Thank you, Bigad and the entire NBC Bay Area team, for this incredibly informative series! The BART issues needed to be investigated and I’m glad you’re keeping BART’s leadership accountable. Keep these reports coming!
Julio Chavez When cities get dirty from litter and crap who is to blame? People who litter? Or is it the people who are supposed to clean the streets and sidewalks? 🤔 So why blame BART for crimes committed by the public? Accountability from passengers side is the main issue. Bottom line.
Planning to visit San Francisco from Seattle. Seattle has its own issues. The Mayor & City Council face serious problems from big companies pulling out of Seattle because of the lack of homelessness laws not being enforced. It just took time for everything to hit a braking point. The damage is done. Until the California government, SF Mayor, & the City Council enforcement laws nothing will change. Tourists, such as myself, will never return to an unwelcoming city. I currently face security issues with public transit and hotels. It came as a shock. How much San Francisco has changed. Will I ever return to visit? We’ll see. But there are a lot of different websites & UA-cam videos exposing issues. For every negative experience 1,000’s see it.
The lack of money in society to fix failing infrastructure and crucial public services is the biggest excuse we make to ourselves in America. $150 million? Are you kidding me? That is chump change for big tech.
BART, what’s the likelihood that I, a working college student, would be arrested for eating a donut & drinking a coffee that I bought from a cafe at your station? While the unhygienic homeless person peeing themselves on the seat of the train & has been switching between cars to sleep on them for the whole ride gets a pass? Hygiene is a safety issue that the police need to enforce & should be a bigger violation than eating that BART forgets about. I’m only okay with more police if they are going to go after people who actually are causing a violent or unhygienic problem that threatens safety of riders.
I remember a time when I went on Bart and some Homeless person Stunk so badly everyone for 4 rows in front and back of him, Nobody was sitting there. Isn't that kinda of extreme? And why didn't any Bart police officer do anything about it? Luckily I got off on the next exit, But he smelled so Bad, he stunk up the whole car. Did anyone else experience a situation like this?
Andrew Anderson I’ve witnessed this so many times. It’s to the point where I even know some of their faces because they are still wearing the same thing that I saw them in a week ago, smelling either the same or even worse. It’s disgusting & BART doesn’t even bat an eye.
@@AcutestripeZ Yes, But it's a very unhygienic situation, because the simple fact that you're inhaling the Fecal matter odor and piss smell. How does Bart let this happen? Besides he was probably a gate jumper too😠😡
Andrew Anderson BART simply doesn’t care or know how to tackle hygiene issues because they obviously see it as a low priority. They also might pity these people, but that honestly doesn’t do any of their other customers like myself any good. They only act on violent crime because it’s highly easier for a customer to win a lawsuit against them for them neglecting to act on a violent crime versus a customer complaining about unhygienic homeless riding on every train until BART closes since the fact that they are homeless attracts pity. They need to just be strict on them because at this rate, BART trains are homeless shelters where everywhere is a homeless person’s bathroom. I believe a class action lawsuit about their poor hygienic policies that they allow homeless to bring is the most doable way to get BART to act, but the community has to come together to do that.
The decision not to go with an NYC style barrier to stop fare evasion is a half-measure and failure of leadership. The new gates will be inadequate and will have to eventually be upgraded later.
this general manager doesn't look like he is going to solve much... I bet it is going to be the usual costly and ineffective changes, you know how it is. BSing his way into a nice tax-payer funded pension.
He sounds like he doesn't want to even acknowledge the problems let alone work to try to solve them. Look how he tries to dismiss the number of violent crimes simply because people are being mugged for their cell phones alongside the other violence done to them. He thinks it's unimportant if you get your $1k cellphone taken from you violently on the train but he's obviously concerned about making sure all parties involved have paid BART their fare first.
How about reducing Power’s salary from 400k to 70k with no benefits (good luck with finding an affordable health care plan) until problem is fixed. These people are ripping off tax payers. Who votes for their salaries?
