    As you showed us, it's much easier to first locate satellite at 101° and then tune it in best as possible. Then, the other satellites at 103° and 99° will already be properly tuned in. Thanks for your generosity! Also, that is a beautiful large house you are at. The previous owners had spent decades on making your yard look so thick and beautiful with all of those nice trees.

    I had forgotten where some of the menu items were. They change slightly sometimes. My parent's area lost their only DTV service person (rural UT) and my senior citizen parents take care of my 100+ yr old grandma. They only care about CNN, MSNBC, ESPN and, all the local stations. Now I need to figure out which transponders their channels are on and go take a look to see which model dish they have

    Wish I understood how to do this but I'm lost! Jim Litz, thank you for sharing and hopefully preventing others from having to deal with DTV "No Customer service hell" as we are dealing with. We've had 3 service calls in 9 days in which nothing was fixed, our service is getting worse every day.
    We are in our 60's, there is no way we can get on the roof to the dish. I see the comment from Vigil774L, a DTV tech replied on here last year, and am hoping someone may have a kind suggestion as we are getting no help from DTV. They set up a 4th call yet I will bet anyone something I do not have they will not show. Many thanks for your time and/or suggestions.

    4:10 the option I like using work if you have two iOS devices on the same account. Simply take iPhone and put on tripod pointed at your TV in the house then call your iPad for example though FaceTime video call! When on the same AppleID account you can call your other devices! Also if your dish isn’t far from your receiver and you have the Rf remote you can operate the menus while you tune your dish! Using my iPad with face time makes this super easy and didn’t need any fancy SWR meeter or expensive dish setup units!

      Thanks. This tip is spot on (excuse the pun) for fine tuning the slimline. I think the challenge for most fine tuning alignment issues caused by painters, roofers, etc that accidentally hit the dish are determining which satellites to tune (so many appear with signals) for a particular area. There is little information for the layman about which specific satellites should be in the tuning process for any given area..

    I really need some help with my DiecTV Dish. I have the older SD Dish and not the HiDefinition. I want to install it on a taller pole, because for three years, I’ve been getting letters some DIRECTV claiming that the satellite dish I am using is going to be obsolete because they have a 17-year-old satellite that’s going out. They want to install it on my roof through my shingles and all and I don’t want to do that. One of the problems I’m having is with trees and possible location of where to install a pole. The only reason why I had DIRECTV primarily was for the NFL SundayTicket, however, as some may know if not all, DIRECTV has lost it contract with the NFL to sell the programming. Can anyone give me any advice on how they would install the newer wider style type of DIRECTV satellite dish, or would you just simply go with a company like spectrum or AT&T on a wired line? Thank you very much for any advice or input

    • @litzdog911
      @litzdog911  8 місяців тому

      The Slimline HD dish doesn't require much more sky view than your old SD-only dish. The required satellites are very close together in the sky. If you don't want the dish installed on your roof they should be able to find a suitable location for a mount your siding or a pole in the ground. The nice thing is that the HD swap won't cost you anything, unless you upgrade other services. You'll get more answers if you post in the DirecTV support forum.

    • @litzdog911
      @litzdog911  Рік тому +1

      It doesn't matter. Just loosen the azimuth bolts and gently rock the dish from side to side until you can peak the 101, 99 and 103º readings. Leave the elevation bolts alone if you think you've peaked the elevation. It can take a bit of back & forth to peak all readings. Good luck.

    Will trees block out 100% of the signal? I'm attempting this process after roofers took my dish down. I'm setting it up about 5 feet off the ground opposed to on the roof, and I have some tree tops in line of sight, nothing super dense though. Reading all 0s on the receiver no matter what I do. Mast is perfectly level, elevation and tilt are unchanged from how it was working before. Tried slowly sweeping left to right to find my azimuth and can't find anything. I expected if trees were in the way I'd at least get a weak signal? Is there an easy way to check the lnb with a multimeter?

