A Honda S2000 Swapped Toyota Starlet is UNREAL

- The Toyota Starlet might have been a stylish looking commuter car from the factory, but overtime it became a super light weight platform to engine swap! This Honda S2000 swapped Toyota Starlet weighs in at only 1900 pounds, and the S2000's nearly 240HP feels like more like 400HP! I've never driven anything rear wheel drive with this short of a wheelbase other than the Hayabusa Smart Car - and it was one insane ride. So what's the S2000 motor like in a lighter car? Let's talk about it.

What motor would you put in the starlet?
12A
Dude you should drive the 1999 toyota starlet glanza this one have turbo
A turbo charged miata engine with around 250hp
All Motor Only:
Honda B (rare as unicorn vomit today) or K-Series like the diamond white integra you recently reviewed. Fast road screamer setup.
4AGE: For purist reasons but same setup as above.
Ford Zetec: Mass availability in UK Ford vehicles since ‘91, decent platform for tuning, purists will dry heave till the last days of the Earth. Same setup as the B & K Series.

This model starlet comes rear wheel drive from the factory. It was the last generation of rear wheel drive starlet, then came the front wheel drive ep71 - ep82 - ep91.
Pretty common misconception since economy hatchbacks like this are typically FWD
Wait really? That’s fucking sweet!
Beat me to it 👍
The Corollas of this time was rwd too
@@odanethomas1073 I was commenting on the vehicle in the video specifically because he said "convert it to rear wheel drive" with an s2000 swap
The power:weight ratio must be crazy and it being a rwd hatchback makes it even cooler imo
Holy shit is that Da Roach dogg Jr?
What a cool build. Nice to see something different from the plethora of ls/k swaps today.
I love Dannys car, every time i see it, is stop and stare -Kyle
The editing at the beginning always gives chills
What a machine
this thing is so gnarly i love it! these starlets are pretty common here in NZ, mostly 4AGE or rotary swapped though. Highly doubt i'll find a $500 shell here sadly lol.
Friend of mine used to have an older gen one, with a Volvo engine swap, a B230F, 2.3 liter, but only around 116hp, but enough in a Starlet to have fun.
There's also a local one that show up at meets, with a 4AGE swap, now that sounds good driving along.
In a future build I plan to do is swap a F series into a MGB vert. Also very light, and RWD. Basically a recreation of the original Honda roadsters.
You do realize Honda roadsters copied the British roadsters like thr MGB, right? Like the S600/800 Hondas are recreations of the MGBs little brother.
I'm 100% for giving a British car what they've always needed, better power plants, but I dunno that using the car the Hondas copied would be a recreation of a Honda. It's some kind of paradox or something.
Good luck with the swap though, I'd love to see one. Word of warning though, like he said in the video they can be might unwieldy. A buddy of mine who drove a Triumph Spitefire (~1500 to ~1700lbs) with a warmed over Rover V8 making like 300HP said it like driving a skateboard with a Briggs and Stratton. Be safe, handle your suspension and brakes too.
I’m doing a Fiat 124

Danny is a great dude, I've seen his car at multiple shows over the years. I instantly fell in love with the car the first time I ever saw it in person. Huge kudos to him because he just got the car back together this year (built engine, new diff, among other things), so for him to have the courage to let you drive it is awesome. Love hearing those high quality fly-bys! Great video all around!
Thanks for the love!! Seeing others love my car makes me appreciate it that much more.
Hehehe luckily i do have one :)
I’m a simple man, I see s2000, I click
Edit: 1:28 David casually drives passed an s2000
Oh man love the wheels, they suit this thing perfectly. Clean build.
Love it!
My father had a Corolla KE36 from mid 70s. That had the excact same door handles on the inside.
BTW the Coralla KE30/32/36 is a great platform for swaps.
Look up the Goleby's Corolla with 1JZ. They regular drag that car.