Bart authorities are too busy policing the permit parking lots for money from people who actually pay fares. I have been riding Bart for 10+ years and can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen cops standing at West Oakland station watching people walk through the emergency gate and do nothing. BART station agents would see fare evader and they do nothing about it. I guess union bargaining says they don't need to respond to that. Which tells fare evader that they can do as they like, so long as those 11 fare inspectors are not around. Perhaps time to renegotiate what station agents supposed to do?
I think that it should be a requirement for BART Executives to ride the train to and from work atleast 2 times per week and they should be required to wear a name tag and have designated seats so that passengers can post on a website when their seats are vacant. Trust me if this requirement was made they wouldn't seek the job and if they accepted the job things would improve because their safety and well-being would be on the line.
Entities like BART never put their money at the core of where it's needed. A good percentage of their budgets actually go to highly paid, top administrators who do nothing but have meetings about how to fix the problems within their given system. But, largely because these highly paid, top administrators usually don't have a CLUE as to how to fix problems, the problems not only don't get fixed, they just continue to escalate. Plus, their (over) salary compensation takes away from the money that needs to be allocated to help fix the problems. And, why WOULD they fix it? The vast majority of riders who use BART on a regular basis only do so because they feel BART is their best (sometimes only) option. The BART powers that be know this. Who in their right mind would take BART every day if they had ANY other viable option?? BART administrators aren't fooling anyone - all they REALLY care about is their own, fat salaries, perks and stock options. Notice how they always have an immediate answer for everything, no matter what the question is? Smoke and Mirrors 101. Now, let's talk about enhancing my compensation package.
So 21 million lost in fare evasion and it would cost 150 million then payback is just over 7 years. And that doesn't including damage and keeping a lot of the thieves out. Why not those metal cage turning doors and another type for the disabled, the same height so that people can’t jump over it, the spinning cage doors would actually have an effect in stopping people
I live in the Bay Area . I’ve rode Bart once and said never again. I’m in my 30’s and all I can say is you can getaway with anything you want around sf as long as it’s not murder or armed robbery. There’s no consequences due to the fact we are a sanctuary state and have been. Been watching everything be degraded since the early 00’s. If the state didn’t put up with it maybe there would be less craziness / drugs and Violence
Wow, this guy does not seem at all qualified to run a transit system. He meets with his chief of police once a week? That should be an ongoing discussion for a system of that size with those problems on more than a once weekly basis.
BART is so bad, I had to stop riding. Too many people living on the trains smoking weed and meth. I have even seen people shooting up. There is Human excrement between the cars and on escalators. Crime is so bad I carry mace and sometimes a stun gun. I live in Richmond and switched to riding the ferry to SF for work. It’s about 50% more, not counting to cost of driving to the terminal, but that’s how bad BART is.
When cities get dirty from litter and crap who is to blame? People who litter? Or is it the people who are supposed to clean the streets and sidewalks? 🤔 So why blame BART for crimes committed by the public? Accountability from passengers side is the main issue. Bottom line.
Please also discuss the incompetency of bart engineers and mechanics!! Delays and constant breakdowns of escalators are unacceptable. But hey, I get it. If I'm in charge of escalators, I'd maybe purposely make them break over time for job security.
Lol that’s funny but a good point! I read somewhere that those guys who repair the escalators are in high demand right now... the older guys are now retiring and nobody wants to learn a skilled trade like that. I hear they pay pretty well though.
So fare jumpers cost $25 million per year but the new gates would cost $150 million? How about you stick with the gates you have and deal with fare jumpers instead?
TBH not sure how the gates will help when so many people just use the "emergency" exits. Those aren't locked or have alarms enabled on them - seen it a thousand times how people used them.
@@KeepinItRealAllDay You feeling butt hurt? Yeah, it's one single cost. No kidding! Even if the new gates are 100% effective it will take six years to realize the value on them. Learn basic forethought and imagination.
Each Bart Station has Police, just have 1 cop stay in the booth or stand by the exits. Or maybe they're too busy watching the homeless sleep and get high on the train and in the stations. The Bart operators stay on the train for their shift, why can't 1 officer stay on too? The cops don't want to wait by the exits and don't want to ride Bart to stop crime and vagrancy, remind me again why they're getting paid again?
