Your honesty and transparency is the main reason why i'm following this channel and i hope it will never change. Great duo putting out amazing content, video quality is incredible too.
Its hard because a vehicle like this is a perfect example of something Id say is at the 90th percentile for the class. Bringing up the negatives is coming from a good an honest place to viewers and Acura. But its always gonna make someone upset.
@@savagegeese Your guys's plain honesty and clarity sure helps. I went with a TLX A-spec after rewatching your TLX videos several times, and I found the same caveats as you did - no surprises, no "why didn't anyone warn me about so-and-so", even after 3k miles.
@@TheLaw_11 ha. Bmw is just another mass market manufacturer. There's no prestige compared to Porsche or the Italian brands. I have a 2023 X5 so I'm not hating on BMW btw
I own an X7. It is more about luxury than the MDX which I looked at also. You save money on the MDX. It is sportier...more like a X5. But the X7 has way more luxury, more room, and the interior quality is a few grades above the Acura. I prefer the BMW inline 6 and transmission also. Both vehicles are good choices.

Mercedes, Audi, and BMW used to have an issue just like this when accelerating hard out of a turn with cars that had limited slip differentials. The issue was caused by the awd system and the ECU putting the drivetrain into "limp" mode for protection. The ECU would detect wheel spin and axle rotation ratios that were not compatible with each other and would put the car into limp mode until the car was stopped and allowed proper time for the drivetrain ratios to readjust(or when shifted out of drive). Putting it into neutral automatically readjusts the ratio. It's the same stress release you feel when your cars comes out of drive and goes into neutral or park. It's common on cars with torque vectoring. This issue is pretty much trying to prevent the damage that can occur to a drivetrain similar to taking your 4wd truck with locked diffs and driving in tight circles around a parking lot. You will blow your transfer case or diffs.
I'm pretty sure this is what happened to me at a BMW M Performance Driving School when I was in an M2 on an autocross course. I was going great and then...NO power...sad trombone music.
Good explanation. It seems a bit ridiculous to me to have mechanical problems and computerized solutions this complex in what is essentially a three row land-boat of a crossover. I guess it's a luxury/premium crossover, but it still seems to be getting ahead of itself. It'd be like a coffee machine stalling mid-pour because it needs to re-triangulate itself to the relative positions of Jupiter and Saturn.
@@0hypnotoad0 It's not a mechanical problem. It's a simple limitation of cars that drive all 4 wheels while suppling torque to them while they are all spinning at different rates. The higher the rotational speed, the less you can get away with this off-balance rotation between multiple wheels. It's what happens when you have an AWD system that can vector torque to one wheel at high speed while also limiting slip. This problem has existed for decades, we're just only used to seeing it in mechanical 4x4 systems like trucks and traditional SUVs, or high performance cars with torque vectoring AWD systems. Ever owned a truck? They have the same issue, only they don't have a smart enough drivetrain that can slip the drivetrain into neutral when it sense extreme ranges...they just crack open your transfer case or diffs instead.
Good point about binding. They do the same maneuver in almost every video (punch it from 0mph in a 90° turn) but other AWD systems do not seem to do this. MDX Defect?/intended preservation mode?/other brands will bind and eventually self destruct? Perhaps an issue with the rear end clutch pack stages not being able to gradually release, so the ecu just throws the trans into neutral for rear end preservation? It will be interesting to find out...
it is good to see a review that discusses actual problems and issues. That "neutral" gear thing could cause an accident. The coverage from vids like this will prompt acura to fix it asap. I've loved all the acuras I've owned, way back to a 1990 Integra! Glad to see the company keeping it up!
@@WesKidFresh its not in all versions of the 10at I can confirm. My Honda doesn't do it, although its FWD so full throttle while turning the wheel from a stop isn't advisable, but i don't detect anything but traction control intervention.
This car ROCKS. Coming from someone who traded in my $130k 2020 S-Class for this (just needed an SUV, and was tired of the MB electronic issues and over-engineering the simplest things)... I love this car more than my previous 3 MBs!! (2011 E350, 2014 S550 & 2020 S560).
@@fahadnadir2403 S Class is on another level.. whisper quiet and endless power. However, I find myself enjoying the Type S more just because you never know what’s going to break in the S Class. That thing is over-engineered… wayyyyy too many features and I didn’t use 95% of them.
Ive had my TLX Type S for over a year now and never experienced the transmission issue, and I’ve driven it hard, especially out of corners and from a stop. The only thing I hate is the automatic up shift in manual. Info system you get used to, but it’s not ideal. Fuel economy is garbage as well, otherwise I love the car and never see myself coming the other way.
