It was done right. The v8 was mounted straight (not transverse) and the drive shafts to the front wheels were equal length. It had no torque steer. GM did this from 1966- 78 on Toronado and Eldorado.
Knew a guy who had bought the 65 Toronado when it first came out for the sole reason that his dachshund could climb in and walk across the floor-pan without having to climb over the drive train hump rwd cars had.
The 66 Toronado emerged at a time when GM was at their best, and was built pretty much because they could do it. It was made to be a modern take on the Cord L-29/810/812 cars, and was overbuilt for what it was. Back then, GM made sure that car wouldn't break down, and as a measure of how strong the transaxle was, the 455 engine and transaxle were used in the GMC motorhome with only a few modifications. Contrast this car with the Chevy Citation and it's easy to see that by 1980 GM had really gone off the rails.

Yes! I'm always gonna go for rwd, but if V-8 is on the table, regardless of any other variables, that's what I'll take. It adds a dimension to whatever else the vehicle is.

A great collection here. I have lost count of the number of times I've watched this video. The Lincoln and the Cadillacs have got such a wonderful rumble to them. I can't imagine there being a front wheel drive car with V8 being designed and produced again in the current climate. Lots of American cars get a bad rap on this side of the pond but I wish there were more over here in the UK. It's quite boring with so many cars on the road being hatchbacks with a small 4 cylinder diesel or turbocharged petrol engine. I've always had a soft spot for big saloons with big naturally aspirated engines but hardly anybody buys them over here anymore. I bet one of those 18-20 year old Lincoln continentals would still be better to this day for a motoway slog than many of the modern saloons which are so common nowadays.
I check the price list of the Audi A8 in that time. The quattro was standard on V8/V10 engines. You could get a V6 without quattro though. Same for VW Phaeton etc. Maybe there were lower spec cars for the US market. Not sure about that.
+VisioRacer I was really hoping the Oldsmobile Aurora would be included in this list... The 4.0 liter (244ci) DOHC V8 stock made 250hp and 260ft-lbs of torque. the same engine was used in Cadillac's LeMans prototype race car. At 3800lbs this car accelerated from 0-60 in 8.6 seconds but a custom exhaust to replace the factory system, as well as a cold air intake, is enough to drop the 0-60 down to roughly 7.1 seconds. The front facia might be off putting and ugly but I've personally driven 3 of them and for $2,000-$4,000 USD It's a very smooth ride with halfway decent power for anyone on a budget
+taoist anarchist there's a video on youtube called "Oldsmobile Aurora 0-130" and the owner of the car and video states in the description that he drives a 2002 Olds Aurora with the 4.0 northstar V8, that has custom dual exhaust and a custom cold air intake (you can make one from piping you can find at virtually any auto parts store) . now like I said, the factory 0-60 tine on that car is rated at 8.6 seconds, which I was able to verify through first hand experience with both a 2003 and 2001 olds aurora 4.0. The owner of the 2002 i mentioned above starts his video with "0 to 60 after the intake" and after timing the 0-60 from the whole 0-130 run, the constant times I kept getting were between 7.0 and 7.28 seconds which out of 5 attempts to time it would average out to about 7.1 seconds. i can post the link to said video if you like

Great video. Thema with ferrari engine is a cult car. I mean , it is almost a 4 door ferrari, One of the coolest car ever in my opinion. I planned to buy one from germany years ago., but after losing my job due to economic collapse, now it is my dream car.
Due to interior space. By not having a prop under the car, the interior space could get bigger. And for fat Americans that is important. In the case of the A8 it was to give a cheaper option for the customers.
