Personally, I don’t know why Alaric and Caroline get so much hate. She didn’t have a choice about the pregnancy when the twins were magicked into her. She had to go down this path and so did Rick. I know it’s weird because of him having been her history teacher but the circumstances were totally out of their hands and they made it work. That’s why I always liked them because they took such a horrifically difficult situation and did what they could together. I see a deep friendship love there more than anything. It’s quite beautiful actually.

Organically they are fine in the mental age bracket and not to mention they had way better chemestry because of the vastly different personality traits, they can play off each other and there's so much room for character development and attachment to the characters. From the story perspective it's way better to put her with klaus because it can progress the story, alaric just leaves it stagmented and stale because (like elaina and stephen) the only way for them to play off each other is to create conflicts in their relationship which is basically the only thing the writers are good at in this point (example; the entirety of elaina and Damon's relationship) because caroline is to sweet and compassionate and alaric is to similar. It doesn't work logically and fictionally in the series and this is why so many people dislike the couple.

The writers don't know how to write actual drama and plot between characters so they just throw issues into their relationships to make it seem like they know what they are doing.
