    The answer is clear... at this point in time, NOTHING duplicates the sound of a vintage full tonewheel Hammond console coupled with a good Leslie speaker... they get close, but it's just not the same. Even the new Hammond electronic consoles fall short... even Hammond can't match "The Hammond Sound" with their own clones! Nice chord progressions, man!

    • @prestige2000rider
      @prestige2000rider Рік тому +1

      Exactly ! The Hammond Sound is part of the acoustic nature of the Instrument itself. The emotion and tone from all that wood and how it meets the air. Much the same as how Digitals have tried for yrs to Duplicate the Sound of a 9' Steinway. Well they got the sound almost perfect, but fall short on the Emotion and sheer acoustic output of the instrument itself. Its what happens between the instrument and the air itself is how it gets its color and body.

    I've had 3 Hammonds with Leslie's going back to 1965, so I'm very familiar with the Hammond sound. But now living in a small apartment, it's impractical to own one. So I got a Ventilator about 5 yrs ago to use with my motif keys and my Crumar Mojo organ, and it's so close to the real thing - more than good enough when you can't have the real thing! By the way, I believe the Mojo has the best Leslie digital simulation of all the clones and you have extensive abilities to edit and tweek it.

    Sounds good to me. People get to caught up in comparing the two when they're not meant to be. Nothing can beat a mechanical hammond coming through a mechanical Leslie. BUT.....nobody's moving a full hammond setup from their church or studio to go run and do a theme and two. That motif and neo with the right speaker setup (maybe two powered speakers) is obviously the more practical thing to do for a quick gig on the go

    Every time I watch this demo, I think, "Wow, that Neo sounds really good!" Best emulation I've heard... but then I hear the real deal, and it's no contest. The Hammond w/ a Leslie even without being 'pro' mic'ed is the CLEAR winner. That's not a slam against the Neo, but rather a credit to how unique the Hammond / Leslie combo sound is. Difficult to reproduce!

      @@danaowens30 I've played the A100, L100, M3, B3 and C3... and they all have a unique tone, even with the same Leslie. Similar, but unique. Change the Leslie and it's a different tone again. I've also tried the Nord through a Leslie, GSI VB3, and most recently the IK Multimedia B3X, and they are very similar...but still fall short in crosstalk, percussion, harmonics when changing drawbar settings... However, your experiences may lead you to a different conclusion. IMO, it's the combo that makes the sound, not just the Leslie. Cheers!

    I've got Hammond clones and Hammond plugins that sound absolutely amazing - very very authentic, I've worked hard to get decent EQ, drive, Leslie etc. sounding fantastic, hell even experienced producers have complimented my 'virtual' Hammond sound. Lets face it, real Hammonds are a pain in the ass to maintain, record or gig with. But then I go back and sit at a real Hammond/Leslie and think shit man - I need a real Hammond in my life!

      ????Pain in the ass to maintain?????
      A few drops of oil, once a year.
      Solder a wire once in a while.
      Find a good service tech and the old Hammonds will run forever. I own and regularly play a Hammond built in 1938!
      Sure, they will need repair once in a while, but it's very rare to find one that is in regular use, and been properly maintained, that cannot be fixed. Many organs that have not run in 59 years, can be resurrected.
      And, I can still find parts for Hammond organs that were built 85 years ago.
      In my experience, with any clones, or other digital synths, if you get 15 years out of it, you're doing really good.

      @@scottbc31h22 If I could find a great tech within a couple of hundred miles that would be great but I'm in the UK and experienced techs are very rare. I recently contacted 4 different UK techs about a C3 I wanted to purchase (I wanted a service and some mods done) - and none of them even got back to me (service is poor here). I've just had to send my 147 amp 400 miles to a great tech to get some work done as I can't find anyone reliable closer to home. So when I say 'pain in the ass to maintain' I guess it depends where you live.
      By comparison I contacted a couple of US techs/moders and they got back to me immediately and were super helpful. The service is night and day between the UK and US.

    The Motif through the NeoVentilator sounds really good (it's your playing:) but the Hammond has a richness and depth of tone that is really on another level. My opinion. If you're using it for gigging, the Motif is a lot less to carry and set up...and playing like yours is going to sound great no matter what.
    The Motif might be only a little bit of bass boosting away from the Hammond sound.

    Gigged in rock bands for many years with my Hammond M 100 and Leslie 147, you needed a crew and a truck. Now I use a Roland VK8 clone wheel thru a stereo amplifier, Trouble free and not weighty. Sounds great in a combo situation. I would say to any young guys starting out to get a clone wheel if you intend to go out on the road.

      Why do you think those things are dragged everywhere? For looks? The public has no clue. They know few of the hammond greats. This video shows why we are starting to see more of the real thing, not less. On so many levels the sampled clones are feeble, except for the ones that cost as much as a real one. They are still behind, but so easy to move, the lazy factor wins out.

      Most people in blind test will tell no difference b/w Hammond and simulation, especially in the band context, when organ is mixed with overdriven guitars and such stuff. There is story about Andy Giddings (former Jethro Tull keyboardist), who used mockup "organ" made from two VK1000 boards, enclosed in custom wooden case, vaguely resembling B3. Even Keith Emerson himself was fooled, and asked Andy "what model of the Hammond do you play?"

I currently use a Motif ES6 on all of my gigs in addition to a Roland XP-60. I haven't been able to conjure up a great organ sound that is somewhat convincing. Please share your wisdom.
      Thank you

    Sounds like another simulator to me! Let him (rarely) spin it up fast and hold a chord hear here how bad it sounds- wack a wack wack. That Hammond sounds huge even with him trying to mud it up. Ha ha ha!

    Nope sound totally different. When the leslie switch is on, on the organ, the volume stays constant and to speed of the spin is not too fast where it causes the vibrato that's over powering like the motif. When its off, motif has a double chorus effect especially in the high register

    You can tell the difference as soon as you play the HAMMOND. Hammond cannot be recreated thru a NEO VENT II or any other Pedal. IT is just not the same.

    Hammond also have the 9 busbars that add subtones to your playing. There's also the real Doppler effect with air spinning throughout the room.

    in terms of sound, no contest...motif can only go so far.... hammond can go all the way. depends what you need to accomplish musically. in terms of what will inspire you more????... sit yourself between 2 leslies and do the comparison. also, which one will still work in 50 years? hammonds are built to last. what can you buy today that will still work 50 years later like hammonds do?

  • @PaulTheSkeptic

    It all depends. Do you have roadies? Is the instrument going to sit in a church or whatever, not to be moved? Back in the day, some of the jazz guys would have to take their Hammonds into some of these small clubs in New York. I heard one story where the club was so small, they had to drag this thing over the bar just to get it inside before the people got there. So, if you're doing that kind of thing, there is no question really. You go with the compact option. But, if you have the means, I think that people will appreciate not only the sound but the look of a real Hammond organ with Leslie speaker. Maybe even make some jokes about how hard this thing is to move so if you're digging it, maybe keep the tip jar full.

    • @EmmanuelArtistry
      @EmmanuelArtistry  7 років тому +3

      Truth! Its hard to choose. I would definitely gig with motif/ventilator combination. But like you said the organ has a look you can appreciate, as well as different functions such as the vibrato and chorus etc.

    • @barneyrubble152
      @barneyrubble152 6 років тому +4

      Yep in my view this is not an 'either or' conversation, hauling my old Hammond and Leslie up flights of stairs to gigs was just insane - this instrument was never intended to be moved around. I use a Hammond XK5 and Ventilator these days, and while quite obviously not the real deal is the practical gigging solution.