Actually many Cadillacs in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s were FWD, including the first generation STS which was later changed to RWD on the second generation.
szafirowy01 because it's to much for the front suspension and tires. Steering and driven. When accelerating all the pressure goes to the rear. And with a V8 that's just stupid..
cnn cnn Too much for the suspension and tyres? And for the rear ones it wouldn't be too much? I see a lack of logic or enough reasoning here. Yes, in some cases (Taurus SHO) it is stupid, but for rather lazy (despite being powerful) limos?
szafirowy01 it's pretty simple. When you accelerate weight of the car hangs on the rear tires. Same with braking but than 70/80 procent hangs on the front. That's why you have bigger front brakes. In Europe where I live all the cars are almost front driven. When you have a 2.0 tdi for example its impossible to accelerate hard with a corner and some wet road surface. It's a well known problem with Fwd. Lot of understeer. To much stress for the front tires. But it's cheaper and lighter. But not better. Ever saw a Fwd bmw m3 with Fwd? Why then a V8. It's for cheap European cars
szafirowy01 but for a lazy cruising Lincoln it should be Oké. But then again. Why should a 2500kg car be lighter with Fwd. Think it doesn't matter with that much weight. That Lancia and Pontiac are just Strange..
Thanks for having that Lancia on the list , I had never heard of that model before now. I thought that it was a Volvo when it first appeared on the screen!
If you're not throwing north of 250hp and skewing the laws of physics. Small tossible, light on its feet car thats fun like a miata but practical because you get added space with the trans tunnel removed. I have a fwd beater to my RWD 06 GTO.
saw a lancia thema driving just about 3 weeks ago in a traffic jam (it was clearing up so we could drive like 5o kph ) , such an awesome sound , even when it is on low torque :)
I know. I say hp because Americans seem not to know what PS is. Therefore I used the PS number with the hp unit. So in my videos all the horsepower figure are basically PS units.
+szafirowy01 maybe proper engineer can make even 400 hp car controlled to be easy but yes its absolutely law of physic, that's why formula one use rwd rather than fwd dude!
A Fan v8 is a great engine with great amounts of hp and tq and when u slap more power with a fwd, it's even better! fwd give the car a great amount traction whether if ur in a straight line or turning around corners. seems pretty cool to me
Understeer and less responsive, and worse handling and reading of the road. there is a reason there never was a fwd supercar.... and all f1 cars are rwd
Chris Williams You lose less power with fwd also, you have no driveshaft to spin.I like all cars, wether awd, rwd, fwd, they all bring something good to the table.
ᏌᎦᏋ ᎿᖇᏫllᎶᏌᏁ 0⃣1⃣ lol the FWD community just has to make up excuses all the time. You did just now as well ... "for what it is" current civic type r = 310 hp, not 350. It manages a real world 0-60 of around 6 seconds in absolutely ideal conditions ... for that amount of power and lack of weight, that's pathetic nowadays. No one seems to consistently approach that figure anyway, because FWD launches are unpredictable. Usually for this car, it's 6.5 and up. This is a recurring theme you see with these high horsepower FWD cars. Handling issues aside, they just cannot put the power down. Reviewers, magazines, random people, etc ... they always do the same thing (just as you did) ... hey it's pretty good ... for a front wheel drive car. Which means it's just a bit less crap really ... The focus RS, which always was the posterboy for FWD performance is now AWD ... coincidental? Hardly. The current gen focus RS decimates the type R in acceleration. Granted, it has a bit more power, but also quite a bit more weight. It just destroys the type R every time, managing sub 5 second consistently, and sometimes even below 4.5. FWD is for economy, just get over it. They've been able to stretch it very far, and do amazing things with it, but it really is just for economy. I'm not talking about fuel economy, i'm talking about it being cheaper to mass produce. No driveshafts to balance, no diffs, cases or gearboxes anywhere else in the car. Everything fits on one subframe, which they just screw in from the bottom. Fast FWD cars are just a whole bunch of money thrown into an economy platform. Every time they do something noteworthy with an FWD platform, it always has to be "FWD record" for this or that, or "first FWD car to" something or something. Saying nice things about FWD in a performance setting is like being politically correct to some SJW just to make him/her feel comfortable. Nothing more to it. I'm sure you'll disagree, but ultimately, that doesn't matter. Reality supports my statements.
detaart True, but that doesn't mean that they are pointless and terrible. FWD has more advantages than just economy and cheap production and assembly, which are being light and drivability in the snow. Plus, V8 FWD cars are pretty unique. Sure, you don't like them because they can't put their power down well *(and why would you want to go full throttle in a FWD car?)* And i'm not a FWD person.
They are amazing in the snow. I had snow tires on mine and it would go anywhere. I once took it home with 6 inches of snow (live in the Appalachian area) on the ground and I don't remember it sliding once. All that weight on the driving wheels really makes a difference.