Same here: I own TLX Type S and I drive it very aggressively. I put 6000 miles and no issues with transmission at all: very quick and predictable reaction 100% of the times. I bet something is wrong with electronics there. Fuel economy is outstanding: I average 14.6 MPG, which is super cool to show to my toyotaprius friends :)
i got 11k miles on my 2022 TLS type S, love it. I do wish it weighed less for better acceleration and fuel econnomy. and really wished it had HUD lol but otherwise i'm loving it! but i do have rear passenger window not working haha
MPG is the same as what they had in the video. I do floor it when from a complete stop to a corner and did not have the same reaction as they did. Will try it this weekend when the opportunity comes!
I have a new 2023 - and I have not encountered ANY transmission issues reported in this review. I use the wireless Apple Car Play 100% of the time. It links flawlessly without any cables and I appreciate the wireless charging. I have zero issues with the trackpad interface - I think it works perfectly well, and I never have to reach up to touch any screens and take my eyes off the road. As the reviewer stated, if you are using the Car Play - there is nothing wrong with this interface. The drivetrain is strong, the handling is amazing for an 3 row SUV, and the ergonomics are first rate. I agree with the reviewer - that it is truly a bargain compared the other 3 row luxury SUVs out there. Spectacular "Liquid Carbon" optional paint - far superior than the recent MB and INFINITIs we've had. Typical ACURA flawless fit and finish, and great styling. The ELS sound system is in a class by itself. I highly recommend the new MDX to anyone wanting a 1st class luxury SUV. You will not regret it. Last note - free maintenance for 2 years is a nice feature.
You’re mostly right. It’s an amazing car but I think it’s still underpowered. A 3.0t should put out more power. My wife’s Explorer does. My m40i does. The type s would be perfect with more power.
Thank you for pointing out the service issues. My experiences with Honda dealers are extremely similar - almost apple levels where they just tell you it's something you're doing wrong and the car is fine.
@@web apple has, and still does, have a reputation for not taking any ownership in bad design and/or flaws with their products. The gorilla grip is a great example, the horrendous butterfly keyboards are my favorite. I'm not talking physical damage or anything, it's the defects. Sure, getting another mac with a butterfly keyboard will temporarily get you back and working, but it didn't solve the issue. It's the unwillingness to accept that a product can have flaws and inability to admit them. I've dealt with Apple from an enterprise level as well as a few Honda products. They're the same. Until a bunch of people have the same problem and all make a big deal about it, they will refuse to admit fault.
Hey guys - I have a TLX Type S, purchased brand new with only 3,000 miles now. I started taking it in to the dealer with 2,000 miles on it for that transmission issue. My dealer 100% agreed that it was an issue and wanted to fix it, but Acura told them that it required “dangerous driving” to occur and for them to not diagnose further.
I’m not defending Acura but honestly beating on a car will eventually require something to be fixed. I agree the transmission should never have a problem like this.
We are getting close to a year with our MDX Type S Adv. We had an issue with the air strut but got it taken care of by honda. It is the best vehicle I have owned and love getting to drive my family in it. I haven’t experienced the transmission issue and I have driven it hard many times.
Honestly, that dealership experience is up to par with what I experienced with my old Honda Accord. It had a steering issue that put the wheel slightly out of alignment with the direction of the car, but whenever I told the dealership about it, their response was just “meh, we don’t see it,” or “meh, we test drove it and it’s fine.” Understandably, the dealership considers themselves the experts on the car-especially when they get a lot of consumers who don’t know anything at all. They aren’t used to car owners coming in wanting to be educated about their vehicle. They also aren’t used to having to spend more than the minimum amount of time on what they consider a “niche” issue. There’s no care like that anymore when they have tons of cars to go through in a day.
Those mechanics are bottom of the barrel idiots. You might get lucky depending on what state your in, depending on the franchise but, I would never pull my car in to a dealer full of glorified Jiffy lube technicians.
I had a similar experience with my 05 TL a few years ago. Car went into limp mode on a WOT pull onto the highway. had it towed to the dealership since it was a computer issue most likely and my local mechanic told me to. They rebooted the computer and couldn't repliate the issue, and charged me 200 bucks. 2 months later, same thing happens. I kew it wasn't a transmission issue because it was a manual and it still went into gear fine and the engine was running good as well. got myself a 15 dollar code reader on amazon, pulled the code and researched it on the good old forums. Ended up replacing the throttle position sensor myself and it solved the issue. It seems like issues that aren't immediately obvious to dealer techs get brushed off more often than not. It's unfortnate, but in those scenarios I've always relied on someone smarter than me figuring it out and posting to a forum. The internet can definitely be a great resource!
Exact same issue for me and my steering wheel. I’ve also got a vibration that comes and goes, but they tell me the car looks fine underneath. Have not had much luck resolving any of these small but annoying problems.
