    So the tech level being all over the place is actually baked into the lore. They’re basically in the midst of a supercharged industrial revolution, and new technologies and advancements are outpacing people’s ability to cope and adapt. This causes some amount of strife, to put it lightly.
    On NPCs: Most of them have a name and a small ongoing plot that develops as you progress. They are their own people, with their own lives that don’t require the main characters to interfere. A lot of them end up being neat little views into the details of the world and how people live their everyday lives in it, away from the higher stakes stuff that the main plot handles.
    Trails into Reverie basically acts as a big epilogue for all the 9 games that came before, which is why it looks like there are so many characters. Ha
    It might be interesting if you watched all of the game openings in one sitting, to give a broad view of what the series can be like. Though note that the first 5 games (Trails in the Sky 1-3, Zero and Azure) have 2 versions. They had updated ports on the PS Vita that were called the “Evolution” versions, which had separate opening movies. The Evo OPs are quite spoiler ridden however, compared to the originals.

    Trails into Reverie is the 10th of a overarching story and is sort of a epilogue to both the Cold Steel games and the 2 Crossbell games that takes place between the Sky and Cold Steel games, so not the best place to start lol; like you said you can jump in the beginning of any arc just fine, granted Cold Steel 3 and 4 kinda start to depend heavily on the previously games, personally I think playing by order of release is the better option

      @@SchwahnGaming personally I dont think the Skies games aged that much, the PC ports have some QoL like turbo that can make the experience more enjoyable, if you want you can even mod the PsVita japanese voice into the PC version, some even mod the animated portrait from Vita, but personally I dont like the artstyle and I'm pretty sure most fan would prefer the original as well

      @@SchwahnGaming Every main character have a face portrait when talking, the original has more distint style, almost but not quite like a 90s anime, where the PsVita had animated face portraits but using a more modern anime style, in general people like the original more.
      And yeah they can be a time sink, but how big of a time sink depend on how you play these games, one thing that make the series stand out is the fact the almost every NPC you can talk have a name, sometimes with mini stories of them own, and every time the main story progress all their dialogue change, not to mention that usually you need to speak 2 times to see all they have to talk. Thats is totally optional, but is part of the series charm, specially because sometimes you can speak to the same NPCs multiple games later. To give a example of how long usually take, I played Cold Steel 1 two times, I did everything in both playthroughs minus talking to every NPCs the second time around, one I clocked about 110h and the other about 65h

      All can really add to this is that Trails into Reverie is probably the MOST linear as far as story freedom, but still gave ways for players to mess around & have fun,
      Also that the person with long hair & the thread, is a character u only see in special post game cutscene

    Well - To answer your questions about "modern technology" mixed with swordplay. The whole continent (called Zemuria) was basically in a medieval development just a 50 years ago. Then that 50 years ago a single person discovered a source of energy that gave them access to what we will call "modern technology". That source of energy could be used to drive machines, but also create a kind of force fields that can be "translated" in raw power (like fire, wind, light or simply brutal physical force). That last one can be seen as "magic", but is more a technology kind of magic.
    However - That fast "climb" from medieval chivalry to that "modern technology" went so fast (the technology was discovered 50 years ago, but it took years to become really usable), that old institutions and practices stayed in place. Things like sword techniques are still very high respected, so that has lead to this strange mixture of medieval and modern weaponry.
    This is all very well explained in the previous games, and if you are a real JRPG lover, I can only very strongly advise you to play the whole series. I know what you are thinking now: "this will take me hours and hours". Believe me - I was thinking that same thing, but I just said to myself; "What the hell - I will dive in and will see where I will come out". And the first hours into the very first game "Trails in The Sky" got me completely hooked (to my big surprise I might add). Sure everything starts very slowly, but then you realize that this slow pace let you learn about the world you are in, and set everything up for stuff that comes later. And when that comes if hits like a hammer.
    To make a long story short - Once I started the series I had no other choice than play every game in the series to the very end. That's what it does to you. You have been warned!!!

      Thanks for the worldbuilding lesson!
      So, question, do all of the games take place on the same planet and around the same relative time? Because I thought they were more disconnected than that.

    • @jclosed2516
      @jclosed2516 Рік тому +2

      @@SchwahnGaming They play on the same planet, and even on the same continent called Zemeria. The games play it three different country's that share borders. The first three games play in the far south (Liberl), the next two games play in a little city state north-east called Crossbell. This city state is in-between two big country's and the last four games play in one of those, that's called Erebonia. The latest game that's released today is the culmination of all the previous stories and combines the stories of Liberl, Erebonia and Crossbell together. The other big country is Calvard, and while Calvard plays a role in the previous games, the nex series of games play specifically in Calvard.
      There are maps available where you can see all the country's that are involved (just google and you will find). Of course there are more country's on the continent, but they are only involved story-wise, not physical.

