The cantata 'Christen ätzet diesen Tag' by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) is framed by two very festive, opulently orchestrated chorale arias. In addition to strings and basso continuo, Bach uses 4 trumpets, 3 oboes, bassoon and timpani. In form, 'Christen ätzet diesen Tag' is captivating in its strict symmetry. In the center is a secco recitativo (the singer is accompanied only by the basso continuo) in which the reversal of suffering is sung. Before and after the central movement is a da capo aria for two voices each. And the two are each framed by an accompagnato recitativo (the singer is accompanied by the orchestra).
The genesis of 'Christen ätzet diesen Tag' was unclear for a long time and the usual Christmas motifs are omitted in the text. It was only in recent research that the mystery surrounding this supposed Christmas cantata was solved. Bach performed it in three different places in three different versions (see: Marc-Roderich Pfau, Weimar - Halle - Leipzig. Drei Orte, drei Anlässe und drei Fassungen der Musik von 'Christen ätzet diesen Tag' (BWV 63), 2021). The original version of the cantata was performed in Weimar in 1713 - for Christmas and for the birthday of the terminally ill Duke of Weimar. The cantata was revised and performed in Halle for the anniversary of the Reformation on October 31, 1717. And finally, it was performed by Bach, in yet another revised form, at Christmas 1723 in Leipzig. It is in this version that it has become known as the Christmas Cantata. This multiple use of Bach's own compositions (as well as those of others) was common during his lifetime and is called the parody process. The genesis of 'Christen ätzet diesen Tag' and its three versions explains the exceedingly festive character of the cantata - without it being particularly Christmas-like in nature.
The internationally renowned conductor and Bach expert Philippe Herreweghe founded the Collegium Vocale Gent in 1970 and together they performed early music as a kind of historical performance practice. In 1989, the orchestra of the Collegium Vocale Gent joined the choir, which is made up of first-class international performers of baroque music. With the Collegium Vocale Gent choir and orchestra, Herreweghe has since produced landmark early music recordings, including the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach.