I never thought I would be so happy to see a starlet also you should try one of the ep82 turbo ones to review but I mean that’s gonna be somewhat hard to find one because they weren’t sold in America
If the owner is reading this…… good on you for saving this piece of history
I'll keep it alive as long as I live 🤘
@@nemo2nachohow do you feel about the 2zzge engine:) Toyota vtec🤔😁
@@sezuawn3861 I've never worked or ran that engine so I can't really say how I feel about it.
I remember when GT starlet came out, single turbo it was was such fun little car. Good too see you after while and where you have elevated yourself. I used to watch your vids 7-8 years ago. All the success to you.
I think it’s fantastic, that’s very unique and that’s what I love about. A unique built that’s simple yet awesome
Geo Metro.
NOBODY would suspect it to be fast it would be the ultimate sleeper.
This is one of those “slow cars”, that would be way cooler to rip vs a high horse power straight line car.
100%
No conversion trouble, this gen was rear wheel drive like many other small hatches out of the seventies. More and more going to front wheels into the eighty's
@Daniel Hollingsworth body style started in 78 first shipped to US in 81 thru 84 then next gen in 85 went fwd. Round headlights first then update in 80 went to square
When the VTEC kicked in at higher rev ranges, you could just tell, sounded simply awesome!! Seeing the Starlet, especially an 80s one looking like that, is just really beautiful, brings me way back to the 80s. Now I can see why racers love to modify them so, here in Jamaica!! Light weight is key, and adding a really super engine, just makes it go!! Though they more use 3GS or 4AG out here in our country. Big up to this channel though.
Saw one of these with a V8 swap spin its way down the drag strip at an import face off event one time. It was crazy
Hey , men you brought good memories!!!!a friend had the same one stock and it was the only car around in NYC not getting stock in a snow storm. I miss it a lot and the body i had was an 1982 Celica with a 12 a carby rotary engine and it hauled!! That was 25 years ago and miss every bit of it and for that i got a 1992 volvo 240 wagon and swapped a 7mgte but its parked because i cant get the igniter that burned and there is my story . Greetings from the Windy City👍
I’ve seen this car in person at a cars and coffee, the guy who owns it is the nicest guy I’ve ever met. Definitely loved the car when I saw it, and would love to get my old corolla to that level.
Love seeing this thing every year at icc
Ahhhh, 1981. When I was 19 years old and life was beginning to happen.
Born and raised in Puerto Rico now living in the states,I remember Thursday nights road races and those cars with crazy engine swaps beating the crap out of V8'S it was crazy looking but ridiculously fun!!
This makes me wish cars like the Toyota Starlet,Vauxhall/Opel chevette & the sunbeam Talbot Lotus was being built in modern times. Hatchback that are light, nimble and of course rear wheel. Exciting & raw, cars that really push you to have fun.
I think a super high strung n/a setup in a cvcc with a rear drive conversion would be really cool. Stretch the wheelbase as much as possible, set the engine back as far as possible, fit the widest wheel and tire package possible, maybe chop the top a couple inches, and keep it right at 1800 lbs
I think you should start rating the vehicles you drive, do like 1 out of 10 and make different categories. Like appearance, performance, how fun it is to drive, quality of build, stuff like that.
I'm 63 yrs old and I remember that the Starlet was Toyota's way of hedging their bet on FWD craze among the OEMs here in the US though it was very popular in the Asian market in the late '70's and early '80's. I'm from Brooklyn and the Starlet was really big among the Puerto Rican and Dominican street racers of the time b/c it being RWD and little to no weight you could drop in a souped up 3TC from the AE86 Corollas with cam, heads, sidedraft carbs and headers or just engine swap with any that will fit into the engine bay and not worry about the dreaded torque steer and weak transaxles of the your typical FWD hatchback.
Gotta drive a rotary swapped one now 🔥🔥🔥
seen this thing at a couple local meets, so damn cool to see it here too
bro, when i saw this i thought you had to be in PR. we Boricuas love us some starlets
Starlets always make interesting builds. Idk if it's because of the shape or what but every time they end up being awesome
Early in the 80s In Puerto Rico. Someone had the same idea but by putting an Toyota 1.8 from a 1980 Corolla. The engine was not stock of course an NOS was used. The rest is history an for a period of time the fasted 4 cylinder on the planet. Starlet "La Genuina" The Genuine. By the way 10.99 in then 1,320 feet 1/4 mile still today INSANE. Congratulations in your projects.
