      Hi Juan,
      Ian from Perth Western Australia, really enjoying you coverage of Oroville and have been watching the events from the start.
      You're doing a great job. Also enjoying coverage of the place you visiting as a pilot! Would like to see more if you're able? I suppose time is limited on turn arounds.

    Juan, you are doing a fantastic job as a citizen reporter. I'm easily 3,000+ miles away on the East coast and not the least bit impacted by this situation, but you have me continually awaiting new information via your dispatches. I feel more informed about the situation at Oroville than I do my own community. Keep up the good, thorough work. 👍🏻

    Thanks Juan! You are a light in the darkness. At high rates, the water moving over the top of the downslope will be like air over a plane wing. I hope they consider the cavitation.

    • @bobsmoth7837
      @bobsmoth7837 7 років тому +2

      Way to gradual a change in slope for the speed its going. It's only about 50 mph. You wouldn't "catch air" at that speed

    • @JimConnelley
      @JimConnelley 7 років тому +7

      Next time you're in a really fast speed boat put your hand down in the water. The chaotic layer at the water-concrete interface is going to be pounding the concrete with destructive forces.

    • @reverseengineer5365
      @reverseengineer5365 7 років тому +8

      Cavitation happens when there is little to no air bubbles. This spillway does not get cavitation as the turbulence adds plenty of air bubbles. Cavitation is when air-less water that is rushing through a tunnel or tube lifts and forms a vacuum then slams back down onto the surface with high impact. You can see it at work at home. Fill a glass bottle to 90% capacity, hold tightly and smack the top of the bottle hard with your hand. The result is a vacuum at the bottom of the bottle as the water lifts. The glass will break there.

      @joinedupjon 7 років тому +4

      Agree jim, high velocity water can be very destructive. I'd ask why they aren't considering slowing it down with baffle blocks on the steep section. This would be less likely to cause failures in the channel and any failures that did occur would be less catastrophic as the water would have less kinetic energy. KE is proportional to v squared.
      it's alright saying 'we'll maintain it properly this time' - the maintenance will eventually be cut again as the people who remember dealing with this failure retire and the effects on the civilian population pass into distant folk memory. better to design it to be more intrinsically safe from the get go imo.

But, when you make a decent wage, what does your free time become worth? If you are really good at something your audience should help foot the bill. That is if you appreciate the work done.

    This update had some meat on that bone! Interesting, several future video topics/questions to consider... 1) Maybe breaking down the construction process a bit. That was a lot to take in. 2) So will they remove all existing concrete in the upper and lower sections and replace completely? 3) Maybe some more detail on RCC, it's use, how it's laid down, etc. 4) Juan's magical 3D model built on his table top...showing a step by step progression of the construction. (Yes, I have all kinds of ideas to spend your time. ;-) 5) Discussion about the lakeside of the dam wall, it's condition, quell any rumors about undercutting. 6) Follow up story on turbines...the old being replaced with new. What do the new models look like, benefits, cost of a turbine these days. It basically boils down to this Juan, we either generate ideas for you or this comes to an end. From what I've seen, folks don't want it to end. I know I can't bear to think about that reality. The price of stardom I guess. You have had your contract renewed for another 26 episodes, congratulations. More work, same pay. ;-)

You spend the time to research every video, you supplement with DWR footage when you know you can't get the footage necessary to demonstrate the points. One bit of confusion is that Ms. Cuttle and Mr. Croyle presented slightly different contingency plans with regard to lower MSW.
    Paraphrased:
    Cuttle: (about 15:25 into conf) Contingency plan is to Buttress the bottom edge of the upper MSW, plunge pool and eroded area.
    The areas that are deemed safe for continued use through next winter will be reinforced and more robust permanent features built at a later time.
    If this option is pursued then rest of construction would be completed next season (summer 2018).
    Croyle: (answering Q at about 41:25) "fill up plunge pool with RCC", ... (minute later) build up lower MSW to handle 100K, with contingency to spill it over the side into the natural erosion channel, then finish build up of lower MSW in next construction season.
    Personally, I think the first is more likely than the second, but we'll see.

