  • After several years of hard work, finally I can say that I'm a certified computer toucher. Now, finally, I have the time, circumstances and power to get back to calculator touching. I've missed it so!
    Thanks everyone for the encouragement, patience and interesting anecdotes during the past three years. They've been long.

    It's good to see you back, a lot happened in these years for pretty much anybody and it's nice to see your collection expanding.
    In my opinion the thing that this machine really could do with is a way to carry a result from one side to the other, but it really depends on what needed the people towards this calculator was marketed; it would be a useful piece of information if for say there was a specific proces which required such double machines

    • @1stSpyGuy
      @1stSpyGuy  2 роки тому +1

      That would've been cool, but this machine lacks a back-transfer ability. Though, one of my electric machines can move a result from the counter register back to the input, which is pretty wild. I hope to make a video about that one soon, but last time I ran it for any length of time it tripped my breaker.
      The excitement of old electronics! :D

  • @someonespadre

    The classic traverse calculation is bearing distance cos sin latitude departure…you could enter cosine in the left and sine in the right then wrap your distance up in both (multiplication), left answer is latitude and right machine is departure. So now I “need” one of these. Monroe’s recommended procedure was distance on keyboard, wrap up cosine, write down latitude, clear registers but not keyboard, wrap up sine, write down departure.

    • @1stSpyGuy
      @1stSpyGuy  2 роки тому +4

      Nice explanation! :) I tried to make a video explaining the topic in greater detail, but it just became wordy and not clear enough for me to present it.

    • @someonespadre
      @someonespadre 2 роки тому

      @@1stSpyGuy thanks for the build up division method. It appears to allow for more precision in calculating reciprocals (1/x). I did 1/190 which amounts to adding 19 5 times then 2 times etc leaving me with 1 zero and 7 significant figures in the upper register. The answer being 0.0052+
      I have an arc of 190 radius, the old books had a table for circumferences of the unit circle. My arc length is 19.01 so I multiplied that by 1/190 then look up the included angle on the table. Interesting methods the old timers had.
      Naturally one could look up the log of 190, subtract that from 10 then look up the answer, add two zeros on the front.

    Intressant maskin. När du dividerar med manuella räknemaskiner, måste du snurra tills det plingar och sedan backa ett varv? Det känns ju som att man utan större problem kan se när man har gått så långt man kan. Eller triggar det extra varvet och plinget något som inte kan uppnås genom att bara sluta veva varvet innan plinget?

    • @1stSpyGuy
      @1stSpyGuy  2 роки тому

      Bra fråga!
      Nej, plinget är egentligen onödigt, så man kan gå vidare utan några problem om man har koll (men det har jag sällan).
      Riktiga proffs kan dessutom förutspå om nästa nummer har fler minus- eller plusvarv och lösa problemet ännu snabbare genom att välja om de ska ta ett pling, skifta och veva åt andra hållet.
      Jag borde göra en video om den tekniken... 🤔

      It happens on occasion, but the game used to be a lot more readable without all the cosmetics and various weapons.
      It used to be that it was easy to find out how a specific class would behave, but nowadays it's such a huge spread of different behaviours (pyro somehow whips out a jetpack, etc).
      The addition of matchmaking kind of detracted from the fun of random servers, but even those had a huge spread. One huge cancer on the game was Saigns (a possibly commercial community operator) who were running a stupid amount of servers where donors could get "premium" (permanent crits, speed hacks and health recovery). The thing that finally killed it for me was the bots though.
      Now I've played a bit once the bots are mostly gone, but the magic isn't quite there for me any more.