90% of dealers either: -Blame you for the problem, especially if you drive anything approaching sporty. "oh this is what happens when you drive "insert your sports car here" too fast" -Tell you it's "normal". "well it's 100 degrees and sunny, no car can keep up in this weather" -When the problem is too obvious and you tell them a car shouldn't break at 20,000 miles, then "every car will have some issues". Choose carefully who you support financially, because every time they get away with it reinforces the behavior.
Acura: “We made the Type-S for people who like to give it the beans!” Customer: “The transmission slips into neutral when I give it the beans😡” Acura: “Stop giving it the beans and you’ll avoid this ‘so called problem!’ Now go away!” 😂
As you pointed out, my old complaint with the MDX (and RDX) is the center stack design and infotainment control. I wish Acura would incorporate the cleaner and more functional design found in my Honda Accord. Other than that, I think Acura delivering a lot of value for the dollar.
This drives so much smaller and handles like a sedan. The interior in spacious and the third row fits my mother in law perfectly 😂. The remote start also turns on your AC, heated seats, steering wheel and mirror defroster if it’s cold outside. I would love the type s power train but I couldn’t justify paying $70k.
Totally agree...my wife was nervous at first about me getting her something this big because she text drove other comparable size SUVs and it always felt like the vehicle was turing around her. But when she drove THE 2023 MDX she was amazed at how small it felt. It was like driving a sedan. After experiencing that test drive, she had no problems with me getting her the MDX.
An expert Harvard-led research group found that people with high spatial IQs have no problem with the touchpad and get it easily. Conversely, those demonstrating lower IQs had a hard time with the touch pad and logic. The data makes sense to me 🤷♂
I had a 21 RDX A Spec and loved the touch pad. Once you're used to it I was able to do things faster while driving and it wasn't as distracting as touch screens.
@@bastinelli443 agreed. It does take a period of time to get used to. Although if I had my way, Acura would've kept the big wheel selector that they used in my 2009 TL.
I have known multiple people who had TL Type S cars back in the day, and every single one of them had very early transmission issues with their automatics. Everyone of them loved their cars, but everyone single one of them had to get rid of their car earlier than they would have liked due to transmissions issues. As a Honda loyalist this is very troubling.
Yet people love to talk trash about Hyundai/Kia. No car is perfect, some have more issues than others, but for some to say that Acura and Lexus are infallible is a lie!
@@philhenderson3516 That was in the 1999-2006 TL's 5 Speed transmissions, They haven't made that plagued transmission since 2006 and went to the 4 shaft design in 2007 and haven't had thousands of transmission failures since. Hyundia/Kia is no comparison to Honda or Toyota quality/value there's a reason they sell people on warranty and people fall for it, Any reliable car will get to 100k miles, If people are concerned with problems before that then they're buying the wrong car lol.
@@Partizan-one Not sure about the TL but the MDX's have been plagued with transmission issues, particularly the third generation made in Alabama. Some of those transmissions were even detaching from the carriage. Scary stuff.
Type-S owner here! The trans issue is a huge issue in the community, of our NJ Type-S community ~40% of the owners in the chat (45 Type-S’s total) are experiencing the same exact issue! I have experienced it since Dec 2021 when I got it and the only thing Acura has done is a new ecu flash for the fuel economy.
re: transmission, I haven't had that issue after 5000 miles on an MDX Type S. I suspect what you've experienced is pre-production transmission programming that's already been corrected.
Ever since the Type S launched ive been wanting to get one but the 3.0T is so new that I wanted to see how well it would do long term compared to the legendary J series motor. I did drive one for a week and it was an amazing experience. Although if im dropping $70k I want it to be a smart investment. Thank you for this and I look forward to the next update!
***TESTING FOR SHIFTING ISSUE: My wife and I have attempted to replicate the shifting issue of accelerating at full throttle after turning from a stop. Never has it skipped a beat and is very consistent and smooth every time. It was built in Dec 22
Dude. You are the ONLY test driver that wears out the bottom of the gas pedal. MDX w/SH-AWD are really fun to toss around. That is the main reason my wife does not want me to drive hers.
THAT transmission malfunction, right there, is a deal breaker. I'm not gonna purchase a product with a known default before they properly fix it. Otherwise like you two said, the car is great!
I've had one of these (the "base" type s) for about a year now and put about 10k miles. Haven't encountered the transmission issue but I likely don't drive it as hard as these guys. It has been comfortable, sporty enough and practical for hauling 2 kids around. Overall very happy with it. Complaints are below: * The infotainment is shit, still get annoyed by it every day. * The transmission I am not particularly fond of the way it shifts. Not even talking about that neutral issue mentioned in the video. It is just annoying somehow. * The lane keep assist seems to be get confused sometimes which is annoying. * Oh there is one issue with a steering judder on start up when it drops into the setting. It is apparently a known issue and they will be replacing the steering column when I take it in. * I wish the seats were more supportive on the sides. * The wipers seems to have a mind of their own. Lot of lag responding to changes and either too fast or too slow.
