Tbh, the themes of comfort at the beginning and end, the sense of security, warmth, and reassurance, dont really fit in with OK Computer. The paranoia, alienation filled tracks from paranoid android to no surprises has a very heavy anxious mood. Still, very deserving of a Single though.

@@ck891 that's nonsense. My point stands: when it comes to the amount and quality of B-Sides the Pumpkins blow Radiohead out of the water and that's also not surprising seeing as the Pumpkins put out about ten times as many b-sides as Radiohead if not more.

For you guys who want the lyric
    This is the place
    Sit down, you're safe now
You've been stuck in a lift
We've been trying to reach you, Thom
    This is the place
    It won't hurt ever again
    The smell of air conditioning
    The fish are belly-up
    Empty all your pockets
'Cause it's time to come home
    This is the place
    Remember me
I'm the face you always see
You've been stuck in a lift
In the belly of a whale
At the bottom of the ocean
    The smell of air-conditioning
    The fish are belly-up
    Empty all your pockets
'Cause it's time to come home
    The smell of air-conditioning
    The fish are belly-up

Today is the first day of the rest of your days

Background of this song that I’m sure most are aware of but I’ll say it anyway:
This song was originally written for The Bends. They performed it live a couple of times in 1996. They tried to develop it more to put it on OK Computer, but they thought the commercial potential of the song was too stressful, so they never finished it.
The live version and some early studio versions are much more explosive and loud, and were a fan favorite for unreleased/bootlegged songs.
In 2017, for the 20th anniversary of OK Computer, they released a finished version of the song. Along with a music video of Thom in a lift, visiting different rooms, with cameos from characters from other music videos. Such as the kid from Paranoid Android at 2:52.

I like the idea that Thom here has just accepted the slow drag of life and descended until the eventual end-- where he wouldn't have to be stuck anymore. In the end, we are all on the same lift together. There is an end to the descent. And you don't have to cut the descent short. Accept that your doors will open to strange places and people, and friends will come and press all of the floors. Whether you accept that or not, everyone wants you to stick around for a couple more floors. So stick around. Stick around with all of us and just... "let it go".

For a brief moment, the "01" in the elevator display turns into an "OK", then the doors open and Thom sees someone who looks like himself but isn't. That, I think, is Radiohead's lead singer looking back at the man he used to be when he made OK Computer.
He walks toward that person, but he isn't himself anymore - there is only one Thom, and they ain't him. They turn around to face the real one; he stays put, looking back at them. Even though he pressed "01" on the panel, he won't join them because they are not his destination. Rather, he contemplates the OK floor briefly, then moves on (presumably) to the ground floor where he needs to attend to real-life matters - hence the bags.

What a cool video, a gift for Radiohead diehard fans! Loads of references to Thom's life and previous Radiohead music videos. Ones I picked out:
00:20 Dajana (his girlfriend) and Agnes (his daughter)
1:04 shopping trolley reference to Fake Plastic Trees video
1:17 trees crawling in corridor reference to There There video 2:53Robin from Paranoid Android video goldfish scene
2:57 dancers from Street Spirit music video
3:13 floor no. 3 girl in bed on wall reference to Climbing Up The Walls from album no.3
3:33 the lyrics " today is the first day of the rest of your days" , possible reference to fear of growing old (&bald!) looking back at his life etc.
May be reading too much into those but I'm sure there's loads more. Still trying to work out the significance of the bald estate agents (reference to Phil?!) and the old lady with the purple coat...

Man, you can't say lift isn't one of the most emotional songs RH have ever made. because it's so.. applicable to everything. I see it as acceptance of living a mundane life, but being happy because life is still a blessing, so enjoy your journey, until it's tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimmmmmeee to come home.
small edit: when watching the music video i saw at around 2:57 Thom is speaking to the electrician changing the lights, it's like "oh how are you doing that in a moving lift?" genuinely looks like he's actually asking, knowing Thom, he probably was. adorable

Living in Oxford, I've seen him in town quite frequently. Last time I saw him was 2 months ago, crossing the road in this same exact green coat and white shoes!!! It was the closest I got to him, and all I could say is: "I love you man!!!" He got sooo embarrassed :))) My girlfriend told me later that I didn't just say it, I've actually shouted at him. Ouch! It was one of those cathartic moments.

God, man...Radiohead's music never ceases to astound me as well as make me want to cry...It's so introspective yet reflective...It makes you contemplate the intricacies and simplicity of life...It pins your heart and penetrates your soul. I really love this song, because it speaks to a feeling we all have, but can't quite put into words. That feeling when you finally see reality for what it is, after a long time of feeling disconnected from it. It's not necessarily happiness or sadness, its more base than that, and much more simple, but it feels good, better perhaps than any other feeling there is. Sometimes we all get stuck in a lift, and we're unaware of the people trying to reach us outside, desperately trying to connect. Its that moment of clarity, when you come to from all the bullshit, and 'come home' to reality.

Just wanted to express my gratitude to Radiohead for finally releasing this song. It meant a lot to me many years ago, but it also means so much to me now at a different time in my life. Also, thanks to Mr. Oscar Hudson and team for making a great video, which I think adds to the song's impact, especially for those of use who are more visually oriented. So much packt into the song and video, but a few special takeaways for me: as a father, I laughed at how kids can throw a wrench in your plans just as you're starting to get moving. Also, not sure if intentional, but I though of the Harry Dean Stanton character from "Paris, Texas" (guy in red hat). I loved that movie, so maybe its just me, but I appreciated his inclusion.

