  • This album is an undisputed classic. It also doesn't sound that great in its most readily available form currently. The version on the band's label is the terrible "secret remaster" version that they did in the 90's when they acquired the rights to their songs. This is an attempt to rectify the situation.
It was a bit of a bear to mess with this album. Sides A and B sound drastically different mix wise. I used a pretty light touch with compression here simply because if you overdo it on the side A songs, they lose all life. So I erred on the on side of caution with that. its still nice and thick, but its not modern in any sense of the word other than the fact that I used a multi band compressor at one stage. I also tried to keep limiting to a minimum so as to leave the dynamic range intact because I feel the dynamics of this album are one of its strong points. As such, this remaster is not crazy loud. That's fine. Turn up your volume you lazy punks. That's why you can adjust it! The biggest change comes in the form of modernization of the EQ curve of the album to something more along the lines of metal that you hear today. It took a few tries to find a good curve that worked for all the songs, but I think I managed well and feel this album now sounds more like the classic it is.
All remastered music posted here is for the purposes of entertainment and experimentation only. I am simply exploring modern mastering techniques and their effect on great albums from various eras. I love these bands and their music and am in no way seeking to monetize anything about this. All rights are with the original artist and no infringement is intended.

At 47 years old, I can honestly say this entire album sounds as bad ass as it did when I first heard it in 1986 when I was in the 6th grade. Thank you Metallica, for being there for me when I felt so alone in the world.

Could only offer 1 thumbs up for this comment. I first listened to this as senior in 86', boom box jacked into the aux on my parent's Pioneer SX-9000 receiver. It was mind blowing! Funniest part of it all .. my sister gave me the cassette and said, "Hey, listen to this". Back to the point, I agree it is still fierce all these years later and I'm 52.

Same story, i.e. 47 years old and hearing it the first time in 1986.
The moment I decided this was the music I'd (probably) be listening to the rest of my life. 😎👍
(Remembering having goosebumps from the acoustic Battery intro untill the last notes of Damage, inc.. 😮)

I truly hope everyone out there is doing OK. Cause it's not been OK here for quite some time now... wishing all well. Things need to get better. Cause what's happened I cant even begin to try say how corrupt its been. And for speaking the truth yet. ✌️🇨🇦😔💔 I'll copy paste what I wrote in last thing.. lord bless us all please. And what I wrote down as well. ua-cam.com/play/PL5-WwSKoJOe_7QCNqx-8ryFOSmuZOpwxH.html
Dear lord you know what's been said. Whether out loud or in our heads.. we know who's high and all mighty. As we know you have the power to make what's been wrong for too long, right. Grant us the strength to try stay true, for no one knows better then me(we) n u. Bless the years that's been lost and I'll pray for the pain endured by those that need, 2 b cured. We the children and yet to learn how others hatred and etcetera sets the spark for all to burn. I hope u hear this in time, before more time lost. For some, that time was what's no one can understand what's 1's cost. Protect our women and children. And may those that steered us wrong have a change of heart and remember the goodness in memories lost.. U gained a soldier, but I am only 1 man. In a world that's been lostThat's from the heart this morning. Amongst another of things I won't ramble on about today cause it falls in deaf hands or something is just fggggd up here. Buy I know currently I am at a loss of words how it's been hard to try stay focused on what I feel a man in my shoes is hated on more for not yet falling completely to the negativity that's rewarded it would seem.. that's all though. Sorry if sounds lame or off. But not gonna pretend otherwise. Cause who would? Anyone wants to guess what I titled my book I wrote? Maybe one day it'll get published. Cause the pain endured is real.. cheers all. And to those that take or took the time to read thank you. Shout out from lloydminster Canada. 🇨🇦 (may not feel as good as once thought, but don't mean I'll give up on what to me is right. Cause if it's true how not being true outweighs values morality and ethics. Everything I thought I knew sums up to be a huge waste? Maybe this will speak out to some but lately more n more seems less to none.

In 1986 here in Chile played the entire album on a radio station one sunday afternoon, the next day after school, I bought the LP and BANG MY FUCKING HEAD! I was the first from my school to have the disc, which allowed me to lend it for a few days and to receive many other discs in exchange to record them on tape.

