Praying for rain. Thanks for the tips on locking the water down. Sad that some people don't take care of their livestock.

A few weeks later, looks like a break in the heat and rain will be coming to DFW. But it has been so long.....

Yes we need rain! Hope it comes for us next week. Do you feed hay when the pasture run out? The spring was great. But hope we get a good fall to refill the tanks.

Yes, I will feed hay for a few weeks and see what happens. I will figure out my hay needs based on my numbers. If I don’t get any rain by October 1, I will start selling cows so I can make it through the winter with the hay I have left.

We’re dry here in South-Central Pennsylvania, too. Not yet in severe drought, but getting there. I noticed our cattle were reluctant to drink yesterday (about 100 degrees real feel) from our water rough in late afternoon. Do cattle get enough hydration from nighttime and early morning drinking, as well as some grazing, when their afternoon water gets too hot? Thank you and praying that you catch some rain soon.

They likely get enough but they hate drinking hot water. Is the trough filled via a buried pipeline or a water hose on top of the ground?

The only green I got on my property is a hay field that has Johnson grass growing. I got about 40 rolls in the barn and 15 head. My uncle wants to cut the field for hay but I’m not sure how I feel about it. Any lil thing could set a fire off, but also since it’s my only grass growing right now I was thinking about grazing it. What are your thoughts??

I was thinking graze it, what’s left after that let it lay. Leave those roots in ground and let it cover the ground to allow any moisture we do get to be able to be better retained. Not sure if that makes sense or not. What do y’all think??

I definitely think graze it. Cows love Johnson grass and do well on it. I would go that route for sure!
