Absolutely THRILLED to see this video, I was stationed at RAF Alconbury 1984-86 and visited RAF Upwood pretty often, the clinic and was friends of several in the medical fields, I also enjoyed watching the gliders on weekends
I posted three video on RAF Upwood. I also was working at Alconbury. I was moved out here after the TR1 came in and they move us up here with no transportation between bases. They did finally start a bus service.
wow, brings back fond memories for me. I was in the ATC ( Air Training Corps ) 511 squadron Ramsey in 1983. The ATC hut was the white nissen hut near the barracks where you were billeted. A fun fact .....during a night exercise we had on the base in 1983 or maybe 1984 all the cadets were issued with a 2nd world war vintage Lee Enfield .303 rifle ( they were deactivated just by the barrel being plugged. we practiced rifle drill with them using dummy rounds. they could of been reactivated very easy just by removing the little plug in barrel ) Anyway one of the lads, can't remember his name! lost his rifle somewhere on the base near to the runway he said. The C.O flipped his wig and we were all sent out to look for it. It was never found. I remember thinking he had maybe stashed it somewhere to collect it for himself at a later time, not that easy as it was still an active base then and maybe he would be spotted walking out of the main gates with a 303 rifle on his back! So it could still be out there!
Very good story, it's funny how sights, smells and sounds will bring back old memories. I was only in England for two years but I enjoyed meeting the people and seeing the sights. I do have a couple more videos of RAF Upwood enjoy! Cheers!
A very interesting souvenir, especially as the whole site is curently a ruin earmarked for development. As a boy between 1967 and 1971 I lived at Valiant Square on the otherside of the road.
I work in the hangar 2 i feel sadness and dread for some reason and melancholy thoughts passing the building. My own experience plus the memory of everyone who served and the bomber crew i am in that hangar 8 till 5 . Just like the building i xlean it xx
Hi Wesley Boyer My grandfather was the farmer on RAF upwood. Do you have any footage of tractors or machinery working up there. He was the man who provided the land for the gliders. His name was marshal Papworth. Would be great to hear back from you. William
Love this video, really interesting. Would you be happy for me to use a short segment in an intro to my new video I am currently producing? I visited the other evening and got some footage and would like to talk about the history a little.
Been there many times and never noticed the bunker near the decontamination block. Or the little shelter near the tennis courts. Unless they'd since been removed
Ive said before i been up there since 2002 had dens up there actually refurbished a room 😅. I always respected the area others dints sadly. Once they took the lead off the roofs that was the end
Fascinating. I went to RAF Upwood recently and it's incredible.

Sorry, this and a few other videos is all that I have of RAF Upwood.
When I was there it seemed like a very lonely place, but nice and quiet.
Wes
