I understand that most techniques will be covered in the course, but do you mind quickly sharing if edging while performing a sculling stroke increases effectiveness.
I’ve heard arguments made for both yes and no and I’m curious.
    Thanks

Great question! The effectiveness of edging while performing a sculling draw actually depends on the shape of your kayak. For many sea kayaks, especially those with a pronounced keel, edging toward the paddle can be more effective. This allows the water to spill more easily under the bow and stern, giving you smoother movement and better control. So in this case, yes, edging does help - but it’s all about understanding how your specific kayak responds!

For the draws, i think you are using old-school techniques. In both draws, i believe your paddle shaft should be more vertical, your blade should be deeper in the water, and your top elbow should be lower than your shoulder. In your classic draw, your top hand should be pushing out as your low hand pulls in, and you shouldn't be lifting your blade out of the water. In your sculling draw, you should be using torso rotation for extra power.

Hi Thanks for the comment. We have a full 20 lesson course on moving sideways. We do go into detail about all of the points you have raised looking at the pros and cons of different variations to the strokes. We have lessons on shaft angle, what each hand does during the strokes, how upper body is important and the path of the blade.
