People who aren’t old enough to remember probably look at those close-ups and think, “What the hell is that?” SCTV could crack me up with attention to details like that.
Yep, Dave Thomas did the best Bob Hope impersonation I ever seen... I remember the 1st time I saw this clip when SCTV was still being produced... I laughed so fucking hard I had tears rolling down my face... this whole thing is great, what a parody, Bob Hope's Desert Classic... the "Golf" War... they just kept the punches coming in this sketch... from Bob's opening dialog cheering on all those young hard fighting oil executives, the "cheap Boggy" to the Golda "My-ear" with the cameo by Chuck Heston... gawd these guys were hilarious... so glad and grateful that I can still watch these shows... a 1000 thumbs up
the best Bob Hope impression anyone has performed..I can't think of too many others that have even attempted him but Dave Thomas nailed it. Just great stuff...lol
Chris Elliott or someone doing an impression of Chris Elliott doing an impression of Bogart. Both, i "Hope." (insert Bob's/Dave's close-up "Laugh", here, please.)
The Great White North, Johnny LaRue, Mel's Rock Pile and the Fishin Musician. It didn't get much better than drinking a Molson, eating Back Bacon Pizza and watching SCTV. Ah the good ole days.
@1:30 Lola Heatherton was something the Saudis weren't ready for. There were a few blowouts on oil wells when she hit the green. Dave Thomas said that with a straight face while doing Bob Hope.
SCTV Troop are from Toronto. Were way past SNL. Dave Thomas` Bob Hope is the best ever. What I like that he doesn`t over do it. And does the little snide remarks so subtly .
This was the best skit comedy cast in history including the original lineup in SNL (IMHO). It’s a shame that Dave Thomas didn’t make it as big in the US.
I WILL NEVER FORGET WAITING FOR SNL TO GO OFF THE AIR SO ME AND MY BROTHER COULD SEE SOME REAL COMEDY AND LAUGH OUR ASSES OFF SCTV WAS AND STILL IS THE BEST !!!!!!!!!😅

Brilliant capture of Hope by Dave, who encapsulated the character and his times. Wonder if Lou Jaffe will reappear in a AI version as did Al Michaels did for the ‘24 Olympics.
Lol, I watch this skit perhaps once a year when I remember about it, and I still bust a gut watching it. Only those that have some knowledge about Middle East politics would be able to pick up on it.

Thomas' Hope is astonishing, but Flaherty gave one of THE best Nixons I've ever seen. It left me wanting more Nixon-Hope interaction...perhaps on Merv.
@@MuzixMaker I love everything about Catherine O'Hara. I remember seeing this clip late one night as a kid and I laughed so hard I almost pissed my pants. For real. I've loved her ever since. She's brilliant.
There was a retrospective on SCTV some years back and SNL Bill Murray was saying that he considered SCTV 'right up there' with SNL and Monty Python....seriously? He really thinks SNL is up there with SCTV and Monty Python? Dream on.
Come on man. Phil Hartman. Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer. Frankenstein Tarzan and Tonto. Farley Van down by the river. There was some absolutely fall on the floor funny SNL for a few years. It's a cesspool now.
Bill is right, i.e., SNL at its best. SNL and SCTV & Python are hugely different shows. SCTV (and Python) could do many more things in filming a sketch that SNL could not.
Dave Thomas was the only person who could actually do an excellent Bob Hope. Even Rich Little and Johnny Carson have said that Hope is very difficult to do.
This show....SCTV...was broadcast to CA. and OR., at one in the morning, Mondays, for a few years. I knew about the comedy club/studio, in Canada, from friends. The connection of the actors was not common info until decades later. I note most of the cast of the TV show survived/inspired a lot of reality, without the drugs and jail and death, like so many other people from comedy events.
His joke about Saudi women was true then and it's true now 40 years later. That's progress for ya, we're supposed to live side by side with these people and yet their culture is 200 years behind ours.
I don't think anyone could have guessed this would become a reality 50 years later.
His facial nuances and voice, are spot on Hope.
It's really amazing.
SCTV just might be the best comedy show of all time.
As a Canadian, I couldn't be more proud.🎉
@ lenhindle 1108
One of the greatest bits in comedy history....Thomas looking at the cue cards exactly the way Hope did...unreal....
@Beatnik you're saying that if he got out more, then he would know more of the all time great comedy bits? I'm not following your logic
My friend has a picture of Bob Hope and suggested he get a picture of Dave Thomas as Bob Hope.
Perfection. Thomas has it down. Those cut-and-paste close ups are excellent.
People who aren’t old enough to remember probably look at those close-ups and think, “What the hell is that?”
SCTV could crack me up with attention to details like that.
I heard a story that even Bob Hope was impressed with Dave Thomas’ impression of him.
Bob Hope was actually doing Dave Thomas doing Bob Hope. Think about it.
Dave did a great, really old Bob Hope impression when Bob was about 100 with the red circles around the eyes.
Dave Thomas owns the Hope impression. Rich Little couldn't do Bob, no one else could either.
Agreed! Dave Thomas did an amazing impression of Bob Hope. He even looks like he could have been Bob Hope's son.
John Roarke on Fridays came close. And Darrell Hammond from SNL did an all right job.
Awesome Bob Hope impression he looks just like him!

I've said it elsewhere, he becomes Bob Hope. Could watch him for hours. First time I've seen this. Classic.
It's all sand except the traps, which are grass. lol This is awesome - living through the 70's an 80's is a must to enjoy the genius of this.

THIS WAS AND STILL IS THE ULTIMATE BEST SKETCH COMEDY IN THE UNIVERSE ! !!
SCTV was great!! All the actors were so talented & hilarious!! Thanks for the memories. Love Eugene Levy😂
I've noticed this exceptionally talented people is ,they can act , dance ,sing and play musical instruments. Incredible, once in a lifetime cast .

The cheap Bogey !!!! "Your the guy who took my falcon and stole my strawberries" !!!! I have laughed at that for two days now !!!
Maltese Falcon and Cain Mutiny! I also laughed for days!
Chris Elliott or someone doing an impression of Chris Elliott doing an impression of Bogart. Both, i "Hope." (insert Bob's/Dave's close-up "Laugh", here, please.)
That was funny!
That Nixon impression is actually far more accurate than most. Everyone else just does David Frye's impression of Nixon.
S.N.L was never this funny! This is creative and funny.
This brings back such happy childhood memories. I wish there was still a show as great as this was.
Growing up with SCTV - it was awesome!
Thank god for Schitts Creek. I needed that!

The pipeline bit had me laughing for 10 minutes.

Yes. The voice is a little too high here but he sure got right by the time of the People's Golden Global Choice Awards.