What you described is basically a security guard. That's way different than a cop. Less expensive would be to have a couple QUALITY armed security officers patrolling the stations 24/7. It would be more cost effective because they don't get paid much lol and they can dispatch police asap when something cop worthy occurs
It might be a good idea for the Bart Police to not wear uniforms. If they are dressed like everyone else and blend in, they would have a better chance to see what people are really doing.
Wow this train system's administration is ineffective. I live in japan and take the trains to work daily. And there is none of these problems here when using the japanese trains.
Its sad that people here behave so badly that we need all these fixes. In Tokyo Japan, the most densely populated city in the world, their subway system is on time, clean and people are profoundly more respectful to fellow riders. In many ways, people are faulting BART for societal problems.
I've been to Tokyo many times, and I'm amazed how clean and considerate they are to others. Even the homeless won't bother you. Well at least that was my impression when I was there.
Lund3000 bc Police are busy stuffin they faces and sittin in they cruisers jackin off outside or away from the stations, nuff said bc i grew up in Oakland
And the buskers/entertainers have got to go. On the streets and in the stations, they're ok. You can pass by if you don't want to listen to them or watch them. In an enclosed train, you have no choice but to withstand their auditory pollution.
BART cops do not ride the back of the trains after 9pm at night when their actually most needed but they've been seen harassing passengers regarding food and drinks rather than the purposes of protecting and safety from violent crime. It's a never ending cycle someone is going to get hurt if nothing is done soon. For many people they have to ride the train to go to work and face this stuff. Don't expect a change regardless of how optimistic Mr.Powers is this has been going on for years.
And I only see Fair Checkers in the morning so if they have that big of an issue then they would do it throughout the day even if it ended up on random trains at random times at least more people would know that they might be around. Maybe they would think twice.
I go on the BART once a year, max twice, and every single time I've been on bart, either a homeless person came to every single person on the train including me for money, random people that didn't even know each other were arguing ferociously, and/or people were doing drugs, were shirtless and inappropriate in public, etc. Frankly it's very uncomfortable and scary when a huge man is asking you for money in an enclosed area and you have to share a space with them for 15 min to an hour. Also, I would like to emphasize that all of these trips were in the day time! The BART is still unsafe whether night or day, and I live in a pretty safe neighborhood, yet these kinds of things still happen an my station. Also, I HAVE NEVER SEEN A SINGLE POLICE OFFICER EVER ON THE BART. NOT EVEN ONCE. FRANKLY THEY COULD BE NONEXISTENT! EVEN ON BUSY STATIONS OR UNSAFE ONES THAT I'VE GOTTEN OFF AT I'VE NEVER SEEN AN OFFICER. I'M JUST MAD THAT MY TAX MONEY IS GOING TO THIS NONSENSE THAT IS NOT BENEFITING ME IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER! ALSO 19 OFFICERS?!?! R U KIDDING ME THAT'S LITERALLY NOTHING. THIS IS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING YET I'M NOT SURPRISED. THE "BOARD" REALLY NEEDS TO STOP MAKING EXCUSES AND START DOING THEIR JOB. ANOTHER THING, THE TICKET PRICES ARE WAY TOO EXPENSIVE FOR STAFF TO BE THIS LITTLE. IT'S JUST TOO EXPENSIVE FOR THE EXTREMELY TRASH QUALITY EXPERIENCE AND I HAVE TO GIVE HOMELESS PEOPLE WHO CORNER ME, MONEY TOO ON TOP OF THAT! I AM SHAKING MY HEAD.
150M to add big plastic gates... how much to just have someone at the station watching the gates and when someone pops over gates you call the "never around" Bart PD.