I had a similar problem with my 2017 Mdx. I complained constantly to the dealer until the transmission eventually failed. It had less than 50k miles on it. It was replaced under warranty. But, the stall is back in the new transmission. The dealer is saying they can't replicate it. Great car except for the unresolved problem with the transmission.
The transmission on that car is garbage (ZF 9-Speed), I remember when coming to a stop it would jutter like crazy and there were some instances when you would floor it and it would hesitate to down shift (used to have a 2017 MDX).
My family has been a Honda family since 1984 and my parents have been driving Acura exclusively since they got their first Acura Legend in 1995. My wife and I just recently went from Honda to Acura and the MDX was our first purchase. What an incredible machine. We went with the Venerable and reliable 3.5 L V6 and we have no regrets. This new body style is just fantastic.
That transmission issue would easily get me killed or kill someone else unlucky enough to be behind me when I merge onto a fast road. This is absolutely going to get someone hurt or killed. I have fast roads by me where we have to turn left and there are trucks coming from the right. Fast acceleration is imperative.
They also program semi trucks to do the same thing. Contrary to popular belief, you can get a semi truck up to speed decently quick: Not with standing you're loaded super heavy. The computer sees it as hard acceleration and will stall you out in a intersection for half a second, before it accelerates. That why I'm pretty sure this is not a factory flaw, and has been implemented by some stupid effete weenie from the American division. As long as Honda/Acura keeps up this relationship I would never buy something where the R&D was done here in America, if I wanted disappointments I would buy only domestic vehicles..which is what Honda/Acura is according to their relationship.
I had a sidewall puncture and the cheapest option to replace the OEM tires was ordering on tirerack and installed at discounttire, cost was right around $475 total in US.
$1600 to replace a cracked rim and the tire on my TLX type S at the dealership+ $329 to replace the other front tire so the both front would have the same treadware and not fuck up the SHAWD system. My tire and rim warranty covered $650 at least lol
The insanity today is remarkable. They pair that with the shocking contrast of such beautiful, big, expensive wheels with spraycan teenager style red brake calipers.
Here is a fun fact, the first ever production Magnetorhertoerilogical Struts ever used, were in the Ferarrrrri 599 and the .... 07 MDX. Glad to see they nailed the lead to Air ride too, probably rides like a Ferrrari lol!
I’m an Acura tech and we talk at work how much people don’t realize how great acura has become in some areas. The engineering as far as engine components are so simple compared to BMW or Audi
Your reasoning for the transmission logic issues is actually pretty accurate. Working for a medical transport company did fleet technician & we had lifted Dodge Caravans 2016+ and they would do the samething at half or more throttle is turning more than 10° despite being able to corner very well for the added height (highway ramps or curved entry ramps). Basically dropping into neutral and then once straight, accelerates like a soccer late for pickup. Probably programmed for it.
I have 8k miles on my ‘23 MDX Type S. And I second everything you’ve said. Love the car overall. That said, the slipping into neutral thing happens to me often, because I have to jump out onto a fast moving street leaving my residential street. The street I jump onto is also a steep slope, and I notice it only does it when going downhill. If I turn the other way. I can jam up the hill with none of the high rev neutral thing.
Here because i have a 22' highlander xse red/red last of the natural 6, local dealer has a used 22 mdx type s white/red. You help me make my decision. Great review!
I experienced the acceleration stall several times at high-speed cornering, and it's not only disappointing but actually dangerous. I think it's a built-in safety net by Acura in order to protect you from yourself. It's not a deal breaker for me, as I really enjoy my Type S otherwise. ☺️
Really good point about the dealer experience. I’m on my second Acura so obviously I like the products, but the service department is awful. This is a huge difference between Acura and true luxury brands. My buddy who has a BMW is treated like a king when he gets his car serviced. Acura doesn’t even try to make the experience “premium” or even good. For instance I purchased the service contract on my current vehicle and they ALWAYS try to charge me. Then I have to explain I have the service contract, they have to double check, etc. Totally unacceptable.
Definitely agree with the negative in mpg. I wonder why it is so low compare to the Germans, not just Acura, all Japanese V6s. It wasn’t a huge deal a few years ago, but gas price is in the rise, I wish Acura and do better on mpg
Not to mention the fact that Acura killed the hybrid version of the MDX, which is annoying. We have a 2020 hybrid MDX - gas mileage is much better than the regular version and it has more horsepower (325). Different transmission, of course - 7 speeds.