18, i grew up on this shit, i love it more now that i can actually appreciate everything alot better than i could when i was little. Funny story tho; Metallica was supposed to be playing at the Chesapeake arena in OKC, my mom ended up getting to watch on the 2nd balcony and my dad was down by the stage lmao. Anyways my dad got way drunk before metallica even came out on stage and i think tool was on before them but he threw his solo cup full of, beer on the stage, and just so happen it flew perfectly through the air until it landed on all the electrical equipment and delayed the show 30 or 45 min lmfao, he didnt even get kicked out because of that. Sherrifs came down there because he flicked a cigarette in a womans hair and they asked him if he wanted to say anything to her and he goes "yeah... FUCK YOU" then thats when the officer goes "thats it youre going to jail" lmao he didn't even get to stay long enough to watch metallica

    ALL LYRICS:
    1. BATTERY
Lashing out the action, returning the reaction, weak are ripped and torn away
Hypnotizing power, crushing all that cower, battery is here to stay
Smashing through the boundaries, lunacy has found me, cannot stop the battery
Pounding out aggression, turns into obsession, cannot kill the battery
Cannot kill the family, battery is found in me
    Battery, battery
Crushing all deceivers, mashing non-believers, never-ending potency
Hungry violence-seeker, feeding off the weaker, breeding on insanity
Smashing through the boundaries, lunacy has found me, cannot stop the battery
Pounding out aggression, turns into obsession, cannot kill the battery
Cannot kill the family, battery is found in me
    Battery, battery
Circle of destruction, hammer comes crushing, powerhouse of energy
Whipping up a fury, dominating flurry, we create the battery
Smashing through the boundaries, lunacy has found me, cannot stop the battery
Pounding out aggression, turns into obsession, cannot kill the battery
Cannot kill the family, battery is found in me
    Battery, battery, battery, battery
    02. MASTER OF PUPPETS
End of passion play, crumbling away, I'm your source of self-destruction
Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear, leading on your death's construction
Taste me, you will see, more is all you need, dedicated to how I'm killing you
    Come crawling faster (Faster)
    Obey your master (Master)
    Your life burns faster (Faster)
    Obey your master! Master!
Master of Puppets, I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name 'cause I'll hear you scream: "Master! Master!"
Just call my name 'cause I'll hear you scream: "Master! Master!"
Needlework the way, never you betray, life of death becoming clearer
Pain monopoly, ritual misery, chop your breakfast on a mirror
Taste me, you will see, more is all you need, dedicated to how I'm killing you
    Come crawling faster (Faster)
    Obey your master (Master)
    Your life burns faster (Faster)
    Obey your master! Master!
Master of Puppets, I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name 'cause I'll hear you scream: "Master! Master!"
Just call my name 'cause I'll hear you scream: "Master! Master!"
    (Master, master, master, master...)
Master! Master! Where's the dreams that I've been after?
Master! Master! You promised only lies
Laughter! Laughter! All I hear or see is laughter
Laughter! Laughter! Laughing at my cries
    Fix me!
Hell is worth all that, natural habitat, just a rhyme without a reason
Never-ending maze, drift on numbered days, now, your life is out of season
I will occupy, I will help you die, I will run through you, now I rule you too
    Come crawling faster (Faster)
    Obey your master (Master)
    Your life burns faster (Faster)
    Obey your master! Master!
Master of Puppets, I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name 'cause I'll hear you scream: "Master! Master!"
Just call my name 'cause I'll hear you scream: "Master! Master!"
    03. THE THING THAT SHOULD NOT BE
Messenger of fear in sight, dark deception kills the light
Hybrid children watch the sea, pray for Father, roaming free
Fearless wretch, insanity, he watches lurking beneath the sea
Great old one, forbidden site, he searches, hunter of the shadows is rising
    Immortal, in madness you dwell
Crawling chaos, underground, cult has summoned, twisted sound
Out from ruins once possessed, fallen city, living death
Fearless wretch, insanity, he watches lurking beneath the sea
Timeless sleep has been upset, he awakens, hunter of the shadows is rising
    Immortal, in madness you dwell
    In madness you dwell
Not dead, which eternal lie, stranger eons, death may die
Drain you of your sanity, face the thing that should not be
Fearless wretch, insanity, he watches, lurking beneath the sea
Great old one, forbidden site, he searches, hunter of the shadows is rising
    Immortal, in madness you dwell
    04. WELCOME HOME (SANITARIUM)
Welcome to where time stands still, no one leaves and no one will
Moon is full, never seems to change, just labelled mentally deranged
Dream the same thing every night, I see our freedom in my sight
No locked doors, no windows barred, no things to make my brain seem scarred
Sleep, my friend, and you will see that dream is my reality
They keep me locked up in this cage, can't they see it's why my brain says: "rage"?