So I'm just back from a trip to San Francisco and as a tourist I'm glad I never went near the BART. Feel safe? Doesn't even come into it, the system doesn't look safe. It looks dirty, it looks UN kept and it looks like a breeding ground for trouble. Wheres the staff at the gates who will hold a train in the station until the fair evaders are out of the station? Where's the cctv audio announcements reminding people they're being watched? Why isn't there better lighting at crime hotspots? I get it, California has issues it is going through now and what happens on the BART is just a representation of the outside world, but there's more that system could be doing, but doesn't. When I arrived the news was saying about the death of a guy who lost his life because he tried to stop an incident. The tv news was full of the line "we can't have police on every train" but the thing is, you don't need police on every train, you do need a system that invests time and effort into the safety of its users. Put in help points on trains where a train can be stopped and an incident death with, ensure there's staff at every station and that they're able to deal with all types of incidents. For what people pay, the system should already be giving better.
I had to get on the train to the city a day after a man was killed one station away very nervous I kept myself on guard at no time did I see Bart police officers going into the city are coming out of the city I passed several stations not one officer I find it ironic that Bart has a police staff that drive cars that are supposed to protect people on trains
You know an agency is full of it when the General Manager and Police Chief have been on the job less then a year. My heart goes out to California. It's like they're ruining Cali on purpose.
I saw a man have his phone stolen by a group of kids. When they tried to grab it and he didn’t let go they dragged him to the floor where he was kicked in the head and punched knocking him unconscious. I called bart and there was nothing they could do because the criminals targeted the person right before the tube giving them time to escape before police could even talk to the victim. What worries me with the ease of crime happening on Bart is that it serves as a crime training ground for criminals due to the lack of policing .
Architects should be forced to live in the buildings they design, children’s book authors should be forced to read their own works aloud every night for the rest of their rotten lives, and public transit administrators should be forced to ride all the public transport vessels for which they [get PAID to] oversee.
ShakespeareCafe I think they might include lost potential revenue from the people that don’t ride because of the scofflaws. I saw a guy smoking something and it wasn’t weed and I started taking Caltrain instead. Though I think some routes are better than others.

The B.S. Numbers are lies, so BART can increase the Fares and distract from the FACT!, of their dereliction and stupidity, If 10,000 people per day, where jumping the fare gates. That is nearly equal to every man, woman and child, living in Walnut Creek and Dublin, Ca. jumping the gates EVERY YEAR! This a continuation of the Lies of everyone at BART, trying to keep their high paying jobs
Great series. I have never seen BART police riding the trains at night. How come they don’t use undercover officers? you should have asked Bob (general mgr) if he would let his kids and wife ride BART on their own at night.
Hahaha BART spent all that money when VTA doesnt spend all that. VTA is better. BART is obsolete. You’ll see improvements once BARTs on its last few years of operation... then bulldozers.
How could transit system in China could be much safer cheaper effective and faster! It’s the issue with the people there. My friend was sent the hospital because she got punched by a homeless on the bart.
he must don't ride bart daily. i ride every day and it is always something going on on bart. between the aggressive panhandling to the horrible odor from the homeless who we as regular riders know they have not paid smelling up whole train cars to regular drug usage. i'm so happy to know that all of us who ride daily to and from work are very happy that this is what our tax dollars pay for. it does not matter what time of the day or night the same things are always going on. the only time i even see bart police or far officers is when something has happened and the news has got wind of it. they are as bad as ac transit.
Bart should hire a private security firm to provide security in all Bart stations during hours of operation. Bart Police should only be used to respond to serious crime. The province of Madrid, Spain dose it and cops are only called when needed. But every station has a couple security guards(all from the same company in all stations) that shoe away the homeless and the drunks and to snatch any would be farevader. Also, they act as the first responders on the scene when anything serious happens, instead of waiting for the police to show up, lord only who knows when. And all at a fraction of the price of having an actual California sworn in Police Force.