Wow, that 2-3 shift issue is horrible! The MDX S was on my short list, and I suspect I would not have noticed that issue on a test drive. However I do like to accelerate fast, and I have several "turn and GO" intersections on my daily semi-rural-and-into-the-city route. 😨
Somethings never seem to change. My 93' Acura Legend sedan 5spd manual was a great car, owned it for 14 years. But from day one new, the clutch would often shudder. Drove me nuts and dealer deemed it normal! A co-worker bought the same year Legend sedan with the automatic and he complained of weird, jerky shifting. I've known Honda Accord owners who had serious issues with their automatics.
Given how good a deal this is from a value perspective, and how expensive the Jeep 3 rows have become (G. Cherokee L, Wagoneer, G. Wagoneer), I wonder where the line is for which is better. Especially because Jeep dealerships are more willing to put money on the hood at this point, and you, me and everyone knows that Acura is going to be better to own from a long term perspective.
@@Tyrewhisperer I test drove a JGC 4xe after renting an X5 for a week and there really is no comparison. The BMW is much better built and felt more solid. The Jeep was also more expensive which was mind boggling. So I just bought the x5.
Regarding the transmission problem, that could be considered a safety issue. My guess is it is likely software related. When you do that specific action to make it repeatable, it just happens to be a scenario that wasn't programmed into the controller. I would take the service tech for a drive and show him yourself (since you know the exact sequence to replicated it every time). That way, they can feed that back to Acura.
What backyard garage trainee bestowed his youthful TLC (evidence sticker at 5:52) on the brake calipers to make the beauty of the wheels shine through extreme contrast? 2:45 This shows very well that piano black isn't just an aesthetic double-edged sword but that its reflectivity is also a practical visibility problem on those controls. 7:44 Trans mission confusion is a common problem these days. Trans logic issues are rampant, and they impair stability control greatly. - Definitely a car of our time. It's the new normal. 8:4 They call sport mode taking a lunch break during sporty driving normal?? That amounts to a middle finger to the customer. This is how to make a cusstomer.
I’ve had this MDXS about a year and just turned 18K and mine has never done this with the transmission. My mom has about 15K on hers. I’ll drive hers to test as well.
@@user-qc7dr3cd3q Geese is not driving it like a normal person. So possibly most people will never experience that. In any case that should never happen in a transmission

6:12 this is very similar to a common issue found on Kia stingers. Floor it from a dig, rev hits 4K rpm and no power for 3 to 5 seconds then gearbox upshifts, rpm drops then power is recovered. For the stingers it was the fuel pump. It’s sucks balls a performance suv can’t even go full throttle.
problem with this car is not the car itself, but the Acura dealership and lease program. This thing is $75k with advance tech package even with no markup, however even leasing this thing is $950-1100 which puts it into the X3M, X4M, X5 M50, Macan S/GTS depending on options, etc. range. Financing a $75k car is also ridiculous in itself with the absurd interest rate right now. also keep in mind; performance wise this is similar to a X5 xdrive40i which is similarly priced, but you can get one of those for $250 cheaper a month on a lease.
Upsale Rep. There is no such thing as a "service rep". They are ONLY there to sell you extra shit you don't need and make more $ for the stealership. If you want to be serviced you are in the wrong establishment. Great review!
I've said this before and I'll say it again. Service centers now (not all of course) don't bother getting technicians trained on mechanical skills and common sense troubleshooting. They hook up a scanner and if it doesn't spit out complete diagnosis for them, they say "no issues detected." Dude the issue is on video, what are you talking about? Had a similar thing with our used F150. Overheating, they try to tell me it's blown gasket that the tech sees visual external leaks, $5k quote. Meanwhile I throw in a $40 thermostat and back to normal temps. Come on, not everything can be read with a scanner. It's going to get much worse before it gets better, especially with hybrids and EVs becoming more prevalent.
As soon as they became available, I bought my wife a brand new 2022 MDX tech to replace her 2013 MDX tech which had been absolutely bulletproof since we bought it new 10 years ago. Other than the lack of a touch screen on the new one we have no complaints whatsoever. I am usually very hesitant to buy the first model year of a newly redesigned vehicle but decided to risk it (Acura carrying over the tried-and-true V6 definitely helped with the decision). So far, we have put 15k miles on it without a single issue which says a lot for new cars these days. My relative bought a new 2022 Grand Cherokee L at the same time as has had multiple electronic and drivetrain problems.
Wanted to provide an update here. My Type-S has an issue with the steering. Lots of clicking and creaking when turning the wheel - in for a cable reel replacement. Hopefully that fixes it. Brilliant car otherwise.
I got a base awd 23 because it was a really good deal for me. Honestly, I wish I could have afforded a type s, but it would have doubled my car payment which didn't seem logical to me. I really wish someone would do a head to head race with the base 3.5 and the type s just to see how far off it actually is.