    • @litzdog911
      @litzdog911  3 роки тому +1

      Trees will certainly block 100% of the satellite signals. Those signals are VERY weak. Do you have an app on your phone to let you "see" where the satellites in the sky? That should help you determine if the trees are blocking the signals from 99, 101 and 103ºW. You may also need to tweak those azimuth & elevation settings because you don't know how accurately the mast was plumbed on the roof. 101ºW should be the easiest to home in on a signal. It's unlikely that your LNB died. Sometimes you just have to keep sweeping, very slowly. Good luck!

    set your scew and then just do the alignment with 99 location only. 99 is a spot beam and is the most sensitive signal to align. A reading of 86 will be more than enough. all the other satellites will fall into place. I did many installs with this method in half the dish alignment time. Had very little sig loss during rain storms...

    • @litzdog911
      @litzdog911  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks. I like to start with 101ºW to ensure that I'm aimed in the right direction. The signal from 101ºW is stronger (lower frequency) and easier to lock on to. Then I "dither" the dish adjustments to maximize 99 & 103ºW. Sometimes folks waste a lot of time because they accidentally aimed at 110 or 119ºW instead of 101ºW.

      @46fd04 Рік тому

      @@litzdog911This is how I do Dithering. I use a basic digital satellite meter that gives me a digital numerical reading. I set the dish on 101W. By hand, I turn the dish (azimuth) til I get the highest reading. I lock down the 3 nuts that clamp the dish to the pole. Then I raise/lower (elevation) the dish til I get the highest reading. I lock down the two nuts to secure elevation. I check the meter for a reading. Let's say it says 82.6 Using the Dithering screw for Azimuth, set the black dial to ZERO. Using a 1l2" nut driver, turn the Dithering screw 2 full turns COUNTER-CLOCKWISE and check the meter. It will be lower, let's say 78.7 write it down! Now, turn the screw CLOCKWISE until the meter gets back to 82.6. That will be TWO full revolutions. Keep turning the screw CLOCKWISE until you once again obtain the low reading of 78.7. Count how many revolutions it took to get there. Let's say it took 5.5 revolutions to get to 78.7. That is a TOTAL of 7.5 revolutions from the original 78.7 reading (2 plus 5.5). Divide that in half, which is 3.75. Turn the Dithering bolt COUNTER-CLOCKWISE 3.75 revolutions. You have now properly aimed the Slimline dish Azimuth. Using the Elevation Dithering Screw, repeat the same procedure.

    Is there any way to tell if the LNB is defective other than swapping it out for another? I purchased a slimline dish kit recently on ebay. The LNB is an SWM with the Numbers of SL3S4NR5-01. To be honest I moderately expected to fail at the dither portion but I cannot even read the 101 satelight. The pole is level, the initial height and tilt settings are in and nothing but zeros on signal meter. My standard def dish took me all of 10 seconds to tune in the 101 after a roofer took it down. What your Receiver model number? The Single Wire Multiswitch (SWM) dish/LNB won't work with standard definition Receivers. And if your Receiver is SWM-compatible, it likely requires a separate SWM LNB Power Supply. And you do not need to remove any sort of "cover" from the LNB assembly.

    You realized you can’t connect the DIRECTV receiver to a surge protector or power strip

      Huh? Of course you can power a DirecTV Receiver from a surge-protected power strip.

      @@litzdog911 I watched a video, and it said do not connect it to a surge protector, or power strip. Even some articles say not to use your DIRECTV receiver in a surge protector or power strip. They can interfere with the signal.

      @@carloso5910official The surge protector issue only applies to the coax cable connection that some surge protectors provide to protect Cable TV cables. You should not use those coax connections with a satellite receiver. However, it's perfectly fine to use a surge-protected AC power outlet with satellite receivers. In fact, it's recommended. Mine are actually protected with an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) so that they continue operating during a power failure.