I freaking Loooove this peace k wish this was a every day every week segment on this news channel I would watch it every day. So many issues that are not addressed and or not being handled by bart
Hopefully when the gun rights case that the Supreme Court is hearing right now is done, they will rule in favor of gun owners. Then hopefully it will become legal nationwide to carry a gun. If people are armed on BART and the criminals know this, crime will drop. It won't go to zero, but it will get reduced. "An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life."~Robert A. Heinlein
Get the gates that N.Y.C. MTA have then have fare inspector guard the gates with the station agents and work with Bart police and local police and sheriff's. Bart is not safe from anything or any other crimes and bio terror and need new divisions for Bart police like a real police department. Plus have Bart work closely with local police and community and more at the airport and downtown Bart stations and big events. Maybe more Bart extension to other places like Bart Millbrae to Santa Clara Bart and Bart to San Jose airport and Bart to Gilroy and Bart to Livermore and Modesto and Bart to Davis and Santa Cruz and work and Bart facilities and that will get it on track. New cars are nice but how about station renovations and new better clean bathrooms and more fare machines and business and services nearby by at the stations and fire and hospitals of new designs and variety in the stations. New better working elevators and more better access for Handicapped and elderly people to get around better in the stations for safety and protection. Help services and nearby medical staff and Amazon nearby services and customer services centers. ATM and more better face recognition cameras of security and office and Janitors to clean daily the stations to be more organized and professional and new Bart development within the system and outside the Bart system to plan better for future Bart and new stations and so much more of better ideas.
In São Paulo Brazil they even have a gate that opens automatically when you insert your ticket or scan your card. There's also guards watching people who's paying. That just shows you how Bart is terrible.
I would like you guys to dive a little deeper into their spending bc I feel they’re lying about how much they actually have, I know now they’re publicly funded as well

BART GENERAL MANAGER MAKES $400,000 A YEAR. WTF??!!
That Bart manager makes $385,000 a year and a Bart officer makes about $110,000 a year
They can collect as much as $110 million dollars a year

It’s been 3 years since post this videos. Still crime has been skyrocketing more than ever
Nothing changes !!!
In SYD jumping a turnstile is a $250 fine but how could they get money from Bay Area homeless?
in my observation, they do their fare checks on the same trains & at the same times every day. seems like a good way to help fare evaders.
If you don't look at crime as crime, then there's less crime. It must be nice to be afforded the privilege of making up your own reality.
that was so ridiculous trying to not include crime in crime stats

They are policing violent crimes. They stopped that black guy from killing that sandwich didn't they. LOL
lol this guy looks like crispin glover's willard.
People are NOT safe on bart. It is dirty. Homeless people are allowed to sleep on the trains. Who is in Charge????
Democrats is in charge .., Working people pay their fair, the welfare people walk through the gate without paying any, and homeless get in to sleep
You are in charge. No one is in charge. You have to be your own first responder. Watch yourself and each other. Be safe and good luck!

This is worst part of bart that affects EVERYONE
Everyone who was in charge of Bart looks highly questionable. They all look like bad guys who laugh when the cameras shut off
So fare jumpers cost $25 million per year but the new gates would cost $150 million? How about you stick with the gates you have and deal with fare jumpers instead?
TBH not sure how the gates will help when so many people just use the "emergency" exits. Those aren't locked or have alarms enabled on them - seen it a thousand times how people used them.
New gates is a FIXED COST. Please learn basic economics
Swing doors wont stop folks from just walking through the emergency gate, smh. Incompetency all around bart.
Also if people follow you in with swing door gates those gates stay open. Like MUNI
I suppose it is a societal problem
I've been to Tokyo many times, and I'm amazed how clean and considerate they are to others. Even the homeless won't bother you. Well at least that was my impression when I was there.
How does MARTA police in Atlanta have 400+ officers yet BART only has barely 200?
Lund3000 because its atlanta, not shithole california
Lund3000 bc Police are busy stuffin they faces and sittin in they cruisers jackin off outside or away from the stations, nuff said bc i grew up in Oakland
Budget
And the buskers/entertainers have got to go. On the streets and in the stations, they're ok. You can pass by if you don't want to listen to them or watch them. In an enclosed train, you have no choice but to withstand their auditory pollution.
If I just pulled all the murders on BART from the stats...that black girl killed MacArthur station would still be alive!
I was punched randomly by a druggie. Please don't take BART.
Good mini series but the due was hard to stomach.