Bought a 2022. Broke down on the day of delivery. Towed to dealer 3 times, spent weeks at the dealer and broke down each time as soon as we got it back. Dealer lied to us about what the problem was and that they could fix it; Acura told us it was a known issue that they couldn't fix and that we could return the car if we wanted. Returned the car for a loss that Acura said they would reimburse us for, but then didn't. Will never buy another Honda/Acura product.
I drove the MDX Type S this week. It was like driving a computer running Windows 11 on only 16MB of RAM. I didn't attempt to induce the limp mode problem in a turn that you experienced, but there's a 1.5-second delay when pushing the gas pedal from any stop, regardless of whether the wheel's turned or not, that's maddening. Further, the comfort wasn't mind-boggling, and the acceleration certainly wasn't worth the additional $10K for the added performance and a few sexy badges. It did have good brakes, I'll give you that.
Thank you for this video👍🏼! It’s nice to see that you not curry favor with manufacturer. By being honest in critics you help Acura to improve! Completely agree that there should be improvements for Type-S:transmission settings improvements to avoid this pause in neutral after acceleration, fuel economy improvement, infotainment system- touch screen adding, normal gear box selector instead of buttons, no piano black plastic as it makes car feel cheaper. And maybe turbo lag issue improvements
Just speculating, but I rebuilt a 3 speed ford ATX FLC once that did this, even more so on right turns, and it was an inherent design flaw of the fluid pickup on hard left and right turns causing the throttle body to momentarily run on low pressure and not build up enough fluid to engage a kickup. The solution wasn’t to actually modify the pickup but replace the engagement spring and ball in the throttle body with a stronger spring and a lighter ball. The ill-recommended solution throughout the 80’s for these FLC transmissions before Ford came up with a throttle body TSB was to overfill the transmission. While that fixes one problem it causes others, most notably eventually blowing out seals, so don’t do that. Eventually there was a modified filter that had a relocated pickup but on a hard enough turn it still slipped out of gear, so not a fix.
I had (and still have, technically) an issue with my 2017 hybrid MDX where it makes a high frequency whine when the battery is warm. It's very noticeable to me, and I could demonstrate it for the techs using audio equipment. They had it in a few times, and wrote it off as "this is normal", even though I was needing to wear headphones while driving it was so bad. I 100% feel the "dealership ignoring the problems" experience with Acura.
maybe it's not an option for you where you live or your issue happened under warranty, but you could also take your acura to a local honda/acura specialist; when i do that they sometimes find/fix an issue the dealership couldn't.
Jack is always pushing BMW, he likes the MDX better because he wants to be able to make it to the store and back without breaking down. BMWs are pretty cars but until they can make a car that won't be in the shop once a month it's a piece of garbage in my book, so many feel this way.
@@davidm4099 According to the recent JD Power VDS data (2019~2022), Honda and Acura is not doing well. Of course, people saying JD Power data is not reliable. I own a 2022 MDX platinum, bought the car within weeks of launch. The MDX replaced a 2012 Mercedes which had reliability issues that cost a fortune to fix. Great car so far, my biggest complaint is the chrome trim, it is garbage, the grille surround needs to be replaced and door trims take a lot of work to remove road grime stains. Other than that I'm very happy.
Funny, when i lived in chicago i used to go to the Westmont Mcgrath acura and they always couldn't replicate the issue either. Then i made a video and they believed it. I did have a great service advisor though, Edwin. So i think i may have been the exception.
Great review, as always! For those that have a need for a performance hatch/SUV for the space, but don’t need the third row. What else would you recommend on the market?
Been waiting for this video to drop! I haven't noticed the transmission issue in mine. But I don't think I've turned left or right at full throttle either. I'll have to see if I can replicate it. Other than that I've only had a small issue with the A/C slightly surging back and forth based on acceleration/deceleration. Overall I've been really happy over the first 3k miles. Love to drive it, practical as hell. Fuel economy is lining up with yours though. Averaging about 17.5-18.5.

Tbf that’s every dealer though. Any car I’ve had with issues regardless of brand they won’t do anything unless it’s something you can see or something very obvious
The Type S is nice and I looked at it. But for a little more you could get a BMW X3M Competition with 500 horsepower (600 tuned) and it will handle just about anything you can throw at it. I've had mine for a while and it's solid, with no tedious touchpad. The seats are a bit smaller than I like but overall great. Remember for 70k you're still getting the quality they put in their lower $40k cars, switches, and material. It's basically a Honda. If you want something that will last 20 years then buy the luxury Honda. But I don't buy for that reason. Buy the car you want to drive (and how you want to drive it) TODAY.
