Founded by Cynthia Obleton in 2019, the #Fawohodze Project was created to build a bridge of healing and unity between citizens of African Nations and their brethren in the United States. In Akan Fante dilect fawohodze (pronounced “Fa-ho-ze”) means “freedom,” and in the spirit of freedom, the project offers life-changing trips to Ghana, West Africa, for African Americans ages 13-25, and African American senior citizens over age 62, particularly those with limited access to international travel. These sliding-scale, income-based trips are an opportunity for African Americans to connect with their culture, at either end of life.
Born and raised in Ghana, Obleton grew up in the shadow of Fort Amsterdam in the village of Abandze, which functioned as a slave port. Upon relocating to America, Obleton came to understand the disconnect between Africans on the continent and those in the diaspora. Inspired to bridge this gap, Obleton created the Fawohodze project with the goal of transforming the future of African culture, tradition, and heritage on American soil by providing courses in African cuisine, African Style Baby wearing, African hair braiding and natural hair care techniques, geography, local customs, and more. There is power and healing in knowing where one comes from and being able to experience life there.
In-country, the Fawohodze project serves local Ghanaian youth, providing them with library access and homework support to improve their long-term outcomes and inspire independence and freedom of thought. The project also works with at-risk women, helping them become literate and support themselves through better employment opportunities and environmental awareness.