Interesting things I've noticed so far:
There a fake plastic tree on each floor.
On 3:33 the 01 floor number flickers briefly and changes to OK.
The guy on 2:52 resembles the Paranoid Android character. The fish bowl he's drinking out of is also a reference to the music video.
The 10th floor (2:20) kinda reminds me of the High and Dry music video, I could be wrong though. Same goes for the 11th floor.
I'll update more speculations when possible. Was there anything else I missed?
EDIT: So here's a little update of what other possible references I got based on the replies.
There's a shopping cart on 1:03, perhaps another possible reference to Fake Plastic Trees.
The bald men in suits on 1:38 could either be a reference to the Just music video. It could also be reference to the lyric "the yuppies networking" from Paranoid Android or the man in the suit from the music video. OR maybe there's a Phil Selway cosplay going on....
The old man on 2:35 highly resembles the guy from the Karma Police music video.
At 2:51, perhaps that's a reference to Kid A? Maybe that's too far fetched though...
At 2:57, the women kinda resemble the women from Street Spirit.
Someone mentioned a possible reference to No Surprises on 3:00, I'm assuming he/she is referring to the lighting? IMO, that seems too obscure. Surely they must be a better reference somewhere...
Also, anyone found any explanations to floors on 1:30, 3:11 and 3:26?

I was honestly, positively convinced that this song's chorus was _"a smell of recognition / the face you barely loved"_ for almost two decades.
And only this year I found out that I had misheard the lyrics *the entire fucking time...*

But is it? I've been re-listening to the pinkpop version (especially the higher quality recording which has surfaced recently) a lot lately and it's just that in Thom's enunciation "airconditioning" and "recognition" as well as "face you barely loved" and "fish are belly up" sound absolutely indistinguishable...

this song feels like a true, happy, and comforting ending to ok computer after 20 long years from 1997. it feels like you're finally safe and in peace now 20 years after the story of ok computer from airbag to the tourist. everything that happened in ok computer was just a dream, and you've been stuck in a lift.

It's nice that Radiohead are now comfortable enough with their identity to release a song and video that is clearly more of a simple Bends-era song and doesn't have the complexity/subtlety of their later work

I've listened to this song for months and i can confidently say this song changed my life. From the music, to the video, to the symbolism, everything is crafted in a way to make you reexamine life and the fears that come with it. Your fears and anxieties that come with life arent as scary as you think they are. Thank you Yorke for this amazing song. Stay strong y'all.

Man, this song is so bittersweet because I believe that Thom's vocals and most of the music was probably recorded in the early days of Radiohead. Thom's voice was most likely captured in his peak, capturing his essence and emotional feeling in full at the time. We probably won't get any future songs like this absolute gem. I'm sad but happy that I get to experience this song.

Wow, what a beautiful, bittersweet song. I've been a huge Radiohead fan since early high school (like 13 years or so) but was not aware of this OK Computer outtake until now. So this is interesting, it's like a new song to me, even though it's actually not new at all.

You said it yourself that it wouldn't fit. Everything on OK Computer feels very intentional. It's not even my favourite album by Radiohead and I think it's overrated but this in terms of quality and lyrics and theme just would not fit. It's quite a generic song and sounds like something in between The Bends and OK Computer. It's a little too basic for OK Computer.

The only way to escape the 'lift' is accepting that you are stuck in one but can not do anything about it. Just enjoy the ride which comes with not only all these unannounced strange people entering and exiting but also your thoughts, anxieties and concepts. Some make sense and some don't (the girl who pressed all the buttons leaving Thom questioning why). You can not make someone arrive or stop someone from leaving. They will stick around for a few floors until they reach their destinations. And maybe realization is what sets one free from the misery of it all where they stop feeling the hurt that comes with an inadequacy of closure that generally accompany someone leaving your life abruptly.
A fkn masterpiece of a video and free therapy if you ask me :)

The young girl and woman in black at the start are Thoms daughter and girlfriend. See how his daughter presses all the buttons on the lift? Could this be representing all the many different stops in life he had to take once he had a child? And see how his girlfriend goes to the overturned plant and rescues it? Thoms original partner Rachel died last year, could this represent how this woman has helped rescue his overturned life? All comments/thoughts welcome guys! :)

    • @Eorzat
      @Eorzat 7 років тому +8

Don't think they really represent anything. His daughter pressing all the buttons is just a dick move that sets up the whole video for why he's in the elevator (lift) for so long. His girlfriend "rescuing" the plant probably doesn't represent anything either - just a reference to Fake Plastic Trees. The whole video is apparently just references to other RH videos, so, if anything, the video is just symbolic of their career in general.

    This is the place
    Sit down, you’re safe now
You’ve been stuck in a lift
We’ve been trying to reach you, Thom
    This is the place
    It won’t hurt ever again
    The smell of air conditioning
    The fish are belly up
    Empty all your pockets
Because it’s time to come home
    This is the place
    Remember me?
I’m the face you always see
You’ve been stuck in a lift
In the belly of a whale
At the bottom of the ocean
    The smell of recognition,
    A face you barely loved
    Empty all your pockets
Because it’s time to come home
    The smell of air conditioning
    The fish are belly up
    Let it go
    Today is the first day
Of the rest of your days
    So lighten up, squirt

If we continue this trend and move onto 00's nostalgia in the '20's, I will be disappointed and continue blasting The Bends while Nelly is playing(obnoxiously) in every fucking dive bar from here to Bangkok.
