains are only 48%to 75% pure.
    So unless you’re buying 22 karat or pure gold jewelry, which is really not economically liable is that with a silver chain can say it’s “a silver chain” a chain made out of silver, whereas a 14 karat gold chain is only a little bit over half actual gold. Oh, and I forgot to mention that gold also does tarnish just not usually as fast as silver. One more note is that some people prefer the look of tarnished or “patina” on their silver jewelry and gold jewelry.
    I have it a gold mariner link bracelet from my grandfather that has a little bit of a tarnish what I like to call a patina and I think it looks cool, so it really depends on what kind of person you are whether you mind or not and that it’s an easy fix if you know what to do. Just google using baking soda and aluminum foil for silver. And aside that which also works for gold, the only other thing you need to use cleaning your jewelry is Dawn dish soap. So for tarnish boil some water line a tray with aluminum foil lay your jewelry on top of the foil sprinkle some baking soda over it, and then pour boiling water into the tray. Maybe add some more baking soda it will foam up a bit mix it up a little and let it sit until cold, then rinse off and/or use Dawn dish soap and hot water. Gold or silver.

      I haven't watched the video myself but I can tell you right now it all depends on the person. Depends on how much they sweat, what they do for work and every day activities. If they live by the ocean or swim in pools a lot. Those all can effect the silver. If you're not a sweaty person, dont do dirty work and are not doing dirty activities and stuff that can get your necklace dirty and grimy than it's not going to tarnish as quickly. If you're the latter than it can tarnish faster and you'll have to clean it more often. Really just depends on the person

    Sterling silver is 92 1/2 % silver. There are higher percentages of silver than sterling (925), such as Ultrafine or Superfine silver, like 950 silver (95% silver), which don't tarnish at all or only very little. I have some. After all, 99 % ( 100 %) silver coming out of the mines is never tarnished. ( Even the alloys in anything other than 24k gold tarnish.) I have 22k gold rings that never tarnish. I have had 14k gold jewelry that has "tarnished" due to the alloys. The higher silver % 's can be searched for availability.

However, I have never seen someone that can tell by just looking at a piece of jewelry if it I Sterling silver. If it’s Sterling it has to be stamped somewhere with .925. The cheap stuff can tarnish also.

    • @ksajak
      @ksajak Рік тому

      Wont really tarnish but the plating will eventually wear off. How long it lasts depends on how thick the plating is and what you do when having the bracelet on. Some people really like gold plated pieces..I personally dont care for them because of the wearing down factor. No matter the quality or how thick the plating is all plated jewelry eventually wears down. I'd rather solid gold, sterling silver or stainless steel. Stainless for hassle free and still looks good. Sterling for the look and because it's a precious metal. Looks for me I could care less about precious metal. It's not worth nearly what you paid for it anyway!

      Depends on what you do really. If you sweat a lot. If your work environment is really dirty. Wearing it in the shower will clean it pretty good for the most part. But if you want to clean it just for the purpose of cleaning it or if it helps ease your mind than a cleaning every other month will be good. Or if you find it getting quite dirty or dull every month wouldn't hurt. If you don't sweat a bunch and are not doing anything crazy to get it dirty you'll probably be good for a while. Some people go months or a year without cleaning..others weeks and some days. All depends on the person really

    I don't understand people buying Tiffany.. I get that you want quality, that's one thing but to an extent. Also to overpay for a gold chain is one thing, but to overpay on a silver chain!?
    Even most places like in the mall, Sears, and most big name jewelry stores will try and sell you silver jewelry at some INSANE high premium! That or 10kt hollow gold. I took my nephew to Jarred just to try on some chains to see what he liked. He was looking at this 8mm flat curb silver bracelet they were selling for $170!!! Came home and ordered him a 8mm flat curb silver chain from Luke Zion less than the price they were charging for a single bracelet! I think it's because these people selling over priced, low quality jewelry either at mall stores or jewelry shops either do it because they know they are taking advantage and don't care, or don't know and are told much because they personally don't know crap about jewelry. I don't remember the last time I went to a jewelry store and saw an actual scale! They just care about getting low quality product out the door ASAP with an insane premium.
    MAJOR props to guys like Dennis at Luke Zion for not only selling quality products but at a fair price!

  • @cooz0977
    @cooz0977 2 роки тому +1

    That doesn't make sense brother. The reason for the existence of sterling silver is that it's a non corrosive alloy composition. Think about it, the jewelry wouldn't make it off the sales floor before it was tarnished. Jewelry companies would be stuck with mass piles of tarnished, non desirable jewelery weeks after it was made.

    • @starmorpheus
      @starmorpheus 2 роки тому +3

      Silver oxidizes when exposed to air. Obviously manufacturers store their silver in conditions where it limits how exposed it is to the elements. The moment you wear the chain and it interacts with your body's oils, or minerals in water (from swimming or taking a shower) etc, it starts to tarnish.

    • @ksajak
      @ksajak Рік тому

      The 925 in sterling silver stands for the percentage of silver it is. It is 92.5% silver the rest is usually copper. This is because silver is very soft which is why jewelry isn't normally made with 99.9% silver. It's just too soft, malleable and brittle. Sterling silver tarnishes quicker than 99.9% silver because of the copper that is in it. 99.9% pure silver will eventually tarnish as well but takes longer

      Because he said you have to watch his other video that explains that..yea I know..I hate that too but without even seeing the video I can tell you that it depends on the person and what they do. I'd you're a sweaty person that works in a dirty environment than your silver is going to get dirty faster and require more cleaning and if you live near the ocean the salt water and salt in the environment can cause the silver to tarnish more quickly. Or if you're a swimmer the chlorine in the water causes silver to tarnish faster. If you're not a big sweater, not a dirty person and dont live at or near the ocean your silver wont tarnish as much or as often. If your silver is good quality. All silver will eventually tarnish it just depends on the person and how well you take care of it

    it also takes a layer of protective tarnish and tarnishes further and the soap wont help a simple polish with a rag left in the bathroom with polish, look at it as the towel for your jewelry

    Stopping air,oxygen, water, salt,or any chemical sweat etc will reduce tarnish, Polish puts a barrier up but you still need to replenish. If your to bloody lazy.