2:57 I knew those seats looked familiar 🤣
If we're talking similar platforms for an s2000 swap... lightweight, high revving NA engine in a rwd hatchback.... first thing that comes to mind is an ae86.
Never knew the Starlet was made in the 80s.
I know in the last few years it came out in my country but is just a normal Suzuki hatch with a face-lift. Cool to discover the name being revived though.
my neighbors had a starlet growing up in the 80's love that car
What a fantastic idea for a swap!! Love it!!
FINALLY something that isn't a posterchild car! (Note: I understand it is difficult to review cars that are unorthodox, this is not bashing David in any way.) You see one GT-R, one Ferrari, one Camaro, etc., YOU'VE SEEN THEM ALL. I'm not denying that those cars are technological and engineering marvels by any means, but seeing the same platforms get utilized over and over again just gets dry and boring to see. That being said, you'll have to forgive me when something cool like this Starlet gets publicity and I have a bit more of an appreciation for it than some mommy-and-daddy-sponsored, quadruple-digit-horsepower Audi R8. 🤷♂ Sorry, not sorry for liking weird cars with weird swaps. Keep up the AWESOME work David! Love your content, bud!
I appreciate the love for my car! I've always wanted to be different and I think I nailed it!
I remember and have videos of this thing from a few years ago racing in 2018 thought it was super cool
Could you send me those videos 😂 id love to see some old videos of me racing
My first car. 1979 Mazda GLC. Also a hatch, also rear drive. Still waiting for my junkyard unicorn chassis...
"I'm gonna be shifting slow so don't hate"...proceeds to shift like a normal human
Wow a whole new world of builds I’ve never known about… giving me ideas
Vauxhall/Opel/Chevy Chevette or a Chrysler/Talbot Sunbeam Lotus with a high revving, all motor B18 or F20 (if you can find the cars first then the engines).
Nissan Micra/Cherry K10 with a CA18DET & AWD to keep things planted on the road.
Mk2 (2nd Gen) Ford Fiesta with a turbo Zetec or a Mk7 Fiesta ST 180 swap. AWD.
KP61 Starlet + S2000 VTEC
I think this guy is genius👍
My first car was a 81' Civic hatch. Lately I have been thinking about how fun one would be with a K swap.
ok boomer !🤣
K24 with K20 heads lots of VTEC
Man that thing looks like a blast to drive
3:26 Heall yeah brother!! 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Puerto Rico en la casa babyyyy 🔥
That intro song took me back to middle school bro. A certified Monstercat hood classic.
Believe by Trivecta
I bought a 82 starlet in 98 for 50. Dollars.. truck driver drove past it stopped offered me 1000. We loaded it up and mexico is supposably where it went . All original Manuel drove it one time. Cool little rwd. Never seen another one since.
Awesome Video man!!
That big front bumper is HIDEOUS!!! 😂
David: (hyping up the EG/EK hatches)
EF Civic: AM I A JOKE TO YOU?
Yes, I have one. Lol. It might have VTEC as well. 😉
Loving Danny's car.
I wonder if sticky 🤔 tires in the back would make it less sketchy on this platform
Amazing car perfect drive to work and back car 🚗 👌🏽 🙌 😀 👏
An underrated platform, that is very rate these days
I used to own a 1984 Honda Accord Hatch with a manual. Always wanted to put a high revving engine in it. I got mine when I was in the Navy back in 04 from a guy in VA beach for only 500$. It ran great for a carbonated engine.
With a rollcage and some more supportive mods they rock at the track
I had a 1980 starlet and swapped the original 2k engine for a 5k engine, and it was a beast (back in the day and in Costa Rica)
He said "the weirdest thing of all, it's rwd"...where tF have you been bro?...... 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
The weight balance of my S2000 is what makes it special. The Starlet is cool, but very front heavy in my opinion
I had an '81 Starlet 5-speed when I was in highschool, I miss it to this day.
