  • In a significant move, the Indian government has announced a 20% export duty on parboiled rice, citing concerns over domestic grain supplies amidst growing apprehensions about the impact of El Nino on rainfall patterns. Just a month prior, the government had already imposed a ban on the export of non-basmati white rice, a widely consumed staple. This decision is rooted in experts' predictions of reduced rainfall due to El Nino, potentially straining the availability of essential grains in the local market.
India, a major exporter of parboiled rice, shipped approximately 7.4 million tons of this rice variant in 2022. The export ban on non-basmati white rice is expected to persist until at least November, driven by the government's concerns over the potential impact of El Nino on the sowing of Kharif crops, as disclosed by an official source.