@@silviocolella3308 After driving the Seville STS with Northstar V8 I agree with you. It is a very enjoyable car even with that layout. If only it was this thing that I was wrong about... I wish I could go back in time.
There was a lot of fast American V8's back in the day. There was even more slow ones though. the 70's, and 80's were a bad era for American cars in general. not as bad as the 90's though. The US automakers didn't start building real cars again until everyone had the internet, and Americans started to realize what they were missing. Cars like the Gen 2, and 3 Cadillac CTS-V, new Mustangs with the fat plane crank V8, are bad ass. There's still some serious straight line cars too, like the Hellcats. At least they figured out some people wanted to corner like the rest of the world. Either way, my original point was, if you back to the early days, before the fuel crisis, and safety BS, there was some Damn fast American cars. Not many could handle though, but drag racing was the focus. A lot of American V8's were great too, but tuned way down for regulation and fuel savings. When people joke about how a 5.7 liter V8 could make such a small amount of HP, they don't realize, it was the governments fault. The engines were capable of SO MUCH more. Some were even used in European supercars.
I had an '02 Olds Aurora with the 4.0L V8, looked a bit like a grandma's car but it hauled ass when you wanted it to. Kinda unnerving, those types of cars, now I have an '01 JDM twin turbo legacy, with its awd and tight suspension, rides like a car you'd expect to go fast, not a floaty American boat like the Oldsmobile
Myles Rach and they came in 6-speeds, which not only astounds me, but would've been a great improvement over that slush-box auto 4 mine had. Mind you all that shifting would've sort-of defeated the purpose of the luxurious, easy, gentle ride it was
My brother had a 1975 Eldorado Cadillac with the 500. It tipped the scales heavier than you report at 5300lbs though not dry. They made about 310 net horsepower which is only down maybe 5% peak output VS earlier models and it's performance was a lot better than that. We got a 15.8s @87mph pass in that thing after only a few tries. Think of a really heavy Northstar 90s Eldorado doing mid 14s with and added 1000 lbs to slow it down(20% addition). No way it was running 0-60 in 10 seconds.
the sho is a nice car but those v8s had a problem with the cams from the factory were the gear and cam would separate and do some damage. it requires the cam gear to be welded to fix the problem.
The Eldorado was a fun car to own i had a 1970 when i was 18 in the mid 80s.Only got 9 mpg but could get 9 people in the seats and 5 in the trunk on $5 a car drive in nights.

For the 4.2 it was standard, but only as an option for the 3.7
That's only what you think.
I stand by my word. The A8 once had a FWD V8 version and it was the 3.7-litre engine.
What is that market? Because there are hundreds of market around the globe, not only the one you live in
i'll assume american (we always get the short end of the stick)
VisioRacer Thank you very much for sharing my Thema, I was happy to see that
Lancia Thema Semiz That's a sweet little car!
Kelly Bundy *the new allante*
The owner of the 2002 i mentioned above starts his video with "0 to 60 after the intake" and after timing the 0-60 from the whole 0-130 run, the constant times I kept getting were between 7.0 and 7.28 seconds which out of 5 attempts to time it would average out to about 7.1 seconds. i can post the link to said video if you like
That Pontiac originally let the factory with front tires wider than back ones , correct?
Correct.
bercholr yep it helped with better traction and handling.
I did the tires on one last week, I can confirm this.
Subbed. Your channel and videos are great fun to watch, keep em going!
Continentals were faster than 8.5s... 1995-1997 got 264 bhp, 1998-2002 had 275bhp.
Yes, the real acceleration is 7.4 sec
Tim the bear at 7:30
I always thought those Lincolns were rear drive. Man was I wrong.
The town cars were rear wheel drive
Yes Town car was rear wheel drive Continental was front wheel drive
wow that Taurus is insane👍
surprised there was no Monte Carlo SS V8 or Impala SS on here see those around alot
camdog124 "FWD V8s you may not know about"
He mentioned it. The Pontiac is just more obscure which is why he chose to feature it.