Narcs
I had to get on the train to the city a day after a man was killed one station away very nervous I kept myself on guard at no time did I see Bart police officers going into the city are coming out of the city I passed several stations not one officer I find it ironic that Bart has a police staff that drive cars that are supposed to protect people on trains
You know an agency is full of it when the General Manager and Police Chief have been on the job less then a year. My heart goes out to California. It's like they're ruining Cali on purpose.
Demographics are destiny. No white republican voters and this is what happens. Non whites can not maintain white civilization.
Many Californians enjoy this type of lifestyle. It shows with the direction of their voting.
Why can’t BART introduce a flat rate fee?
How's it related to the problem at hand? Charging by distance is a common practice. It makes sense to charge more those who use it more.
Because then the flat rate would be like $5 for going like two stops and that doesn't make any sense
Why should I have to subsidize your ride from Fremont when I'm only going 2 stops?
Lmao dude I’m from the bay, and I like you man 🤣🤣 keep doin what you’re doin💯 ☮️
Bart is not safe!! Just saw a person on Bart get jacked. Heard a person got jilled
Wait, doesn't WMATA use the same gates as BART's old ones?
Alvarez seems slow.
Architects should be forced to live in the buildings they design, children’s book authors should be forced to read their own works aloud every night for the rest of their rotten lives, and public transit administrators should be forced to ride all the public transport vessels for which they [get PAID to] oversee.
$25 MILLION per year in lost revenues is $68000 a day. If the average fare is $6 there's 10,000 fare scofflaws per day which is simply UNACCEPTABLE
There's no way a private company running BART-like transport would allow any of this to happen.
Great series. I have never seen BART police riding the trains at night. How come they don’t use undercover officers? you should have asked Bob (general mgr) if he would let his kids and wife ride BART on their own at night.
Kids maybe, wife I doubt. He better stop smoking crack....
Hahaha BART spent all that money when VTA doesnt spend all that. VTA is better. BART is obsolete. You’ll see improvements once BARTs on its last few years of operation... then bulldozers.
Imagine if folks raised kids with morals and principles. Bart might not have these problems.
1 inspector per every five trains on routes, make it like POP on Caltrain.
The bart cop voice reminds me of chumlee from pawn stars
all the bart big wigs need to ride the trains for 9 weeks and see how they feel and eat lunch and sleep on the trains
La Keale Cass “he must don’t ride Bart” 😂
La Keale Cass *he doesn’t ride Bart daily*
Just like everyone else in California’s top positions, these guys are so delusional!
"these are all prototype" 😂😂😂 wow
Great series
Bart is dirty beacuse homeless and expensive too.
Sharp Blades 6ft tall please
Bart should hire a private security firm to provide security in all Bart stations during hours of operation. Bart Police should only be used to respond to serious crime. The province of Madrid, Spain dose it and cops are only called when needed. But every station has a couple security guards(all from the same company in all stations) that shoe away the homeless and the drunks and to snatch any would be farevader. Also, they act as the first responders on the scene when anything serious happens, instead of waiting for the police to show up, lord only who knows when. And all at a fraction of the price of having an actual California sworn in Police Force.
The crime statistics and any statistic can be altered by the definition and categorization of the statistics.
I freaking Loooove this peace k wish this was a every day every week segment on this news channel I would watch it every day. So many issues that are not addressed and or not being handled by bart
i lw be hopping bart but why dont they j raiuse the gates ots stupuid j do what caltrain does
Just give up.
Good series! Well done...
barts got problems, but man is this a hit piece
Nothing hits harder than the truth ✊
They have the money from leasing to developers who are building housing around bart stations. Smh.
Welp that means that the price will go up 10 dollars just to go a few stops.....
The only way these issues will be fixed is with vigilante justice. But no one really wants it fixed. They just want to complain.
Heinlein
Bernard Goetz was seen as a mad man shooting petty criminals in the New York subway during the 80's.
@@daigomori7374 True as international transit seems better than the U.S..
I would like you guys to dive a little deeper into their spending bc I feel they’re lying about how much they actually have, I know now they’re publicly funded as well