@6:50 That throttle hang/neutral whatever exist in the 2 liter versions of their RDX and TLX. Its super annoying too. Im not even driving hard either. Its always the intersections where you have the right away and its obviously clear, so you slow to turn and then get on the throttle... but it thinks about it...
My old 08 RDX with a 2.3T 4 cylinder i-Vtec actually had improved mpgs the colder it got and I felt a touch more power on the butt dyno. I did add Hondata reflash and a larger ETS top mounted intercooler to my RDX. Acura really should have made the 3.0T MDX Type-S a Sport Hybrid with the 7DCT and +420 hp/tq. They could have even used the old 14-20 N.A. 3.5L RLX Sport hybrid powertrain with 377hp/341tq. The mpgs would have been around 23-25 for city/combined/hwy. It was only $1500 more for the MDX Sport Hybrid powertrain compared to 3.5L+sh-awd for the 17-20 tech or Adv MDX.
Do you think the wheel 'spin' sensors don't jive with the 'Super Handling AWD' rear torque vectoring differential and instead of doing the right thing the transmission's programming logic just says ' I'm Out ' ...... ?
Dealers and many shop mechanics won’t ever be able to replicate the problems and figure out or suggest anything. It’s the same exp with many manufacturers in my experience

I had a new 2000 Acura CL-Type S and I absolutely loved it - however, it went through (6) automatic transmission replacements in 3 years.. There is no way I will ever consider purchasing an Acura product. Luckily when I bought it I also purchased an extended new car warranty.. They make very pretty and engaging cars but just hearing this gave me deja vu.. feel free to google Acura/Honda transmission class action law suite.. it’s bananas. My car would shift from 6th gear to 1st gear on the highway (75mph) back and forth again over and over twisting and bending half shafts, it was crazy.
Finally someone who knows what they are talking about! This should be the top comment!

It's dangerous to drive it with that problem. Does the car have manual shift mode or paddle shifters that could be used to overcome this problem?
Sounds like you need to bring up lemon law and they need to take back the vehicle. F that for 70k. Shouldn’t happen on any car.
Yup, that sounds like typical Acura
@@robertdevoy3119 Doesn’t help with it
I’m not defending Acura but honestly beating on a car will eventually require something to be fixed.
Have had similar experiences at the Acura dealer
With the HDR enabled, I could see the Acura engineers in the background testing the gearbox. Normally they'd be hidden in the shadows, thanks SG
90% of dealers either:
-Blame you for the problem, especially if you drive anything approaching sporty. "oh this is what happens when you drive "insert your sports car here" too fast"
-Tell you it's "normal". "well it's 100 degrees and sunny, no car can keep up in this weather"
-When the problem is too obvious and you tell them a car shouldn't break at 20,000 miles, then "every car will have some issues".
Choose carefully who you support financially, because every time they get away with it reinforces the behavior.
Acura: “We made the Type-S for people who like to give it the beans!”

Acura: “Stop giving it the beans and you’ll avoid this ‘so called problem!’ Now go away!” 😂

A part of me hopes this is just some sort of break in period transmission programming

A transmission error that is so easy to replicate and consistently wrong should be easy for an engineer to solve. All it requires is effort.
And money for the fix
Definitely agree with the negative in mpg. I wonder why it is so low compare to the Germans, not just Acura, all Japanese V6s. It wasn’t a huge deal a few years ago, but gas price is in the rise, I wish Acura and do better on mpg
Not to mention the fact that Acura killed the hybrid version of the MDX, which is annoying. We have a 2020 hybrid MDX - gas mileage is much better than the regular version and it has more horsepower (325). Different transmission, of course - 7 speeds.
Appreciate calling out that 2-3 neutral drop. Sad to see the Acura dealership give you typical Honda service.
Jeep is getting better, almost to a RR level
@@Tyrewhisperer I test drove a JGC 4xe after renting an X5 for a week and there really is no comparison. The BMW is much better built and felt more solid. The Jeep was also more expensive which was mind boggling. So I just bought the x5.
Yes same here, my rdx has funky software, I dont like the trans shifting, Acura needs to look into this
Transmission issue is a show stopper.
Any comment on the VCM?
Regarding the transmission problem, that could be considered a safety issue. My guess is it is likely software related. When you do that specific action to make it repeatable, it just happens to be a scenario that wasn't programmed into the controller. I would take the service tech for a drive and show him yourself (since you know the exact sequence to replicated it every time). That way, they can feed that back to Acura.
I was thinking same, safety issue for sure in my book.
@@user-qc7dr3cd3q yes, I’ve tried that. Honestly first time I’ve heard of this from anyone.
@@youngbrevy I guess I'm also do not drive like a "normal person." LOL In over 40 years of driving and I've long ago lost count of how many vehicles, flooring it at a turn is multiple daily occurrence. Maybe your "normal" persons don't drive where it is necessary to turn from a stop into fast moving traffic.