    • @oOPrettywinxOo
      @oOPrettywinxOo Рік тому +2

      @SchwahnGaming They are very connected. Same planet, same continent, every arc just plays in a different country on that continent. Time wise they are also very close to each other, some even overlapping (while playing in different locations). I think Trails in the Sky plays in the in-game calendar year of 1202, and the last Cold Steel Game ends in 1206..or 7? Regardless only a few years have passed inbetween all the games.
      Think the Marvel Cinematic Universe type of connection level. You can probably get some enjoyment out of every movie, just like you can get some enjoyment out of every arc of these games (never start in thr middle of an arc tho). But they WILL reference events that happen in the other games that you would not get, & whenever the Avenger moments happen (basically characters from different Arcs coming together), you will get none of the excitement and implications.
      So that's why ppl say to play all of them to get full enjoyment.

      The Trails of Cold Steel 4 had Avengers Endgame vibe to it, but this game goes further. Loved the story , and it subtly sets up the next arc, which is in the Calvard Republic. As a matter of fact, the third game for that arc is about to be released in Japan in September. We should expect it by 2026, hopefully or sooner, if Falcom gets their act together. All in all way underrated series, in my opinion.

    about the tec level in the series, it is fully explained, it also builds gradually so if you start with trails into reverie not only the characters and the story will confuse you, but the world will confuse you too. because you're going to see "Gundams" (this anime that I've never seen until today, I met giant robots through Power Rangers and in these trails games, that must be why a lot of people make fun of them and I take them completely seriously I even cry because of them ) and people fighting with swords and often defeating them, even if reverie tries to explain it to you in detail, you'll probably ignore it or find it boring because you didn't follow the concepts of this world from the beginning. the Trails Games also have the best world building ever in a video game series, I played Tales of,persona,atelier,final fantasy, loved all of them but all of those worlds are nothing compared to the complexity and passion of the trails series, that's why it became my favorite games of all time

      The only complaint I have ever seen anyone have about the Legend of Heroes franchise is with NPC dialogue.

      @@SchwahnGaming don't worry that's a Lie, I forget to tell you but people say that because every Npc in this series has a name,a life story, sometimes they even foreshadow the world and the plot, but its mostly for world building and some fun dialogues, the main point here is they never locked the story or force you to talk to them or all of them, you can play the whole game without talking to a single one if you want, I played Reverie with a fan translation in 2022 without even touching them,some major Npcs do have some cutscenes in the main plot,but they are less of npcs and more like secondary characters,some of them grow,they get jobs basically they are alive,they move on in Life, even so these games do not force you to Talk to them.

      @@SchwahnGaming what these games sometimes do is make you talk to groups of people during a certain story session, these are not npc groups but groups of main characters, not every game in the series does this and it doesn't happen very often, it usually happens when you meet all the important characters in the game, after a big climax, moments of peace or moments of investigation

    another thing you never ignore a detail in this series, you can ignore in final fantasy,persona or whatever but here no...every single word they say matters even if they gonna take 5 or 10 to explain that. let me give you a quick concept of the world building of this series without Spoilers, there's this Black character since the first trails games, and we rarely see any other black character in the series since then, but there's a reason for that. they never reveal where this character was born, what city or country did she came from? they did just say she came from the south Zemuria (zemuria is the continent of the trails series....the only continent that exists in their planet.....Yep...best world mystery Ever) a place never explored before and they just mentioned this area 1 single time in the whole series, 15 years later or 10 games later the new game after Reverie is finally out in japan, in a new part of the continent the East side, there's a lot more black characters in this game and they finally reveal where did that black character from the first game (that still appears in the story until today of course) came from, that's just a little taste of whey the trails series is indeed the best nowadays, so if you wanna understand this world first....forget the real world concepts they have their own world, their own concepts and science that is based on the real one to some extent

    So since you mentioned the English dub. The first two story arcs sky and crossbell are not voiced in English. Sky had battle lines voiced( in English and Japanese) and head a jp voice mod which is based on the vita rereleas of those games. Crossbell released only recently 11 years after is original jp release and didn't get dubbed. Cold steel and reverie are a different story however. They did get dubbed and for cold steel 1,2 and reverie the English dub actually has more voiced dialog than in Japanese. To give you a idea how much more. Cold steel 2 jp: 9450 voice files, coldsteel 2 en: 14209 voice. files. Coldsteel 1 had around the sane amount in diference. Reverie will have not that much more voice acting but it's still 20k+- instead of 18k+-. The reason this diference exists is because in the original dub they sometimes only voice have of a scene or only one character in a scene. To rectify this the English publishers decided to dub more lines to make it feel more consistent wat is and isn't voiced. I am genuinely happy this is the case!

    This game is the conclusion to the Crossbell Arc and Erabonia Arc to tie the loose ends so to speak. If you don't know what Crossbell or Erebonia are then you are looking at the wrong game.
    My recommendation is to start from the beginning of the Trails series and then work your way to Reverie. It is not absolutely necessary or that i would insist or anything. If you do that, then it would be worth your time. If, for some reason, you don't like to read the dialogues between characters, you may be playing the wrong genre altogether.