Chevrolet Implala, Chevrolet Monte Carlo is on the same platform as the Pontiac Grand Prix
The grand prix gxp is better than the SS cars anyway. has paddle shifters to stay in the power band better, wider front tires, heads up display, bilstein struts. I wish I had all that shit in my impala SS
DUB Productions The 2007 Monte Carlo SS has a 5.3L V8 FWD
Gotta love that Lincoln and that GXP! Taurus is interesting as well.
I want a gxp so bad
Looks badass, yes
It's badass to drive as well.
Nice to hear that
I had a grey 2008 gxp 5 years ago. Pretty quick car but it was so nose heavy that it handled odd. That and the transmission grenaded at 66,000 miles.
I did the tires on one last week. The fronts were noticeably wider than the rears, which was odd.
LS4 5.3L V-8 Applications:
2005-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP2006-2009 Chevrolet Impala SS2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS2008-2009 Buick LaCrosse Super
Yeah V8 FWD a8 might be drawback but mechanicallywise it makes life so much easier than QUATTRO
The 1st video of the Lancia was filmed in Austria! That's like 20 minutes away from me :D
2:35 good looking? i nearly threw up
Great video.
Thema with ferrari engine is a cult car. I mean , it is almost a 4 door ferrari, One of the coolest car ever in my opinion.
I planned to buy one from germany years ago., but after losing my job due to economic collapse, now it is my dream car.
Why fwd? 😬
why rwd?
rip meek miLL yeah but its no way near as fun as rwd
because your less likely to die
Chris Williams what do you mean?
Due to interior space. By not having a prop under the car, the interior space could get bigger. And for fat Americans that is important. In the case of the A8 it was to give a cheaper option for the customers.
Actually many Cadillacs in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s were FWD, including the first generation STS which was later changed to RWD on the second generation.
0:55-1:03 made me cream my pants
now thats what i call a unique car!
Lancia and SHO are best
This video is informative and brilliant to watch cheers. FWD V8 are cool
ls4life 😍
RlfX97 Love my gxp. still wish it was rwd though haha
OMG That Lancia!!
Here's an idea, let's take a V8 and make it useless!
Myles Prower --> That made me laugh. Well said!
Nah
nice vid. I built the black sho on the dyno in that vid. Cool to see it again
I don't care what anyone says or if any of these cars were any good, a FWD V8 car is just stupid!
Because?...
szafirowy01 because it's to much for the front suspension and tires.
Hehe, you are welcome
fwd = not worth having
you'd be screwed in europe
AWD = the best and the safest option
+stuckintraffic?getabike!
If you're not throwing north of 250hp and skewing the laws of physics. Small tossible, light on its feet car thats fun like a miata but practical because you get added space with the trans tunnel removed. I have a fwd beater to my RWD 06 GTO.
Oh man, my sister had an '86 de ville as her first car. Drove it like a grandma
ohh he can afford a V8 in Austria
saw a lancia thema driving just about 3 weeks ago in a traffic jam (it was clearing up so we could drive like 5o kph ) , such an awesome sound , even when it is on low torque :)
a non 4wd audi?! what madness is this?!
A non-quattro Audi is not a rare thing, but a FWD V8 Audi is though
Gotta love that classic American engineering
somesay fwd car can take maximum 280hp before its gone too understeer
Look at the 310hp Civic Type R
That is not a law of physics, just a matter of proper engineering. So a 100hp FWD can be very understeery, and 300hp FWD can handle very good.
+VisioRacer i know and it's not 310 hp but 310ps/306hp
I know. I say hp because Americans seem not to know what PS is. Therefore I used the PS number with the hp unit. So in my videos all the horsepower figure are basically PS units.
+szafirowy01 maybe proper engineer can make even 400 hp car controlled to be easy
but yes its absolutely law of physic, that's why formula one use rwd rather than fwd dude!
cool fwd Cars especially the cadillac with the Big v8 under the hood but good video
Why the fuck would anyone want a front wheel drive v8 vehicle?
A Fan v8 is a great engine with great amounts of hp and tq and when u slap more power with a fwd, it's even better! fwd give the car a great amount traction whether if ur in a straight line or turning around corners. seems pretty cool to me
How could u not want one buddy best configuration ever
@@silviocolella3308 Thanks for replying 6 years later
jeezus chraist that lancia thema sounds gorgeous. if all ferraris had that crank layout id like them alot more hahahaha good gawd thats sound..
