When a guy gets experienced, you do want to throw the mitts directly at his head, so you can simulate a more realistic fighting situation. Obviously you can pull your punches, but he should be getting an authentic look. I like to throw a lot of looping rights, because in the street that the most likely punch you're going to see.
This was a great video. I hit a speed bag for fun. My sister wants to get in shape so I need to get her hooked immediately. I'm going the a punching bag and have been thinking of using Mitts.
Thanks for commenting; I think you are definitely on the right track. I always found that the focus mitts were a great way to get someone into boxing Good luck with your training :)
In 'Punching and defense' section, it looks like you're tapping puncher's elbows to remind him to keep elbows in, but I'm left guessing since you are only talking about touching shoulders when you are doing this. Why would you want to practice only dodging hooks? Seems to me that dodging overhands and uppercuts are just as effective as dodging hooks.
For hooks, Mike is not holding the pads to point at center of puncher's chest, as he says. It is very clear at 4:34, even as his voice-over is saying this, that his pad surface is pointing almost directly to his right (your left), nowhere near your chest. If he means fingers (not surface) pointing toward chest, the same image shows fingers well pointing above your head. Similarly, for upper-cuts he says "slightly towards the floor" but the pad surface is very much towards the floor-- nearly horizontal (about 70 degrees).
Rounds are usually 3 minutes each with a minute break. If he’s never boxed before he’ll probably be exhausted after 1 round but 3 rounds is usually a good start :)
brandon bkk thanks for commenting it is much easier for beginners to hold the focus mitts in this fashion as they will know that the straight punches are always caught with the rear hand... it takes the guess work out if it... also for the fighter throwing the punches .. they get used to throwing their punches past the lead hand of their opponent , which is what they will do in a real sparring session or fight :)
that's how the old school catchers used to do it. this keeps the jab and the cross angled at the same location. It can get tricky if the striker isn't used to this style, but if he is, and the catcher is skilled, it is more realistic than catching the jab with the left.
Why is the front mitt held as if expecting a hook when you only want to catch a straight punch with rear mitt? "I lower the mitts down when i don't want him to strike", so why hold up both mitts when you only want a strike to your right mitt, expecting him to be psychic? I see that same thing is done for hooks. I guess when catching any punch you want both hands up (in case puncher misses?). Seeing that you prefer visual queue over audio, I don't see how puncher is supposed to know which pad to hit when you are presenting both (which is point of the "Your partner is not psychic" section").
I wouldn’t get too complicated with combos because you’re the taller man. Look at klitchko... all he really throws is the jab to keep his opponent away and then a big right hand. Keep it simple and do the same and you’ll do well. Throw that jab and keep your distance. If he’s not used to fighting he will get tired very very fast. Once he’s getting tired ... you’ll see the his punches have nothing behind them... then start dropping the right hand on him to hurt him.
That's a good question and I'll find out, i just submerged them in soapy water, wiped them down and let them air dry... but there might be a better way.
I would never submerge mitts or gloves in water! I wipe out the inside of the gloves with Wet Wipes/Baby Wipes or other disposable wipes meant for cleaning skin. (Don't use wipes meant for cleaning kitchen surfaces.) In a pinch, you can dip a washcloth in water and dishwashing soap, but wring it out thoroughly-- you want it moist, not wet. Same procedure for Muay Thai/Kenpo/MMA shin guards. You can also put one dryer sheet in each of the gloves to combat odor. Or... if you have some prize money left over from your big fight, you could get this... www.amazon.com/Meister-Glove-Deodorizers-Boxing-Sports/dp/B0140JKLAA/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1536169623&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=boxing+glove+deodorizer&psc=1
Never Ever submerge a mitt or boxing glove in soapy water! it will never be the same afterwards and will degrade the padding inside to the point of it being no good anymore.. to clean a glove or a mitt, use a simple sanitary disinfectant wipe, like those that come in cylinders.. wipe down the inside of the mitt, go thru the finger slots and palm area.. do same with boxing gloves and this will preserve them for a long time by killing the bacteria and sweat that makes them smell bad and the sweat will make leather hard and brittle if not wiped down becuz of the salt content.
Thanks for commenting; So far we have only this video on how to hold the mitts but I will definitely do a complete workout on the mitts in the very near future : )
It’s easier that way for a beginner to get used to really extending in with the jab. Below is a link to Emanuel steward doing the same thing with Klitschko .. he also did the same with Lenox Lewis and they had awesome jabs ... thanks for commenting 😎 ua-cam.com/video/x1Fd1JLEiaE/v-deo.html
Larry Wheels you’re absolutely right about the counter shots for an over extended jab... thanks for posting it for those who will read the comments 😎😎👌
1:27 the guy throwing punches has obviously been skipping his Leg Days!! Big upper body but legs like a Frog!! Course, I wouldn’t say THAT to his face!! (I’m not fucking stupid!) lol But what I really wanted to say is Thankyou. I found this video very helpful, in starting my 13yr old off with some Focus Pad training. Thanks for Posting! :-)
Thanks very clear and easy to understand!
You are welcome! Thanks so much for watching 🥊🥊🥊😎😎😎😎😎😎

Good point. I thank you for taking the time to watch 🙂🙂🙂
This is great for a quarantine workout

I've been training for a long time

This was Brilliantly done. Thanks a lot Sir.

5:08 speed it up and have a giggle.
Can confirm, giggles achieved.
How many rounds should I go and how many minutes each round its gonna be an outside fight
Rounds are usually 3 minutes each with a minute break. If he’s never boxed before he’ll probably be exhausted after 1 round but 3 rounds is usually a good start :)
Could you give me training tips
Why is the fighter throwing the jab and cross at the same pad? Never seen that done.
brandon bkk thanks for commenting

What?
I was thinking exactly the same thing!!

Personally i think this is best way to do it.. I have boxed for a few years and its really awkward when trainers hold it cause it makes you awkward

What about combos I got 1 more day for the fight

How do you clean this kind of mitt? I have 4 pair of evergel mantis mitt like those but i dont think im cleaning it properly
That's a good question and I'll find out, i just submerged them in soapy water, wiped them down and let them air dry... but there might be a better way.

He is a takwando and jiu jitsu black belt fighter
Where is the video on how to hit them?
thank you for your comment, we will post a video with a complete focus mitt routine in the next few weeks : )
What if he have his head down while hitting me
Throw the right uppercut then left hook 🙂🙂
looks like they do it the first time in life :p
Lol...it was the first time in his life that he hit the pads ... that was the purpose of the video. Thanks for commenting 🙂🙂

Both, the pad holder too.
He's throwing left jab to your right hand mitt?
It’s easier that way for a beginner to get used to really extending in with the jab.

Fight your way Fit just make sure your extended jab don't get countered by left uppercut or a right hand.