    Sanitarium, leave me be
    Sanitarium, just leave me alone
Build my fear of what's out there, I cannot breathe the open air
Whisper things into my brain, assuring me that I'm insane
They think our heads are in their hands but violent use brings violent plans
Keep him tied, it makes him well, he's getting better, can't you tell?
No more can they keep us in, listen, damn it, we will win
They see it right, they see it well but they think this saves us from our hell
    Sanitarium, leave me be
    Sanitarium, just leave me alone
    Sanitarium, just leave me alone
Fear of living on, natives getting restless now
Mutiny in the air, got some death to do
Mirror stares back hard, kill, it's such a friendly word
Seems the only way for reaching out again
    05. DISPOSABLE HEROES
Bodies fill the fields I see, hungry heroes end
No one to play soldier now, no one to pretend
Running blind through killing fields, bred to kill them all
Victim of what said should be, a servant till I fall
Soldier boy, made of clay, now an empty shell
Twenty-one, only son, but he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care, do just as we say
Finished here, greeting death, he's yours to take away
Back to the front, you will do what I say, when I say
Back to the front, you will die when I say, you must die
Back to the front, you coward, you servant, you blind man
Barking of machinegun fire, does nothing to me now
Sounding of the clock that ticks, get used to it somehow
More a man, more stripes you wear, glory seeker trends
Bodies fill the fields I see, the slaughter never ends
Soldier boy, made of clay, now an empty shell
Twenty-one, only son, but he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care, do just as we say
Finished here, greeting death, he's yours to take away
Back to the front, you will do what I say, when I say
Back to the front, you will die when I say, you must die
Back to the front, you coward, you servant, you blind man
Why am I dying? Kill, have no fear
Lie, live off lying, hell, hell is here
Why am I dying? Kill, have no fear
Lie, live off lying, hell, hell is here
    I was born for dying
Life planned out before my birth, nothing could I say
Had no chance to see myself, molded day by day
Looking back I realize, nothing have I done
Left to die with only friend, alone, I clench my gun
Soldier boy, made of clay, now an empty shell
Twenty-one, only son, but he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care, do just as we say
Finished here, greeting death, he's yours to take away
Back to the front, you will do what I say, when I say
Back to the front, you will die when I say, you must die
Back to the front, you coward, you servant, you blind man, back to the front
Back to the front, back to the front, back to the front, back to the front
    06. LEPER MESSIAH
    (One, two, one, two, three...)
Spineless from the start, sucked into the part
Circus comes to town, you play the lead clown
Please, please, spreading his disease, living by his story
Knees, knees, falling to your knees, suffer for his glory, you will
Time for lust, time for lie, time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green, heaven you will meet
Make a contribution and you'll get a better seat
    Bow to leper messiah
Marvel at his tricks, need your Sunday fix
Blind devotion came rotting your brain
Chain, chain, join the endless chain, taken by his glamour
Fame, fame, infection is the game, stinking drunk with power, we see
Time for lust, time for lie, time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green, heaven you will meet
Make a contribution and you'll get a better seat
    Bow to leper messiah
Witchery, weakening, sees the sheep are gathering
Set the trap, hypnotize, now you follow
Time for lust, time for lie, time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green, heaven you will meet
Make a contribution and you'll get a better seat
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie!
    07. ORION
    Instrumental
    08. DAMAGE, INC.
Dealing out the agony within, charging hard and no one's going to give in
Living on your knees, conformity or dying on your feet for honesty
Inbred, our bodies work as one, bloody, but never cry submission
Following our instinct not a trend, go against the grain until the end
    Blood will follow blood
Dying time is here, damage incorporated
Slamming through, don't fuck with razorback, stepping out? You'll feel our hell on your back
Blood follows blood and we make sure, life isn't for you and we're the cure
Honesty is my only excuse, try to rob us of it, but it's no use
Steamroller action crushing all, victim is your name and you shall fall
    Blood will follow blood
Dying time is here, damage incorporated
We chew and spit you out, we laugh, you scream and shout
All flee, with fear you run, you'll know just where we come from, damage incorporated, go!
Damage jackals ripping right through you, sight and smell of this, it gets me going
Know just how to get just what we want, tear it from your soul in nightly hunt
Fuck it all and fucking no regrets, never happy ending on these dark sets
All's fair for Damage Inc. you see, step a little closer if you please
    Blood will follow blood
Dying time is here, damage incorporated