    As always, 'our man at the scene' giving us the information needed to be up to date. Thank you my friend.
    One thing I'm surprised at is they don't treat this like any hole in a road (pothole) and just fill the hole and re concrete it and maybe the whole slipway… they could of course forget the lower slipway repair and just re-enforce the 'earth to bedrock' part of the new canyon. If the new canyon is solid enough just make a wall to stop the earth from eroding, at least this will last longer than human will on this earth! LOL
    Again, thank you for your updates 👍🏼😊

  • @bobsmoth7837
    @bobsmoth7837 7 років тому +7

    Good plans......RCC ( Roller Compacted Concrete ) is basically standard concrete with less water so its stiff. Sounds like they're going to fill those holes with RCC rather than stone. That's going to be basically bedrock as the base of the spillway. Shotcrete is also very similar in consistency to RCC

      Couple of thoughts on construction....... Cemexusa has some great youtubes on RCC. .....A portable plant can mix 600 tons per hour. that's 60 truck loads per hour, one per minute........There was 1.7 million yards washed down the hill into the river. Assume half has to be replaced to fix the spillway. the rest is canyon. That's 850,000 tons or 1417 hours or 60 days. .....It's going to take some work to get the people and equipment in place but the timeline is doable

    • @rickgreen9936
      @rickgreen9936 7 років тому

      Once the "pour" starts does it have to be continuous to avoid cold joints? If so, 2 patch plants in the event a plant goes down? Feeding a plant(s) to maintain that quantity is going to be a logistic challenge also.

    • @bobsmoth7837
      @bobsmoth7837 7 років тому +1

      cemexusa has some good youtubers on RCC. You can get an idea how long between pours, how much they can put down an hour, the equipment required. I just used the info to do a rough calculation......The plan as presented is the 60% engineering plan. The drawings still have to be prepared. We don't know how deep the holes are ( plunge pool etc ). I'm going to guess that they will wash and crush some of what they dug out to build a foundation that they can work on. EG. if the pool is 50 feet deep they my fill in the bottom 20 feet with crushed fill ( compacted of course ) to build a level surface that they can then install the RCC on 30 feet thick. That's not all RCC but it would still be good by the time California slide all the way up the coast and becomes part of Canuckistan. ......We've been shown a plan that still needs to be fleshed out. What I've seen gives me confidence that they can meet the time line and do an excellent job. Time for us armchairs to get out of the way.

    Dear Juan:
    saw most of your fantastic videos and comments on this damm. From the beginning, it was quite clear the low flow of the spillway compared to the hidrographic basin area, even with the emergency spillway, but i suppose that is out of the equation now, unfortunately. My questions as a civil enginner, are mainly two: first, the spillway location absolutely perpendicular to the normal bed of the river; this unables a proper spill into the river , not disturbing its flow, but also increases the debry deposit uphill the river, acumulating material enabling the river's proper flow and use in full of the power station. Second, the lenght of the spillway; i never saw such a big spillway with 1.5 km long, expecting to have a laminar flow, without turbulence. As you know, it's turbulence that causes erosion, and no concrete or diamond made spillway will stop turbulence. Spillways are made to direct water as short as we can, releasing it from contact with our infrastructure; and when there is turbulence, we throw water in the air, to loose power. Feel free to comment if you wish. Best regards from Portugal.

    Well it looks like trusted and previously used methods are the first choice on this job. I have to credit them for working at both ends towards the middle plan. More hands will make things go quicker. I wonder if the water authority is thinking about building a viewing platform or designated overlook for people to watch the project getting built. Washington State Dept. of Transportation built a viewing platform near my old home in Aberdeen, where their contractors were assembling the new Lake Washington Floating Bridge. The platform gave curious onlookers the opportunity to view the entire process. It was also worth its weight in gold for the PR value!!! Just a suggestion....🤔

    Thank you Juan for the top class reporting. I especially respect the approach you take for clarity. I have quite a few questions. However I'll finish up with this thought. After all of this documentation I sincerely hope you copyright these documents and post reconstruction assemble the video and questions into an engineering class 'review' for educational purposes.

    I have always thought using fly ash from coal fire power plants to produce autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) to be a good use of an industrial byproduct. However, after reading about roller-compacted concrete (RCC), which also uses fly ash, I have concerns about heavy metals in the concrete leaching out. It will be interesting to see how heavy metal levels are affected.

    It's going to be interesting to see how much involvement those of us here in Indiana will play with regards to the rebuild plans. We have ramped up truckloads of steel blooms to 30-trucks per day for last several weeks so the steel mill west of Indianapolis is well stocked for the manufacture of steel rebar on a massive scale. I just cross my fingers and hope we get to play a part in the re-build. As for the last video it showed just how thin the concrete was in the upper section which might've led to the destruction of the spillway which is now the plunge pool. Hopefully they will be smart this go round and make the concrete as thick as an airport runway which is four feet. At this point money should be no object or limitation although in the end someone has to pay for it but as stated, this work to come needs to be future proof and be able to withstand the goal cfm of 270k. This is their chance to get it right.