@@Sylvan_dB don’t get me wrong I don’t drive like a normal person as well. Most of the time I’m hitting red line lol
It is really refreshing seeing people that are great at what they do. Keep it up guys. Great work.
i like this channel! buy a 2023 subaru wrx, their sales are down 40% compared to last year!
im glad you bring awareness to these defects because its tiring as a consumer to have no pull to get manufacturers to listen to us
problem with this car is not the car itself, but the Acura dealership and lease program.
They hook up a scanner and if it doesn't spit out complete diagnosis for them, they say "no issues detected."
Dude the issue is on video, what are you talking about?
Had a similar thing with our used F150. Overheating, they try to tell me it's blown gasket that the tech sees visual external leaks, $5k quote. Meanwhile I throw in a $40 thermostat and back to normal temps. Come on, not everything can be read with a scanner.
It's going to get much worse before it gets better, especially with hybrids and EVs becoming more prevalent.
Transmission on my 2020 Honda Passport does the same thing. It's not new or specific to the Acura MDX. Dealer gives me the same response as well.
My Mdx Hybrid, even in Sport + mode, will cut power during hard turns. I'm not sure if it's the transmission or the traction control
Savage Geese has me looking forward to Monday mornings, and these long term reviews are good.
I got to drive the 2023 MDX fwd Saturday and fell in love with the vehicle, didn’t feel at all like a minivan.
I've been always interested in the Acura products and this channel satisfying my curiosity A LOT. Thanks for the long term review.
They are no more reliable like Lexus
Lexus, Acura, Toyota and Honda are top for reliability
@@davidm4099 According to the recent JD Power VDS data (2019~2022), Honda and Acura is not doing well. Of course, people saying JD Power data is not reliable. But the data sounds kinda right since Land Rover is always on the end of the list. My first car was Honda Covic. And I bought a new 2022 Honda CR-V hybrid last year. So... I hope Honda is doing well.

Completely agree with their opinion, it's why I have one. Some of the best value for dollar out there
I own a 2022 MDX platinum, bought the car within weeks of launch.
20k views in 6 hours. Incredible. Keep it up Mark.
Honest, objective as usual. That transmission problem would do my head in though 🤯
Savage Geese really eating it up on Long term Honda products.
Is that gearbox issue only on type S or the rest of the packages too?
I tried it multiple times today and was unable to replicate the transmission hang. It seemed to shift perfectly.
Curious, did Acura fix the issue with the programming of the transmission in its type S version?
Great review! Savagegeese provides the most informative reviews..
I am choosing between mdx and cx90. Obviously i have to wait for cx90 reviews.
If cx90 drives as good as this and fuel efficiency is 25mpg, i'd go with cx90.
CX90 will compete directly with Telluride, Palisade and the Pilot. It might feel a bit more luxurious than the Pilot, similar to the Koreans. 3.3L goes for around $60k, not sure it has as good riding quality and AWD system as the Acura.
@@ariescaisip5498 Mazda CX90 compete against the Pilot and focuses on looks and premium materials for the money. Not gonna drive as good as a $75K-$85K car for its price. Besides, Mazda being Mazda you'll on interior space. Also, if you're worried about MPG in cars that go for $55K-$70K, you're looking in the wrong segment buddy.
@@disco.lemonade inline 6, rear wheel drive. Regardless of the price, my expectation is high.
Mdx is front wheel biased and v6.
Driving dynamics is more important to me. Fuel efficiency is a nice bonus.
@@ariescaisip5498 Yup.. I'm waiting for the CX-70 - Inline 6. Don't need 3 rows.
How's the 3rd row in the summer time without air vents?
and 275/40r21 tires are not cheap to replace.
Honda/Acura denies every problem always. Love their cars, but have had issues that where they have ignored similar problems to the point of me having to sell the vehicle.
Tbf that’s every dealer though. Any car I’ve had with issues regardless of brand they won’t do anything unless it’s something you can see or something very obvious
That’s why Acura is not a luxury brand… they are just Honda with lipstick
Mazda CX90 vs Acura MDX Type S please!
The segment is hot with Genesis GV80, Infiniti QX60, Audi Q7, BMW X7, Volvo XC90, Lexus RX350L

That throttle hang/neutral whatever exist in the 2 liter versions of their RDX and TLX.
I have the mdx type s advance and after watching your video I tried to replicate the transmission problem but I couldn't get it to replicate in my car no matter how hard I jammed the pedal after a turn... maybe the one you got is possibly a lemon? :|
Also, Acura will/would consider your method of driving a reckless contributor - and it’s what’s causing the issue .. (total B/S)