“The thing that should not be”. The last song written for the album, influenced by the works of HP Lovecraft, made to balance out the faster songs with a slower, heavier, grungier (beautifully grungy) sound, which it does masterfully. A song I believe deserves more credit. A song that to me will never grow old. And one that in 1986, was ahead of its time. The album in its entirety, was ahead of its time.

I got to see Cliff play on this tour in 86, they opened for OZZY at Cardinal Stadium, Louisville, Cliff actually had a hand in saving my friend, she was front row seat right in front of him. This drunk guy was harassing her during From Whom the Bell Tolls because she accidentally bumped him and some of his beer spilled. It got really intense. Cliff saw it motioned to her to see if she was ok, when when Angie shook her head no, he motioned to the security guard standing near me. The guard turned and as the guy's fist was coming toward her face, the guard grabbed his fist and hauled him out. After a quick thumbs up between her and Cliff to say thanks and she was ok it was a great show. It all happened so fast, but I never forgot it.

Metallica did better with Ride The Lightning and Kill Em All in my opinion.

    • @brandondickie3456
      @brandondickie3456 2 роки тому +12

It is without a doubt a masterpiece. It has every right to be in the library of Congress, and I admire it so much and place it at the top of their discography because throughout the entire album, Cliff, through both his bass lines and his overall contributions to the songs, to me doesn’t sound like the Cliff from the first two albums. He sounds like a supernatural entity that was completely unrestricted, fully unleashed, and ready to take no bullshit. I feel that if anything, you could possibly change the album title to ‘Master of Metallica’. Because in my opinion, because of how much he taught James, Kirk and Lars, how well versed he was in music theory, Kirk was too but not nearly as much, MOP is the moment they showcased what they learned during Kill Em’ All and ‘Ride the lightning’, what they were capable of at full power, and ultimately, they made an album so beyond our understanding that we might not ever truly define its meaning. I don’t think it’s the ultimate album of ‘Metallica’, I’d say Ride probably is. I don’t think there’s a category to put Master in. I feel it’s an album even beyond what Metallica was capable of. It sounds like something Mozart, Beethoven or Bach would write, or someone beyond them would write.
That’s just how I feel, sorry for writing a 5 page essay. This album just changed my life in a way that none of their other albums, which I think are best ranked individually because each one could split the earth in half with their power, never really did. Once I’m older, it could always change, but right now, if this was the last album I ever heard, or Sanitarium was the last I heard, I wouldn’t be disappointed.

    • @psychotictactoe
      @psychotictactoe 2 роки тому +9

@@brandondickie3456 I agree wholeheartedly, Burton got into his stride here and its astounding to hear a band that all grew and stepped up because of it.
I always imagine what Metallica would be now if he hadnt left us, more progressive? More death metal? Would the Black Album ever have appeared and if not would they be as big as they are now?
Funny thing is that i really like the Justice album, i love the riffs but many people state that album as the beginning of the end? To me its heavy as hell, more so than Puppets!