Geo metro convertible.
Although the swap I would like is the Buick encore AWD power train. ABS ,traction control, stability control and aftermarket paddle shifters.
A vtec motor in anything under 3000lbs is fun. The F22c in Datsun 510 station wagon would be rad
You just made the starlets prices rise by 6k again.
Saludos desde Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 Gracias José 🇵🇷👍👍👍👍👍
him saying VTEC made us all so happy
He was like "vTeC 🥴" 😂😂😂 5:34
Honda VTEC engine and ol skool Toyota chassis best combination. Back in the day Always wanted to do a Trueno Ae86 with s2000 f20c swap ect...
I'd drive the snot out of that thing! Looks like a literal ton of fun. Very cool!
i drive ur mom
an S2000 swap in a Chevy Chevette would be awesome, or like a LUV pickup, one of those crappy late 70s GM compact vehicles with an S2k motor would be so fun!
I had one of these with 4agte around 300hp and about 750kg. Everything was custom and it was an extremely nice car. Also check out starlet cup
I never knew I wanted a starlet that is clean
Lovely! RWD Starlet is the best.
Had a 3S-GTE EP71 it was nuts as well 😀
I wish you can build as project and then post it in a series. That would be really dope.
I have a suzuki samurai shell that hopefully sometime next year it should have a k series in it🙏🏻
Oh and of course im from 🇵🇷🤣
That’s a crazy combo! I bet it feels SO WEIRD lol - cool a$$ setup though I love it
Reducing weight and adding power is always the winning equation. Wins every time 🤷🏼♂️
The best street racer car in Puerto Rico to mod
Love it.
I was always sus of the short wheel base and RWD.
I also imagined that this would be sketchy - but I've seen plenty of KP61 drift builds. BUT I just looked it up, and the wheelbase is 2 INCHES LONGER THAN AN AE86? [EDIT: no that's the wagon my mistake - its 4 inches shorter.]
The EG has a 101" wheelbase, thats very long for a small car, so it would not be bad for RWD conversion in that right. It would be longer wheelbase than a Foxbody Mustang.
I had an Opel stationwagon when I was young. Would have made amn excellent host. Very stable platform. Drove surprisingly well. Probably early 70s model.
Right when I was about to do my homework you posted lmao
Love this swap! Ivé seen this guys youtubevideos before and saved them for future dreamstarletbuilds :) Best possible swap this. Either this or an 4AGE Blacktop.
Thats a crazy VTEC crossover
My friend had a tubbed rear end, KP60 starlet here in New Zealand with a Lexus V8 ( 1UZ) I do love the kp62 though as I prefer the 4 door. Hi from New Zealand!!! ❤
I love it seen a few go side ways ..as far as putting a S2k engine in to something id love to put on in a Triumph dolomite its a old uk car with lots of character and RWd
Bloody heavy old motors but I have to say the sprint was a lovely looking thing in its day
Starlets are super popular here in NZ. But they command a premium because so many were flogged in rally
The fact that you go, "o I get it, that's why they don't sell one of these....." That's the kind of thing I want to drive
That would be fun! I have an 81 & 83 corolla and I can't wait to finish the sr20 na notchtop swap in the 81. I think an s2k swap in a corolla wagon would be awesome, but you'd have to figure out a better solution for the stock rear leaf springs.
There have been quite a few honda hatches converted to rwd over the years. I remember a guy with a EK rwd swapped with a LS in it of some sort ( I know it was from a zo6 just don't remember which year ). Was nasty , there should still be videos of it on UA-cam.
My dad had a Starlet when I was a little little kid in the early 90s.
Honda + Toyota is a great deal.
What a powerhouse 🙂
Dope!! I’m trying to put a fully built k24 in a 1991 Ford Festiva very similar chassis, Should make some serious jam once I get the funds together for a decent turbo kit.
You should do a Starlet GT Turbo or a glanza review!
That’s rad!!! Vtec poppin!!!