Thanks! Now I know which cars to never buy
Is the Cord 810/12 to well known to be on this list?
WHY FWD IT RUINS IT
Mrgamingcraft Clearly, Minecraft kids like you frequently pretend to know a lot about cars, haha.
Mrgamingcraft agree
legioN
not most of the time, lol
Understeer and less responsive, and worse handling and reading of the road. there is a reason there never was a fwd supercar.... and all f1 cars are rwd
Chris Williams You lose less power with fwd also, you have no driveshaft to spin.I like all cars, wether awd, rwd, fwd, they all bring something good to the table.
I like the sleeper look of that torus!!!!
9 pointless cars you may not know about*
Fixed it for you
detaart
Pointless because what exactly? Or are you just a RWD/AWD fanboy?
ᏌᎦᏋ ᎿᖇᏫllᎶᏌᏁ 0⃣1⃣ Because putting a lot of power through the front wheels is pointless
detaart
But look at the current gen Honda Civic Type R. It has 310 HP but its FWD only and it performs well for what it is.
ᏌᎦᏋ ᎿᖇᏫllᎶᏌᏁ 0⃣1⃣ lol the FWD community just has to make up excuses all the time. You did just now as well ... "for what it is"
current civic type r = 310 hp, not 350.
Reality supports my statements.
detaart
True, but that doesn't mean that they are pointless and terrible. FWD has more advantages than just economy and cheap production and assembly, which are being light and drivability in the snow.
Plus, V8 FWD cars are pretty unique. Sure, you don't like them because they can't put their power down well *(and why would you want to go full throttle in a FWD car?)*
And i'm not a FWD person.
continentals are great in the snow!!!
They are amazing in the snow. I had snow tires on mine and it would go anywhere. I once took it home with 6 inches of snow (live in the Appalachian area) on the ground and I don't remember it sliding once. All that weight on the driving wheels really makes a difference.
FWD is so wrong. It makes even something as cool as a V8 seem unattractive.
You’re wrong brother
@@silviocolella3308 After driving the Seville STS with Northstar V8 I agree with you. It is a very enjoyable car even with that layout.
If only it was this thing that I was wrong about... I wish I could go back in time.
Seeing the V8 sho makes me miss my old 97:/ they get some hate but I had so much fun in it. I plan on getting another at some point, if I can find one
Lancia 8.32...
Man, That Car !
Mate, That Engine !
I'd swap it into a rwd car
Thanks for no music. Gr from Holland😎
Front wheel drive V8 carz are cool!!!
Old american V8's sound fucking beast but good god they're slow.
not all of them are slow, example the hemis
Some were even used in European supercars.
flatplane Mustang? shit sounds more like a truck than a f1 ferrari to me but whatever you say bro
an f1 ferrari? really?
The GT350 actually has a 5.2L flatplane V8. Look it up.
I had an '02 Olds Aurora with the 4.0L V8, looked a bit like a grandma's car but it hauled ass when you wanted it to. Kinda unnerving, those types of cars, now I have an '01 JDM twin turbo legacy, with its awd and tight suspension, rides like a car you'd expect to go fast, not a floaty American boat like the Oldsmobile
the second gens had more power than the first gens. but the first gens were nicer in my opinion. a real sleeper.
The Eldorado was a fun car to own i had a 1970 when i was 18 in the mid 80s.Only got 9 mpg but could get 9 people in the seats and 5 in the trunk on $5 a car drive in nights.
that lanica is awesome
If you search for french and italian V6's, you'll find plenty of them all FWD, including a few with active suspension, all factory models. Here our highway police force used for long time Citroen Xantia 3L v6 Activa, awesome car :)
tunespt Those Citroens are sick, saw one in New Zealand, looked so damn futuristic for an 80s car. I stared at it so long one of the owners friends came and asked if I was looking to buy it haha
Roddy Dykes check my channel :)
Module79L ah yeah I was thinking of those elongated CX's, with features like auto-leveling and what-not
the AWD option on all these cars were well worth it.
