De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is pretty much the best black metal album ever done. It perfectly captures the essence, the atmosphere and sound of the genre.
I'm sorry but there is so much better black metal out there. This is the blueprint sure, but it doesn't even come close to Emperor, Windir, Obtained Enslavement, Burzum, Negura Bunget, Marduk, Summoning, Tsuder or Ulver etc. Mayhem are influential but not peak.
You are a young metal head, in some years you´ll be blasting this whole record until you can´t remember how many times have you ever listened to it. I´m sure about that... lml
The hate in the comments on the stream is funny lol. To say Amon Amarth are overproduced is just a bad take on the sub genres of metal. Go listen to their early work and tell me it’s overproduced. It’s as overproduced as Mayhems stuff after Dead. Black metal isn’t the same if it doesn’t sound like it’s recorded in a basement on a $2 microphone…..

I waited for this reaction since a while, I’m not disappointed 😂😂😂 The vocals on the album are not so bad, it’s done on purpose like a zombie trying to sing after death. You should listen to eponymous song, the last where he mocks a catholic priest singing, it’s hilarious and disturbing at once. Again, it’s on purpose. 👹
Mayhem "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas", along with other masterpieces of Norwegian black metal from the first half of the 90s: Darkthrone "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" (this, for me, is the most badass band of the second wave of black metal), Immortal "Pure Holocaust", Burzum "Burzum/Aske"...
I'm a huge death metalhead. I did a DM fanzine many years back and I pretty much listen to DM a lot more than BM on a daily basis. Having said that, I'm just as much into black metal and I never understood this moronic divide. The biggest simps in your chat are obviously among these moronic death metal elitists and it's affecting your own experience trying to decipher if you're into any particular track or album, since you feel like you have to laugh it off alongside them. It's kind of obnoxious, as others before have pointed out. But it is what it is.
Yes, sometimes it can be a bit much with the woodshed vibes lol. But overall, it's just a certain vibe and sound and it takes time to get used to. I enjoy the instrumentation of it and Dead is a superior vocalist out of these two versions. But I'm definitely a recording snob. I like having clearer production and sound quality for most of my music.
I wish people in the comments knew that they are meant to hate it since black metal is made to be as unappealing to the average listener as possible I also didint like it at first when I listened to it when I first started listening to metal and I started with nu so I was like “wtf” but when I kept coming back I started to understand it and not only do I like it it’s one of my favourite genres. Also I like the vocals I love how disturbing a zombie like it sounds but definitely not near dads level
I think mysteries dom satanas is like the cumination and the blueprint for all black matal after it. Especially the early stuff. Where low production was a key aspect. Because black metal came about as a kind rebelion against a lot of the (especially american) death metal. Cuz everything had that overproduced Morrisound studios sound. If you go back and listen to stuff like Deicide, Canibal corpse, Death, Obituary and Morbid angel. They all have thst same sound. With thr extremely padded base drums, so they dont sound like base drums. This is especially true for the early 90s when black metal becomes a thing. So they wanted to go back to making something less polish and production. More like you'd hear id you went to rehearsal with the bands. Mysteries is thr culmination of that. But the recors didnt get what it deserved due to the surrounding drama Ps: There is a quote that has become like an unofficial mantra for black metal. Its by Fenris (From Dark Throne) and it goes: True Norwegian Black Metal. Recorded, mixed and mastered within 24 hours
You have the nerve to trash both versions, then ask which people like better? How about you get your own taste, preferably in another genre. I think the most hilarious part of this is the fact that Attila is a classically trained singer who has done opera and musicals. "Sounds like King Diamond if he couldn't hit the notes", no it sounds like he was going for sounding like Dead and pulled it off near-flawlessly. Atilla is actually throat-singing most of this album, which is an insanely difficult vocal technique, whereas Dead was just screaming. There is no short amount of Mayhem songs with Atilla singing clean vocals, most of the later Maniac era had cleans, which Atilla sings live just fine. He's also provided cleans in many other bands and projects.
Late to the party, but I think Attila's vocals on Freezing Moon are just very different from the person the song was written for. He came from Hungary to perform on the album and then heard nothing because he only had the contact information for Euronymous and Varg lol. Atilla came back to Mayhem for their last few albums and the songs written for him are much better imo.
yeah, i totally get where you're coming from. attilla's vocals are very hit or miss, simply because they are so extreme. glad that you enjoyed the rest of the music.

True, that is probably a better a more accurate description of the capacity to appreciate it. Mayhem, specifically Euronymous, created a new riffing style which the extreme metal scene sorely needed due to oversaturation of death metal at the time. But 2nd wave BM didn't find their vocal style totally by this time. It needed something that was as extreme as death metal, but still held onto the Venom/Celtic Frost vocal style. That's where Atilla's style came from. Not to sound like a cow anymore than Chris Barnes was trying to sound like cookie monster. But Some of the humor isn't lost on me. 2nd wave BM came out right at the cusp of the internet and no social media.
