Touhou Kaikidan ~ Mystic Square (東方怪綺談 ~ Mystic Square) is the fifth official installment of the Touhou Project series and is a 2D vertically-scrolling danmaku shooting game (shoot em up). It is the last game in the Touhou Project series for the Japanese PC-98. It is also the last game to have ever been officially released for the PC-98, released on December 30th, 1998. In this game, the playable character (Reimu, Marisa, Mima or Yuuka) travels to Makai after a horde of demons came out of a cave in order to confront Shinki about that problem in particular.
KirbyComment (tasvideos.org/...) makes their way through the game on Lunatic difficulty as Mima, notably not dropping any point item as well as grazing and milking a lot of patterns and attains a score of 284,581,040 points. Please read the author's comments (tasvideos.org/...) for more details. For reference, the best known real time score is 202,717,620 points by Miller.
This is the first ever publication of a game made for the PC-98 series of computers, which were only released in Japan.

Note that the graze counter resets to 0 at the start of every stage, and has to be built up to the 999 cap again each time.
It was quite a journey to get this TAS made. The PC-98 era of Touhou games is quite underappreciated in my opinion, compared to the Windows-era games. The same goes to the scoring systems they have, despite being limited by their hardware. There is however still alot to these games if you delve into them. Hope this was entertaining!
gg!
Awesome
Congrats, you got a new sub by the way
I don't know what's so deep about it, just get away from the bullets bro.
Just kidding.
Ah yes. The game that calls you "Human Failure" when you get a game over.
"Those Japanese games where if you lose it tells you how many fingers you have to sever to preserve your honor," _Gordan Freeman
Glad to see this on TASVideos.
If you like PC-98 Touhou, you'll also like the regular runs KirbyComment's channel has to offer. He does mainly score runs of the PC-98 games, mainly Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream, and they're a blast to watch.
Some of the grazing movement is really crazy.
Never expect to see Touhou PC-98 TAS on this channel. What a wonderful day.
OMG Your Picture!!😂
18:40 Never seen Mai's laser get stuck like that before
Ever since being involved in early scoring experimentation in this game myself 10 years ago, I've been hoping to see what a TAS can achieve on Lunatic. Nice to see it finally happened, and just as impressive as I expected... and even as a TASVideos publication! Very informative submission comments as well.
Gasp! Mystic Square! ;0
This was a genuine surprise. People often don't seem to care about the oldest of these games. Thanks.
Woah, pc-98, nice!
TAS's are always a treat to watch, with their goofy and sporadic movements.
There is a test called the "two-points sensitivity discrimination treshold" which consist of touching a blindfolded person with two chopsticks at once on different parts of their body to prove that the human body's tactile sense cannot detect more than one point of pressure at a time if the eyes don't see it to convey the information.
These type of games are like 10,000 moving chopsticks at once for my sense of sight. As soon as there are more than 10 bullets displayed on screen, I can't see my character anymore. Between the background and my projectiles going forward, the enemies and their bullets going downward and my character moving all over the place + the spread shots coming from everywhere... I just don't understand. It's like jugling with 100 grains of rice while sprinting backwards under pouring rain.
*while also dodging the rain itself
You must learn to see only your character. Let the world move around you and move yourself only as needed. As you focus on your character your peripheral vision will compensate and the rest should fall into place. This doesn't work for everyone, though.
You'd get used to it after a couple days/weeks. It's like with rhythm games - at the beginning sightreading seems impossible, but after practice it becomes natural.
These games are mostly scripted, just learn the script and you will be fine
Yeah, you basically have to learn to induce tunnel vision when playing these games-most of the bullets on the screen are just pretty noise, and you usually only need to care about the ones near your character, with the exceptions being pretty well-telegraphed on average.
All I see is spheres of love and passion.
Alternate Title: Mima becomes a god.
I mean she *did* say she was a God
dang i like the music
Nice TAS.
You got such an insane score the game turned it into a string
See, touhou is made up of projectiles. Projectiles that have hitboxes.
It is well-documented by this point that hitboxes are suggestions to TAS.
I can't say I'm overly surprised that lasers can just be bounced through for additional grazing.
actually lasers don't give graze in PC-98, so he was just messing around with their hitboxes
@@raymariopokenic1561 Huh. That's some useful advice I will no doubt forget before I finally get off my butt and try the old school touhou games.
wtf, why is the bot going through Sara's lasers? is it that Mima is fast enough to actually not touch them frame by frame?
The laser hitboxes actually come in small chunks essentially. This can be done on the Yuki & Mai fight too, there's like 4-5 pixels of leeway
@@Iris_Descent oh so their hitboxes are primitive rectangles with some gaps in between
pretty much?
Something like that.
Yeah the lasers have these sort of repeating diamond-shaped hitboxes, but there's gaps between them. They're very thin though and you wouldn't ever try going through them in a real run. Oddities like these and more can be found in the author comments.
The NES Demake version removes the graze limit.
good tas
18:17 looks so satisfying
more doom and touhou tases pls
Touhou back in the day, when everything was grass.
Nice One!!
Yooo touhou!
今宵も完璧ダゼ😊

These bosses are no joke holy f---
The craziest thing is, you could've told me this was a human player and I would've believed it.
2:38 bruh not really
Plot twist: it's a mildly experienced 2hu player, but not enough experienced to avoid the rain
And that's how you can tell the OP has never played these before
@@thesubinion Oh I disagree. I think OP has played these before and seen the absolute madlads that do stunts like "Impossible Spellcard with no items challenge."
nice i subbed

OKAYYY
does pc98 emulators has tas tools?
This TAS tool it’s so awesome that I was blown up that you grazed the SH*T out to the bosses… however there was one disappointment in me… you fought Mai instead of Yuki… I’m fairly disappointed… the rest it’s fine
The reason Mai was fought is that she has those enemy things that give score if you defeat them. If it wasn't for that, Yuki would be the pick due to having higher bullet density, and thus, better score on bullet clear. (Graze didn't matter as it was maxed out beforehand)
This one is more like Psyvariar buzz grinding.
I guess Lazers are just a silly myth?
ah yes, Mystic Square, the only one I tried playing
never even beat Sara lmao
Pls play them as a human run
where hitbox
Explain. How the actual F-[fumo] did you exploit on this game & device you literally are going non stop in out within a lazer... 4:05
At least I will let it pass because of this absurdness 16:47
Haha funny projectiles doing nothing
Not sure if you have or haven't played a Touhou or similar flavor of bullet hell game before, but in case you haven't or anyone reading hasn't, there's a very specific point on the character which is vulnerable. Said point is visible under certain conditions (some refer to it as "Focus"). There's a lot more to it than just the info I just provided, but if anyone's interested, it can be easily found online.
(Edit: Better sentence structure)
@@DooyevenTriforce holy shift dude, good job wasting your time for me, I appreciate it
@@notabaka894 It's...very much not uncommon to see someone in the comments of these videos say what you said but not meme'ing around. That's why I explained it.
Why not try and play this game on highest difficulty. After that, let us hear your thoughts about “funny projectiles” which you arbitrarily restated.
So much seething in the comments lol
So it's like... strike gunner with waifus?
Bullet hell gonna bullet

何が面白いの?これ
シリーズの中でもシステムが整ってない時代のゲームだし1人で制作してるし……仕方ないよ
多分風神録っていう作品以降なら面白く感じるんじゃないかな
Looks like average Touhou gameplay to me n_~
Nice TAS.