    • @brandondickie3456
      @brandondickie3456 2 роки тому +4

@@psychotictactoe I think they would probably be more progressive but in a way I think it’s impossible to really imagine where they could’ve went if we hadn’t of lost Cliff. I don’t think AJFA would’ve happened or at least their release after Puppets probably wouldn’t have been that heavy. I think AJFA was brought about mainly because of the grief and the pain from losing Cliff, it was like an entire album of pain and aggression and rage, and completely warranted. I adore AJFA and it’s actually my personal second favorite album but it might as well be on par with puppets, but I adore it because of the rage and the pain infused into it. I believe grief and emotions can be interpreted into many forms, and to put it into music form is a beautiful thing I think. Sometimes it can be a detriment, like how a bodybuilder fighting a martial artist would be slowed by their mass and brute force, the brute force of music can be detrimental, or if refined, a benefit. And AJFA to me is refined brute force. When I’m lifting weights, AJFA makes me go primal. It’s amazing.

    • @brandondickie3456
      @brandondickie3456 2 роки тому +1

I’ll get torn to shreds for this, but to ME, just TO ME, MY own OPINION…. I think Master of puppets and AJFA both have shared qualities of maturity and professionalism, and to me, what kinda puts me off of RTL is it oddly sounds to me like it’s discussing dark themes, such as death and depression, in a tone or key that sounds a little bit too upbeat and teen-like. I give it a pass with KEA because it’s their first album and they were very young, but at the same time, I think the themes of the songs are perfectly simple and they match the key of the songs, but with RTL, with the exception of fade to black and Call of Kthulu, I think the subject matter is too heavy and dark for the actual music/instrumentation. It sounds like happy young adults having fun, whereas with Master and AJFA, even in the case of Hetfield’s vocals, those two albums sound like they were written by serious, professional, structured musicians who were angry as if their character was called too childish, and they wanted to show what happens when they clean up their tone (Mesa mark iic+ rhythm guitar tone and recording the parts slower, speeding it up to sound like it’s in regular tuning to help with tightness), and get serious about things. It all depends on how you look at it, and my opinion, honestly doesn’t mean shit, I’m just one person among about 7 billion others. I’m not singlehandedly going to change existence itself or change history.

I was a Metallica disciple...my last heavy metal concert being Ozzfest in Hartford CT in Aug 2001...where I left that life behind and limped back to my roots becoming a member in good standing again in the LDS Church (I went inactive beginning with the 1986 concert). During those years I lost a child to SIDS and that child's mother later to cancer...I now live a very rewarding life that I feel is much more beneficial to me and to my family. I am in no way blaming the music or the bands for the rough times because even though I wouldn't go back to that lifestyle, I would not trade the wild fun and memories from those years...I still get an adrenaline rush just thinking about it all while writing this. There are many good heavy metal bands, but Metallica is BY FAR the best...RIP to those days, but thanks for the memories, and the lessons learned...😎

Nothing but mad respect for the dedication and sacrifice this band made to bring some of the most powerful songs to life and into reality. I have no doubt there were times when eating was a luxury and sleeping was as rare but the music stayed true to its vision and for that reason I am humbled every time I listen to this album from start to finish with no breaks. It reads like a Pulitzer Prize novel and should be recognized as one of the greatest contributions to our time. I’m not sure if other fans feel the same but it’s like listening to it for the first time every time, more exciting than the last and wanting more but entirely satisfied in the end, sitting in silence for a moment with so much to think about, so much to do about what’s fucked up in the world; even today. A well written tome of brilliance in a dark time where the human spirit toils with unrelenting suffering; there is but one answer “get up and do something about it!”

Each Metallica album is great in their own way, IMO. The first four are indeed classics. The Black Album is pretty basic but still amazing. Load and ReLoad are nothing the same as their thrashy roots, but the sound is very mature and seasoned, and the songs have a lot of emotion and feel to them. I like me a little Blues-Rock every once in a while. St. Anger is for sure kind of unprofessional and demo sounding. But it is raw, heavy, dirty, angry, and very emotional. I relate to the songs a lot. And the snare never bothered me. I really love the snare TBH. Death Magnetic shows a little less passion than their earlier thrash songs, but it is fast and energetic, and very intense. And people complain about the production quality. Like, why? There's nothing wrong with it. "Oh, it's too loud". So? People like to listen to Metallica songs at high volumes. I swear, die-hard Metallica fans are always coming up with dumb excuses to not like a post-1991 Metallica albums. Hardwired... To Self Destruct in it's entirety is no where near thrashy, and it's kind of boring TBH, but it's production quality is great, and it's still heavy as fuck.