    Juan, several people have said on other channels, maybe this one too, that the gates to the spillway are decayed, I don't think so, they seem to function fine but was there any mention of replacing those? Perhaps they would replace them anyway since they seem to be planning a much higher potential outflow? As always you're are doing a great job and if I had some extra money at this point I would kick you some. You're providing an excellent service to us all for free and you should get at least enough to defer your costs. I think it's also interesting to note that the new design seems to be intended to handle enough flow so that the emergency spillway is never needed. Even so, they are beefing up the emergency spillway nicely. As an Engineer, I'm pretty impressed with this effort, what do you think? And lastly, is there any indication that the main dam broken interior concrete barrier repair is leaking at all? A few years ago there was a couple of reports about that internal barrier moving and cracking causing some leakage but repairs were made by pumping concrete underground that supposedly worked, but others on UA-cam "claim" that it is still leaking? Maybe the information officer could clear this up? Thanks a million.

    Gotta love that the cause will not be given out to the public and I'm betting any of that info that does come out it will very limited blaming no one or perhaps the old methods used at the time of construction. I'm sure it will not mention any of the inspection prior to the event causing the spillway fail. It would be interesting to find out what the cost would have been to fix all the issue prior to the failure and what it's going to cost to fix it now.

      I believe that you will find that modern technology has developed concrete which stabilizes much faster than it used to. Combined with modern application processes and you can build concrete very fast. i.e. the Burj Khalifa was built with a concrete core which had a new floor poured over the previous floor within a day or two of the last pour. The base pours were holding up the entire building within just a short time of being placed. Plus that concrete continues to build in strength for years, even decades or centuries to come.

    Once again, good job. A little disappointed that it sounds like the report on what caused the accident will be sanitized. Guess it will take a freedom of information request to see the actual report, but then much may be redacted if it indicates liability on the government's behalf.

    back when this all started the aerial image showed a trench trace coming from the west towards the spillway, going underneath to the service road cul-de-sac. They knew something was up in that area yet only patched the cracks. It should have a regular schedule of using GPR the entire length of the spillway to find any cavities forming under the spill way. It's obvious in the location of the conduit passing under the spillway formed a sizable cavity that eventually lead to the failure. GPR would have saved a lot of headaches and costs.

    there are 4 sections to this. upper spillway, lower spillway, the new canyon, and emergency spillway. if i were the DWR, i'd have all 4 companies do one of each. company 1 does upper spillway, company 2 does emergency spillway, company 3 does the canyon, and company 4 does the lower spillway. 4 projects going on at the same time.

    Juan, they apparently have mentioned several times that the Emergency Spillway is not to be used again. It would not have been used now if the inspection and maintenance of the Flood Control Spillway had not allowed it to fail. Have they said ANYTHING about how they are going to change that so the Flood Control Spillway does not fail again???? Great report as always, thanks.

    Thank you so much Juan. Perhaps the DWR could invest in a microphone for the audience so listeners could actually hear the questions asked. With all due respect, they don't appear to be treating everyone's concerns with in depth responses. Could use someone with excellent PR skills to communicate the vital information and reassure not just the people who live downstream, but all of us for whom a dam failure would have a profound effect. Without you, and having to rely on DWR's sporadic and less than in depth analysis, we would know next to nothing. You are very diplomatic in your assessment of their communications, but there may be a time when you have to call a spade a spade. Adding secrecy to the mix when peoples lives, jobs and property are a stake does not serve any of us well. Greetings from North Central Washington,

    Interesting part about the release of the findings. The only reason that it would be released by the sheriff, a law enforcement agency, is they know or suspect part of the cause could be considered criminal. The sheriff is responsible for issuing citations and presenting the "evidence" to DA, who then determine what, if any, charges will be prosecuted. This does NOT mean the ones responsible for the criminal activity had intentionally endangered people or property. Negligence could be possible though. (This comes from someone, me, involved in public safety.)

    ....3:22....'cut off wall'....kind of reminds me of levee work here in Sacto a few years ago....they used bentonite and excavators with 65 foot arms and 16" wide buckets to dig about 50 feet down , along the center of miles of levees.....then filled it wait bentonite
    They had to do it twice...the first time was about 30 feet deep, and water leaked under that, developing 'boils'.....
